I hear this. I am trying to lose weight but refuse to weigh myself because the numbers psych me out. I’m just going off of how my clothes fit, how I look in the mirror and how I feel. I’m focusing on getting STRONGER and not thinner. Somehow that mind shift helps keep me from spiraling.

It’s NOT working for me. I weighed myself at the beginning of a new workout routine. And, I noticed some of my bottoms weren’t fitting anymore. For 1 months, I had been religiously doing 2 separate routines. 1 in morning that worked butt/hips/thighs. Another at night b4 bed to work the abs. Was doing 2/3 sets of each(followed to a T). Stopped eating after 7 pm. Cut out the sweets, too. Again, did this for 1 month. Well, after that month, decided to weigh myself. I gained 2 lbs and tried to put on a pair of pants that fit 1 month b4. They DO NOT fit anymore. So, another pair of pants gone. I’ve only got 3 pairs of denim pants. The other 2 are draw string(they fit better). Now, I’m doing a new exercise routine. I’m only on day 3

Stubborn areas looking worse before they look better is sooo true and thanks for pointing this out! I know the "woosh effect" is controversial and hasn't been scientifically proven but I've noticed that my waist, thighs and back of arms will look bigger and puffy for a while, sometimes up to two weeks then over a day or two will suddenly deflate and look leaner and tight and my clothes will fit looser. Those plateaus can be disheartening if you don't know what's going on but as long as you make sure you're sticking to a reasonable calorie deficit and maintaining your workouts, eventually you can see the plateaus as a sign of incoming results. Paying attention to your electrolyte balance and any nutrient deficiencies helps as well.

YESSS! The whoosh effect is super interesting and I've implemented the higher carb after lower carb strategically with clients to amazing ends! When I got back into weights and weightlifting after a knee and back injury, I did a lot of stability and free weight stuff that often worked core muscles. A few months in, I felt better in my core, but I noticed my entire midsection was puffier and BIGGER. I poked myself all over and realized I still had a lot of fat, but I had a great mass of muscle that was never there before. It didn't mean what I was doing wasn't "working", it meant that I was that combo of fitter and fat at the ame time. Told myself not to panic, and sure enough a couple months later, I had more shape, my core was even harder, and there was less squish to poke to get it.
I think with me specifically, I put on muscle super easily, and my medications and diet had also changed around the same time. So I was gastro issues and bloating were also adding to the changes, and that varies from week to week.
Something that helped me years ago is even if I had the goal "fat to lean", there's a whole lot of in between in there for a long period of time. First step is always fat and stronger, or fat and fitter. Which is your first goal. Honestly to improve health, it should be anyone's goal. "Me, but a bit better at something this week than I was last week." That's success for any one at any size, age, or people with restrictions.

@@uniquegeek2708 yesss, I’m so glad you said this! I used to be so confused by my stomach looking bigger when I could feel the abs underneath but I realized that when my stomach was just fat, it was able to sink inwards giving a flatter look but with a layer of muscle underneath, there’s nowhere for the top layer of fat to go but out lol.
As I lean out you begin to see not just the flat undefined look from before, but more of that textured, “contracted” core which is nice to see but takes some getting used to!
Still a ways to go but staying consistent and enjoying the process and congrats on your progress as well!

My mom went on WW about 5-6 years ago and dropped from a size 8-10 to a size 0-2. She cut out most food, almost all fat, and relies on "fat free" foods full of garbage. She now has full blown osteoporosis, her hair is thinning, and she can't lift more than 15 pounds for more than a minute. She's withered away to nothing and it's PAINFUL to watch. I'm almost 40 and intent on continuing CrossFit until my 90s, Lord willing. I'd rather be a few pounds overweight and strong than a size 0 and slowly disappearing.

The scale can be a great tool to help us maintain I've found. Because when we've achieved an aesthetic or feel we like, we can then weigh and see what number we're at. @Camille-wk9zs your body will also naturally gravitate toward what it "wants" to be. A year and a half ago, I was 135 lbs. A pregnancy, higher protein diet, and weight lifting has elevated me to 180. It was super rough at first to gain so much weight, but I'm also the healthiest I've been. I have gone up in size, but it's from things like chest and back growth, not fat growth. You might just not be seeing the muscle growth if you still have some fat. I've even noticed that my stomach (still a bit saggy/fat) seems larger, but it's because the muscle growth underneath is pushing the fat out, if that makes sense. All that to say, don't despair because you may be growing in a good way, but unable to really see the changes because we are our own worst critics

I won’t go into detail but I started my “wellness” journey 5 yrs ago. It will be 5 yrs on 29 March. The day I medically released from the military. I started at 253 lbs w/RA, PTSD, menopausal, left a toxic relationship. Today I’m around 140lbs. My journey was for my mental health. I had to learn a new way of getting back into shape and maintaining. With spinning, strength training, and just being out for a walk I got here. I truly missed most of my transformation because it wasn’t about weight loss although I knew it would be a sideshow. I didn’t change my diet. I drank way too much. The only time I got on the scale was when I would wake up and feel lighter or my clothes were fitting differently if at all. I actually reached my “goal weight” December 2022. I felt good physically and but I knew I couldn’t stop. My mental health was better but I still had a ways to go. End June 2023 I reached my current goal….I was so surprised….I was 52 and a lot of my friends who were always in shape were now coming to me asking how I got rid of my belly….I didn’t know!!! That’s when I started paying attention and taking more pics…..today I am maintaining that body weight….easily. My transition was so natural. My diet is really good now and I’m still seeing really nice gains and acceptable loses. I keep my scale more to make sure I’m not losing anymore body weight but losing body fat and growing muscle. It’s still crazy to me how I can have a harder time putting on my leggings….I realized it’s because my body is “hard”….thats a gain for me! Good luck to all….it truly has been a “healing” journey for me….✌🏽❤️🇨🇦

I became too sedentary because of a sprained ankle and a torn knee, which then cause weight gain. I started Macros with a focus on Protein and working out, being careful of my injuries. I lost almost 4.5 pounds in a week, gained a bit, came down a bit, but when I measured my waist after 3 weeks it was down one inch and a quarter, and my clothes are fitting better. Cori, you are right, the scale is one thing, but the measurements are another, and I find the process very encouraging. And btw, I am not meal deprived, and sometimes I'm like, "I have to eat again?...uh...ok..." Love your channel Cori!

Buying a $20 body fat scale off Amazon was a game-changer. I've lost 30 pounds in 2.5 months -- 29 pounds of fat, and 1 pound of muscle. I was afraid that losing wait sorta quickly would mean I was atrophying muscle, but only 1 pound of muscle in exchange for quickly losing 29 pounds of fat... Fair trade-off.

Eat at about maintenance calories, now I'm slowly increasing into a lean bulk range. But I've gone from a loose medium shirt and size 6 jeans to an extra small t-shirt and loose size 2 jeans. Thank you for that video! Checking those signs really boosts motivation.
I started to experience that exact process on myself and while scales are frustrating me, it feels amazing.
When I was 19, I bought a T-shirt that I really liked and started to use it to keep track of how fast and thick my hair grew (trust me, for a person who suffered from alopecia that was causing me too much distress not to track it). And at the same time, unintentionally, I tracked my body shape as well. Through the years my weight fluctuated, though I always was overweight. For my teen years, I usually was about 82-85 kg (180-187 lbs) with 170 cm (5.6") but later due to some health issues I gained weight and became 103 kg (227 lbs). I managed to lose my weight to 82 kg again and it has been stuck for some months now. A few months ago I started training and while I weigh the same as when I was 23, that exact T-shirt does not stretch on me like the skin on a drum, while I'm turning 32 next month. I'm literally looking and feeling better than when I was ten years younger! And now, instead of before, I'm stronger and for the first time in my life can do push-ups (wasn't able my whole life).

Love this. No diet advice as far as foods go, just a simple, easy to understand language that says, "lose weight gradually while at the same time building muscle, and you will get to where you want to be.". Don't eliminate anything from your diet. Track calories so you're in a slight caloric deficit. Eat healthy most of the time while eating crap only in situations where you need a break. Weight train, even if it's hardly anything.
Once you get into shape, then you can fine tune to become leaner if you want. Or you can go deep and start to build a body that is your best body. Doing it this way you change your relationship with food and you'll be better off in the long run. You are who I should have been listening to this whole time.

When we have specific health concerns, often what used to work no longer does and we need to meet our body where it is at now. It means potentially doing less to see that momentum build as our body adjusts. You will even want to track your food to notice your intolerances...it isn't uncommon for dairy and gluten to be something my clients with Hashimoto's cut out. But my dietitians like to even look at other foods that may be contributing to issues, while making sure clients aren't UNDER fueling to create more thyroid problems. And with everything, sometimes you have to focus on restorative training for a bit and be prepared to ebb and flow as you rebuild!

I stepped on the scale today and my weight went up by five pounds to 196. I thought what the heck. My clothes were fitting better, I have been burning up to 850 calories on the Peloton 5x per week, and my lifts have been improving. My pull-ups went to 17 and pushups to 75. I have been eating no more than 2,400 calories and at 6' 191 lbs that's definitely a deficit for me. I have a 32-inch waist so I'm not at all fat. There certainly is no way I gained five pounds of fat in a DAY. That's 18,000 calories! I know my scale is accurate. A gallon of water weighs 8.3 pounds and I've been drinking a lot more water.
However, then I remembered I had just started using creatine again AND I had hit every muscle in my body with weightlifting over the last four days.
Creatine is a substance naturally found in many foods and our bodies need it and produce it. It's stored in muscle and helps produce ATP (how our bodies produce energy, so it increases energy production). Well, creatine also draws water into muscles (and likely increases thirst as does working out). Working out also causes the body to draw blood, water, and nutrients into muscle tissue. This is how muscle grows. If you weight lift you will likely get a "pump" to your muscles that will be very noticeable for perhaps a few hours (really noticeable for usually half an hour), but your muscles may retain more fluid for up to a couple days. Glycogen can also help fill up muscle tissue (stored energy). All of this can add up over an entire body. 75 to 80% of our body is water so water retention changes are HUGE.
In men and women, skeletal muscle is ~40 to 50% of our lean body weight. It is way more than anything else.
You can have more water retention in muscles, you could have just eaten breakfast, you could have just drunk a glass of water or two, glycogen levels could have changed, even going to the bathroom could change your weight by a pound or two, etc. These can ALL change your body weight. Even a 5' female could fluctuate by a few pounds just because of the changes I listed.
If you are not losing strength and you are in a calorie deficit then you are burning fat no matter what the scale says.
The scale only helps indicate progress over weeks. If at lower body fat, it doesn't help at all. For those tens of pounds overweight the scale can help indicate progress over weeks.

    • @redefiningstrengthOC
      @redefiningstrengthOC  27 дней назад

The scale does fluctuate for so many reasons not related to changes in muscle or fat. And the more muscle you have, often the more you can fluctuate as you can store more glycogen and therefore water even too! Love that you assessed what changes have been made and didn't let the scale stop you from doing the habits you needed to see that body recomp!

Today I did 30 mins on my stepper and 15 minutes on my bike because I was watching a movie...
Funny thing is I know I've stayed on track but got frustrated this week becauase I weighed more than last Friday... I was excited because I saw four pounds drop last week.

I’m in this dilemma right now,for some reason youtube algorithm knows what I’m going through , last year July I started doing home work out, mostly focus on my glutes and core area.I weighed 129lbs,(5’2) 38years old female. I used to do fasting,OMAD, but before OMAD I weighed 158 lbs. I stop fasting because I didn’t like what it was doing to my body, I lost my butt and my breast, flat as board, I don’t have energy,my mood is terrible,I’m losing hair, so I started working out, then I just realized I am so weak,I can’t lift a 5lbs dumbbell.I stop dieting put more protein in my diet and do lifting.I gained weight from 129 to 149 for a whole year, I panicked! How did that happened?Luckily before I started my journey in lifting I measured my body, breast, waist, butt and thighs, now I have basis where the gains go, and now I lift 45lbs each hand,I’m so happy I’m in a better health now,I’m not going back to fasting.

Love that you're focusing on moving forward and figuring out what feels best for you! And making sure we are eating enough is key. Under fueling, even if due to time restricted eating, can lead to us seeing our results going back despite training hard.

I hardly ever weigh myself unless I’m at the doctor. So this explains why I’ve been noticing that my clothes fit differently and I can’t feel as much jiggle when I walk anymore, lol, but the scale has only moved by like 4 pounds. And the changes are happening rather slowly. So I guess I may be doing something right :-)

It’s going down due to 1st week water loss but stubborn areas measuring the same.
Some reason I don’t want photos, I have enough of what I don’t want to see.
I’m watching my arms and legs…

Thanks for this video. Now I know how to determine if I lost fat.
I didnt weigh myself after my first month of exercise & 1x a day meal. Because my commitment to daily exercise is for long term.
    Why weigh every week?
But I had my blood pressure checked. It is now lower than before. 100/70
As for the clothes, that how I measure. I had this top shirt.
Now it is loose on the tummy and back area. But my arms need to lose some more. So i started today, carrying weight while walking stairs.

I know my ass is all muscle and it’s tight but I have dense bones and weigh heavy. This isn’t necessarily on topic, but is it possible to lose the “bat wings” through exercise and diet? I have a cousin who is mid 50s and always has been in good shape through weight training. She’s starting to lose definition in her tricep area and a plastic surgeon told her she’d never be able to reshape her triceps to get rid of loose skin but would need plastic surgery. I can’t believe that’s true, but in every fitness/weight training video I’ve watched, I’ve never seen this issue addressed credibly. Your thoughts Cori? Or anyone here who has been able to reshape their tris?

You can't spot reduce an area, and often stubborn areas are the last we lose from and require us to be consistent past the point we want to quit. So for fat loss she probably needs to adjust macros. And increasing protein can help with skin health and strength to "tighten up" and control what we can control...along with lifting. But our skin strength does change as we get older and if we lost more weight and have some loose skin, I won't lie to you, sometimes it doesn't tighten up fully based on genetics, how fast we lost the weight and even our training practices. But control what you can control. Protein, lifting, hydration...even testing out collagen supplementation for some can help! And staying consistent to lose fat when we want to quit as those stubborn areas are stubborn for a reason!

I gained like like 5plbs I gained like 3% muscle and lost like 2% of fat and the calories intake a day is 1,600 calories a day and I was like that isn’t going to happen. I always eat way more calories a day I was like I am not going to listen to that number.
