      suburban homestead I planted basil indoors in pots in August because it was so hot outside. The plants started growing fine and I took the pots outside, and they’ve all been doing fine. Last month, September, I planted basil seeds outside in pots, and nothing came up. But I figured out that ants had either eaten all the seeds or packed them off. So I planted more seeds in pots inside the house and they all came up.

    I often had problems direct sowing basil seed, but found a successful method I have used for years now. I direct seed my basil in a large area and immediately cover with row cover. Watering on the row cover prevents the shallowly planted basil seeds from washing away. The extra heat helps germination and the row cover can help hold moisture in the top of the soil while your basil germinates. I get excellent germination. If plants are too close, I did up a clump when very small and transplant. I so enjoy your channel. Thank you

    I always do basil indoors in small cells. When it gets bigger if it's warm outside I plant outside, if it stays cold a long time (like this year) I up-plant into bigger cups until I can plant. I use it throughout the garden as a companion plant to deter pests, so I need a lot of it to plant in many places.

      @@thegardenofsteven9907 I try to to up plant before they get root bound, which of course depends on how big the initial cells are. I have to wait a little too long because I often start too many things and I don't have enough room on my growing Shelf to put everything in bigger containers because then nothing will fit. But generally speaking if the roots are pouring out of the bottom it's time to put them in something bigger. If you start with something big, it'll take it longer to do that.

    Last year I planted my basil in the ground for the first time in many years, it did very poorly, nowhwere near enought to make the 4 quarts of Ligurian pesto that I make and keep in the deep freeze for a years supply, this year I started them in potting mix, Fertilome potting mix, all other brands have become trash, and my basil did splendidly, more than enough for my 4 quarts of Ligurian pesto that I make with Parmaggian Reggiano, from Italy, toasted pine nuts, green, pungent olive oil a bit of salt and two cloves of garlic per batch, then, since I only use modern appliances only when I must, I pounded my pesto with a mortar and pestle as I do every year. I started my basil early, each plant in a large pot.
    0:37 For me, here in Ohio, it is flea beetles, flea beetles devour the young plants even before they unfurl their cotyledons.
    3:03 Nice looking rex begonia. 4:58 The 1890s, retro, steampunk look is nice to see. I use animated steampink wallpapers on my phone, computer etc. Steam power made amazing things possible, If we had been living before steam power, then got steampower, we would have thought that we have entered a glden new age, an exuberant age where anything is possible.
    6:26 I have been gardening for 50+ years, practically since I was in diapers, I have grown nearly everything, some would call me a master gardener, but i don't feel that I am, a person can be ever so taleted, but if weather and insects are against us, then success is a huge struggle. Most years 90% of what I plant succeeds. The challenging one: brussells sprouts. I can have a long row of brussells sprout plants, all as tall as my shoulders, and perhaps 20% of them have sprouts, the rest, no sprouts. Every year it is like this. Whatever shall I do?? I think that next springtime I shall plant them VERY early, 2 varieties, a long season and a short season varieties, plant them in very large pots so that they are big and built up for rapid development, becuase even though they fluorish in cool weather, if that cool weather is gotten in the fall when days are too short for any significant growth, in springtime, the cool weather is gotten with long and lengthening days, during which, growth is rapid.
    9:10 I have been a artisan making elaborately carved wooden furnishings and walking canes for many years, so, sometimes, I have used my Dockyard spoon gouges to transfer tiny seedlings.
    9:51 Basil is native to the Mediteranian where the soil is calcareous, for starting the seedlings, a good quality ordinary potting soil is good enough, however for them to mature well, they need to have a significant amount of calcium carbonate in the soil. What I do is generously cover the entire 50 foot wide, 300 feet long garden with cow manure early May, before I spread it, I have already hand spread a few hundred pounds of agricultural lime on the ground, this way, when the plow turns it all upside down, I have rain water percolating the calcium carbonate down through the manure, the alkaline calcium carbonate reacts chemically with the organic acids in the manure causing nitrogen to volatize and also go into solution making it bio available for the growing plants. About 3 years of this is how many years that it will take for real improvement to occur and liberate us from chemical fertilizers. Even more important since I am hearing that because of the pseudo "science" of "global warming/climate change", government policies are causing 30% reductions in fertilizer production driving costs of chemical fertilizers higher and more difficult to obtain. Let me guess, China, not under these restrictions, might, maybe provide the needed fertilizer, that is if they are not restricted or shut down because of the scamdemic.
    Thank you for sharing. My comments are stated as if I am with you in person in your garden discussing things.

    2Esdras2:31
    I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, O Lord, show this also to thy servant: whether after death, as soon as every one of us yields up his soul, we shall be kept in rest until those times come when thou wilt renew the creation, or whether we shall be tormented at once?" 76 He answered me and said, "I will show you that also, but do not be associated with those who have shown scorn, nor number yourself among those who are tormented. 77 For you have a treasure of works laid up with the Most High; but it will not be shown to you until the last times. 78 Now, concerning death, the teaching is: When the decisive decree has gone forth from the Most High that a man shall die, as the spirit leaves the body to return again to him who gave it, first of all it adores the glory of the Most High. 79 And if it is one of those who have shown scorn and have not kept the way of the Most High, and who have despised his law, and who have hated those who fear the Most High -- 80 such spirits shall not enter into habitations, but shall immediately wander about in torments, ever grieving and sad, in seven ways. 81 The first way, because they have scorned the law of the Most High. 82 The second way, because they cannot now make a good repentance that they may live. 83 The third way, they shall see the reward laid up for those who have trusted the covenants of the Most High. 84 The fourth way, they shall consider the torment laid up for themselves in the last days. 85 The fifth way, they shall see how the habitations of the others are guarded by angels in profound quiet. 86 The sixth way, they shall see how some of them will pass over into torments. 87 The seventh way, which is worse than all the ways that have been mentioned, because they shall utterly waste away in confusion and be consumed with shame, and shall wither with fear at seeing the glory of the Most High before whom they sinned while they were alive, and before whom they are to be judged in the last times. 88 "Now this is the order of those who have kept the ways of the Most High, when they shall be separated from their mortal body. 89 During the time that they lived in it, they laboriously served the Most High, and withstood danger every hour, that they might keep the law of the Lawgiver perfectly. 90 Therefore this is the teaching concerning them: 91 First of all, they shall see with great joy the glory of him who receives them, for they shall have rest in seven orders. 92 The first order, because they have striven with great effort to overcome the evil thought which was formed with them, that it might not lead them astray from life into death. 93 The second order, because they see the perplexity in which the souls of the unrighteous wander, and the punishment that awaits them. 94 The third order, they see the witness which he who formed them bears concerning them, that while they were alive they kept the law which was given them in trust. 95 The fourth order, they understand the rest which they now enjoy, being gathered into their chambers and guarded by angels in profound quiet, and the glory which awaits them in the last days. 96 The fifth order, they rejoice that they have now escaped what is corruptible, and shall inherit what is to come; and besides they see the straits and toil from which they have been delivered, and the spacious liberty which they are to receive and enjoy in immortality. 97 The sixth order, when it is shown to them how their face is to shine like the sun, and how they are to be made like the light of the stars, being incorruptible from then on. 98 The seventh order, which is greater than all that have been mentioned, because they shall rejoice with boldness, and shall be confident without confusion, and shall be glad without fear, for they hasten to behold the face of him whom they served in life and from whom they are to receive their reward when glorified. 99 This is the order of the souls of the righteous, as henceforth is announced; and the aforesaid are the ways of torment which those who would not give heed shall suffer hereafter." 100 I answered and said, "Will time therefore be given to the souls, after they have been separated from the bodies, to see what you have described to me?" 101 He said to me, "They shall have freedom for seven days, so that during these seven days they may see the things of which you have been told, and afterwards they shall be gathered in their habitations." 102 I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, show further to me, thy servant, whether on the day of judgment the righteous will be able to intercede for the unrighteous or to entreat the Most High for them, 103 fathers for sons or sons for parents, brothers for brothers, relatives for their kinsmen, or friends for those who are most dear." 104 He answered me and said, "Since you have found favor in my sight, I will show you this also. The day of judgment is decisive and displays to all the seal of truth. Just as now a father does not send his son, or a son his father, or a master his servant, or a friend his dearest friend, to be ill or sleep or eat or be healed in his stead, 105 so no one shall ever pray for another on that day, neither shall any one lay a burden on another; for then every one shall bear his own righteousness and unrighteousness." 2 Esdras 2:31

    Spinach does best in cool soil temp- or even while nights are 45 degrees-put seed to soak in weak fish emulsion in a teacup overnight, then drain. Let dry, while you fluff up the space to plant them. Plant 1 every 2-4" (I prefer a staggered double row) and cover 1" soil, tamp down & mark row. Softly sprinkle every day. Should emerge fine in a week.

    Any tips for sprouting chives or onion seeds. None of my chives sprouted and only a couple of onions. I tried the plate germination method on the chives and they seemed to get too moldy and never sprouted. Any tips?

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  4 года назад +2

      They never sprouted because they were dead. Onions can loose viability very quickly. Whenever I start seed I saved my self from the previous year, germination is close to 100% Sometimes I have purchased onion/ chive seeds only to discover they were not viable.

    Is the trick to the plate method to keep it damp and never let it dry out the paper towel?

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  4 года назад +1

      Yes, absolutely. Always damp, but not swimming in water. If you ever let it dry, the seeds die.

    Separate seeds from spent flower heads with blender or shake in bag. Strain & blow chaff away.
    Cover plant with small hole mesh bag to reduce cross polination & bug infestation. Basil is self pollinating so shake plant to help pollination. Pass the word.

      It depends so much on your local climate and soil texture. In hot tropical places with sandy soil (90F plus), you’ll need to water twice a day. In cooler places with clay soil maybe once every three days or less. Wait for the soil to dry a little bit before watering again.1st

    Hello! I tried the plate germination method and noticed the basil seeds formed gel-like cover. Does that mean that they are not bad seeds? And do I need to add water on the seeds daily? Will the tissue paper get dry? If it's nighttime, do I need to provide a lamp from the seeds?

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  4 года назад +1

      The gel is normal for basil, just like chia seeds when in contact with water. Always make sure the paper towel is moist. It can never dry up. You don’t need to keep lights on at night especially when it is still a seedling. Keep the temperature at around 70-80 degrees (room temperature)

    I wonder if you drink basil seeds, like chia seeds? We asians use Thai basil seeds especially Thai lemon basil seeds, since it is abundant and easy and cheap. We drink it for generations especially during hot, drought season to cool our body. Never try with western basil, i keep killing my western basil with overwatering, well except the amazingly delicious Napoletano basil, that was completely demolished by a fat caterpillar.
