MAKING BUREK WITH MY BABA | Step by Step Guide to Making a Cheese and Meat Burek From Scratch!

- Baba is back and this week she is showing us how to make her famous burek!
Burek is a baked savory pie that can be filled with cheese, meat, apples, potatoes or anything else you like. My Baba has been making burek for years and I have been assisting her since I was 4 years old. We work together like a well oiled machine and always have a lot of fun in the kitchen together.
Today we cover everything you need to know about burek from making the dough, to preparing the filling, putting it all together, and baking it, or freezing it for the future.
I hope you guys enjoy this video because Baba and I had a lot of fun making it!
______________
Recipe
🥣 Ingredients
🍩 Dough
4 cups flour
2 cups water
1 tbsp. Salt
🗺 Directions
In a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook, mix the ingredients on speed 2 for about 2 minutes. Finish kneading the dough on a well floured work surface and divide the dough into 3 even balls. Oil the balls of dough and let sit for 10 minutes.
Afterwards, roll the dough out into medium sized circles, oil them again, and let sit for 30 to 60 minutes. This will allow the dough to be extra stretchy.
🧀 Cheese Filling
350g Feta cheese
150g Ricotta Cheese
🗺 Directions
Crumble the feta with your hands and add the ricotta. We don't add any eggs or seasoning, but feel free to adjust to taste.
🥩 Meat
500g Ground pork
Onions
🗺 Directions
Combine chopped white onions and ground pork to a pan and cook completely. Let cool before adding to burek.
🛢 Oil Mixture
Margarine or butter
Canola oil
🗺 Directions
In a small pot, melt the margarine and oil over medium heat. Let cool completely before using.
Take one round of dough and stretch it out as wide as possible. If your dough is not stretching enough, let it sit for a little longer. Rip off the ends of the dough and place them to the side. Sprinkle the dough layer with a few tablespoons of the oil mixture and fold the dough into a square.
Do the same thing with the second layer of dough. Place the first layer of dough in the center of the stretched out dough and add the filling of your choice. Fold the dough over, set to the side and repeat the process with the third and final layer.
Preheat the oven to 350°F roast and bake the burek in a well oiled pan for about 35 minutes or until the burek has pulled away from the edges of the pan and can move around. Flip it upside down on a cutting board and cut into 8 pieces.

🌟 Review and Tips
1. Keep the ends that you rip off the dough! Keep them in the fridge overnight and use it the next day to make more layers for your burek. Follow the steps above and you will be good to go.
2. It’s easier to work on a tablecloth instead of a bare table. It makes it easier to fold the dough and prevents it from sticking to the table.
3. If you don’t want to bake the burek right away, store it in a freezer proof bag and freeze for up to 6 months. Before baking it, defrost the burek and bake as instructed.
4. Before putting the burek in a bag, add a label to the parchment paper so you remember what the filling is.

I’m Albanian and wanted to suprize my Albanian family with Burek!❤ Thank you! By the way your grandma reminds me of mine 🥹 you guys are beautiful ☺️
❤❤❤
I'm Albanian too and I came across this because I don't know how to make it. My mom makes it from scratch.
Had Burek back in 1987 in Bled, Yugoslavia. Never forgot how good it was.
Hi, your Grandma is so sweet❤. Thank you for all the advises and recipes.
Oh my gosh Baba made me cry!! She sounds like my grandmother's is grandmother's and my mother's best friend who just passed away. I am a Croatian but that accent is spot on all of my amazing A woman of my life. Thank you thank you for the video and I adore making Burek to this day
So sorry for your loss. Babas are one of a kind and give a love like no other!
Quick question, what type of feta does Baba use? greek, french, Serbian? Is there a certain brand?
Please cook more with Baba please!!! Those outtakes are hysterically cute!!
Ah sorry Stephanie just seeing this! I will double check the exact brand and get back to you!
@@stephaniesansebastian8090 I double checked and we used feta from Shepard’s Gourmet! We usually buy it from Costco but you can use any feta you like!
Veliki pozdrav za babu. Pricaj tako da te ceo svet razume!

I’ve been baking Burek for about 10 years now. I loveeee it so much. My son is mixed Bosnian and Black. His Dad and I had him when we were 15, we are no longer together but I’m so happy I learned how to cook his family’s traditional cooking so he can enjoy while he’s home with me! Everyone loves it soooo much in my family. My son loves that he gets the best of both cooking worlds! We love Burek (Spinach and Cheese are our favorite - I’ve never tried with apple!) we also love Tulumba. I’ve had so many delicious dishes from the other side of his family. I loved this video and you and your Baba are beautiful 😍
Thank you so much Renne! I love that you were able to introduce a whole new food culture into your family, that's awesome! If you're interested, I have a video with my baba going over how to make the apple filling, I'm sure your family will love it. I haven't had tulumbe in so long but they are delicious and now I want to make some 😂
Hvala za video! We love watching the 2 of you together - cant wait to make the burek. Your Baba is gorgeous! Watching from Australia :)

Very similar yemeni dish called break. But a little bit of yeast. It has turkish origins. But we also do a plain none stuffed one with nigella seeds on top and its eaten with honey called bint alsahan which translates to daughter of the dish
❤️❤️❤️
Hi, I really like watching you and Baba cook. Thats a nice table where can I buy it? Also, what kind of tablecloth do I need?
... using cold or warm water for the dough? Thank you.Looks amazing your Burek!
Nadia, you must cook and laugh with your Baba as much as you can, just try with or without camera don't matter. My Baba is in heaven since 2007 and really i have spend enough time with her and she cooked me the best sarma, burek, everything, but still i miss her so much! Please listen to my advice.

Thank you! Baba told me that your layer burek, and roll pita. I'm sure everyone has there own version of it, but no matter what it will taste delicious!
@@tetkanadia9045 Yes that could be it. The layered one we called gibanica and it was always made with eggs and cheese. :)
@@frostflower5555 yes we make gibanica too and it’s delicious!
@@janakolasinac1686 My mom layered it.
