I recently got to roll with Ryron at one of his seminars. He did this technique super slow-mo, it was awesome, I learned so much from his teaching me through slow rolling. I catch a lot of people with these techniques now, and I have fallen in love witht eh straight arm bar all over again. The basics are the best!!!
i really like rener's light-hearted, friendly style in these videos. great techniques of course, but what really shines through is rener's attitude and good nature. great videos.
@Manny1222 It's like saying there's one main difference between apples and oranges but other than that they're both exactly fruit. GJJ is oriented to self defense, it's how Helio shaped it his entire career. His grandsons have taken up the same path and a lot of BJJ has drifted from that path. It's all in how it's taught, you're right though, that the catalog of techniques is very similar.
Great video, can't wait to share it with the guys at my gym... What if he blocks your leg with his inside arm (in this case his right arm)? I'm guessing the physics of it mean his arm just gets pinned to his chest?
What if the opponent grab your lapel with his left hand or block your move by lifting his left arm while you try to get the mounted position? I tried this and I faced this situation many times. I tried grabbing his left arm, pulling toward his right arm and making the movement. I'd like to get my question answered.
@himoms1001 They may not have black belts in Jiu Jitsu but they do train in Jiu Jitsu, especially Karo. It's hard to find anybody in MMA who does not train in jiu jitsu. At my gym there are a ton of judo blackbelts that are taking classes in jiu jitsu.
@himoms1001 It's getting old. At first it was a conversation, but now it's apparent that you don't want to see the difference. Japanese Jiu Jitsu works under the old Samurai cold it's more about locks rather than positioning. JJJ also incorporates strikes and pressure points. Judo is all about locking in locks as they are in the act of throwing the individual. BJJ is more evolved as it comes to the ground. They have more transitions, guards, and each BJJ styles varies in Philosophy.
clearcombat. You are obviously very passionate about your martial art views and discount the Gracies. When are you going to post on RUclips your Gracie challenge video?
@himoms1001 Because I don't want anyone reading this to think that I'm trying disrespect judo or those great fighters. I just want you to know that everything has to continue to grow and evolve. Just because something has grappling on the end of it doesn't mean anything anymore. Catchwrestlers have to learn jiu jitsu, jiu jitsu have to learn wrestling, and so forth. A lot of times with martial arts the art fail to evolve with the time. Peace man I'm not trying to diss anyone.
All the fighters have mentioned have a better striking game. Santos is mostly a boxer, Silva is a unique kick boxer, GSP has become an incredible wrestler and boxer, Henderson uses his TKD kicks with powerful wrestling, and Aldo has the hardest leg kicks in the smaller division.
As a BJJ Instructor I would say the difference between a combat sport and self defense is that a combat sport (such as BJJ, boxing or MMA) trains you to do combat in a one-on-one, predictable environment with a previously agreed upon set of rules. The "street" is the exact opposite. Let`s say you are attacked by one or more assailants armed with syringes in a dark staircase, and they have a pit bull with them. Forget anything related to "sports". An armbar won`t help, neither will a side kick.
These Gracies still don.t understand that a pur mix is much more versatile than this one dimensional way of combat. When will they learn. They can't even compete anymore without a terrible ending. They were once kings, now they struggle to even make it in a competition.
so what youre saying is that all the champions pretty much wasted their time earning their black belts, and there is nothing linking their succes with the fact that they all learned grappling via BJJ ?
@latebjart ya um a syringe isn't a weapon but I guess they could poke you. Also wtf with the brief case are they gonna beat you with it or just take syringes out during the fight. As for the pitbull I really don't think a bunch of thugs that can't even get a real weapon are gonna be able to control it. Also where do you live? Inside a woman's nightmares? When have you ever heard of this situation?
@himoms1001 Never mind dude. The philosophy is different. I have studied this stuff my whole life. I know a lot of people that are black belts in Japanese and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as well as Judo. Just enter a competition with these guys and you will quickly see a difference. All I know is martial arts, so I don't have any reason to make this stuff up. I myself was bias towards Jiu Jitsu before I started training in it, and I will tell you it's a wonderful art that's forever evolving.
I Agree that wrestling is a good counter to BJJ, but you might aswell say that wrestling is one dimensional then. by the way a list of some of the UFC champions : Junior Dos Santos heavyweight champ BJJ black belt Anderson Silva middleweight champ = BJJ black belt Georges St-pierre welterweight champ = BJJ black belt Benson Henderson lightweight champ = BJJ brown belt Jose Aldo lightweight champ = BJJ black belt. whats your philosophy on this ?
@himoms1001 Today's jiu jitsu fighters aren't using yesterdays grappling moves (well some). You're going to run into a lot of different guards and set ups. Fighters like Karo are trying to update Judo, but not without the help of first studying jiu jitsu. If I put a judo fighter against another Judo fighter he will do well on his back, but if I put him up against a jiu jitsu figher, he'll lose. The difference is Jiu Jitsu emphasizes more on grappling. That's why I keep telling you to compete.
@himoms1001 BJJ is always evolving. BJJ trains both gi and no gi. A lot of BJJ schools incorporates wrestling with Judo into their stand up. GJJ is more for street combat rather than sport tournament. There are certain things in Judo and BJJ that you just wont see in GJJ. GJJ also uses more strikes while on the ground. I don't have enough characters to go into great details. Trust me when I say they are not the same. BJJ & GJJ are excellent of the back. You can't put a judo fighter on his back.
@himoms1001 Because as great as an art Judo is, it has it's limits. You may be a Judo practitioner, which is why you cannot see it, but I almost double dare you to enter a competition with an elite grappler like an amateur mma bout, or a NAGA competition and you will see. A lot of Judo practitioners switch over from Judo to Jiu Jitsu. They usually combine the Judo throws with the Jiu Jitsu philosophy of grappling.
In my opinion, i reckon that you'll not be able to get his arm if the guy tries to get your lapel 'cause you'll not have angle to this. But, anyways, I'll study this position 'cause somehow I liked it.
@bushidoartss I've tried Krav and seen this proven wrong again and again. ALL defense against multiple attackers should be based on escape and evasion. This is the best that can be hoped for without assuming vastly inferior weapons and/or tactics on the part of the enemy, both dangerously stupid assumptions.
@MrMZaccone Then in that case, maybe we fail to properly communicate. Really though, they have it explained. Personally i really don't care, it's the same thing to me.
@MrMZaccone There is ONE main difference but other than that it's exactly the same. They focus more on being able to defend yourself and win against a bigger and stronger opponent. All cool though. People who say BJJ and GJJ is nothing have their head up their asses.
No, you have you understand that wrestling is the oldest of the grappling arts, 7000 years old. Jujitsu was developed by the 11th century exclusively used by the Samurai. This had striking and limited kicking in it BJJ was first judo then changed to jujitsu. It is important in mma and in self defense, I should know, I am a personal protection expert. Boxing is the best for hand strikes, kick boxing for the complete striking arts, judo for the sweeps, greco for tossing jujitsu for submissions
WWWHHHAAATTT You have no idea what your talking about Gracie Jiu Jitsu is a complete art it can defeat all other arts and it was made off of street fights it is from Japanese Jiu Jitsu and transformed to a leverage based system where a 5'4" 140 pound man can defeat a 6'5" 280 pound opponent in a real no holds bared fight. I'd like to see you try to fight any of the Gracie's and I'd love to see you with absolutely no control and everything you were tought go down the drain and not mean anything.
@himoms1001 Jiu Jitsu offers takedowns and throws. They both derived from the same system. If you do some research you will learn that Judo is considered to be a sport in Japan. Jiu Jitsu was too hardcore for sports. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Japanese Jiu Jitsu, and Gracie Jiu Jitsu all vary in their philosophy and approach to self defense. I only have some many words to really prove my point, but if you walk into a jiu jitsu gym, you will know the difference immediately.
Right... so you go to the ground in a street fight and you must wait to get that arm bar as his friends close in on you and stomp your head into the ground. We you friend is losing you jump in, it's the street mentality. BJJ is fine but you must understand that striking in a street fight is better. MIlitary, Police, Security are taught to stay in standup mode until you can throw him and handcuff him. Much safer.
clearcombat pretty sure the Gracie family offer the police some of the most effective training available in the US using Jiu Jitsu...but nice try at making a point there. I've never heard any Gracie Jiu Jitsu instructor or practitioner recommend staying on the ground against multiple opponents unless you literally have no choice.
@Manny1222 I've got a blue belt awarded to me by Helio Gracie in 1996 but maybe you should explain it to me again, maybe I don't get it. More likely I just can't understand the point you're trying to make through all the non-sequitur bullshit. BTW, I also have a G.U. account and have since day one. Maybe we even agree, what do you think of that? I just can't tell because I can't make heads or tails of what your actual point is.
@himoms1001 Now you're talking crazy. I don't have time for this. You're the only judo fighter that's still trying to keep hope alive. Ad Santel went to Japan and beat all the top Judo fighters with ease. You may know them, but out of respect for them I will not mention their names. Once Santel beat 5th and 6th degree black belts, Japanese fighters began training in Catch wrestling abandoning Judo. That's why the majority of Japanese MMA fighters train in Catch wrestling and jiu jitsu.
Japanese is more complete than BJJ. BJJ is sport oriented. I am a personal protection person and I would not use BJJ. I have studied Krav Maga and JKD recently. This is how I take care of any attackers. Trap them, strike them, sweep them, arrest them.
I studied japanese jiujitsu for 4 years, but felt powerless against a powerful wrestler or trained kickboxer. I grew up in Brooklyn, NY and believe me when I tell you I had plenty of street fights, Once I learned kickboxing, boxing and judo I felt much better about any type of self defense situation. To say,"no need to learn another art" is showing me you have not expanded your knowledge. Jiujitsu is only the tip of the iceberg.
The Gracies did not want to teach anything else but BJJ, and their fighters started to lose badly because of it. Eventually they came around to it just like wrestlers.
@himoms1001 See that's what I'm saying man just forget it. Go ahead and keep living your life. I grapple with a lot of brown belts and black belts in Judo, so I am not making this stuff up. You're deliberately being stubborn, so having an intellectual conversation with you is impossible.
@himoms1001 look "himoms" I do know, but I choose to not to argue over dumb stuff. I'm still saying go to a school or tournament get your ass beat and you will find out. I'm not going to argue with you anymore. I have a lot of friends in Judo. I also studied Judo, and Jiu Jitsu, and I'm not evaluating anything from a close mind. Personally I don't care if you never do jiu jitsu, It's your loss.
then why are the gracies one-dimensional ? The gracies at least promote training with strikes unlike wrestling ? Wrestlings is great yeah, but often lacking sweeps, attacks, submissions and escapes when they are put on their backs. also many of the earlier wrestling styles prohibit the use of your own legs for takedowns, Judo is often limited in many schools by being pretty much throws only kickboxing is limited to not using elbows and knees where I think Muay Thai is superior

this is one of these videos that seems easy but it is worth watching time and time again
Awesome techniques....we just did these in class this week. They really resonate with me. Thanks for the great video Rener!
Rener, you are an amazing teacher.
i really like rener's light-hearted, friendly style in these videos. great techniques of course, but what really shines through is rener's attitude and good nature. great videos.
thank you Gracie Family for all the great knowledge!
You are a national treasure, sir.
Love the way Rener teaches.
Thankyou for sharing these tutorials as this will help me a lot to advance a lot faster in my bjj drills so I can impress my teacher.

I can't wait to try these moves.
Excellent move and instructions. Thanks Rener.
Sick transition and awesome subs. Thanks for sharing!
Man cameras were crappy in 2009. 240P looks as bad as Karate in a street fight.
What if the opponent grab your lapel with his left hand or block your move by lifting his left arm while you try to get the mounted position? I tried this and I faced this situation many times. I tried grabbing his left arm, pulling toward his right arm and making the movement. I'd like to get my question answered.
Excellent!!! Thanks a lot GracieAcademy
rener....your explanations are crystal....clear...5strz
@Manny1222 So it's different but exactly the same. Nice logic there, Skippy.

@bushidoartss Based on what? Besides, this isn't BJJ this is GJJ and THERE'S A DIFFERENCE.
