This is the camera I've been waiting for. I once owned the BMPCC4K, and I fell in love with working with BRAW. The warm tone of BRAW is the most film like look I've ever seen from any mirrorless cameras. BM says that with compatible lenses, you can get autofocus. I like the screen on the side, which most high end cameras have. Of course, I can use an external monitor with it. Which I already have. For myself, I would get the EF mount, because you can get lenses at cheap prices. Being able to record to external SSDs is also fantastic. And the price is fantastic for what it offers.
I think eventually I would like to switch to PL lenses but for the time being I have L and EF glass. I saw it said auto focus on the spec page but I wasn't sure if that meant continues auto focus or essentially just a focus button? Maybe they're working on some kind of auto focus/face tracking, that would nice
@@thatcameranerd funny thing is that it’s my photo camera- great colors, and sharpness. But it’s good to know that when I start doing any serious video work, I don’t have to buy a whole other camera/setup.

Hello, Please excuse my rant in advance. 😅 1st the monitor is on the wrong side of the camera for a 1 AC to access. 2nd I to wish they could release a top mounted small 5” touch screen monitor power/data via USB-C. 3rd the side monitor is taking up Realestate that could have been home to a double xlr input, and internal NDs. The monitor is not needed where it is currently located. I would have rathered a larger version of the red Komodo’s top monitor than on the side. 4th Still not an ideal design for gimbal work due to a poorly designed monitor location for functionality. 5th I have been a BMD user since they introduced the BMCC 2.5k and love the company for what it represents but this box camera has been requested from loyal users ever since the BMPCC4k was delivered and after all of that time we are still not receiving 1 of the most requested features from BM users and that is a function monitor. Thanks
The Vericam (monitor on the side), Sony Venice (monitor on the side for settings), ALL Arri Alexa cameras minus the Alexa mini (monitors on the side for settings) Every single TV broadcast camera (monitor on the side for settings), Canon C700 monitor on the side). None of you wedding guys and RUclips content creators ever whined and bitched about those cameras. BMD give you whiny, complaining youtubers a box camera, y'all begged for ...for years, gives you all exactly what comes with every single major cinema camera in history (monitor on the side) and y'all freaking sobbing and whining like spoiled brats. It's pathetic. The camera is for guys shooting movies. If you're not shooting movies. The camera is not for you.
I think BM should make the mounts using interchangeable. That would kill all the confusion of which camera to get, because you could alway change it later on.
Lovely glass half full review. I’m a big fan of my BMPCC and I’m totally excited to upgrade. Thank you for reveling in all the exciting possibilities of this machine.
While the price is the main draw, what its missing is glaring. Those hyping it up without experiencing it on a paid shoot may find themselves regrettably coming back down to Earth. I believe DM will take the tempeture of this offering and use the feedback to create the Pyxes Pro that should have build in ND, shoot in ProRes, 14 stop range, 4K at 60 or even 120fps and 14 and maybe even 16 bit internal recording. With those upgrades, those hyping up the price of the Pyxis will also hype up a $4K to $5K price.
I wonder if they could create an app for your phone to be used as a viewfinder or if blackmagic will come out with a smaller monitor that runs all off one cable?
Fuji X-H2s record proxies alongside. - I will most definitely be grabbing a Pyxis in EF for the versatility and being able to convert EF to PL and so on.
@@thatcameranerd sorry im gonna drop 3 comments bc this is such a good video (on this camera) but I feel like so many people are so bummed that this camera doesnt have the NDs and the price is just like are y'all crazy its 3k. 1. Adding a monitor but conveniently forget the hinge to be able to flip out and twist the screen. 2. Gently asking $500 more for the same sensor with all the glory, warts and all. 3. Nicely rub salt on the wounds and nudging us to buy actual usable monitor. In my humble opinion, if they wont discontinue the OG BMCC FF 6K for couple of years into the future, I have no issues or qualms.
Flip out screen would have been nice. Maybe like the new URSA so you can fold it in on itself. NDs absolutely, I think maybe they left out because of the various mount options. Or maybe that will be in the Pyxis Pro…
Even if the 4" screen was a flip-out you would still want to use the larger and top-mounted 7" 12G-SDI external monitor. Professional filmmakers have been using external ND filters for years, it's not a big deal in a professional setting. Blackmagic already stated they did not add NDs because they wanted to keep the form factor as small and compact as possible. Professionals want SDI over HDMI for longer cables runs. Overall, the Pyxis is designed to meet the needs of a more professional box style camera system not an all-in-one-box camera.
People keep complaining about the side screen. But I shoot the Komodo and I hate having to manipulate the camera to change settings when it's up high or on a gimbal... I love the screen placement because I'm already using a monitor.
It's a nice design, but leaving e-mount off its lens list leaves me out. After the 'gear hypers' get their promos over, maybe we'll see the real pros/cons. Everyone now is touting it and know nothing about it in use.
If you go for the EVF with cards and batteries you are definitely looking at closer to 5k. Maybe some people already have some accessories they can use to keep the cost down
Sure if you avoid the many 3rd party options. It is a real issue for any "box" style cameras. @andynonimuss6298 a Komodo owner, that has other cans, I will say that you hand options but the only downside to my komodo was the cost of CFast cards as I prefer MQ and HQ output even though prores is an option for me. Realistically, unless you already have the black magic accessories you will need the basics as well. The eye piece they are marketing to new Pyxis users is half the price of the camera but it looks like a good option for them.
I don't know why people just take manufacturers at their word when it comes to dynamic range. Why? Just because they tell you "X" camera has this amount and this other camera has "X" amount of DR? It's bee shown over and over again that manufacturers exaggerate their dynamic range so that you will buy their product. Red is notorious for lying. Same thing for Canon and others.
