    It's interesting that the first two Pumpkins songs you've done are among their mellowest. This band was known for going HARD! "I Am One", "Zero", "Bullet With Butterfly Wings", "Cherub Rock" are some of the songs that represent their sound more accurately. Jay will appreciate those.

      I swear on my momma I was just about to suggest "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" and "Today." They are my two favorite Smashing Pumpkins songs, and the two that I think Jordan would like the most. I also feel like BWBW was the song that won over a lot of people who weren't fans before, so I'll be pretty surprised if he doesn't like it. Some people are saying Zero which I forgot about. He might like that one too.

    • @Istr
      @Istr 10 месяцев назад +1

      They're one of the best bands in the whole world, still I must say that people tend to misuse the word "underrated". Pumpkins were hailed as "the new Nirvana" when they released their first two albums (much to their dismay) and Mellon Collie has sold more than ten million copies in the US alone, and all from gold to four times platinum in the rest of the world, and remain one of the big 90:s rock bands.
      Of course, one could argue that they're good enough to be among the best selling bands of all time, which they aren't, but I at least wouldn't personally brand them massively underrated.

Yes of course with Rihanna, Drake, Celine Dion, Garth Brooks, Julio Iglesias, Katy Perry, lil Wayne, lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Linkin park, Shania twain, Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, Mariah Carey, Ariana grande, post Malone, usher, Taylor Swift. These are all artists that sold way more records than smashing pumpkins. I mean come on the bland generic country radio of Garth Brooks, the amazing musicianship of lil Wayne, I mean Drake comeon now mozart has nothing on Drake! Linkin Park omg thats alternative rock on a whole other level than pumpkins, Ed Sheeran well you know he's like Lennon and McCartney combined that little ginger. The sappy ballads of Celine Dion. The exquisite pop craftsmanship of that left handed pop genius JUSTIN BIEBER. I could go an on and on, but I think you get my point, clearly these artists are on a whole other level of musicianship as compared to smashing pumpkins 😂

      Good point. The full album is a double set, called "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness", and harkens back to the full-album rock operas of the '70s. So, more than most, the song's position in the context of the album lends it a lot of extra meaning. It's not necessary in order to appreciate the song, of course, but it's a nice bonus.

    The two tracks you've done of the Pumpkins are both from one of their more artsy, florid albums. Check out some stuff from their first album, Gish, and their second, Siamese Dream. They are a '90s band that creatively mixes artsy alternative with the kind of heavy classic rock that I think Jay likes better. And there's more of the heavy rock vibe in their earlier albums.

    Amber, if you like the look of this, there's so much more to it worth checking out, the inspirations & adaptations, whether reacted to or viewed on your own.
    The video takes inspiration from French filmmaker Georges Méliès "La Voyage Dans La Lune (A Trip To The Moon)", an adaptation of Jules Verne's novels "From The Earth To The Moon" & "Around The Moon".
    Melies is also portrayed as a lead character in a film you definitely should see, Martin Scorcese's 2011 film "Hugo", an adaptation of children's historical fiction novel "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" by Brian Selznick.

    Ah, that bygone era when the music video was often a big piece of the puzzle when it came to experiencing the song, and when an album was meant to be taken as a whole. Just like you wouldn’t read one random chapter of a book and expect to “get it” and love it, there are some songs we love because they are a beautiful piece of the puzzle.

    Poor Jay, we've thrown him in the deep end introducing Smashing Pumpkins through "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" 😂 I feel like we need to dial it back a bit and introduce him to some songs from the previous albums, "Siamese Dream" and "Gish", which I reckon he'd love. In fact when you get a chance, listen to the entirety of the "Siamese Dream" album. Songs I'd highly recommend "Cherub Rock", "Rocket", "Today", "Geek USA", "Rhinoceros", "I Am One", and "Siva". Also "Slunk" from the "Lull" EP.

    This used to be my favorite band and this used to be my favorite song by them. They are from Chicago and the orchestra on this song is the Chicago Symphony. I’ve seen then twice in Chicago and when Billy sings the lyric “And the embers never fade, in your city by the lake, the place where you were born” everyone goes wild. Billy has said the song is about his life growing up, with a lot of moving around, uncertainty, and unfortunately physical and emotional abuse and neglect. As others have mentioned this album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, was one of the best albums of the 90s. Billy Corgan’s voice, while distinctly Smashing Pumpkins, isn’t for everyone though. He’s very gifted musically (and an underrated guitar player, imo) but even he says his voice isn’t his forte.
    This video won a Grammy back in 1996 I believe. Stylistically, it is very much late-90s. I think this style, with the vintage feel and dark celestial themes is called “whimsigoth” nowadays. I don’t know, but I was ALL about it back in the day and still kinda am. I feel like the best way to describe the style is very Stevie Nicks meets grunge-we were like the hippie chicks of the 90s. Like Phoebe from friends.
    I was pretty sure Jay wouldn’t like this song but think Jay would enjoy “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” or “Siva,” and Amber would enjoy “Disarm.” I also think maybeeee the 90s overall aren’t Jay’s decade, musically. Which is okay lol… it took me years to get into a lot of 70s music, and I think the 90s are to you guys what the 70s were to me.

    Stoner rock, shoegaze, doom metal, psychedelic, avant-garde, electronics, Pumpkins have done everything. To me ‘95-‘96 is when they really came into their own in terms of really cementing their own sound, Billy is a great poet and a guitar virtuoso, Jimmy Chamberlain is the reason I ever picked up a pair of drum sticks, James Iha helped shaped the mood and tone and wrote some great songs himself, D’arcy definitely added her own flourishes as well
