One aspect of the answer could also be that generally women are raised and expected to exist for other people just as much as they exist for themselves. So a woman who is a wife and a mother is viewed as a wife and as a mother before she is viewed as an individual, whereas men are viewed as individuals first. So when a woman does something dangerous or provocative, people say "what would her dad think if he saw this? What would her kids say if they grew up and saw this?", but you rarely see the same done to men.
And, by extension, women internalize this and thus feel leas free to just make impulsive decisions and do whatever they want, whereas men dont feel the same restriction on what they can and cant do.
Another example demonstrating the phenomenon I talked about above is how very often women's obituaries talk lengthily about how the woman benefitted the people around her, instead of talking about her interests and individuality. Whereas men's obituaries are generally more even in how they are written.

My thought exactly. In childhood, girls are told to be careful more than boys. I think partially because of an assumption that boy's bodies are more injury resistant (not sure if this is true in children or even in adults).
I do also think that on this front there is something to the concept of male expendability. A young woman dying is seen as more shocking than a young man dying, maybe tracing back to when many young men died in war.

I think its also a display of power without knowing. Women are raised to be afraid of the world and caretakers of others by such a young age , the choice to "play" with your life feels far for many women but not for men , who are encouraged to do "risky" sports at a young age( skating , soccer etc), and get hurt as a part of the process of growing up . The power to choose to risk your life without a second though of others or yourself feels very centric and egoistical , many men are raised liked that . There is also a factor of seeking a way to " let out steam" without introspecting , very common in many men i emcountered.

    • @rainbomg
      @rainbomg Год назад +18

I agree fully with this, and commented something similar. The base jumpers get a rush many women may experience walking to their car alone at night. We don’t choose that tho. When you aren’t prey, you’re free to play. Cats are playful when they are kittens so they can learn to hunt. The safer a cat’s life has been, the less danger he faces- the more playful he is. Women are killed for sport. Men can look at a possible physical altercation and see options, women rarely have that. I also have heard that this encouragement to take risks and be flippant with life as young men is beneficial to the species bc they would sacrifice themselves for the greater good of the group. Which sorta goes along with women not seeing them as long term mates.
      (Edited for typo)

    • @candychip2557
      @candychip2557 Год назад +5

Yeah while I think evolution does play a pretty large role in this, I also think that many people are just raised like that. Thinking back to my childhood, before and during elementary school, a lot of the girls were daredevils as well. My mom used to jump across large concrete blocks for the fun of it, which was forbidden, until she badly injured herself. Even I injured myself jumping off a closet as a kid, because I wanted to show how tough I was. Not to mention all the dangerous bicycle rides with my girl friends.
Of course, some of this "jackassery" might be reduced because of puberty and hormones and stuff, but it also feels like any chance of outward risk-taking will be trained out of girls, meanwhile boys will be boys.
Physical strength also probably plays a role though, as I used to play fight with boys a lot as a kid and was almost feared despite my small stature, but as I grew older the physical power imbalance grew too large, plus it wasn't appropriate anymore, and I was often scolded for it.

    • @rainbomg
      @rainbomg Год назад

@@candychip2557 interesting how at a young age girls are often taught that it’s our job to manage boys through our own abstaining- boys aren’t scolded for wrestling with a girl due to the size difference or imbalance of upper body strength, or that they could hurt someone, no, girls are told not to be _inappropriate_ with boys. Like, boys are going to do whatever they want, and girls must be the gatekeepers of appropriate behavior. “Boys will be boys” as it were. Did you know that the legal drinking age used to be different for girls than it was for boys? Girls could get alcohol at a younger age than boys because “girls mature earlier than boys” it was RBG’s first major lawsuit over gender equality bc she, smartly, approached it from the opposite side saying that boys were injured by being excluded from something for their gender (or sex, technically). I can’t remember what state this was.

a lot of the lack of women participating in extreme sports can also be explained by "nurture" as opposed to "nature." considering how much young boys are encouraged to partake in risky sports and activities vs how girls are treated, it'd be astounding if this disparity WASN'T the case. sure, this theory is probably *part* of it, but societal norms HAVE to play a larger part than this is accounting for.

Right, I grew up in athletics and both male and female athletes are encouraged to play through their injuries. Broken finger? Could be worse! You don’t want to miss practice!
And I always thought that was counterproductive. You can’t play well if you are injured. You have to heal.
But, a lot more boys are encouraged to do athletics throughout their life and so they probably hear stuff like that a lot more.

@@mintyhippo8125 this is interesting, that thing about playing through the injury. I know enduring pain can be character building, learning to persevere through the physical pain is something most girls get a monthly lesson in starting at 13 or so, but playing while injured us like you said, incredibly counterproductive. Also, why? Like, I know coaches aren’t thinking of long term personal strengths they want to encourage- but I guess that’s just it. They aren’t thinking long term, they are only thinking of _this_ win. Wild.
Y’all are right I think sports/athletics must play a huge role in this. I know they’ve become a placeholder for societies as wars have become less frequent, especially as a way for young men to channel their energy. If I remember correctly that’s what got them going in colleges, a way to keep the young men on campus from fighting and breaking shit too much, back when colleges were strictly for men only.

I think although something like social economics could play a role in maybe the type of activities and then in turn how much they can do it.
like for example if you got hurt while doing something and have money you can actually get the help you need, like going to a doctor or take the rest you need for your body to recover as you are secure financially but if you don’t have the money that might not be possible .
Someone with money also have far more options on what could do and due to that have more access to things that might be safer and doesn’t also cause as much accidents . Which if they are wouldn’t mean someone isn’t likely to get hurt as much and could do things more often.

This isnt my original idea - I saw a thread where women were discussing the limitations placed on what type of women can be represented in media. How there are women who have the same personalities, interests and hobbies as the guys in Jackass but society has deemed their particular expressions of femininity (or lack of hegemonic femininity) egregious. The conversation was not just about the types of characters allowed to be associated with stuff like Jackass but also extended to criticize other arenas where women face resistance to their participation, for instance - how women do not get movies where they can play characters like those played by men like Adam Sandler in countless films of his. Women are penalized or excluded if they are seen as gross, nutty, loser, violent, super careless or risk/danger-disposed etc types but for men those qualities are hailed into types of personas/type of guys who's stories should be told along side those of other male archetypes and included because of their relatability.
Girls are of course discouraged from a young age from having such traits or behaviors, that's the stage of development when many started being gendered and the same games they played along with boys on the playground are now seen as too dirty or violent for them. Many girls just gave up but there are still a notable group with a "crazy bastard" personality type that manage to buck back against this and retain their sense of sense, no matter how unfeminine it may seem. Unfortunately, society, media and peers continue to reinforce the idea that they are invalid by erasing or exclusing their narratives or pushing narratives about them that are very untrue to reality, cautionary tales where they must change to become a true participant in their communities, or depictions as characters that make brief appearances only to be ridiculed, scorned and punished for daring to insult societal sensibilities about how women should exist. We can't talk about social phenomena without acknowledging the sociopolitical aspects because those are definitely part of the equation.
There's also the differences in how men are socialised to value hegemonic expressions of masculinity that are often toxic and self-defeating as a means to find value in the world despite those extreme types of traits only really showing up on such a mass scale when Western, imperialist, feudalistic & capilatistic patriarchal organizations of society started to take hold. People who live more similarly to ancient humans with hunter-gatherer, nomadic (and other types of indigenous) lifestyles do not have the same problems and have shunned such approaches in their philosophies.

"how women do not get movies where they can play characters like those played by men like Adam Sandler in countless films of his..... those qualities are hailed into types of personas/type of guys who's stories should be told along side those of other male archetypes and included because of their relatability"
Who made up the primary audience for those Adam Sandler movies?
Why are you shocked that the people watching the movie find men to be more relatable to themselves?
Would you have enjoyed [insert movies primarily marketed at women] as much if they replaced the leading role with a man?
Also, when is the last time you were at a daycare or elementary school? Absolutely nobody these days are telling their girls that playing with the boys is too dirty of violent.

Here a take on why I'm risk-taking: I just don't care. I'm not suicidal, but I also don't care that much. It brings me joy to do these things so I do them, while I wouldn't be stung by an insect for the thrill of the pain, skydiving, rafting, driving motorcycles real fast is fun. I realize someone else might have a complete different experience doing the exact same thing, but it doesn't mean I don't understand the risks, because I do.
Okey, so I die? Then what? I'm dead, there is nothing more. My mom will be sad? Yeah, I guess and that is just about the worst thing about it, but I cannot not live my life because it might affect someone else that I did not live my life according to how they would live their life. Then the counter is always, what if you just get handicapped? If it's bad enough I'm sure I can kill myself then.

We do so much to protect ourselves in the everyday, not being out at night, walking in groups if we do, keys in hand like a shiv on the way to our cars etc. Why would we willingly put ourselves in deadly situations?
And I think women are socialised to be caring more. Men are socialised as indivuals while women are socialised as carers, seeing everything we do through the lens of the people we have responsibility for, even if that is just the emotional responsibility of being friends/family to someone.

I most agree with the “Crazy Bastard Hypothesis” in terms of providing an initial, starting-point explanation for why some guys act the way they do. Without these biological pressures, it’s doubtful our cultures would’ve created the “risk-seeking male” on their own. Unlike animals, however, we have *do also have* thousands of years of culture (perhaps directed by evolution) and technology to add to these evolutionary pressures.
I agree that nature gave birth to this stuff, 100%… but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t believe that we have absolutely *RAN* with the idea. It’s not men who got the extreme, it’s humanity itself. There are a lot of people that take whatever a man and a women once, long ago, had to be, and then sprint full force in whatever direction that leads.

Also, I’d venture that what constitutes a “risk” is wildly different for men than it is for women. A first date, a walk in the park, a relationship, or divorcing an abusive husband can and does kill women every day. Women also die in childbirth. Engaging in heterosexual reproductive activity is incredibly risky for women, and yet the majority of them get a pink mace keychain and a doula and face it. We don’t have to go basejumping to feel terrified, we just have to walk to our cars alone. People tend to feel, however wrongly, that the more agency they have in an activity, the safer it is. Example: driving vs. flying, the likelihood that you’ll die in an accident is much higher if you drive a car, but people still fear flying much more than they do driving. I posit that because men have more agency when defending physical attacks from other men, they consider it less of a threat than, say, drowning. Women survive with our minds, men with their bodies.
Also, if you know any trans men, talk to them about how they felt when they starting on hormone therapy with testosterone. What sort of thoughts and motivators they had, how they responded or reacted differently, what they started feeling interested in or drawn to. It’s incredibly data rich and interesting to hear about what happens from the brain that has better and more specific vocabulary skills along with abilities to understand and articulate feelings with more nuance, you get a very cool, rare glimpse into why men out here wilin’

Sure, people who live in dangerous areas with high rates of violent crime will be more risk averse, that’s my point anyway- because any place that’s dangerous for men to be in is doubly dangerous for women, since men are more likely to have a physiological advantage over women and most women who are victims of violent crime actually know their attacker. Fighting a man if you are also a man just isn’t as dangerous as fighting a man if you are a woman.

9:23 I wouldn't say that just because just over a two-thirds of Jackass viewers are male that it weakens the theory about male risk taking being done to attract women at least for short term relationships. The NBA has similar viewership demographics by gender as Jackass but it doesn't mean that many of the women who don't watch the NBA regularly wouldn't want to be with a NBA player.
I think what's happening here is that women want a guy who stands out in one of the various intra-sexual competitions (risk-taking for Jackass, physical ability for the NBA, etc.). The challenge is choosing someone who stands out because "standing out" is a relative term. The way for a women to get around this challenge is to outsource the evaluation process by allowing men to compete in one of the various intra-sexual competitions then seeing which guy in the end gains the most deference from the other guys. This is probably why men watch stuff like Jackass and the NBA more. Men care more about the actual competition because they are the ones who have to do the actual competing in these particular intra-sexual competition to potentially gain mates; women generally don't care about the competition, only who comes out on top because they don't have to compete in these particular competitions (not to say women don't have their own intra-sexual competitions). Men who watch Jackass or the NBA are saying that "this is worth watching" thereby inadvertently giving deference to the guys they're watching on TV. The guys watching might secretly wish it was them but they weren't big enough risk takers (in the case of Jackass) or athletic enough (in the case of the NBA). The guys who were good enough in these particular intra-sexual competitions got viewership (deference) and money (resources).
Keep in mind everything in saying is a generalization that doesn't apply to every single male and female.

It might be too simple, but I really only think men are... well, stupid, enough to be a "daredevil."
I was talking with my partner the other day about musicians and why the field of virtuoso musicians, whether from Jazz, Classical, or Rock genres, are dominated by men. There are loads of fantastic female musicians in these genres, but at the very tip of the iceberg, the Liszts, Charlie Parkers, Guthrie Govans, etc., it's almost entirely male.
The best answer I could think of is that I can really only see a man willing to sacrifice so much of their life to becoming a musician like that. Charlie Parker reportedly practiced for 15 hours per day at one point, and Guthrie Govan would literally fall asleep and wake up with his guitar in his hands, something John Coltrane was also known to do.
While it obviously requires intelligence and some measure of talent to become a virtuoso musician, it also requires to pretty much throw away your social life, neglect your relationships, and sacrifice a great deal of time and energy.
Most of the women I know aren't so obsessed with mastery or success that they'd be willing to sacrifice their relationships (or their physical health, in the case of daredevils) for a shot at a personal legacy. I don't intend to insult these men, but it does seem that women tend to have altogether a more wise outlook on life, that the important things are relationships and experiences, not dedicating your life to snorting wasabi, which is what I meant by stating that most women are a little too smart (or perhaps wise is a better word) to be found in fields like this regularly.

We didn't evolve around modern media, but around personal interaction. The traits that would be on display on TV would have evolved to appeal to sexual partners in a tribal setting - i.e., on directly observed behavior within a close interpersonal context. How it manifests at that level could be completely different than how it's leveraged for refined entertainment content.

Normally I’m all for the nature/nurture argument. A lot of gendered behavior differences can be explained by nurture. For example, girls get diagnosed with ADHD later because being hyper and running around is acceptable for little boys, but not for little girls. This leads to girls masking their ADHD and developing coping mechanisms the best they can, while the boys get actual help.
But in this case I can’t see any explanation other than evolution. If a man does a crazy stunt, either a girl likes him and has a baby with him, or he dies. But since there’s a surplus of males ready to mate anyway, that same girl will still have a baby with somebody. Whereas if a woman does the risky stunt and fails, not only does that take out a huge chunk of the available child-bearing opportunities, if she’s already pregnant two people died instead of one. So it actually makes a lot of sense that there would be an evolutionary trend towards caution for females.

main difference regarding is obviously testosterone. the risk taking is one outlet: some guys prefer boxing, some football other climbing etc. some guys perform dangerous stunts.
And there is also stigmas in society...when men fall down get hurt and embarass themselves its concidered funny, when it happens with women...not so much.

This ''crazy bastard hypothesis'' seems really weak in my opinion, as it relies on a pretty faulty assumption about human behavioral biology.
The argument presented here depend on the idea that there is always a ''low supply of females for a high demand from males to mate'' (nice market analogy...), but that is only the case for tournament species, meaning species where males compete to mate as much as possible and don't participate much in raising the kid, like chimps do for example.
But the thing is that we're not chimps; there's no anthropological findings that suggest that we're strictly a tournament species, as there are tons of evidence of pre-civilization communities that were based around pair-bonding behaviors (where you typically don't compete for attention but mutually select for someone with whom you're gonna raise the kid and aren't gonna leave). If you say there could be such an hypothesis for lions or chimps, sure, why not, but there is no reason to believe that human behavior on a purely biological level depends upon this dynamic observed in other animals. Rather, it seems that the way humans form their practices and behaviors around mating is highly flexible and a mix from what we observe in other animals, which also makes it highly dependent on social/cultural practices.
Also a problem with this video; it doesn't take into account how culture might influence those behaviors in the first place, as this hypothesis doesn't explain why there are a small number of women risk-takers for example, or if it's something socially conditionned based on gender. it doesn't explore other hypothesis that are more readily admitted in biology, like that of an often observed deficiency of dopaminergic systems in high risk-takers

it's almost as if our brains work differently male/female and the hormones that flow through us influence us in different ways. also it just goes to show that women have their path to success pretty well walked on, whereas men, a lot of the time, need to take or invent alternate routes

I think the difference is quite simply the fact that men and women are different physically and emotionally. Does society play a factor in it? Yes, but no matter how men and women are raised, they always naturally go towards what they find interesting. Boys like action figures and sports girls like dolls and doing makeup. Women like drama shows and men like action shows.
Women like taller guys or those with muscle and men, usually like women who look pretty and shorter. The fact that men and women have a hard time understanding each other is because we are so different. And we live different lives completely.
