Wow--that's a lot of basil! I have great luck with basil here, when other seeds not be as easy.:) I have a collection of many basil varieties growing here. One issue I've found, is that we have a lot of bees, and they have seemed to cross pollinate. The flavors seem to get muddled.:) I'm really inspired by your herb plants and pots in general!
@@growNglow That I know--it's just the heat of summer makes them bolt quickly.:) I tried to use them early, and plant new basil often to get the best for cooking.
As with most seed sowing, it is much easier to control moisture and sun by having 100 or more in a seed tray. Then we can transfer to pots, or a bed. Thank you for watching
My friend gave me the seeds that had been put in between wet paper towel and now they have small roots and fragile. They are stick on the paper towel. I can't pull them out. I don't know what to do to plant them in the soil. I'm afraid they are dying . Now I put the wet towel on top of the garden mix soil in the pot . I can't cover them with soil because of they are small and weak. I try to keep them moist by water it once in a while and cover the pot with a plastic wrap to prevent them from bugs attack and drying. Any ideas ?
If they have sprouted you should just put them in damp compost in pots. Do not over water, or water at all. You can cover pot in plastic to increase humidity for a few days if you so wish. They need lots of sun now. There is no need to be fussy with any of the basil varieties. They are very vigorous. Good luck, and thank you for watching
Thai basil is my absolute favorite! I've never had luck trying to grow it though. It only gets very short, with tiny leaves and goes to flower immediately almost. I love the big thai basil I can get at the pho restaurant and am desperate to know how to grow it well. I also love parsley ... it is so good for you too.
@@growNglow Believe me, I live in CA and its supposed to be good weather, and most stuff grows OK. I think it is the genetics of the Basil I get. Also, I do pinch the buds when it starts to flower, but that can quickly turn into a full time job there are so many.

You could start them inside on a window sill. If you put 3 seeds in one pot, kill off all but one. That way you do not need to transplant, and thus gain a couple of weeks of extra summer. Good luck this time and thank you for watching
When I have snipped the flowers off basil what seems to happen is that the stems start to get woody. You have some really good plants there ... but strong and healthy. It looks like you don't have that much sun though. I was thinking these Thai basils need a lot of sunlight, but you seem to have strong by diffuse sunlight. I'm in CA, USA and I just have not been able to grow thai basil that big.
I came here looking to learn how to grow Thai basil. I am in South Texas and there is a Vietnamese Restaurant and, every time I order Pho, I request basil but they never have any. It's heartbreaking that I can not experience my PHO with Thai Basil.......so sad. My life is in ruins...Thank you for showing me the way of growing Thai Basil
i am growing this for the 1st time here in Canada and summer is fast coming to an end... What is the best way to preserve thai basil for winter soups? i heard drying it ruins the flavor
I think the best thing to do is to freeze it. There are different methods to freeze, from basil ice cubes, to flash freezing the individual leaves (blanched or not). For the cubes, put the basil in a food processor with a small amount of olive oil, and put the mixture in ice cube trays. You could keep growing it indoors in a homemade hydroponics unit. Depends on where you grow them, and your climate. It is very hard to 'kill' them from too little or to much water. If it is very dry in a pot, the leaves will droop, but will stand up again very shortly after you water. Thank you for watching.
Both what you mention are Tulsi (Holy Basil). O. sanctum is a taxonomy synonym of O. tenuiflorum. O. basilicum var. thyrsiflora is one of the Thai basil varieties. It is closely related to sweet basil (which is also a O. basilicum variety). Thank you for watching, Michael.
@@growNglow Thanks! My wife is Thai and if she is a good example of what Thai think the Thai are VERY particular about their basil, I've grown what Americans use and she says it's NOTHING like Thai "Grapow".
Well get some seeds from Thailand 😁. There are different Thai basils. I live in SE Asia with climate similar to Thailand. The commercial seeds here are what I grow. Thai basil has a liquorice (licorice) smell. Tulsi has very little aroma. Genovese (sweet) basil smells like, well smells like basil.
Tons of Thai basil lol I love Thai basil with tomatoes , purple onion and Italian dressing

I doubt they crossed. In any case, you should not let basil go to flower. It takes away most of the flavor.

Just started my plant basil seedlings today! Just curious why didn't you just start them off in the big pot?

It grows pretty much the same as Genovese Basil or Holy Basil (Tulsi). You can grow indoors if it gets too cold. Thank you for watching.

Correction - references in Thai say real Thai Basil (กะเพรา) is actually Ocimum Tenuiflorum (Thin Flowers Basil) and not Ocimum Sanctum (Holy Basil).

@@michaelschnittker7388Yes, that's because it's 2 different things: Thai Basil and Holy Basil. But both are used in Thai cooking, from what I know.
