Saw this man lighting up the famous red double bass Yamaha kit in 1987 when Whitesnake opened for Motley Crue on the Girls tour. I was a kid and seeing Tommy Aldridge and Tommy Lee on that tour was pretty insane. Years later I can honestly say that Aldridge was the technician and Lee was the showman. Tommy Aldridge is the kind of rock drummer I prefer to emulate. A true legend!

I saw a show from that same tour in 1987. I was 17 years old then and the show I was at was in Indianapolis which happened to be the show where Motley Crue filmed the video for Wild Side. In fact, Crue played Wild Side twice to make sure they had plenty of footage to edit the video. Anyway, it was a killer show, and while I definitely enjoyed Motley Crue’s set and Tommy Lee’s crazy drum solo with his spinning kit, I was more into Whitesnake and Tommy Aldridge. Since then I’ve seen Whitesnake two more times, once in 2004, and once in 2016. All of those shows with Tommy Aldridge on drums. What a legend he is!

This video is great. You can really see how loose he’s actually playing. There’s crazy power but all the energy is coming from stick velocity. He’s gripping the sticks only tight enough to keep them from slipping out of his hands. Those big snare hits are being deflected and the cymbal crashes are finessed. That’s the secret to his longevity. That and being from another planet. Keep it up Tommy!

A legend! I learned this whole album on drums when I was 13-14. It was a lesson in tasty slick heavy licks they stayed tight with the song. There are little nuances that the average listener doesn’t hear. All they hear is bass and snare drum. Tommy is a powerhouse with finesse. In the context of a song, it’s not a place to use every possible drum solo lick in your arsenal. This is methodical and musical.

But that wouldn't be right for that moment in that song. Similar to another Whitesnake song, Only My Soul. All the drummer plays during the solo is 1/4 and it's VERY powerful.
