  • For my 13th birthday in April of 1999, Mom and Dad teamed up to get me a Japanese Sega Dreamcast with games - including Sonic Adventure! It was one of the most epic days of my life, and Dad caught it all on tape.

As a father this has damn near brought a tear to my eye at times and has inspired me to break out the camera and record my 4 year old as much as possible as she has already discovered a love for video games. I can’t thank you enough for sharing these memories, it’s honestly the closest I can get to a time machine. I always wanted to get a Dreamcast as a kid and it’s the one major console I never got. It’s incredible the amount of time I spent dreaming of getting one.

    • @CRAZYCANUCKTV
      @CRAZYCANUCKTV Год назад

      The graphics are still very unique to other consoles. I still play dreamcast and it's unbelievable how ahead of its time it really was. I still think those games hold up to today and aged very well. The feeling you get when you play it is unlike any other. If you thought the Dreamcast was awesome, you should check out the Sega Naomi arcades!! I wish Sega never stopped making consoles but I truly think no other console launch has equalled the amount of hype the dreamcast did!

      There really isn't a big leap in graphical detail when new consoles come out, there's not much more that can be done with console tech (we have had the internet and pretty much every major media component included in game consoles since '99-2000), online shopping has killed the launch day wait outside the store...
      I mean, look at the difference in gaming from 1980 to 2000. Almost a leap in light-years. The difference between 2000 and 2020 is not that major. Halo CE from 2001 is still a totally enjoyable game in 2021, 20 years later. Games on Atari in 1980 were leap-frogged by the NES so drastically, a mere 5 years later, that they were almost unplayable.

    • @m.l.679
      @m.l.679 2 года назад +3

      1982 here. I feel the same. NES was huge, SNES was Mindblowing, PS1/N64 omg .. PS2/Dreamcast O_O!!!! Then it started to go downhill with little to no innovation. For those with PC those years saw games like DOOM, Diablo, C&C, Starcraft, Unreal Tournament etc. Arcades where still going strong with releases like Daytona USA, MK, Killer Instinct, SF2, Konami TMNT .. Those were golden years.

      @marioe.4400 2 года назад

      It changed everything: My first system was a Famiclone, which I got in '98 or '99.
      The very first game I played in the built-in list was Yie Ar Kung-Fu.
      Among others that stuck with me the most were Super Mario Bros. ; Circus Charlie; Tiny Toon Adventures; TMNT; Lode Runner...
      My friend since '98 had a PS1 with Tekken 3 and several demos, so that exposure was a big jump in tech.
      Now imagine going from that world to the Christmas of 2000 with a Dreamcast!
      Firstly, I popped in the Dream On Vol.2 demo disc: Rayman 2: The Great escape, a "real 3D" world running at a locked 60 fps.
      Immediately after that, I booted the bundled-in Sonic Adventure: Between the vibrant colors, the blinding sun at Emerald Coast and that camera close-up on Sonic just before the first boss battle, it impressed me even more than Rayman did.
      But what really made my balls prematurely drop at 8-years-old, was Shenmue.
      That game helped me tremendously in learning English, as well as making me perceive Japanese culture beyond the Anime archetype to which I'd been exposed to in my baby years (Dragon Ball).
      I'd wager that one of the greatest elements in that game's design shows itself in this exact circumstance:
      A kid with a very basic notion of a foreign language, being able to gather clues through raw exploration, to complete the journey without any outside help, be it guides; magazines; or an older family member of friend.
      Aside from Shenmue and Shenmue II being my all-time favorites of any system, there's:
      Skies Of Arcadia;
      Jet Set Radio;
      Capcom vs. SNK;
      Street Fighter Alpha 3;
      Soul Calibur;
      Sonic Adventure 1 & 2;
      Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2;
      Spider-Man;
      Sega Extreme Sports;
      Metropolis Street Racer.

I was in school constantly reading Next Gen Magazine looking at dreamcast articles. My dad got the Dreamcast for me on Christmas that year and I received Sonic Adventure, Blue Stinger, Ready 2 Rumble, Soul Calibur, Power Stone, Marvel vs Capcom, Arcade Stick, VMU, and a extra Dreamcast Controller (MadKatz Controller). Its still the best Christmas for me till this day, my parents always went all out on me and my siblings like this.

When consoles weren't just a means to an end to play video games there were certain game you could ONLY experience on a specific system.

      @colindunham5717 2 года назад +1

      I also wasn’t aware of the voltage difference but luckily never had a console failure because of it but I always wondered why some would get incredibly hot to the touch and my white Saturn actually turned yellow only in the location above the internal power supply as a result of the high temperatures. Now I of course use a stepdown converter. 👍

    Thanks for sharing this precious, intimate footage of your family.
    To me since a child, gaming has always been a form of escapism, born 94' into a very volatile relationship, being able to turn on my n64 or the faithful gameboy colour and get lost for hours in these amazing worlds of sprites, colours and sounds, life seemed worry-free if only for those golden moments.
    I wish I had a Dad there like yours to capture and share them with.
    Much love ❤

    Your dad was an amazing human being and his light shines through all of these videos sometimes I come here not to only learn about the past and what made the consoles and Relics I now collect as a 19 year old so breath-taking but to also receive a chuckle or two from your father sometimes I need that and he always knows how to make you laugh rest in peace ❤

    I have watched tons of retro unboxing videos on youtube, and they've never really bought back memories for me. Until I seen your Xbox original day one video, that your dad got as you came home from school. The flood gates of memories came back so hard that I almost started to cry. Not only are there things I remember from the video game console that is shown, but I look at things in your house that I remember being in my home or my friends houses in the 90's, early 2000s. At lot of your videos (the playstation one hit very hard)just brings back so many great memories from the days before social media, the days when you had to read a gaming magazine to find out about the hot new tech coming out. It's so insane, i can't believe you have unboxing videos from the 90s. Im very glad that you share this all for us to see. Your dad was a truly great man, (Heck your whole family is awesome) I can see the love you have for him, just as much as I can see the love he had for his son. Even if it was as simple as buying a gaming console or playing video games.
    This has been one of the best channels I have ever come across.

    I'm that father that buys his sons all the systems, games and plays everything with them. I'm blue collar and can't afford everything but I want to foster my boy's imagination and wonder. I hope they enjoy it as much as you did. I grew up on NES and SNES.
    My parents were tolerant of games but didn't understand why someone would buy the NES, invest in tons of games and accessories only to want a SNES.
    Thank goodness my aunt came to the rescue, God rest her soul. She understood and bought me a SNES for my birthday. Whether you knew it or not Aunt Cheryl, you made a young boy's year and I'm forever greatful.

    Hey Tyler, you had the coolest dad dude! Love watching these videos. My brother imported our Dreamcast from Japan the back end of 1998 (it may have even been the launch) and it blew us away the House of the Dead 2, Sonic Adventure, Sega Rally 2 & Soul Calibur that come out on launch or soon thereafter and it was awesome. I’ve never had that experience from a console launch since, it really was the future and Dreamcast was way ahead of it time. Keep up the great work man!

    Thank you for sharing these memories with us. I remember when I got my first Dreamcast as a hand me down from my uncle. The one I got didn’t have all the cables so I wasn’t able to play it and they ended up junking it later on. Despite that it sewed the seeds for an immense fascination for the system and I remember learning all I could about it and it made me really want one. I finally got one on Christmas last year and I absolutely fell in love. This is such a great system and I’ll always remember it fondly. Got it when I was 19 and I just turned 20 today. 8 years worth of waiting to get one and it was absolutely worth it.

    Great video. Your father was a really great dad. Watching these reminds me of my own family moving from Long Island to Texas although we ended up in the DFW Metroplex in the 80s. I got a Commodore 64 for Xmas and made a lot of lifelong friends around that computer.

    Thanks so much for this, Tyler. You and your father perfectly captured the era, and the excitement of Dreamcast's launch.
    I turned 14 on May 1st, 1999, legal working age at the time in Florida. I worked all summer at a Publix pushing shopping carts, to afford the Dreamcast, Hydro Thunder, Ready 2 Rumble, Sonic Adventure, Pen Pen Tricelon, and House of the Dead 2. 9/9/99 still means so much to me.
    Your video brought the memories flooding back. Thank you again, Tyler.
