  • A short review of my new car - a 2005 Mk5 VW Golf GTI, which I bought a month ago for a tenth of the price of a brand new GTI. I firmly believe that this is the best, most well-rounded driver's car you can get for the money.

    Makes me so sad i sold mine and moved to a wrx. Tho I fell in love with wrx's first, the guy is right... mk5 gti was the perfect driving car in every aspect possible. Comfortable ride, plentiful tuning options for ludicrous power to weight ratio, handles twisty roads like a champ on proper suspension setup, never ever broke down, steering was insanely smooth, the smile was always there when I sat for my commute. (+slap a nice 3" high flow catted downpipe, blow off valve, and milltek cat back and the noises are a symphony to the ears. also a neck breaker) I miss it so much :'(

    I love my MK5 and it's dual clutch (not for the purist i know but i'm quite lazy) is amazingly quick and only occasionally gets it wrong when not sure if it should be changing up or down a gear. Damn i brought mine three years ago and it wasn't 3000 quid (i wish it was) but having very low kms i was happy to pay twice that. I've only ever replaced the battery and tires and that neat feature that alerts you time to get a service is so handy. Be safe man.

    I owned one of these for a few years. Stage 1, downpipe, struts and springs, running around 230hp. 150k-180k miles I ended up burning my wallet. I believe I spent around $4000 in a year just to have it run. Endless misfires, cold start start misfires, electronic codes were also endless. I own an Abarth now. But I will say, the ride, handling, and amount of power was my favorite of any hot hatch I've ever been in. If money weren't an objective I would have kept this as long as I could. I just couldn't spend more time getting towed somewhere, spend a grand, then it still never running correctly. I checked oil regularly, changed cam follower every oil change, had over 4 well trained vw/audi mechanics, and it still wasn't enough. I'm not trying to hate on the car or anything, just putting up my experience with one. If you have questions or anything, feel free.

    Agree with everything and I do like golf hence why I'm saving for a mk5 now but for 3k I think a very good choice would be a 2002civic type R just as quick and reliable, practical and not expensive to run, it might be older but if you look there around the same milage as a mk5 golf gti, great review

    • @shona5512
      @shona5512 5 лет назад +1

      Type R is limited by the fact that it's not turbocharged. Stock for stock, the Type R is better, it handles brilliantly and although it has slightly less power, there's no latency with it as it's N/A. But because the GTI is turbocharged, it will respond better to cheap power modifications. Downpipe, exhaust, intake, injectors, fuel pump, intercooler, hybrid turbo & tune will see the GTI around 370bhp. To see figures like that in an EP3, you're going to have to turbocharge it on top of the existing mods to the Golf. After that, you would have to build the engine on both cars to push it even further, as they're both near their factory limits. Simply put, you're adding in one extra step, just to stay on par with the Golf GTI, and that extra step is very expensive, which means the GTI is better bang for your buck.

    Get the carbon cleaning done, verify the cam follower is replaced on the FSI, tensioner done on the tsi, a good service record, and you have a solid buy as long as you don’t care about the interior plastics peeling. I miss my MKV but I love my MK7.

However, living in the Isle of Man i found the second hand market for a golf gti a little inflated and I ended up going for an mark v r32 instead. Man I wish MK5s went for 3 grand here in the states. I got mine a few years ago for 10k and even now they still sit at around 8-10k for one in good condition and under 100k miles (mine had 75k miles). It’s an amazing car though. It’s practical, fun, not too stiff, not too soft, it feels very low to the ground when you’re sitting in it, the engine has a nice deep tone that sounds good even for a 4 cylinder, and it’s got a ton of room for the size. I’ve easily fit 3 other people in my GTI no problem. I mean if you want a little more excitement, you can go stage 2 or 2+ (hpfp upgrade) which will get you to around 280 hp and it basically perfects the car imo. It legitimately pulls and gapping people sitting in the passing lane on the freeway couldn’t be any more satisfying.

    • @JackScarlett1
      @JackScarlett1  5 лет назад

      Could not have said it better myself mate. Props to you for grabbing a GTI when theyre so expensive in the U.S. Stay gapping fools 👊

    • @Bazzookie
      @Bazzookie 5 лет назад

      Jan Prokopenko it’s stage 2 plus 280 hp and around 3000 lbs. it’s light enough and makes enough power to do a 0-60 (or about 0-100) in about 5 seconds and that’s on the stock turbo. Put a K04 on it and you get about 330-350 hp. I have a friend who had a MK5 gti with a K04 and tune who beat a 2017 mustang GT at the drag strip. Stock isn’t slow at 6.4 seconds 0-60, and making a GTI fast is easy. Power numbers aren’t everything. It’s weight that matters a ton as well.

    • @Bazzookie
      @Bazzookie 5 лет назад

      Matthew Eck ☹️ that sucks man. Repairs from the dealer are expensive. I do all the repairs myself so I don’t have to pay thousands at the dealer. My cam follower failed prematurely and destroyed the pump and cam timing housing. I bet if I didn’t fix that myself I would’ve paid 1000 in labor at the dealer. And thank god I didn’t get my parts from the dealer. They charge almost 4 times more than what you can get them online for.

    • @Bazzookie
      @Bazzookie 5 лет назад

      Matthew Eck I wanted the R32 but it was out of my budget. They’re easily the best sounding V6 imo. Also, those engines are damn near indestructible.

  • @99Lezard99

    There is one thing that the gti doesnt have for me. Fun, character, driving feel, emotion. I worked at a VW audi dealership for about 7 years and i have driven lots of gtis audi s and rs models. And i never caught myself wanting one. Of course thats down to personal preferences wich are based mostly on subjective things. But the more modern they got the less Involvement i felt driving them. Power is nice but Power alone doesnt satisfy you for long. Power gets boring and you get used to that quickly. I like having my throttle body connected via a simple cable, i like having my steering assisted by a hydraulic system, i like having to rev my engine and get rewarded for it. I like my steering to feel agile and communicateive. In short: this gti feels to artificial driving wise. Its boring in a long run. Id rather have a little bit more harsh suspension, less comfort and less soft touch plastics but more driving feel more Involvement. And yeah about that reliability ... sure a gti is not as bad as an Alfa but its also not a Toyota so its certainly not bulletproof.

    Today new hot hatches are all very good dailes with adaptive suspension. But until mk6, GTI had no competition at all, it was always the perfect balance between practical comfortable car and fun little sporty car. I chose to buy mk6 myself, because I think the upgrade in the interior is huge and worth the extra money. It looks better from the outside too.
