I told my friends/co-workers that "I Write Sins, Not Tragedies" by Panic At the Disco is one of the best white boy songs I've ever heard. Now they're sending me song suggestions and I'm doing live reactions here, on the Trying White Music series lmao Развлечения
Comedian you’re thinking of is Bill Burr 😂
DUDE!!!
@@HollywoodRobTV I had never made the connection but when you pointed it out it clicked IMMEDIATELY lol
Took me a second, then same thought.
@@HollywoodRobTV The music video is based off of Georges Méliès' 1902 silent film, A Trip to the Moon.
Also, Cherub Rock and Bullet with Butterfly Wings by Smashing Pumpkins are both more high energy songs, if you're interested.
“Why does this song sound like a date in high school?” Dude, Smashing Pumpkins sound is like… weaponize nostalgia.
More like middle school for me, but yeah, I felt so called out.
Vague dreams and moments about to happen...that's the sound of Smashing Pumpkins.
Remember 1979 was specifically engineered by Billy to invoke nostalgia that may have not been there. A lot of us heard MCATIS was in jr high, or high school.
@@airborneandrowdy And god damn if he didn't nail it...
1979
You want that summer night nostalgia vibe you should check out their song "1979"
that song will forever be in my top 5 - being born in 79 might have something to do with it
This is my vote for the next smashing pumpkins song.
1979 is iconic. I would watch that reaction.
@@andreas.5910Legitimately probably their best song, and that's a high bar.
1979 is such a goddamn bop.
Smashing Pumpkins will go down as one of the best bands ever to walk this planet.. their vast and diverse catalog can stand with anyone’s in the history of music
Yeah I don’t think they are appreciated enough for their diversity of styles. They took risks that a band that popular really didn’t need to. People write off the melancholy album as a few good songs with a lot of filler, but if you give that album a chance, it’s super creative and diverse, and executed so well.
Today, Cherub Rock, Mayonaisse, 1979, Zero, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Muzzle, Ava Adore, Perfect...just to name a few
33
No love for Disarm??
Stand inside your love and rhinoceros are my personal favourites
The better version of Landslide too 👀
It makes me sad that we have to tell them the songs.
Rob said "like a high school crush on a field trip" ! .... that's an incredible emotional comparison.
Smashing Pumpkins 1979 seems up your alley. Truly that nostalgia high school date feel you were talking about with this one
Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet with Butterfly Wings 🔥🔥🔥
Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet with Butterfly Wings! 🤘
absolutely, this HAS to get a react from Rob!
i agree, then zero
Worst song they ever recorded and the beginning of the end.
You can go this route if you want their most mainstream hits but musically they are among their weakest two IMO.
One of the best bands ever.. this entire album is fantastic.
The fact that they're not in the Rock n Roll HOF yet is CRIMINAL!!
Mellon Collie basically lived in my discman in my senior year of high school. Glad to see you're more into this one than some of the other albums I had in the rotation back then. 😉
The whole music video is a reference to the French silent movie from 1902 called 'A Trip to the Moon'
yes, one of the first films to feature special effects
Was hoping someone had said it. "Le Voyage Dans la Lune", one of the first and most influential films ever made. Not only did it effectively give birth to the sci-fi and fantasy film genres, but it was essentially the catalyst for cinematic storytelling as we know it. Cinema as we know it might not exist without this movie. Not to mention Méliè's special effects and editing were like Matrix/Avatar-level groundbreaking at the time.
All Smashing pumpkins songs will blow your mind. Siemens Dream album is perfection.
Siemens Dream? Siamese Dream was indeed an absolutely fantastic album.
@@shifty7629 oops Siamese 😬
First three albums are great. Dropped off hard though.
Hummer is an underrated banger
Smashing pumpkins was such an essential band for the skate scene music. Love them
Really? That's interesting to know. I was never in the skate scene but I had skater friends and they loved Smashing Pumpkins in the 90s, as I did too. But I didn't think it was in the culture.. I thought it was cool happenstance..
Smashing Pumpkins were mid-late 90s, post-grunge era. They were a big influence to the style of bands like My Chemical Romance & Fall Out Boy, who were the next decade.
MCR/Gerard Way especially calls them out as their biggest influence along with The Misfits
*early 90s. Along side grung acts
I was listening to Smashing Pumpkins before Nirvana hit it big in 1991. I’m not saying that as a brag. Just a timeline comment. SP and grunge hit big simultaneously.
They formed in the late 80s. First full album was 91. 91 was a weird year in music.
Smashing Pumpkins ain't post-grunge. They were making music since the start of the grunge movement in 1991. They are simply alternative rock.
It's funny you say sounds like MCR, the guys in MCR decided they wanted to be professional musicians after attending a SP concert lol
No disrespect to MCR I respect them, but Pumpkins are so much more creative and legendary than that little band
@@nebulous8389You didn’t have to say “little”
@@ligairi imo they are little compared to the pumpkins but that's just my opinion
@@nebulous8389 lol
"the more you change...the less you feel" poetic brother 🙏
Smashing Pumpkins were Midwest too, straight out of Chicago if i recall correctly. They were pretty genre defining for their time.
Yep, they’re from Chicago, Billy Corgan still lives there.
Billy is a musical genius! Smashing Pumpkins forever!
Interesting fact, the song Angel by Sarah McLachlan (sad dog ASPCA commercial song) was written about Jonathan Melvoin, who was a musician that died of a heroin overdose while he was touring with the Smashing Pumpkins.
I'm 40 now but this is hands down my favorite band, at least for when I was growing up. This band perfectly captures the angst that the youth of the nineties were wading through. Really love these guys. A truly awesome and deep catalog of music to choose from. Hope you check out more
This is honestly one of my favorite songs of all-time.
Quick story, this band is from Chicago. I think it was 2012, an alternative rock station in Chicago called Q101 went off the air after 25+ years and this was the last song they played before going off the air. Q101 eventually came back a couple years later after the format they replaced it with failed miserably, but it was pretty sentimental at the time.
Smashing Pumpkins came out with a single on a compilation album in 1989 called “I am One” and their first album Gish was released in 1991- a great album by the way which also features the single “I am one”, the album is harder than the song you just reacted to and features a lot guitar centric music with great rhythms.
Billy Corgan used to look like a young Uncle Fester. Now he just look like Fester.
You should watch 1979 by SP if you want high school vibes. I was born in ‘79, graduated in ‘97 so that song is especially special to me
Man Smashing Pumpkins now? Gotta do Rhinoceros by them.
Rhinoceros and Geek USA are my favorites
I tend to like the heavier Pumpkins songs. Favorites are Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Zero, and Everlasting Gaze
And most of the Siamese Dream album!
Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins is amazing, and even more amazing when you understand the meaning.
One of the best reaction channels on YT my opinion
Oh hell yes. Another fantastic journey. Gotta check out the song “Mayonnaise”.
I’ve got an heavily themed SP channel but one of my favorite time killers is watching folks that have no prior exposure to the Pumpkins listen for the first time. Especially, those who 90’s rock is out of their typical listening genre. It is such a pleasure watching minds get blown, melted, amazed… and seeing a new Pumpkins fan be born.
Also, unrelated but it’s so annoying when people get mad when you react in a reaction video. People comment ‘you stop too much’ etc on my vids and I’m like… wtf do you think this video is?
So glad you liked this one so much! SP is one of my favorite bands from the '90s, and I have so many memories tied to their early music. They've also got a lot of harder songs, too, and all kinds of stuff in between. IMO, Adore, their 4th album, was their last good one, but I'm sure there are folks who love their later stuff, too, and I got nothing against them.
Siamese dreams is still one of my favorite albums. I made fun of my friend when he showed their first video on MTV. Then he bought Siamese dreams and we listened to the whole album while playing Mortal Kombat on Sega. Finally had to admit they were really good.
Now Rob should react to Bullet with Butterfly wings by them!
You can’t go wrong with some Smashing Pumpkins. Excellent band.
I’d love to see you check out Cherub Rock - hard to pick just one, but Siamese Dream is the first CD I ever bought with my own money. Starting there won’t send you wrong.
Lotta bangers from Smashing Pumpkins. Two of my favorites are Zero and Mayonaise, pretty different but both great songs. Give those a listen if you go down this rabbit hole
Speaking of songs with "vibes" 🎧
The Postal Service:
• The District Sleeps Alone Tonight
• Brand New Colony
• Be Still My Heart
• Such Great Heights
Gregory Alan Isakov:
• Big Black Car
Or MAE, if people still remember them. Embers and Envelopes!
Such great heights is one of my favorite songs ever!
Glad you liked it, Hollywood. The Pumpkins have always been one of my favorite bands. If you want ROCKER that was also a pretty big hit, check out “Cherub Rock” off of Siamese Dream. Billy Corgan is a SHREDDER!
Iconic song, iconic video. Great one to check out. Tonight, Tonight is such a powerhouse of melodic instrumentals and catchy lyrics. And the video is such a fuckin trip.
You need to check out the songs Mayonnaise and Cherub Rock. Great songs.
Edit: The guy on the spaceship is Tom Kenny aka Spongebob
Soon as you said, “Fool!” I hit the like button!😂
Yeah, to your point about MCR and The Pumpkins: I see where you're getting that from, I think Pumpkins are a bit more "epic" or "grand" (think those big sweeping sounds with the stringed instruments) in their sound in this particular song but I totally get what you're hearing.
Watching you branch out in your tastes in music is inspirational. Always great to see someone discovering new things that they enjoy.
This is the progenitor of MCR and Panic! at the Disco. This is '90s Alternative. This grew out of Nirvana's Grunge phase.
I was holding my breath waiting for your reaction---I'm so relieved!!
always in my heart! Smashing Pumpkins forever!
nostalgia is what you're thinking of Rob, and that nostalgic feeling is a big thing in a lot of Smashing Pumpkins songs, definitely a great part of their sound. hoping you eventually do more Coheed songs as well!
So glad you checked out Smashing pumpkins.
I initially found your challenge when you did your first RATM reaction. It was awesome (still hoping you'll do a Renegades of Funk reaction by RATM:))
If you like the chill vibes of this song I would like to also suggest you check out '1979,' 'today,' or 'perfect.'
Also, if you like this general genre I highly recommend 'Where is My Mind' by the pixies. It's a classic early 1990s song that influenced the sound of many other 90s bands.
Keep up the great work, and thanks for the enjoyable content.
Mayonnaise by Smashing Pumpkins, Eye, Zero, Everlasting Gaze, Cherub Rock, Stand Inside Your Love, and Today. All amazing. So many more great ones, too.
I've been a lifelong fan of the Pumpkins but was only able to see them for the first time earlier this year and I cried when they played this song. I still get the chills!
The music video is a reference to the silent film A Trip to the Moon by George Melíes, early 1900s France. Also, summer nights is definitely the vibe of this song.
Also I was the 666th like?
I feel like you would love 1979 by Smashing Pumpkins. I used to be a huge fan of theirs back in the day.
Literally so heartwarming to see the love for smashing pumpkins here, especially with their most modern emo themed song, honestly thought rob would start with butterfly wings
Great react man! Smashing Pumpkins was 10-15 years before Panic and MCR
Check out "Eye" & "Ava Adore".
Yes to these! ^^
This track is one of their most chill, mellow tunes
Tons of Smashing Pumpkins tunes are *much* heavier and definitely head bangers. Worth checking out -
Cherub Rock
Quiet
Today
Hummer
Bullet with Butterfly Wings
Siva
Good stuff! Really enjoyed this reaction. :)
You have to listen to “Bullet with butterfly wings”, but after that, “Disarm” is disarming and in my opinion their most emotive track. 1979 is also epic in a pop-rock way
Just found your channel cause your RATM react was on my recommended feed and if the best react video I’ve ever seen. 😂 Checked the rest of the channel and here you are reacting to who’s been my favorite band since 1996. 😎
(Also, I’m sure you’ve been told by now, but this came out WAY before MCR, etc. Those guys were teens when this came out.)
My favorite smashing pumpkins song. Musically it’s a masterpiece!
One of the best concerts I've ever been too! Brought me back to my teenage years. Love them!!
I love your channel man and I love this song, it’s funny I have listened to rage for a long time but you showed me rodeo
I know that’s random
This is actually cool as heck lol
Dude, hell yeah Rob! Smashing Pumpkins are one of my all-time favorite bands! You love that heavy shit though… You should check out bullet with butterfly wings next 🤘
Next track on that same album "Jellybelly" has a sick guitar riff and is a much different sound.
"Bullet with Butterfly Wings" is also from the same album and was a huge hit. Absolute opposite of "Tonight, Tonight"
Great reaction to an absolute high school classic! You might also like I prevail and their song one more time, that’s got a decent vibe of its own and a catchy as hell chorus. Keep doing what you’re doing man, lovin’ your positivity and energy 🤘🏻
Love this! Smashing Pumpkins were one of my favorites in high school. I would LOVE to see your reaction to Mayonnaise (my favorite song by them), or anything off of the album Siamese Dream really.
Yes, a classic song. One of their bests go Smashing Pumpkins.
You nailed it when you said it feels like a date in high-school. Modern reviewers say the Pumpkins music, in the 90s, was merciful with teenagers (the word they use is not merciful, but I can't find it in my head, it's a word that means the opposite to selfish and slef-centered). They say the Pumpkins didn't make the music they wanted to do, per se, but the music they knew kids needed. And I think it's true! When I was 16 in 1996, they were gods to me. Those old albums are very cringe today, they don't talk to me any more. But I'm 44, not 16 now. By the way, in the mid 90s, there were considered grunge, but that was just a commercial label to sell albums, when actually their music takes from many sources of pop music: all the 90s alternative rock, 80s goth rock and hardcore, power ballad, new romantic, and so on.
Others songs to react to: Here is no Why, Thirty-Three, 1979, and Zero (although it's a plagiarism of Christian Death's song Deathwish. The lyrics of Here is No Why even talk about deathrock boys, which Christian Death fans were called)
My guy, I'm old, so hearing people ask if this is in the same era as MCR is wild. I bought this album as a teenager when it came out, and I still listen to it regularly. There's a decade separating SP and MCR in their peak, with Smashing Pumpkins preceding and inspiring that entire genre. If you want the emo groundbreakers, listen to The Cure.
fun fact about Tonight, Tonight the entire music video is an homage to a real film from back in the old days of film called, A Trip to the Moon by Georges Méliès.
"Bullet with butterfly wings" is you're jam. Seriously (I saw the joy from your heart to your smile, nice one Rob)
"Bullet With Butterfly Wings" will always be my favorite Pumpkins song. I prefer their harder and edgier songs.
HAHA This is perfect that you had a date in highschool comment. Came out around them times brotha hell yeah!
Always love love the Pumpkins.
Smashing Pumkpins does some hype too. Try Zero or Bullet with Butterfly Wings for your gains playlist.
I was a teenager in high school when this album came out. You nailed it!
We need to get this man on some Nine Inch Nails, like some Head Like a Hole, Wish, or We're In This Together
Absolutely killer album!
my mom's friend recorded this CD (double CD) onto a cassette tape for me when I was 8 year old I used to listen to it on the walkman constantly
MCR was next gen. Smashing Pumpkins were a 90s band and actually released an album last year (2023) disbanded in 2000 and returned in 2006. One of my favorites. You should do some 311 next!
Forgot how much this song is a masterclass in snare work.
I've always thought that Hip Hop and Metal should be the two sides of the same coin, for both are intense, have powerful messages and are really energetic.
Congratulations for your channel, Rob.
Cheers from Uruguay, South America 🇺🇾🎧✌️🙏🥃
Fuckin love this song
Totally summer night date, strawberry wine on a picnic, first love vibes! Lol, and that was me when they came out entering HS. I loved the Smashing Pumpkins. I feel like their star also faded too fast. Like they were here one day & then gone!
Smashing Pumpkins Landslide is nice.
Wow right in the feels. One of the key tracks from HS.
Tonight tonight, 1979, Zero, and Stand inside your love are my favorites.
it cool you are getting deeper into the 90's specifically. Seems you found one of your preferred vibes
The Wallflowers-one headlight
Collective Soul- heavy (and more)
Placebo-every me every you
The Offspring- you're going to go fare kid (and more) self esteem, kids arent fine,
Bush-Machine Head
Sponge-Plowed
Blur-song 2
New Radicals- get what you give
GooGoo Dolls-Slide
Matchbox 20-3AM
Filter-hey man, nice shot
There's not a bad recommendation on this thread. I can listen to Mellon Collie straight through and never get bored. It was a two disc set back in the day.
Nickelback had this incredible song called Photograph, best rock song of the decade, maybe the century.
Having watched most videos in this series, I'd have to claim your tastes in rock music seem to gravitate toward melodic emo poetry with heavy guitar tones. And I thoroughly approve.
Motionless in white- voices or another life. Great songs
Definitely need to check out bullet with butterfly wings. Zero and Tarantula are a few you would like too.
The song '1979' takes that nostalgia feeling to 11
The music video is based on the 1902 movie A Trip to the Moon which was one of the most influential movies of all time bc of the spectacle and early use of color
Im glad you found them. They are dope.
Listen to Cleaners from Venus.
This is the song I walked down the aisle to when I got married.
That is SUPER cool
@@HollywoodRobTV thank you!
dude, sp been around forever, one of my biggest influences as a teen and a musician back in the 90s. they're super diverse and there's no way to really get a beat on them until you've heard at least 10 songs. it would be interesting to see you react to the very next song on that album, 'jelly belly'. they take you from this song straight into an in your face blistering rock song. there's just so much, a wide variety.
and, if you're into emo, you should react to 'sunny day real estate'. they're like OG emo imo.
Check out a band called Hum. "Stars" is mostly likely the only thing most have heard from them but "The Pod," "Dreamboat," and even "Step into You," from their most recent album are good places to start
One of the 90s greats.
Tonight Tonight was my prom theme song back in 98! SP is right up your alley with the white boy emo stuff😂
Smashing Pumpkins is my all time favorite band. Great to see other Black people discover them! They have incredible range. I would recommend Bullet with Butterfly Wings for the next react video, though you would also like Zero, Cherub Rock, and probably 1979.
