One of the pros of the black halberd is that it is found early on in dragonburrow One of the cons of the black halberd is that it it’s dropped by black blade kindred
Thank you for this info; I found a Swordspear on and older playthrough and loved it, and wanted to try a Swordspear Playthrough on a new character, but that drop rate is low enough to be tedious to farm for. Anywhere that might be better to farm it is worth checking out!
@@Ranylyn glad I could help, lol it’s funny I didn’t realize at first how close the weapons were for farming until I happened to start at ng and kill those guys in weeping peninsula.
@@doomstadt2371 I’m not sure if people found them rare, just realized they were so close to the starting area and much easier to get than those in Caelid by that putrid avatar. I think most people overlooked having them in inventory, at first at least especially those of us who started the game late lol not knowing much about the game at first.
It only affects counter-attacks, meaning the enemy has to be in an attack animation for the talisman's boost to activate. And it only affects thrusting attacks, not all pierce attacks.
Of course, that also makes it a very nice weapon to use when being summoned. It's basically a stronger Golden Vow! Unfortunately most people do prefer Golden Vow's flexibility with weapons, so it's not too uncommon that you'll run into a situation where another summon has already used Golden Vow, and you have to either override it or accept a slightly weaker buff... /w\
Historically speaking halbert's were the best weapon back in the day before guns. They had reach they could Pierce armor and they could chop off limbs or a head it was a very effective weapon
3:26 you forgot to mention that the ripple crescent halberd has an interesting interaction with greases, because Blood Loss build-up, Poison build-up, Sleep build-up, and Madness build-up scales with arcane, the ripple crescent halberd can be a really great for status build up
@@funkymachine and still the vulgar one has only the bleed, maybe there is someone that doesn't want bleed, maybe it wants sleep or poison, it's more of a flexible weapon that just focusing on bleed, like for example, putting a sleep grease at 60 and 80 you would get at 105 and 109 sleep build up per weapon buffed
I did that on my first playthrough. Double guardians with keen and blood flame infusion, with bloodhound step, insane double poke and jumps dealing nearly 2000 or more
I need to play this game more.. I spend around 100 hours split out on 3 characters.. I never finished the game. But it's the most fun I've had in a game for ages, and I don't even like souls games.. That is just a testament to how well crafted this game is 👌
@@reeanimationgaming1034 he is referring to the final stages of the game, which I think are excellent. Haligtree and Farum Azula were incredible. It's worth finishing imo.
A unique property you forgot to mention about the ripple halberd: Blood, poison and sleep grease buildup increases depending on your arcane stat when applied to it. This is especially devastating in PVP where you can proc sleep on an opponent in only two running R1 pokes.
I can’t not powerstance halberds, you get massive damage, a badass move set and you get to use some of the most hardest hitting weapons in the game. 11/10 highly recommend for anyone looking for something new and fun.
I beat the game using almost only halberds and I have to say they are one of most fun and versatile weapon classes, and I'm glad that you have done a very well made video going over all the halberds with careful detail.
Idk about he halberds but I do know that the ice katana (dragon scale?) With that katana I can stun lock enemies with the AoW! If you want to try it go to prayer room, sneak up on the guardian and just rinse and repeat the AoW of it! Devastates certain enemies! 💯
As someone who used Dragon Halberd for the majority of my playthrough I felt that the buff length was fine. It is long enough to proc frost on an enemy, and overall adds hundreds of damage to a short burst of attacks. The fact that rebuffing the weapon is as easy as attacking again, means that if anything it seems due for a nerf.
@@leonardfairell3397 oh yeah, if you're talking about the Dragon Katana then idk anything about it. I equipped it and tested the weapon art and wasn't impressed, so i never upgraded it to the point where i would actually use it.
Something you forgot to mention about the Lucerne: Every one of its attacks does pierce damage. It's probably still a poor choice for halberd play, but you can get that much more mileage out of the spear talisman (high poise with a hyperarmor AoW could make you a trading god).
For my own reference: Dragon Halberd + either Glaive or Nightrider looks intriguing. I don't play much with buff builds, usually because buffs require reapplication, so this may be the build to try that playstyle. A bit torn on whether Glaive or Nightrider would be a better companion, but Glaive is lighter so that may be what I go with first, even if that's not what I'll ultimately stick with. Probably will come down to playtesting. Ripple Crescent + Vulgar Saw also looks fun, or Ripple + Dragon Communion. I really liked the Swordspears my first playthrough, so doing a build more focused on one of them with Jellyfish Shield is definitely something I'm open to trying.
I think the video desperately needs a final conclusion in the end, highlighting the few halberds that clearly outshine others in terms of AR or scaling in certain infusions etc.
did my first playthrough with the swordspear. back then EVERYONE slept on that weapon, but I loved it. its good to see it being praised now; like an old colleague has become successful
I used Loretta’s War Pickle a lot in my first run through at end game. I was running Strength/Int build with a particular focus on frost spells. This weapon was pretty good and I would often use it if I didn’t feel like using the heavy thrusting sword (frost). I like my long reaching weapons.
I did a quality build with the dragons halberd, two handing it, and it was absolutely mental when you buff with golden vow and commanders standard, and the lightning scorpion charm and Alexander's shard. It's actually insane, and did great damage on into ng+6
Thank you very much for the great vid. I appreciate the hard work. These take a lot of time and you have Game Con. So again, thank you for the great vid.
The best thing about the ripple crescent halberd is because it scales in arcane, it also does crazy build up of weapon grease like sleep, blood, and poison. Which is pretty fun to play around with.
A litle thought for the golden halberd is with the ash of war, it's a lot easier to activate mid combat, so you could use the incantation before the fight, and when it runs out apply the AoW instead
first weapon, "good default AR but poor scaling making it much better earlier than later" next sentence "150 points in its scaling attributes makes it great for late game and NG++" ????
Well if you wanna use it, you need something for it to work. Something else would do better, but if that weapon you want specifically, then you need those stats to make it "good" for ng+
Great vid, love this weapon type. I started off as a vagabond and just fell in love with the range. Updated to Dragon now and having a blast close to endgame.
I played through Elden twice, and both times I ended up running dual Guardian's Swordspear with Thunderbolt and a melee oriented ash. I ran 12 faith for Bestial Vitality and Flame, Cleanse me via the 0 weight Frenzied Flame Seal. It didn't actually end up as a "jump attack build", though I did use the jump attack quite a bit. Literally every single attack in the dual GSS kit is useful. It's such a well designed weapon.
I'm loving these videos, but I think one major way to improve them would be to not repeat things that you've already mentioned several times in the video. I find you repeat things in slightly re-worded sentences very often in these videos and considering they are already bordering 30 minutes, cutting down on that would be nice
Love this! I have been waiting for the new video in this wonderful series and boy does Fextra deliver - there was no better choice for a weapon class! Your Halberds-featuring builds are among my favourite. Thank you! Someone has already written this in the comments, I think, but I would love to see a video about your own favourites among weapons, spells and playstyles!
Dragon halberd has bonus damage vs dragons. 10-15% I think according to the wiki. It does lightning damage which is bad vs the many many lighting dragons in the game but is probably ok against other dragons due to doing standard/pierce dmg. I imagine it's still bad. Commander's standard also buffs mimics and allies. If your friend isn't using sacred vow to overwrite it then 20% dmg/negation on your summons and ally means it's like 80%/80% overall. The downsides are the long cast time and fp like you mentioned and it's kinda not great for your own dmg. I was thinking vulgar militia saw might be good against dragons when you're not allowed to use a horse (Farum Azula) since you can't lock onto their legs. But if its range is short that's a huge downside.
Awesome work as always!!!! You motivate me to play more hahaha Mu suggestion for next videos: . Bows are the best weapob . Your personal top 5 favorite builds (based on OP or just fun) . A series of characters build! Darth Maul, Thanos, Hulk, Wolverine, etc.
I remember dragon lightning was buffed a lot at some point, so I wonder if that effect on the Dragon Halberd was also buffed. If so it might be S tier now.
It was. He doesn't go back and update his videos, I'm sure, but in case you're wondering: the base cold lightning buff was buffed from 130 to 160, and it now lasts about a minute instead of only 20 seconds. I've actually been using this halberd myself this playthrough. I really like it. The frost build-up is near as strong as bleed build-up, and completely wrecks fire-based enemies, like magma worms.
I'm still working through my first play through if the game and I've used banished knights halberd for the whole thing. Its not as powerful as other weapons but it's just something my brain latched onto and have loved as I now approach defeating Maliketh. Good solid weapon. 👌
Do you know what would be cool to be added? Pollaxes as a weapon class. I know the lucerne exists but there should be more pollaxes. The 2 handed R1 should be should be some attacks with the axe part R2 should be some thrusts The running attack be similar to the running attack from ds1 of the halberd but with the hammer part. Backstep attack should be a attack with the hammer part from the side that combos into 2 handed R1. Roll/crouch attack should be a attack from the bottom with the hammer part. Fuck unrealistic shit like dual wielding attacks and 1 handing one
It's dropped by the black blade kindred which isn't too far into the game... Um.. yeah.. you just have to beat the black blade kindred.. very easy early game..
I love the guardian sword spear, but its unique R1 attacks have deceptively short range, despite the weapon itself being far from the shortest. If I need to hit something a little farther away, I just use the jumping R1 instead as it is the default downward smash attack of other halberds, making better use of the sword spear's actual length.
Surprised you didn’t mention the counter damage on Lucerne. Enemies in active frames of attacking become vulnerable to pierce damage. Boosted further by spear talisman. It’s my favourite weapon to throw endure on.
I feel like the power stance moveset on halberds needs more love. Especially with the poke moveset. Commanders standard main hand and currently babished offhand. You have a decently quick and flinching stab light, a great paired roll attack that closes you in if you roll out and has good poise damage and just good damage generally. Same goes for the jump attack. If you are outnumbered you have massive stager and very wide swings on your power stance attacks (running L1 is a standout) you also have a good damage cc jump attack with your jump R2 and a really generous swing with the rolling R1. Basically you have a tool for every situation at the cost of a slightly awkward wind up. In souls games I've heard scythes called trickster weapons and wanted to use them because that sounded like a cool idea. Scythes failed to offer this in er, but halberds succeeded with flying colors.
i think FromSoft dropped the ball with the Lucerne...it could of done Pierce and Strike dmg.
2 года назад+3
This time, the title is actually correct :) I beat the game with dual halberds (and rekt malenia with them!) and am currently melting face with halberds in PVP =) Especially the "stabby" ones like banished knights
Forgot to mention the pest glaive has a special passive that increases damage negation. Not generally applicable but as its the only weapon that does that, it's worth mentioning.
Is it just me, or is the comment on how the Guardian's Swordspear is an excellent weapon with the thunderbolt ash of war remind you of how the Nameless King from DS3 used a swordspear that had the exact same weapon art? (the DS3 equivalent of an ash of war)
The Commander's Standard really shines when you're using it like a commander - with other troops. The 30 FP cost is really worth it if you're using something like the Greatshield or Mausoleum Knights because then you're buffing the attack and defense of 6 units for 30 seconds. They also make the longer casting animation less of an issue because they're pulling aggro while you buff _EVERYONE._ My first playthrough, I used this along with the Jellyfish Shield because the thrusting attack allows you to make the best use of its superior range and poke for HUGE damage. That shield also lets you have an alternative buff to attack for yourself for just 5FP… _and both buffs can stack._ As I had buffs on my main weapon and shield, I would occasionally swap out to a staff in my main hand at range, because I had a shieldwall of units to tank damage and pull aggro while raining down magic on opponents. Add to that the fact that the Terra Magicka spell and the Magic Shrouding Cracked Tear _ALL STACK_ with the previous buffs, and you have a build that will justify a bigger investment in more FP. You can deal with anything quite handily, and it takes _zero_ investment in Faith or Arcane. For me it was ideal for a start as a Prisoner focused on a Str/Int build that lets you really leverage melee, magic, & summons.
My first run and full clear run is double halberd. Generals buff off hand. Banished or night's main. Their power stance options of attack cover every situation. The back step double thrust, crouch double slam, power stance chain, and quick single pokes give you an option for every situation.

Do you know what would be cool to be added? Pollaxes as a weapon class. I know the lucerne exists but there should be more pollaxes. The 2 handed R1 should be should be some attacks with the axe part
R2 should be some thrusts
The running attack be similar to the running attack from ds1 of the halberd but with the hammer part.
To me , all gargoyle weapons are trash in my opinion
Thank u for this video, this is way to good of a video
I think spears are much better option
Spinning weapon on vulgar saw is silly
Red Halbred scales much better with blood infusion than the Banish Knight halbred.
i think FromSoft dropped the ball with the Lucerne...it could of done Pierce and Strike dmg.
This time, the title is actually correct :)
I beat the game with dual halberds (and rekt malenia with them!) and am currently melting face with halberds in PVP =) Especially the "stabby" ones like banished knights
Forgot to mention the pest glaive has a special passive that increases damage negation. Not generally applicable but as its the only weapon that does that, it's worth mentioning.
First
Please update your videos about weapons and do more , after 1.8.1 everything changed
all hail the guardian swordspear
If you say OP one more time I’m going to report your channel to the FBI
Did someone count how much times "elden ring" been said ? kekw
I use your videos as white noise
I don't think the word Unique means what you think it means.
thrusting R1 is my fav type of R1, so simple yet so effective
Is it just me, or is the comment on how the Guardian's Swordspear is an excellent weapon with the thunderbolt ash of war remind you of how the Nameless King from DS3 used a swordspear that had the exact same weapon art? (the DS3 equivalent of an ash of war)
Perfect Video ! Thanks ! Im from brazil =)
Welcome!
Where's the golem halbred
Did Asmon ever learn to use Ashes of War with his halaberdos?
The Commander's Standard really shines when you're using it like a commander - with other troops. The 30 FP cost is really worth it if you're using something like the Greatshield or Mausoleum Knights because then you're buffing the attack and defense of 6 units for 30 seconds. They also make the longer casting animation less of an issue because they're pulling aggro while you buff _EVERYONE._
My first playthrough, I used this along with the Jellyfish Shield because the thrusting attack allows you to make the best use of its superior range and poke for HUGE damage. That shield also lets you have an alternative buff to attack for yourself for just 5FP… _and both buffs can stack._
As I had buffs on my main weapon and shield, I would occasionally swap out to a staff in my main hand at range, because I had a shieldwall of units to tank damage and pull aggro while raining down magic on opponents.
I just took a great axe, leveled only str and trivialized the whole game.
You can farm the guardian spear from literally any of them
waiting for straight sword.
The weapon that carry me to the end.
Lucerne is 🐐🐐🐐
I so wish Commandant Standard got a buff...
I wish we could choose if we want our Halberds to have slash or stab R1
I beat the Tree Sentinel at SL 10 as the Confessor.. got the Golden Halberd and haven't looked back since..
My first run and full clear run is double halberd. Generals buff off hand. Banished or night's main. Their power stance options of attack cover every situation. The back step double thrust, crouch double slam, power stance chain, and quick single pokes give you an option for every situation.
