I got my first dreamcast about two years ago, but it was untested. After trying and failing to fix it multiple times, I finally got it working yesterday. Definitely looking forward to checking out Ikaruga, Grandia and Soul Calibur.
My favorite Dreamcast game is Evolution 2. Takes place after Evolution (1), which I didn't think was near as good, but worth playing for the adventure. Power Stone 1 and 2 are SOLID games that would hold up today probably better than most games from that age. Every Sonic title (SA 1+2, and Shuffle) Skies of Arcadia was super fun but playing it after Evolution 2 was a bad idea haha still, it was a good time.
Never had a dreamcast either. Started emulating it just today. The variety of games you got was truly amazing. Wish there was somehow a way to still make games for dreamcast it has such an interesting design to it.
It seems they did well already, since they were two excellent consoles ! ☺ (A new console has almost always been pricey, unfortunately, so we may have to wait after the wave somrtimes.)
The only game I vastly regret not getting to play was D2. The gameplay was part survival horror, part first person on rails shooter, part hunting sim and part Metal Gear Solid cutscene fest. Seriously very interesting story, despite an oddly silent protagonist. To this day I'm disappointed it was never released on any other console. Also yes, I did make it to the end.
I'm going to purchase sega dreamcast japanese version console tmrw. even though it's a commercial failure , it;s still great for collection. i can still enjoy daytona use 2001, shenmue 1 and 2, snk vs capcom and etc.
You should definitely check out the Steam Deck then. That thing can play almost everything lol. I've got all the old consoles from SNES, N64, to Dreamcast, PS2, and even some PS3 on there.
Finally!! A RUclipsr out there that recognizes just how good Metropolis Street racer is and was at the time, for the Sega DreamCast!!! Absolutely the best racing game on the system in my opinion and it was my favorite as well- Metropolis Street racer Sega rally championship 4 x 4 evo Just to name a few really good ones
Good list. A few that were missed though: Air Force Delta (one of the best flight battle games ever made for any system) Starlancer (one of the best space fighter sims on a console) E.G.G. (an incredible and unique ARPG) Berserk: Gut's Rage (great action/adventure game in the Berserk anime universe) Gauntlet Legends (3D Gauntlet game) Record of Lodoss War (Diablo style RPG in ROLW anime universe) Armada (above view space fighter strategy, not SHMUP, game) Sonic Adventure 2 (not as good as the original, but still really good) Virtual Tennis (amazing even for people who don't play sports games) Shenmue (why was this missing?) ***WARNING: DO NOT BUY BLUE STINGER, IT IS PROBABLY THE ONLY BAD DC GAME***
Grandia 2 is one of my favorite DC games. i loved the graphics. to me it often invoked a sense of looking at mobiles. the way the objects and characters appeared on the screen made it feel like i could reach in and pick things up like scale models. played Q3A and UT99. played Q3A the most, i played it online some.
4:18 Another bad decision with the Dreamcast was not including second stick on the controller. I had Quake III and that kept me with the Goldeneye controls, then with Halo, I chose Legacy, and now my brain is stuck like that and half the games these days don't support legacy controls anymore.
The list was great, but Really not Shenmue? I get that is your personal list, but if the title says "Must Play Games" Shenmue 1 and 2 are a must, so it would be cool mentioned them at least, also some of my favorite games were Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Resident Evil Code Veronica, Zombie Revenge, Jet Set Radio, Tech Romancer, Capcom vs SNK 1 and 2, both Crazy Taxi 1 and 2, Skies of Arcadia, Grandia 2, Project Justice and Marvel vs Capcom 1 and 2
@@centro8894 is awesome I played it on Dreamcast and PS1 is a must play too, but you don't lose very much for playing it in PS1 instead of Dreamcast, just the better models and 60 fps instead of 30
I had a dreamcast, thought it broke within a week, wouldn't turn on. Turns out the power plug wasn't inserted all the way. I was just a kid, i didn't know any better.
You're the first human being I hear sayin that you think Sonic Adventure 1 is better than Sonic Adventure 2. I finally found a soul brother when it comes to this. Thanks for not feeling quite like an alien anymore 😂
don't even remember saying sonic adventures but it said I did you said it correctly lmao sonic adventure 2 is better in my eyes but clearly I think sonic adventure 1 has better gameplay
Ikaruga was the last game I got for my Dreamcast. Annoyingly, it was never properly released in the U.S., so it was only available as an import. Amazing game!
What Super Mario 64 was for the N64 was Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast in my opinion. Super Mario 64 blew my mind in 1997, and Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast impressed me in the same way in 1999. It was one of my first Dreamcast games.
Where is the most important one : Sefagaga ! This game is for the fans of Sega and you should play it , so much fun. Another one is phantasy star online and the online is the key to that game ( I play it everyday online). Last but not least atomiswave ports, not official and came only 2 years ago but a fantastic refreshing new games for the system
the fixed angle is what made the old RE games. When we were kids some of us wanted it to be more like an FPS but boy were those kids WRONG. so much better with fixed angle
The fixed angle was simply a limitation of the hardware at the time. They were just getting into polygonally based rendering back then. I think games like the excellent RE2 remake proved that that fixed camera angle was not necessary to facilitate a sense of controlled “dread”.
honestly i always felt the two things that killed the dreamcast was, first the controller. no one wanted a single analog controller with so few buttons going into the 2000s, not many like the 3d controller on the saturn so i don't know what they were thinking there. secondly and most important was early piracy made it difficult to get developers on board for the dreamcast
I completely agree with the piracy part. Their security was defeated so fast and so easily that you could literally burn off the shelf CDW’s from Dreamcast ISO’s soon after launch
I don't disagree from a finding-games perspective, but OP is justified in calling this out from a title-versus-content expectations perspective. Especially considering the list leads in with the best-selling game on the console.
I don’t know why people say Sonic adventure 2 looks better than Sonic Adventure 1. It doesn’t. Sonic Adventure 1 is the better looking game. Much higher resolution textures, and that’s why it has a lower frame rate. Sonic 2 simplified textures more to achieve better frame rate and it’s a mixed bag.
i think at least in some respects, sonic adv 2 has a more going on graphically. technically improved visuals. however, i like the aesthetic of the first game better. i think many agree. some of that appeal i believe comes from the greater number of open areas. sonic adv2 tends to be more cramped and crowded.
Because it runs at double the frame rate and has better textures and animations. I personally like SA1 better than SA2 as I stated in this video, but thats for game play and story reasons.
@@NX6.2 id bet they increased the number of polys overall, and any resources taken from the 'visuals' budget could have and likely did goto more than framerate
I never got into the series, I owned it- just never grabbed me. My biggest interest in it was the never released Saturn build. That would have been impressive
It was a good port, with mouse & keyboard support and the full online multiplayer suite. If you could not afford a gaming PC when this came out, this was the next best thing.
🤔I loved the video but you made a few trip ups in your info. You are a bit uninformed on a few things. Not posting this to be a snarky elitist. Posting to enlighten and educate. 1.) The way you stated this confused me. So I’ll say this. Bizarre Creations did not end with PGR 1. They made 3 games. The game that ended the studio was BLUR and that game really kicked ass. It needs more love. It also has Arcade dna. 2.) A developer once said writing code for the Dreamcast was like using a pen. Writing code for the ps2 was like trying to use a brush. Ps2 may have had more power on paper but the ps2 was hard to develop for. I collect and love ps2. But it’s not the place to go for multiplat. I ALWAYS had a far more superior stable experience on Game cube, Xbox and Dreamcast in direct comparison. Also Dreamcast has so many games running in 480p resolution at 60 fps with VGA support a great deal of the time. Ps2 was ok but 480i 30fps aged like milk. Especially when their 30fps is an unstable one. It WAS NOT the best performance for third party. And Dreamcast was just better because of that fact. 3.) Just throwing this in there. The reason why games especially arcade ports run flawlessly is because Dreamcast was built very similar to the Naomi Arcade architecture sega had. Back in the mid 90’s Arcades were the pc experience. You weren’t getting mind blowing visuals on your home computer. Daytona USA for example came out in 1994. That wasn’t happening at home of unless you were like super rich. So Dreamcast is actually more of an Arcade machine vs a computer based layout. Even the inside guts look like an arcade cabinet on the surface. You mentioned it was an at home arcade box. That is why. Cuz sega was all about arcade so it quite literally IS. And in my opinion it’s a cut above the rest because of that fact. Please consider this. We have many new fans of retro gaming. I think you are well spoken and very articulate with your presentation. I just wish you would teach more. I really think you should do a history lesson on the Dreamcast (other consoles too) and why things are not only designed the way they are but WHY. And if you do you gotta mention segas history with arcades and who they are. It is widely forgotten. And is extremely important to the story of Dreamcast. Just saying. Still love the vid. Didn’t post this with hate in my heart. I just want some of the info delivered correctly. Especially cuz new fans just don’t know of the world that came before them. THANK YOU 🙏
It sounds like you have a lot to say about the video game industry. Any interest in doing a collaborative video with me so you can put your thoughts out there?

Skies of arcadia is one of my all time favorite Rpgs ever
I honestly would say PlayStation Nintendo and Sega all have a place. I love them all.
Looking into getting a dreamcast to add to my retro collection, definitely a memory I'd like to relive again! 💯
Great video with articulate and succinct explanations of why you enjoyed each game! The video capturing was well done too. Subscribed.
you won me over with Tails on the thumbnail
Great list. I would like to recommend Dynamite Cop, Zombie Revenge, and Gauntlet Legends, especially if you find them at reasonable prices.

Tokyo Extreme Racer 2 and Cool Boarders Burn were some of my favorites.
Cool Boarders was on the Playstation. Maybe you are thinking of Rippin Riders?
