Hi Tom, I can relate to trying to learn things as you get older. I'm 56 years old and I've been wallowing in mediocrity on the guitar for almost 40 years. I never had that cool neighbor or cool kid in school that could play guitar and I could lean on to teach me. Thanks for being my cool "internet" neighbor. I've learned more and improved more just by watching this series. It's been invaluable not just in my playing but in my enjoyment with life. Thanks Uncle Larry!!

Same here too, David. I’m 66 and been hacking around with a guitar since I was about 14. I’ve had spells of serious practice and then not so much so, but Uncle Larry has sparked something that just won’t go out and it transcends guitar playing and music...if that makes sense. He’s by far my favorite uncle; I think so for a lot of others, too.

David Dohms yup finding an unexpected late bloom myself, as a shameless hack on the guitar, there's a fierce joy to be had in our middle years of discovering the player trapped inside us. Uncle Larry has become essential viewing in this house!

How we learn to play is by internalizing the guitar fingerboard. Most of the folks I know - have become students of their instruments - there is so much to learn just really internalizing the major scale!

The comment on memory is so very accurate, it impacts me badly at 35 after 4+ years of chronic pain from a spine injury, after the most recent surgery that didnt go as planned ive lost about 25% of my guitar ability and theory in the last few months, makes playing regularly even more important.
Accorging to my pain management specialist & psychologist its like accelerated aging of the short and long term areas of the brain.
On the upside im starting to forget how to give a fu*k and just have fun :P
Walk to your own rythm & keep playing that beautiful music man, its very inspiring :)

Every time I hear Danny Gatton's name I get teary eyed and say "What a god-damned shame". Such a great talent but he just couldn't cope with life. 49 is too early to go under ANY circumstances. If you ever feel like life is overwhelming and you don't know where to turn, PLEASE talk to somebody. Your family, your best friend, if you go to church talk to your pastor. Just talk things through with somebody. You may find a solution to what is bringing you down.

I’ve only been playing for a little over a year, but I love playing, and sometimes I pick up a ton from your lessons that I can use right away, and other times it’s like I absorb 1%, and everything else goes over my head or I’m not ready for it. Doesn’t matter: you show me what’s possible, and not to sound dramatic but it really is inspiring, no other word for it. You make this stuff accessible, and it’s always cool to listen to. Tom! Thanks so much for trying to explain what’s going on in your head when you play. I’ve been, in my opinion, a mediocre rock and blues guitarist for over 40 years. I’ve been bored with my playing for a long time. Last year, just before I found your channel, I decided to buy a book and learn some jazz fundamentals. One of the very first things covered was triads and inversions on every set of strings. The emphasis is on knowing the notes and knowing the intervals, everywhere. Things are starting to fall into place and I’m having fun again. Home Skoolin’s been a big part of that so, again, thank you.
By the way, I’ve watched every single video on your channel. Nice job on Jeff’s version of “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat”.

At 6:30 in the video. Thank you Tom! I am a late bloomer also and damn proud of it. Comments from guys like that used to make me feel like I could never "catch up" .... Then one day I realized music is not a competition it is simply a part of my life.

Having shared a country and a lot of culture and TV with Slovenes, I'd say it's probably Boo-koh-vahts in Slovenia. Also, there are Bukovac toponyms here in Serbia, where it's definitely Boo-koh-vahts.
    However, who cares :)
We're here for the painfully beautiful playing of uncle Larry.
Cheers and thanks for the music!

Yeah, Boo-koh-vatz is how the peeps from the Balkan would pronounce it.

Hi Tom, I don't comment often but when you mentioned passion for playing it made me want to share something. I just turned 57 I started playing guitar when I was 6. Took lessons on an off ever since. I'm not a great player but I get the job done. I have over a thousand gigs under my belt as a weekend warrior and have played in 3 bands for the last few years. When I guy like you wants to share info about triads I listen. My passion has put me on stage with great local players. The passion never subsides. Please Keep sharing what you do. We all can learn more every day. For those guys who don't appreciate your free offering the can move along to some other site. You have more feel in each if these videos than I've seen in any other videos. Much appreciated.

One of the best HS's yet...and wow, that first 1:15!!!! And the add6's...in addition to classical country, those chords remind me of 1940s Andrews Sisters (or even 1960s Beach Boys) vocal harmonies. They compliment maj7 chords perfectly. And what perfect clean unaffected tone with TB on that 335. Nice all around!!!

Dear Tom, I'm 62 and sucks on guitar and getting desesperate when I try your big streched chords position but you know what I would never miss one of your video because even if I can only pick up at most 5% of all the great tricks that you share so graciously I love it big times. 1000 Thanks dear Uncle Larry

Tom I just love your show man. Serious. I am a 50 year old guitarist that has been playing a long time, and I have learned so much watching your series because I was always decent at theory, but nowhere near your level. That and the incredibly broad spectrum of styles you can play and me being mainly a Metal/Rock guitar player, it has just opened so many doors for me. So thanks!

Thanks Uncle. I turn 53 today and my guitar playing ability seems to me to be at about the level of your chess prowess from the great way you describe it. I do have to really work at it, for not a huge amount of gain. But I really enjoy it and I love listening to your little talks and incredible demos. Keep it up my good friend.
