The Pistons really started being bad once the Davidson family sold the team to Tom Gores in 2011. He has no idea what he's doing.

Bingo! Gores has been a terrible owner…and Bill Davidson was an exceptional owner. One of Gores worst moves was to leave Auburn Hills and literally blow up the building. So many awesome memories in that building and it’s just gone. And now you have to go downtown to see them which is way more inconvenient.

The REAL first crack in that team was letting Ben Wallace walk in free agency to sign a max deal in Chicago. That team was still very good with 4 of the starters, but they lost the heart and soul of that defense after he left. Dumars failing to replace him is in my opinion his biggest blunder. But yes the Billups trade for AI was arguably one of the dumbest trades in NBA history. You trade a floor general PG who has chemistry with everybody on that team for a ball dominant scorer in AI who didn't even want to be there, set Detroit back a decade plus. Good video!

    • @TTJJCC

Then compounded that trade by burning free agent money in the summer on Ben Gordon and Charlie V. I hated those signings.

Ok…picking Darko was a horrible move. Then as the Going to Work Pistons started getting older…Dumars announced to the league that he needed to trade the core of the team. So everyone assumed there was no value and they were offered garbage offers, and Joe took them up on it. Then Gores buys the team and it’s been garbage since

High school michigander me loved this group. When Dumars gutted the team, I stopped watching the NBA for so long I barely remembered some of the stupid moves made over the years since the magical 04 season. The blackouts from bs regional sports companies like Bailey's killed my ability to watch Pistons, Red Wings, and Tigers, so not having access didn't help. Nuggets are my G league parent team and I get to watch more of their games than I get to see my local squad.

  • @nathanlawson313
    @nathanlawson313 2 месяца назад +1

3 set backs that made the BIGGEST DIFFERENCE since blowing up the champion roster:
#3 - Brandon Jennings injury. Cooled off after viral 50pt rookie game. Came here, and not only got Red Hot again, he was REALLY putting it together. Lead Pistons to 15 consecutive wins. Then he blew his Achilles... Career over. Coulda lead to something special.
#2 - added Villanueva and Ben Gordon.
Charlie V sucked. Then one day on Raptors he erupted for 100pts against the Pistons. Dumars got a twinkle in his eye. Threw the ENTIRE BANK at him, AND 6th man winner Ben Gordon! Neither did a single thing, got cut from rotation, and both got max paychecks to ride the bench.🤦‍♂️
    #1 - Josh Smith
Another max signing. He HATED IT here so much that when team ran a play, he'd cut in front, steal a ass meant for teammate and shoot. Did I mention He was dead last in league in fg%? With nobody wanting him, let alone willing to trade, we cut him immediately... and had to continue to pay his max salary (against the cap) for 5 MORE YEARS!!!

@@nathanlawson313 Great points! Brandon Jennings is a huge “what could have been”, he really was never the same after the achilles injury. I liked Josh Smith as a kid (because of his dunk on Najera), even though he was never good at threes. I feel like he got complacent after earning a big contract. Bad fit on the Pistons + lost passion for the game.

    Part #1. Bill Davidson died
Part #2. Fat-man-Grundy was put in charge.
And sure, Darko, Rodney White, etc. I get it. But really Part #1 and Part #2.
Weaver had to sort that money / draft pick dumpster fire out. And right when he did it they canned him. Williams is a good coach, but when you have that rotating roster you're just going to lose, IDGAF who you are. Pop/Phil/Red F-ing Auerbach couldn't win with that line up.

Detroit air-balled that draft. Melo, Wade, or Bosh would have been justified picks. Wade could have been 6th man and for small ball lineups and would have naturally replaced Rip. Melo for offense to make up for the lack of O from Ben. Bosh could have played F or C and didn't mind playing 2nd fiddle on offense.
That said, Detroit could turn things around with a stable front office and trying to build things up through the draft like OKC and the Spurs.

If the Pistons would've drafted Carmelo Anthony, Wade or Bosh in the 2003 NBA Draft instead of Darko, Larry Brown wouldn't have played any of them that much because the Pistons were a veteran-laden team. Remember when Larry Brown was the head coach of the USA Olympic basketball team in 2004? He had a 19-year-old LeBron James on the team and rarely played him to the disgust of the team and the nation. Brown never liked playing young players. James was the best player the NBA has ever seen at his age. I don't think he was the best player on the USA team at the time, but he was the most talented.
