From my experience of 40 years of playing golf, I do believe different putter designs do help for different people. Say mallet vs blade. However a $100 vs $500 putter not so much.
Your thoughts on this issue are not new to me. I’ve often said that I could putt well with a wooden 2x4 once I got used to the feel. I have an old style Acushnet Bullseye putter that I bought 40 years ago. It is very accurate on short putts and, at those distances, it does just as well as any Scotty Cameron that you can buy. But, on long putts, it doesn’t have the mass nor balance to get good results consistently. I’ve played a 2-ball Odyssey for years because it fits me well and I can’t be tempted by advertising gimmicks. I’m sticking with it and any putting deficiencies are with me, not the putter. Some days I putt great, some days, not so much. I’m an imperfect golfer. Great video. Thanks a million.

I made 300 hundred putters (long putters) about 30 years ago. My design was simple, center-shafted, great MOI using lead in the ends of the head, zero loft, and the lie angle was the most upright the rules allow. I’m still using it and has rarely let me or my wife down. People are crazy spending so much money for a putter and buying into the marketing hype.
I played with a Ping Anser 2 for a long time. Someone stole it from my bag when my group made the turn to the back 9 one day and I went to the bathroom. I went on Ebay and found one just like it and bought it, put my favorite grip on it, and I was back in business. I might have spent $50? Anyway, over time I have done well with that putter. I recently was clearing out old equipment from the garage and sold a ton of old stuff, to include a lot of putters I have messed with along the way. I agree with everything you said in this video. The putter does not make you a good putter. Learning to putt well makes you a good putter. As I age, I have a good or bad score based on how well I am putting because I am taking more shots to reach the green. I offset with more wedge practice which gets the ball closer to the hole and resulted in fewer putts as well.
11:28 this is actually something I've tested with a wilson tour special II so about as unforgiving as it gets. I purposely hit it off the toe or heel but still put a good stroke on it. All went straight, the ones off the heel almost even went the distance, the ones off the toe just came up a little short, but none of them were going left or right cause the face was still square at impact.
My old golf buddy used an ancient bullseye so worn out you couldn't read the makers name. When ill health forced his retirement he asked me if I wanted any of his clubs I asked for his putter thinking some of the magic might transfer. Sadly not.
Inserts probably don't matter, but I really prefer the feel of a white hot putter. That gives me more confidence so that helps. I've also noticed that heavier putters stay on line during the backswing more than a lighter putter.
i would really like to try a lab putter. i have several now, face balanced, toe hang and the heel toe ping answer type, mallet and blades. i think my stroke is maybe too much of arc and when i try more of a straight back and thru stroke it feels too manipulated, always working on it. i do not like to spend a ton on putters, alot of the ones i have i got in the bargain bin or rummaging. thnx for the insight.
I just got a cleveland HB soft 10.5 and i think its wonderful. Reasoably priced, i get along with it pretty well and it looks great. Id love to see a review of that line of putters

There are LAB putters on the shelf at many stores. Nothing like the hands-on experience. I was very surprised by how solid the DF felt. But if you're paying that much for a putter, bring your golf shoes and get fit for the best results.
First let me say, I am not sure about part of what I am about to say. First putting has changed. The "release" (swing) is very important as Crenshaw finally proved to everyone. Me too. These parts are true. But it just may be that certain putters have better swing balance when released. I say this because some top pros ditch their putter claiming they do not like the balance and feel it has. And that often works. I need to check this out myself.
Brilliant video, thanks. I've had a few "flat bats" in forty odd years of golf, and I rate myself as a good putter ... 14 single putts in a round, once (not all for birdies, of course). I now use a Teardrop blade, but I did have a Taylor Made Ghost Spider which was exceptional for distance control, and gave a Rolls-Royce feel, but there's so much going on with the "Starship Enterprise" head that I just don't seem to be able to aim the damn thing for shorter putts. I agree with you 100% about putter length. I see so many players with the butt somewhere under their armpit. Mine is around 31 inches, ok, I have long arms, but I'm certain it gives me much more stability and control. I don't do lines, smudges, tracks, or bands on my ball either. When Ronnie O'Sullivan uses a cue-ball with a line on I may consider it!
I use a Titleist Dead Center putter from about 1985 and I putt better than all of my friends who have spent thousands over the years on all the new gimmicks. I've only had to re-grip it several times. It's not the putter but the hundreds of hours practicing with something that is comfortable for you that will make you better.
I switch between two putters based on how well I'm hitting my irons. If irons are good I use a Wilson Tour Special Forged (free) that I found 25' up in a pine tree back in 1974. Ten feet and in it's deadly. If irons aren't doing well I use a Yes (new but an older model $40) blade putter that is much heavier and more consistent than the Wilson at longer putting distances. Sometimes I carry both. I play a little outside to box. Sometimes I carry one left-handed club in case I draw a drive a little too much.

LAB was LATE to the party concerning toque balanced putters. Not a bad putter though. There are many others who use the same principle and use different menchanical solutions. My old backstryke sort of had it after retuning (Odyssey did a louzy job on balancing) Bobby Grace had ans has several putters (he knows production and design) otherwise try Edel (less weeigth in the toe) and LBNL Axis really is on a streak with their putters. One element you seem to forget is variable face angles. This feature has seen many varieties over time with the most recognizable: sik.
SeeMore rifle scope tech. is a game change innovation IMHO. When Zack Johnson was winning he used a SeeMore likewise switching to a SeeMore coincided with Payne Stewart's big win.
I'm not sure it is a technology shift or game changing but do agree with you that their Rifle Scope aiming system does help make sure the putter face is square to the line your eyes are on,

Great video exposing the BS that manufacturers pump. I play a Ben Sayers groove sole blade, balance and feel is superb. I'm 68 and it's at least 1 year older than I am - you should do a review on them. Lost available on eBay.
I always looked at Scotty Camerons as basically Golf Gucci. I'll take an Odyssey Tri Hot or Taylormade Spider any day. A Scotty is purely for showing off or I guess some kind of extrinsic confidence that will wear off.
I'd like to hear what you think of the Evnroll zero. I was a 13 handicap in March and I've been a 7 since june. I previously used a Ping Darby for 6 years, between the pushes and pulls I hit my line maybe 40% of the time. I was a lousy putter! With the Zero, I roll my line maybe 90% of the time. I've probably 3 putted a dozen times in 40 rounds since I bought it, last year and every previous year I lived by the 3 putt. The Evnroll is saving me an average of 5-6 strokes per round. Say what you will...it did for me what you're saying putters can't do.
@@robertdulaney7622 the Evnroll zero is a great putter it is made in such a way as to reduce torque and is also zero loft like the putter I use. I think your success with it’s a combination of it being a quality putter and your confidence in it. Also Evnroll doesn’t make any fake marketing claims
Would be interested in your take on adjustable/removeable weights in the clubhead. I find that I tend to hit my putts very slightly towards the toe, so I usually add some weight on the toe end (lead tape or change the adjustable weight pattern) to minimize the mishit. Also good for adjusting to different green speeds. Your thoughts.....??
Lot's of Pros use lead tape on their putters as an adjustment for various things including changing courses and green speeds. I did a review last spring on an adjustible...off course...putter by white putters that you could change heads, shafts weights grips everything and thought it was very cool. Tiger's famous Scotty Cameron had lead tape on it quite often. Several current putters have adjustable weights and I think that experimenting with those is great if you play in constantly changing conditions or different courses in different areas every week. Your use of weight to adjust for your stroke seems like a good idea to me
All very interesting! I have a putter with grooves that straighten the misshit putt, and i've never missed a 50 foot putt - that said, i've never had a 50 foot putt to try and make. 😅😅. Another great video, thanks 👍

I putt best with an old offset blade. Whenever I use mallets, I doubt my alignment. With the blade, all I do is look at the hole and putt. No face insert making the ball go faster. No lines to distract me.
Is using Quintic and SAM to evaluate how you strike and roll the ball with your putter just more marketing and trying to sell you on a new putter? Is it worth the cost of having it done?
Great question. I think the data is valuable but only serious professionals and coaches should purchase that equipment or software. I think the data and info can help you make changes or corrections to your stroke, set up etc. without spending big money on a new putter or expensive equipment. And of course there are coaches and online courses like the one I've created who can give you the information and techniques to get all those things right for much less. I probably would discourage you from paying for a SAM Lab or Quintic session unless you are trying to get on the tour or get a college scholarship etc.
@@simmi352 I think those are great. That is the biggest point and advantage of weight distribution to the heel and toe as far as possible. It helps maintain consistent distance when you don’t hit the ball dead in the sweet spot thank you.

@@andykennedy2847 I like either of those putters and center shafted simply means center shafted it doesn’t mean that it is weight or mass balanced or has zero torque. My point in this video is that any new technology other than moving the weight to the perimeter or reducing the actual torque in the Putter during the swing is simply Marketing.
#5 u are incorrect imo.. , certain technology (Sik) gets the balls rolling sooner to reduce skidding, which in turn makes it go online more often #6 heavy putters are used because some people can't control a lighter head, it's easier to keep it online, I have a Lab Mezz Max and all my Scotty's and Oddysey's are on my display shelf. I live near Revere, let's have a putting contest!! 😁
Whenever you like...there is actually plenty of research on super slo motion video to show that sik doesn't get the ball rolling as qucikly as several other brands. I certainly said in the video that some technology is an improvment. The LAB brand I specifically mentioned as better and you say you play one. Certainly a heavy putter would help some people control speed...I was very clear that the lie is Heavier Putters roll the ball straight...not the same as speed.

It is balanced in a way with the actual neck that attaches from the shaft to the putter reduces torque and increases MOI, but it is not truly mass balanced , and zero torque. So it is an improvement but not huge like LAB or Honu. PXG claims that their new Allan putter has zero torque but my local golf shop doesn’t have one for me to test yet. Axis is similar I should say but not the same as LAB or Honu
It seems like with the putter, it’s all about confidence. If I am more confident with a $5.00 Putter rather than a $500 Putter, I’ll be better with it.
just like anything with this game, if you look down at your club, Iron, Driver, Putter and the look gives you confidence. you will want to practice more, then play more and magically you get better. Or buy one of my 20 videos on how to play the game!! LMAO
@@misteroneputt No I believe you covered the largest deceptions used by manufacturer and retailers to obtain sales of the next new thing. But confidence in you putter is the biggest key in performance, this gained from performance not change of equipment.
Positive Putters started in 1975 and achieved zero torque using a side saddle style. They have been tested in LAB Golf's revealer and Honu's honuizer and are not 100% torque free. But you are correct there is nothing new under the sun...the idea of zero torque has been around for years...But lately more and more companies are figuring out how to implement it....for example the blades from LAB or the new Allan from PXG...not sure about it, but testing one next week.

I have thousands of slow motion videos from face impact. I tested 32 different face materials and grove designs to develop a face that promotes more forward roll and less skip. I tested this against all the big brands. I can tell you that you are in fact wrong. I have also tested lots of brands with my robot putter arm and can tell you that on heel 20mm centre and toe 20mm strikes the putter you have has a massive difference in the total length and direction of the putt. Scope Putters was the best in this testing and the LAB Mez was the worst with a shocking result from heel strikes.

I stick to LAB now …. My issue was always heal out or toe out first and it drove me nuts …. My LAB fixed that and I’m happy
Some people just can't get the feel , or read a green + speed of stroke are all factors no miracle putters out there

One of the best local players I’ve known used a Bullseye putter, about as low-tech as there is.

maltby pure-track tour milled ptm-1 blade putter is every bit as good as the Scotty Cameron’s I have had.

#5 u are incorrect imo.. , certain technology (Sik) gets the balls rolling sooner to reduce skidding, which in turn makes it go online more often #6 heavy putters are used because some people can't control a lighter head, it's easier to keep it online, I have a Lab Mezz Max and all my Scotty's and Oddysey's are on my display shelf. Whenever you like...there is actually plenty of research on super slo motion video to show that sik doesn't get the ball rolling as qucikly as several other brands. I certainly said in the video that some technology is an improvment. The LAB brand I specifically mentioned as better and you say you play one. Certainly a heavy putter would help some people control speed...I was very clear that the lie is Heavier Putters roll the ball straight...not the same as speed.
Have you checked out PXG Allan putter? Supposed to be torque free.

What about Axis 1 putter? Is that not same tech as LAB and Honu? In fact they had torque free putters 1st in 2009 I believe.

It is balanced in a way with the actual neck that attaches from the shaft to the putter reduces torque and increases MOI, but it is not truly mass balanced , and zero torque. So it is an improvement but not huge like LAB or Honu. PXG claims that their new Allan putter has zero torque but my local golf shop doesn’t have one for me to test yet. Axis is similar I should say but not the same as LAB or Honu

It seems like with the putter, it’s all about confidence. If I am more confident with a $5.00 Putter rather than a $500 Putter, I’ll be better with it.

Playing with a 7 year old taylomade ardmore 3 putter seems to work for me
I use 4 ping putters. BECU B60, PAL2, Zing2, and Anser 3. It’s the Putter, not the putter.

honu and lab putters can twist due to slight wrist rotation. talk about expensive putters both honu and lab putters are both north of $350.
Odysseys win majors every year and they go on sale all the time. That's the baseline. Anything more is a luxury toy.

@@misteroneputt No I believe you covered the largest deceptions used by manufacturer and retailers to obtain sales of the next new thing. But confidence in you putter is the biggest key in performance, this gained from performance not change of equipment.

Positive Putters preceded LAB putters by years... nothing new under the sun
Positive Putters started in 1975 and achieved zero torque using a side saddle style. They have been tested in LAB Golf's revealer and Honu's honuizer and are not 100% torque free. But you are correct there is nothing new under the sun...the idea of zero torque has been around for years...But lately more and more companies are figuring out how to implement it....for example the blades from LAB or the new Allan from PXG...not sure about it, but testing one next week.

I have thousands of slow motion videos from face impact. I tested 32 different face materials and grove designs to develop a face that promotes more forward roll and less skip. I tested this against all the big brands.
I can tell you that you are in fact wrong.
I have also tested lots of brands with my robot putter arm and can tell you that on heel 20mm centre and toe 20mm strikes the putter you have has a massive difference in the total length and direction of the putt. Scope Putters was the best in this testing and the LAB Mez was the worst with a shocking result from heel strikes.
