Darren Ferguson is such a hero to most Wrexham fans. My favourite game was when he scored the winner at The LDV vans trophy final 2005 after 118m of play.

As it's recounted in different places online, it was a manager of the predecessor club, Fletton Utd, Pat Tirrel, who said he was looking for "posh players for a posh squad".

I’m surprised Darren Ferguson was never mentioned on the podcast. The Peterborough United manager is an ex-Wrexham captain and spent 7 and a half years with us. He could have been our manager in January 2007 when Denis Smith was sacked but was overlooked and when Posh offered him his first managerial job instead, he took it. Was Brian Carey chosen instead because he was the cheap option or because he was more a “yes” man to the Wrexham hierarchy, we’ll never know. In any case, we were in a massive slump in form and the players had got too used to losing and it carried on into the following season with our next manager Brian Little and with us being relegated in 2008. It was clear the squad needed an overhaul and we just didn’t have the money at the time. Would Darren Ferguson have turned us around and prevent us dropping into tier 5 and would Rob and Ryan have bought the club if that happened? Again, we’ll never know. I certainly hope Darren Ferguson will get respect and not abused as he was a brilliant servant for us. He scored the second goal in the 2-0 extra time win in the LDV Vans trophy final in 2005 (equivalent of today’s Bristol Street Motors trophy) and for a long time that was my favourite day supporting Wrexham until we beat Boreham Wood to secure promotion in 2023.
Peterborough United away will be another big test, just like Bolton. They’re experienced at competing at the top end of league 1, if not getting promoted. Even if they do tend to sell their best players, they keep replacing them and continue to be a strong team at this level. If we can avoid defeat, I think that would be another good result.
