Billy Corgan is a Genius of a Musician. The Band Has 2 of my all time Favorite Albums, "Siamese Dream" and "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness". Both are packed with hit after hit, I think that the Infinite Album should be listened to from start to finish without stop!
Before I met Tool, Smashing Pumpkins were my #1 band. This album was so cool and epic because of its ambition. It was a two disk CD set. I believe it came out in 1995. There is not a bad track on it, and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was played at the opening of the World Series in New York in 2001, after 9/11 happened. As a Pumpkins fan, that touched my heart so much. Please check that song out. It's an instrumental, but so, so beautiful. Edit: Smashing Pumpkins are difficult to categorize. Maybe alternative rock? Experimental? They are all over the board. Their albums Gish and Pices Iscariot are amazing. Then there's their breakthrough album, Siamese Dream. Further edit: James Iha, the lead guitarist for the Pumpkins, is a member of a Perfect Circle with Maynard James Keenan (Tool, Puscifer).
This is what I walked down the aisle to when I married my husband ❤ The video is based on what is widely considered to be the first sci-fi movie ever made (A Trip to the Moon, 1902). It is still a beautiful film in terms of art, but made even more incredible when you really consider how limited filmmakers were with special effects at that time.
I’ve heard more that it’s considered to be the first fantasy film, rather than sci fi, as Edison had filmed an adaptation of Frankenstein before this. It’s hard to say. I’ll say this, though. Voyage dans la Lune is so very far superior to Frankenstein. It might be an unfair comparison, since film was brand new when Edison did Frankenstein, and it did have an innovative special effect for Frankenstein’s creation, where they burned a dummy and played it in reverse. But Méliès pressed the NOS and blew past him.
This album shaped my entire adolescence. When they first released this video, MTV played it literally every 5 videos and you better believe I was sitting there counting down the videos, so I could watch it again, and again. The music video is actually based on a really old victorian film. It's almost identical at times. The Smashing Pumpkins have been my favorite band since I was a child in 93. This album will always be my favorite album of all time. The only album that has even come close to having the same impact on me is OK Computer by Radiohead.

"Childlike sense of adventure...belief in yourself." I think you just summarised one of the most central parts of Billy Corgan's lyrics. Sort of the loss of innocence of youth as we become older and more cynical. I think the first time I heard this was probably seeing this video on MTV. It didn't click with me right away as I was too distracted by the goofy video to really get into the music, but got this album on double-disc CD not long after and it has remained one of my favorites ever since.
Seriously, listen to their radio releases later. Their most amazing songs are within their albums..those are what sold me on the smashing pumpkins. I’ve been lucky enough to see these guys live twice in the past six Mos. This sounds just as amazing if not more LiVe .. I first saw them live n the late 80’s. The powerful driving guitar& drums is addicting AF

They've got one of the best drummers alive today (Jimmy Chamberlin) and the band would not be the same without him. Mellon Collie is the best double album ever, imo.

When I was a teen I had a cd with sad songs I would listen to whenever I was sad, just to really dig in that sadness (as teens do) and smashing pumpkins and radiohead were almost a third of that cd. Of course this one was there. And the video is still one of my favorite videos ever made. Edit: I've watched a little further into the reaction, I'm at the point where you say "i guess you gotta listen to the lyrics and then correlate it to the video". Sometimes videos correlate to the lyrics and sometimes the band has a cool idea for a video which doesn't necessarily makes sense with the song. As much as I love this video the way the visuals make me feel are totally different from the way the song makes me feel, but I can appreciate both because I knew the song before watching the video. I got to hear the song first without the distraction of the video.
This song and album were a really odd vibe for the era they came out in which is why I think its as popular as it is. There were weird choices being made in the 1990's

Dating a woman i loved very much who changed herself constantly and she seemed to feel less love as time went on. As i stayed the same she grew further away. Its definately a thing with certain people and if they cant get you to change who you are, they get more angry and disagreeable to the point of rage. Its tough but be yourself and feel safe in that knowledge of self. Some people get off on altering the path of others and the people that get mean about it dont have any idea what success or love is.
I feel like this video and the Metropolis scenes from the Queen video Radio Gaga have some likenesses-Wonder if that video inspired The Smashing Pumpkins for this.
