It is so good that the trackbed was retained.
It would have been harder to reinstate this branch line if each section or sections of trackbed had been sold off in stupid and lunatic little parcels of land. Of use to no- one. Except to bar progress?
@@alistairkewish651 Yes, I'm sure people would have already built over it.
You seem to be lucky that the trackers was not sold and the line can be revived. In Austria politicians were unfortunately less intelligent and many railways were not only shut down and the tracks removed, but the property also sold off, so that a revival is practically impossible!

Excellent views there DroneHawk. However what you have called Cappagh station was actually called Ballingrane. It was the junction between the Foynes branch and the North Kerry line.

Probably built it quicker with pick and shovel than it’s taking now with all the machines, by the time they have risk assessment, method statement, ppi equipment, etc, the boys back then would be finished and in the bar supping a pint of porter 😊

As history will tell, your people should be well versed in rail contruction. We have to thank the Irish expertise for much of our rail network.Sadly much closed in thr 60's. Crazy!
Great updates, thanks for these and looking forward to more. As someone from North Kerry living in the city, Im looking forward to this opening along with the train to take off all the heavier transport off the roads to get out there quicker. Im prob being more hopeful thinking this but would it be quicker going all the way to Rathkeale when the motorway is open then cutting across up to Askeaton then heading for Tarbert/Ballylongford/Asdee/ Moyvane? Or would the usual trip using the N69 all the way be quicker? Im sure it will be quicker once the whole motorway to Foynes opens, but that could be a while away yet.

Again you’ve provided truly superb video coverage of the railway re-instatement work. Thank you…I was gripping my armchair tightly when we flew under the various obstructions and seemingly skimmed the tops of the trees!! My congratulations to the pilot (is he or she a fully qualified Leprechaun Pilot?). I’m looking forward to seeing your next update and your editing of the aerial shots is excellent…I wonder how many separate flights were involved? Best wishes…keep up the excellent work! I heard a well known Limerick City Councillor that’s looking to be Mayor is out to get this line stopped from being relaid as Irish Rail didn’t put in a statement of environmental impact….

Regardless of the benefit a railway will have for local communities and the overall environmetal benefit of railway over roads.

Fantastic footage! I hope this new railway is past fit for at least 90mph! It’s practically arrow straight.
Considering it's for freight, the contractor probably won't be building it to standards that permit anymore than 60-70 mph in the best case scenario. While the track is straight there is still time to tell on whether track, bridges, signal blocks etc are built to suit 90 mph.
@@emily1 So, Foynes is only being reopened to freight? Whilst that is good to hear, it could be so much better!
This video shows how this is a major construction project but, apart from the new bridge over the River Maigue, no environmental assessments were completed. The development of this railway was progressed with no planning permission using a legal loophole. Trees, scrub, and other vegetation was cleared along 40km+ of derelict line, that had rewilded. It is obviously a new build - as evidenced by this video. Limerick also has one of the largest "Greenways" - again this was developed without any environmental assessments being completed. The Limerick Greenway relied on project splitting to avoid AA/EIAR.
Look at HS2. No doubt every enviromental assessment plus a multitude of other issues was covered. If you want an example of environmental chaos, this is it.
That line was never "rewilded". Its badly needed for the port of Foynes.
I hope the Foynes railway station will be re-opened too.

Please tell that there'll be a new proper station built at the old Foynes train station, not something that looks like a bus stop station like a park and ride BS.
I highly doubt it , the plan is for freight traffic only, so need for passenger facilities
The line is being re-built and re-opened for freight traffic only principally or exclusively in relation to Foyes Port. It's not intended for passenger traffic.

I presume passenger trains will have to reverse into the terminus at limerick? Was there originally a track which would have taken trains from the Foynes branch straight into Limerick? The area seems to be built up with houses etc now.
The line is being rebuilt for freight only, principally in relation to the port of Foynes.
Is that line going to be used for passenger or freight?

Thanks. Excellent footage. While they are restoring such lines perhaps all lineside hedge rows and lineside trees should be completely removed for ease of maintenance, cost saving and safety (ie like steam days when no vegetation of any kind was tolerated along railway lines)
That proposal would send the tree huggers and those in the green party in a meltdown .
@@dronehawkRail safety and maintenance viability outweighs the need to save the green tailed blue patagonian snails that reside only in Irish hedge rows. In the steam era there were no hedgerows permitted and no tress, and yet that did not cause any species extinction. The countryside is a big place. Lots of space for wildlife. In UK near many overhead electrified lines hedgerows and trees largely removed for obvious reasons.
I agree but some of the residents in Dooradoyle are aghast because vegetation on the permanent way has been cleared back which they allege is increasing noise levels from the adjacent M20 motorway. Every local Councillor in the area and the wannabee ones are on the case now.
Great footage though and I have been out the N69 a few times over the past month. It certainly looks like there is ballast being laid near the Sisks compound at Barrigone.
Does anyone know if there is a loop going to be laid e.g. in Adare?

It didn't work because the road lobby was too strong and politicians were too short-sighted. Consider the disastrous closure of the Harcourt St. to Bray line. A double-track line through the heart of Dublin suburbia! Something similar happened in Britain and look at what is happening there now. There are demands for lines to be reopened and some have. The reopening of the Athenry -Ennis section was scoffed at but now trains from Limerick to Galway are well patronised. Trains have had to be doubled in size from two to four coaches. By the way, a railway takes up much less space than a motorway and is probably environmentally more beneficial.
I quote you "rail doesn't work in Ireland”. Regarding this line, Foynes Port, Iarnród Éireann and the Government already know how much money will be saved by transferring so much of the heavy freight to and from a busy Foynes port from road to rail. Heavy freight traffic on the roads does a lot of expensive damage to them, and makes it harder for Ireland to reach its pollutant emission targets. More generally, and with reference to passenger traffic, almost all the inter-city rail lines in Ireland are paralleled by modern motorways, yet every morning tens of thousands of people leave their cars at home to take the train instead.
