Spot on review. I’m here reporting 3 years later that I’ve invested in this workhorse line of mighty point-and-shoots. I am amazed and inspired creatively about what I can do with this “small, discreet travel camera.” Because of this solid history of this line, there are so many great accessories for it and I’m having a good time building it out. So far the SmallRig cage, Mag ND filter attachment and RS3 Mini are about to rock my world. 😄
Ordered my camera and a JJC filter adhesive ring and a ND variable filter. Your reviews have encouraged me to do so.
It would be amazing if you did an Rx100 VII Vs. RX100 V. challenge video. See which one is better in different conditions, especially since you miss the ND filter.
Its the ultimate camera. Will buy this camera ASAP. I carry my RX100 V absolutely everywhere!(stopped using DSLR's years ago)
The ND is not an issue for me since I only shoot at night but wouldn't hurt to have. Im also in need of more zoom and the mic jack is a plus!

Think I commented on another vid of yours about this camera and here, again, I agree. There have been times that I had to resort from my A7III to my gopro because of size weight issues and I finally snapped and picked up this rx100m7. I should have done it sooner. This camera is my new secret weapon.Cheers.
Hey, could you please do a video quality comparison between the RX100vii and the A6400? I'd love to know how it stacks up against it's bigger brother.
Hi, incidentely I had the same question and I did the test! I had the 6400 with the 2 kit lenses and the Zeiss 16-70. I compared them and found the Zeiss was better than the kit 16-50 but the 55-210 was better then the Zeiss in the 55-70 range. Also I compared the a6400/Zeiss16-70 with the RX100m6, and the RX100m6 won! I will do 2 videos in a week or 2 about these. Anyway, for me considering also the gain in weight and space and money, it is RX100m6 or 7!
The A6400 will have better high ISO IQ while the RX100vii will be far more convenient and a much better travel camera.
I love mine so much. Got the magnetic ND filter kit, the Saramonic mic, and that amazing Crane M2 Gimbal. Add a USB battery pack to the gimbal via an arm or ball head and you good to go. Great setup.
I do need to get one of those magnetic filters, I think that will make it the perfect travel setup 👍
When you look at the cost you really have to take in mind the Power and Capabilities packed into this tiny camera. Seriously, a Stacked Sensor with what may be the best AF system made is well worth the premium. The only item I would change is the lens to one with a wider aperture f1.8 to 2.8 would be quite sweet. I'll also note that an aperture that closes to f16 or f22 would be nice if it's possible. Yeah diffraction would be an issue but if you are shooting for subject motion it really wouldn't be that noticeable.
I wish Sony made a really durable and rugged version of this. Would be perfect for backpacking and adventure travel.
That would be great, might add some bulk and price but I’m all for more durability 👍
This. This is going to be our travel camera and i am terrified of a random rain cloud sneaking up on me. Anyone ever use one of these point and shoots in the rain and how did it turn out.
@@kevint9496 I'd use my GoPro in the rain. Keep the RX in a waterproof bag.

Ever thought about putting it in a camera pouch? Photographers in war zones use normal cameras. Are you just one one those people who always wants something else. a bore.

@@EyebrowBrownand 4 years later, nothing yet. VII was probably the end of the road. Next cameras with a 1 inch sensor will probably be on iPhones and androids.
could you imagine what sony could do now with a VIII? !!!! i don't think they ever will now that ZV1 is the new norm
Since I got it in late October, I’ve always had the magnetic UV filter on it and swap it out to ND filter when needed.
The “R2” Rubber grip is a must
Watching this in august 2020 and I wish I saw this video before I bought my mirrorless camera. I got a Canon M6 mark ii and I looove this camera but I realize that for the footage and videos I make something for compact wouldve been better and easier to carry around and travel with. ONLY thing I wish is that it had and Fstop as low as 1.8 and ND filter. BUT! that wouldve been to perfect of a camera and of course I think sometimes they purposely don't give us the perfect camera so we can keep buying more. Love the videos.
Great review, Everyday Dad! You can mount accessories easily atop the RX100 without a cage or bracket by using the Manfrotto Pico Clamp MC1990A + Ulanzi PT-3S.

Yes for ND filters. But would not want to go above f11 anyways here. Most lenses lose image quality rapidly at anything above that. Better to use too fast a shutter for video that f22. Good review.

I was settled on buying this camera until the iPhone Pro Max with the ultra wide lens was announced. It might be enough for everyday vlogging.
Man this is an incredible little camera. That price though😯...might as well get a full frame lol.
Yeah it’s pretty expensive but it does absolutely everything you could want 🤯
You find me a full frame that is pocketable and powers up this fast I'll buy it but until then, both my RX100's are the shizznit

That "180 Degree Rule" is BS unless you are cinematographer in which case you wouldn't be using this camera to begin with.
How's the battery life? Would the camera heat up when shooting 4K? Man....after watching your video, this Sony camera is on my wishlist now. I bought the Lumix G9 because watched your video, now you are making me buy again (not yet) 🤣🤣 Maybe next year. Thanks for sharing.
My question is what about this compared to the rx100 VA ? I want that 1.8 is it worth the price of savings compared to the 7?

That’s the one thing that this camera is missing. With a built in Nd it’s basically perfect....but expensive 🤣

I got the lensmate kit and use one of my regular 3 stop NDs. Did a little vloggy thing at a con in Toronto last week with my friends that I uploaded for kicks. If it was outdoors, it was shot with the ND on. I kind of want to get a variable ND but so far the 3 stop has been good enough, and it's easy enough to pop off when it gets dark.
I used the glass from a welding helmet as my first ND filter on my Pentax K1000

Have you thought about a grip? I have the Sony AGR2 grip and makes it so much easier to handle.
Get a Smartrig cage. Got one for my RX100 V and the one for my VII is on backorder
So now that we know you have the rx100vii + M2, make sure you cover ease of run and gun with camera locked on gimbal. Really want to know how quick it can be unlocked and used.
Can be carried on a shoulder strap and with camera in place and setup in less than 30 seconds , just one screw to undo
Worth the upgrade over the 6 I’m no camera guy just use it on holidays
What’s the video record limit at 1080p 60FPS
There is none , until the battery dies but I use a dummy battery and USB battery pack for up to 20 hours of filming. You can turn off the temp on the VII and film 4k for over an hour

The Everyday Dad I just think it’s funny and wanted to update you because I really really want to get my hands on an RX100VII that I can use. I expedited my shipping from amazon, it was scheduled to arrive today. It’s been delayed too. 🤣 I just can’t seem to get one quickly. I’m like $2500 into these cameras and have none.

Thank you for the updates! I ordered mine, had to send it back due to a dead pixel on the screen... 🙁. They told me not to use it unless I don’t want it exchanged, it’s got to arrive like new to them. 2-3 weeks... before I see a new one. I’m missing out 😶 I paid to expedite mine and everything, got it next day to send it back and not have one for 2-3 weeks. I even called Sony and they told me 2-3 weeks as well. It’s disappointing because I did nothing wrong but I lost my expedited money, my $1200 is tied up until I get another one.

If you can only get One. Rx100vii, a6400 16-55 kit, or a6600 with no lens? I already have an a7riii with several ff lenses.
I own a V and got the VII to keep it company. I'm using the V primarily for pics but have used it for filming concerts at night along with an audio recorder. Love the VII and frankly raising the iso to 3200 compensated for the f2.8 with some denoising in post. You should see the looks when I use both oh and GET THE SMARTRIG but the one for the VII is on backorder till Oct 10th grr
Good video. Ever since I bought the iPhone 11 Pro, I haven’t touched any of my cameras. There’s definitely something wrong with me. I know. I’m afraid to buy another camera. Don’t get me wrong a cell phone is not the same, carrying lenses, batteries etc it’s becoming annoying. I know. Like I said there’s totally something wrong with me. I do like how compact this Sony is, and I’m contemplating getting it because of convenience.
To this day your phone still can’t hang at 200mm and produce a usable image at the zoo, for example.

love your vids... i own several sony cameras including a7iii and rx100va. the rx100 is with me pretty much always since i recently bought it (dec) yesterday it wasn't all the way clicked onto the ball head of my tripod and fell onto my coffeetable. it's zoom was out and it landed on the lens at an angle and forced the lens into a crooked position, ruining it... i'm sick about it. i've contacted sony for help but with everyone shut down because of coronavirus i don't know when they'll get back to me about what to do. anyhow, because of this i'm here on yt watching vids on compact cameras... if i had to buy it again regardless of price i'd stay with the mark v. the nd and wide aperture are unbeatable. i ALSO use a mag filter on bright days so i can stay wide open... i love this camera and hope it can be repaired....
Well I was going to buy the GH5 but I think I will now get this. I have a LUMIX TZ110 so I can use that for the 4K crop panning videos.

The size and complexity of the lens doesn't leave room for an ND filter. $1200 isn't bad. I have $7000 invested in my FF camera and lenses.
Since the mk8 could be of similar price, and technology gets cheaper the longer we have it, we can hope there will be an ND filter on the next model.

Just started to research compact p&s cameras. Have you tested the Sony ZV-1? Seems like it addresses a couple of your major gripes and cheaper!
Great review but do you find the combination of 4K plus the Crane M2 makes the monitor so dark it is almost impossible to work in bright conditions. Certainly a big issue in the RX100M6.
For 1200 bux you might as well get the A6400 and 16mm 1.4. Its not worth it honestly

What remote are you using at 4:00 to control the RX100VII? By the way: i got the camera to record for more than 2 hours in 4K outside with high temperatures, but windy conditions. Screen was separated from the body. No overheating. You can see the test video on my channel.
Torn on whether to get this or the mark 6? are the upgrades worth it? The 4k recording time and autofocus upgrade? Personally I dont need the mic jack. Also when you say it can record for 30mins long. Does that mean after 30mins its battery is drained? or it needs to cool down? Because If i have a spare battery does that mean i can record for almost an hour long or not safe?

I'm literally fixing to pay for mine. It is going to be one and only camera, I will be using it more for pictures than video, but occasionally will be recording video and would prefer it to be 4k. Is there a better camera for around the same or better price for full package? Please enlighten me!

You forget to mention its overheating problem. Even though you can shoot in 4k for a long period of time as you did for 34 minutes, i heard it overheats after 5 minutes of 4k and shuts down. Is it true? Did you experience anything like this?

No ND is def. a deal breaker with 4K 30 for that price.

You would still need lenses for the GH5, and depending on the quality you want, the lens could cost almost as much as the camera body. And if you want to shoot fast action stills in good light, the VII will have far better autofocus and burst mode. A GH5 wont fit in your pocket or in a tiny belt pouch, either.

Not really and I didn’t consider it a con because all point and shoot cameras have roughly the same battery life.
