      The drums is the standout instrument. It took Tony 5 months, yes 5 months to write, play and perfect the drum pattern. I read that somewhere.

      Yeah this track almost didn’t make the album because of the difficulty Tomas had playing this on the drums. The hands are easy, but the feet are playing a herta (drum rudiment - RLR L RLR L) pattern that is near impossible to play at this speed to line up correctly with the guitar riff. Maybe not as many dynamics here as in other difficult to play songs, but the syncopation of the kick drums and guitar for 7+ minutes makes this a technical masterpiece.

      6:28 - The snare and cymbal are a slow beat - - listen to the double kick drumming!!!! It is LITERALLY as fast and in perfect sync with the fast guitar riff!!! lol Eventually, you will catch onto the hook my man!

      @@heavenstibetsee5716 Thats what Ive always viewed as the problem with this video - the footage focusing on his hands, which dont do Anything most of the time, except keep time, and that there isnt a Constant corner screen of his feet. Most people hear and/or have been told that he plays with his feet the same pattern, but I doubt they can understand even Half of how difficult it is without a constant visual, or like in this instance - understand whats going on at all.

    his foot patterns are the most impressive thing going on here, and his focus to stay on pattern. Probably not visually impressive with speed and fills, but ultra complicated and a I'm sure a workhorse is required to play this.

      Exactly. If you listen closely, his feet are following the guitar. It might help if you hear the guitar by themselves so you understand what you're listening for. There's a video out there of the guitarists alone playing this song for one of the guitar or amp companies. I don't think I can even keep that pattern going for the whole song with my hands!

      Troy Lundrigan yeah everything else is basic in fact its still in standard time signature but what he is doing with the kicks really puts you off because it sounds off but really timing is standard but what he is adding in that time is mental and very complex.

    His feet playing the double bass rhythms is the hardest and most technical part of this entire song of any of the instruments. Don’t be fooled by the pace of his hands ie; that the drummer is playing slow. He most definitely is not and never is.

    There's an interview with Tomas and he says the song (Bleed) almost didn't make it to the record. It took him something like six months to learn how to play it.

    The drum kick is following the guitar riff while the cymbals and snare are in 4/4 mostly throughout the entire song. The song is basically one long polymeter (not polyrhythm.)

    I have played drums for over 20 years and this isnt easily played. He is playing one time with his arms and different on his feet . (Huertas)

      Martinezjoe74 kind of but not really though, he’s doing something like 23/16 on the feet and 4/4 throughout with his hands. The 4/4 continues to stay on time with his feet, so it’s really just keeping that crazy bass drum pattern straight throughout the song. Adding the hands doesn’t add much difficulty but I can tell you that bass drum pattern is tough

    The drum cam of “clockworks” on the play through is insane. If you want to see him do more upper body shit. This track is virtually all kick patterns... It took Tomas like 6 months to learn this track...

      Personally, I also view Clockworks as a a much better track than Bleed, despite the fact that its still a metal classic by this point.

    Thomas Haake just chillin and laying some grooves... look how relaxed he is, and how smooth he plays. The difficultlevel on the drumming he is doing here is of the charts. One of the greatest metal drummers of all time, alongside Danny Carey and Mario Duplantier...

    What is going on here, especially in the intro, is a herta polyrhythm. The herta is the bass drum pattern consisting of 3 quick hits followed by one slightly delayed hit, on a constant loop. What makes it a polyrhythm is the fact that his hands are playing in a different time signature. So the hands are playing 4/4, meaning that you can count the high hat hits as 1, 2, 3, 4, and repeat. On the feet however, the pattern doesn't finish exactly at 4 like the hands do, it sort of finishes at 5 (I can't read sheet music so I don't know it this is technically how you would define it, but I can play it, and this is the easiest way I can explain it.)
    What happens then is that the hands loop back to 1 right after 4, but the feet keep going for another beat, so 1 on the feet becomes 2 on the hands. And after one more loop, 1 on the feet becomes 3 on the hands, and so on. Like this:
    Hands: 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4
    Feet:: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
    So here you see how the hands and feet line up at the start, but then shift as he is playing. A good way to see this is the placement of the snare drum hits. He hits he snare on hand 3, but depending on where in the rhythm he is, that could be anywhere in the bass drum pattern. What we also see here is that because the hand rhythm has to be played 5 times and the feet 4 times before they line up again, the total count is 20.
    Hope this made any kind of sense.

      @@TegaraMusic Depends on how you approach it. I've studied some music theory and I personally understand and memorize their music best by seeing each riff for what it is, in other words, when it starts over, that "round" ends, regardless of where it falls in the 4/4 around it. Pretty sure that approach would technically make it polymetric, because most of their songs feature either something like a steady 23/16 over 4/4 until they meet up on a 1, or a bunch of different time signatures after each other over 4/4. However, I've heard from people who most likely have a lot more knowledge in music theory that Meshuggah's music is neither polymetric nor polyrhythmic, but what they do would rather be called "rhythmic displacement".

      @@TegaraMusic Exactly, call it what you want, as long as you enjoy the music, and if needed, understand it your way so you can play it or whatever if that's what you're aiming to do. I guess if you're working with other musicians you need to come to some agreement about how to name things and communicate them to make things work, and that's where terminology could get a bit more important.

    Great observation that the guitar riff is fast and a lot of what Tomas plays with his hands is slow... Now consider that what he's playing with his feet is essentially the guitar rhythm (speed) and in a different time signature...

    That "guitar riff" you loved so much in the first video which you said went on throughout the song is the drummers kick drum. Absolute monster

    4:48 the hardest part is keeping those feet moving in that blasphemous 'hertas' rhythm (same as the guitar riff) while playing a simple 4/4 on top of it with his hands. It's sooooper difficult.

      @@PowerfulWarbird I was just correcting what he said in the video at that point of time dude! Obviously as the song further progresses it becomes even nastier to play. I have been listening to meshuggah since last 3 years and bleed is my favourite song from them. The whole fkn piece is difficult to play. The intro or the main riff might be 'relatively easier' but the whole song is just straight up filth.

      @@stuartrae4612 Yep i saw this video:) but I herad about this band first time around 2010, my friend was crazy about them and showed me their single, and after Exercises in futility album in 2015 they are my favourite Black metal band:) they definitely deserve more recognition!

      @@stuartrae4612 you can definitely check Myrkur - Ulvinde this is BM with female voclas, very unique! and if you like this song check their albums they mixing Nordic folk music with BM. Second suggestion, this is more heavy stuff, Batushka - "Litourgiya" and "Panihida" albums this is unique blend of Eastern Orthodox Church choir music and BM.

      That's the video's problem IMO. Lots of people recommend this video to showcase his drumming but it spends 80% of the time not looking at his feet. That's where all the action is.

    Same as JKB and Jonathan Petrucelli said, he's following the guitar rhythm with his feet but keeping a straight 4/4 beat with his hands.
    Also want to mention the whole song is in 4/4, and everything is the same tempo. If they were playing different tempos from eachother that would be a problem haha. Live your vids man keep em comin' 👌

    He is keeping a whole different rhythm with his feet on the kick drums than he is keeping with his hands on the drums and cymbals. It’s like juggling, patting your head, and rubbing your belly all at the same time while riding a unicycle.

    Im a bare foot drummer, i personally just have better "feel" for what my pedals is doing under my feet
    Edit: My advice would be to follow the cymbals not the kick. For the most part any how.

    There is video online where he’s saying, that he had to learn a new style of drumming to be able to play this song. It took him as long to record this song as it took to record the rest of the album.

    Here's the good thing about polyrhythms. You can have multiple people headbanging at a different tempo and they're all correct. Usually follow the bass drum, but I tend to follow more of a 3/3 - 4/3 tempo with Bleed. Great reaction.

    Hi Drew Ive really enjoyed seeing your 'outside' perspective. You are very open minded compared to a lot of other people in Dublin. You are dead right about Tomas' hands being slow in this song. Meshuggah are known as masters of polyrythm or "rythms within rythms" as you can hear he is playiung along with the guitar with his feet but laying a flat 4 with his hands.

    So basically, the role of the drummer in a band is to keep time, so the rest of the band plays to the drummer.
    Except a lot of bands use a metronome in their monitors to keep the beat, which is how meshuggah plays their songs perfectly live.

    I think the guitar riff you're talking about is actually Tomas Haake kick drumming. Haake is playing two different time signatures. His feet are on one time signature and his drumming is on another. This is the reason why people were asking you to react to the drum cam

    What you're experiencing with the whole head wanting nod at 2 different speeds is polyrhythms between the drums and the guitars. They're basically playing 2 different songs. Meshuggah are kings of this style and it's the backbone of most of their music. You did a good job of trying to understand it, people who study music struggle with it lol

    In an interview Thoma Haake mentioned, that this track was difficult to play, as he is not leaning into the base drums but is playing them more like a tap dance. I could imaging, that because of this interrupted rhythm being bare foot is helping him. But that's just a guess. Since you like drummer: check out the drummer Bard Kolstad from the Norwegian band: Leprous

    I've been playing drums for 21 years and I personally think it's more comfortable playing double bass without shoes but everyone is different. And Thomas is doubling the guitar riff in bleed so perfectly that from a non drummers perspective it might seem he's not doing much but his footwork on this track is insane

    Watching along to drum cam vids like this defo causes a new appreciation for the song, cos you get to see the action unfold and pick up on the nuances and things perhaps hidden upon initial hearings. Again, I personally am not a big fan as such of the lads in Meshuggah, but something like this song has so much going on, even though its initally hidden under a relentless barrage of machine gun precision and roaring fury. Id love toe see Thomas Haake and Danny Carey have a drum showdown together.
    Again mate, there is so much more under the umbrella of "Metal" as such, with tons of bands relying more on huge melodic sing a longs, rather than the vocals here, if they aint yer cupán tae. Looking forward to more reaction vids. Keeping tings as normal as we can during these times.

    This is one of the most difficult songs to learn on the drums because he’s playing two different Beats 1 with his hands and one with his feet so basically he’s playing two different drum beats with both sets of his limbs

    I heard about Meshuggah thru Mike Portnoy when he was still in Dream Theater. This is extremely clean, heavy, and technically superior.

    I'm gonna suggest you listen to either Clockworks or Dancers to a Discordant System with this band. Bleed is a slow burner that only takes effect once you understand the complexity of the bass drum from Haake. These two songs has a lot to offer from all the members of the band, rather than just focusing on Haake in Bleed.

    The guitar riff IS the drumkicks patter through most of the song, the whole song is composed around the drumkick pattern, and the drumkick tempo goes around a pattern of alternating triplets, and besides ALL of that, he is playing a 4/4 steady tempo with his hands! Two different tempos, like, two different songs at the same time. For a drummer to do that, that fast, and for so long, on point! its really, REALLY hard.
    Thomas himself took 6 months to learn the song after he wrote it.

    What makes it special is that on his hands he's doing a 4/4 and his feet are doing something like 12/8 hertas, like his upper and lower body are playing 2 different songs entirely, and he even mixes that up through out the song. Like an infinitely more intricate version of rubbing your belly and patting your head at the same and at different rates for 7 minutes

    I like drumming with socks because it gives me more control... what makes this song so impressive is the perfect synchro of guitar and drums... It's not like I can play this song but if I could I'd never be able to achieve such perfection...

    The drum cam for their song Clockworks is fucking insane as well. Much move hand movement in it where as this song is pretty much soley based around the pattern he's playing with his feet.

    He's doing two different time signatures at once. His feet are following one signature on the kicks and his hands are on a slower tempo. Not the most visually spectacular, but extremely difficult. They almost didn't do this song because he was struggling to learn to play it live.

    In this the guitar is being tremolo picked in the same pattern as the drum kick so you could follow either if that's what you're listening for. Your best bet for head banging is to listen to the cymbals generally. His feet are playing polyrhythms but at least one of his hands is usually in 4/4

    I'm only 5 minutes in so you may get this but the difficulty in the drumming is the timing signatures. Not only is what he is doing with his feet other worldly (the riff matches his bass drums) but he is virtually playing a different song with his hands.

    Been drumming more then 15 years, never wore shoes. Tried recently but did not feel right. It’s all bout comfort for a drummer. If your kit is set the way that suits you and your comfortable then you can perform at your peek

    He plays two strokes with one movement, that's the double stroke technique, this technique is also called the heel-toe technique. For this technique it is important to use movable shoes or, like him, no shoes. Because the first hit is played with the middle of the foot, the second hit with the tip of the foot and that with one movement.

    Tomas's bass blasts are in time with the guitar speed if you look closely, think standard drumming in reverse, so instead of using bass drums to determine tempo, use snare and high hat/symbol beats..that's the fun part xD

    The hardest part of this track to me is that the guitar riff shares the same figure as the kicks all the song while his hands carry the groove. Them doing that, keeping it so tight, is the kind of things that I love about this band. Also, the "no-shoes" thing is absolutely personal preference. Tomas Haake is very specific about his setup and the way he plays. Notice how he only wears a glove in one hand, for example. I'm kind of a geek, sorry 😓

    The main chugging "guitar" riff you hear in Bleed, is actually mainly the bass guitar.

    whats going on early is his hands are playing a straight 4/4 beat, and his feet are following the guitar exactly, which is a 3/8 feel. so despite his hands being straight forward and simple they kind of accent off-sync with the riff and only sync up every 3 bars.

    the hard part is indeed he's going slow with his arms, but going mental with the feet. Focus on the ambidextrous limbs and you'll start appreciating it a whole lot more :)

    There a few reasons why people play witout shoes, most of it is down to shifting a bit of weight to make your feet more responsive. but it is also for grip if they are using the swivel foot technique
    other people play with big massive boots on and prefer the additional weight too (Inferno from behemoth)

    Fun fact, it took Haake 6 months to actually be able to play this live since he had to re-learn a completely new way of playing drums,. My guess is that the singer, Jens, wrote the drums in MIDI and they worked sooo good so they had no choice offering 6 months lol.

    the trick to Djent & Meshuggah type music, in terms of finding the beat is to focus on what he's doing with his right hand. it's rhythmically complex and there's a lot going on there but for the most part it's in 4/4 with a nice regular beat.

    I think it's customary to remove your shoes when you play drums, I usually remove my socks as well. Just don't miss and hook your toe on the spring of the base petal. I only did that once 15 years ago

    playing with shoes depends on what technique you use. When I played, I liked to put my toes on the heel area of the pedal and let the pulley momentum do the work for me. But if you use that technique, the beater will fly back much further and strike your foot, which hurts like hell.

    The main thing about this song is that the chugging you hear on the guitar throughout the duration of the song, is following the double bass kick rhythm that Thomas is playing. Have another go and focus on the guitar riffs and double pedal, but let the main lead be the drums :D

    Doing reviews for the Drum cam to this song is sort of unfair because visually it doesn't look like much is happening. Drumming in a way is doing the "Pat your head and Rub your tummy" way of multi-tasking. To drum you have to be able to precisely hit beats with 4 different appendages in an order to keep the rhythm and the many things one can do when talented and skilled like faster tempos, polyrhythms, endurance, etc..
    To appreciate Tomas Haake's performance, you have to note what a drummer is normally supposed to do in a song. With his feet he's following along to the guitars, which is playing a pattern that is both significantly fast, constantly modifying throughout and tends to not be a simple rhythm to count along with anyway. While doing that, his hands are playing a slower tempo that is meant to help keep the band in time and give the audience an easy beat to catch with/head-beat to for listening purposes. All of that is being performed at the same time.
    Simultaneously, he's having to keep two very distinct patterns in his head that separate would not at all seem to even fit in the same time signature let alone work together, while doing it precisely enough to not lose tempo despite the fast one evolving into different forms of the faster/guitar pattern. For a grueling song with only a short respite 6+ minutes in.

    That chuggy riff you are banging your head to is his legs on the double bass, his legs are the 7 min riff. It’s called a polyrhythm - his hands are playing to a different count than his legs.

    "Look how slow hes going" Not taking notice at all over how fast, technical and consistent the bass is. Realise that those triplet patterns are EXTREMELY difficult to keep up for longer than a minute. This guy does it for pretty much the entire song without skipping a beat or looking tired. Effortless god-level speed.

    I drum without shoes or in socks or ugg boots or even shoes...Prefer in socks though, the big toe has a LOT more feel when in contact with the pedal for those special fast and complex double kick intricacies. Some kicks I do are literally with my big toe hovering in the air, not the ball of my foot, no heel anchoring and no heel down (but I do some of those as well), I do all styles of foot methods depending on what sound I am trying to do.

    As a former drummer (carpal tunnel) - I always had bare feet.... with shoes or socks I couldn't feel connected to the pedal.. same reason I can't play clarinet (yes, I do also play clarinet) with gloves... its connection to the instrument.
