You should make a black flame death mage build. I feel like the two magic types would actually complement each other and blend well style wise 😉👍
Hey guys I’ve got some really great news to share with you, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died on a cross and resurrected on the third day so you may all have eternal life. If you believe and repent of your sins and put your faith and trust in Him as you would a parachute jumping off a plane at 25000 feet up in the air, He will give you eternal life in heaven as a free gift and I promise you, He will change your life forever as He did mine. He is the ONLY way to heaven and He loves you all. Please think deeply about this with urgency because this is your eternal life and soul, you don’t know when you could die, meaning you could die at any moment, so please consider this with all your heart. If anyone tells you that Jesus isn’t the only way, they are lying to you and they don’t care about your future. Thx for reading.
You know what I've learned from watching RUclips? Every weapon is the best weapon in elden ring.
🤣
I mean, with the right build, they could be the best
There are a LOT of “broken” builds and “OP” items too 👀😂
lmao
That's why everyone of these videos say the weapon type is the best in elden ring
The duality of the Noble's Slender Sword: when you don't want it, it will be dropped by the second enemy who carries it. When you're trying to farm it, it will take no less than two hours.
The monster hunter community calls this the desire sensor.
I did a playthrough where I got two NSSes, and beat the rest of the game, buck naked, only using them. Godskin Duo and Malenia were not easy. Farming took a while, but it was kinda zen after a certain point.
This is the truth of the world.
I literally got it and the nobles estoc from two back to back enemies while just trying to show a new player the ropes
I sold it in the shop during my first play thru.
I remember the gold blade but I wanted twinblades so I sold it for extra runes.
I wish it had a signature move
I absolutely love the moveset of straight swords. Powerstance is just very satisfying, imo
Yeah, straights are my main weapon in every playthrough. I only switch to something else for specific situations.
Most of the time the best weapon moveset is usually the most basic one. Straight swords have been a fan favorite ever since the first dark souls.
Yup plus stand off is super fun and is on most basic straight swords
Obviously you never tried powerstance curved swords if you really think straight swords are satisfying xD Hahaha cringe dude..
Its a bit TOO vanilla for me, it can never keep me excited for an entire playthrough. But then again, I often fall back on greatswords, and theyre pretty vanilla too…
Don't apologize for taking your time man, the updates messed your plans up so you had to work on it more than you expected.clear and informative, it was a great video as always. Thank you!
Totally agree, I feel like content creators shouldn't feel as pressured as they do to upload quickly. Not only does that make the video worse if it's rushed but it's not good for the creators, I think every youtuber has their own pace and working at that healthy pace is what's most important to make good Content without working yourself to death. Great video btw
No. Bad. Wrong. Hammers!

@@teamhop Please shut up.
From an straight sword main, this are some of its pros:
>The ash of war "square off" of regular straight swords is unique to straigh swords, the heavy attack of this ash of war deals 40 poise/stagger(the same as hammers and colossal swords fully charged attack) and can stagger most bosses on 2 or 3 attacks if you are quick enough. The light attack of the ash of war breaks enemy shield guard.
>When dual wielding, It has a quick move set(like katanas) but scales with strenght, which is a good option if you like fast attacks on an strenght build
Starting another plathrough and this is exactly what I needed to know to go all in on this build
If dual wielding with 2 Noble Slenders, would it still scale with strength even though the weapons scale with Dex?
@@hookedonphoenix736 dual wielding alone has nothing to do with your stat focus. It's all in what you decide to do with the whetstone and ashes to suit your stats. Like you CAN make a bastard sword keen. Even though it's not built for that, you're free to flip the script and make it work if you want.
You can change ashes/affinity to make any weapon scale any way you want. If you're asking if that's the meta for said weapon, that's an entirely different discussion.
Sometimes going against the grain, to make a weapon do the mechanic you want but maintaining the moveset you enjoy is exactly what makes it the best for you.
People beat these games with nothing but consumables, so anything is viable if you're determined enough.
@@bouncerblake Thank you. I appreciate the explanation.
@@hookedonphoenix736 no problem. It took me a LONG time to get comfortable with that idea myself. I generally like quick weapons that hit hard, and that's tough to find. Funny that, at least in the early game, I think Carion Slicer, which is a sorcery and not a weapon at all, is the best example of this combination.
As far as dual wield, you have to absolutely love the L1 moveset, or it's just not going to carry very far. I've had a lot of frustration trying to find ones I like enough to use long-term and it often depends on what kind of openings I left myself with, and wound up favoring thrusting swords (and I think curved swords also do this) that allow charge attacks to cancel into a feint with a press of the dodge before releasing the attack.
Regarding Last Rites on the Golden Epitaph. It's actually kind of amazing for dealing with undead. The weapon skill applies to ALL weapons, which means you can cast the skill, switch to something else (DMGS anyone?) and get the +100% damage against undead on the switched-in weapon. Kind of bonkers in practice. No other skill/spell/item does this, so the weapon becomes kind of unique if your goal is dealing with undead. Plus Carian Filigreed Crest can reduce the cost, making it a good alternative to golden vow for longer dungeons.
I get it's niche, but the thing is fucking insane with sword of night and flame, as last rites buffs all 3 damage types it does, and adds holy on top.
It works perfectly with quality builds that use int/faith instead of str/dex, as I think it also buffs spells/incantations, but I could be wrong on that.
Man ever since Dark Souls 1 the humble Longsword has always carried me through. In both DS1 and DS3 I used a sword and board longsword build all the way through the game (Dark Souls 2 changed the move set on the longsword, so I went colossal weapons in that game). Same with Elden Ring, though I swapped out my longsword for the Night and Fire when I found it. Even when it was nerfed, Night and Fire carried me to the the Elden Throne.
I’m with you. First play through for me is always longsword and shield. It gives me the most “pure” experience of the game. Successive playthroughs are when the unique weapons and spells come out.
No doubt about it. The Workhorse of the entire game.
Longsword is bae!! I too was sad that they changed the long sword move set in DS2 :(! Missed that R2 thrust! (Actually hardly any straight swords had a thrust in DS2, shame really). Although I did bump up to LKSS in DS3. Also played around with the broadsword. It’s shorter and no thrust either, but dang it can be a little beast! You can get off a lot of swings for less stamina. Caught a lot of ppl off guard in PVP using fire broadsword early game DS3 when I start pummeling them in a barrage of slashes and fire damage. Fun stuff!
I started as a confessor because I knew I would go for some holy knight build. Got the brass shield ans lordsworn's straight sword at the very beginning. Those 2 weapons carried me to the end. Barricade for one and holy infusion for the other. I later added the hammer (also holy infused) to my arsenal (and a seal). I now know I will take the epitaph for NG+/DLC in case of undead.
How can you make a straight sword video without mentioning the Square-Off ash of war. This ash is absolutely bonkers. It staggers almost all bosses in two casts and does crazy damage. The first time I beat the game I just spammed this ash over and over and it never failed
Square-off's heavy attack does as much stance damage as flame of the redmanes
I agree only straight swords can use that AoW and its amazing.
broadsword square-off is the only way I ever managed to kill the grafted scion at the beginning of the game :D
@@syn010110 easiest way is pick samurai and take off your clothes and only use the bow. mighty shot all the fire arrows and finish off with basic arrows
@@Andrew-kt3eq yea but thats lame af
For a stagger build with strait swords, an ammazing (and really fun) choice is the stand off ash of war, the light attack is amazing for blocking enemies and the heavy attack has great damage and insane stagger damage alongside an incredibly low fp cost
So glad this series is continued!
Sword of night and Flame you could also look at the Golden Order Seal for Int+Faith scaling incantations or the Gelmir Glintstone Staff as another Int+Faith scaling staff that boosts Magma instead of Death sorceries. (could even have both Golden Order Seal and Gelmir Glintstone Staff as a Pyro+Magma caster that will get really good mileage out of Flame Grant me Strength)
amazing idea
12:25 when you dual wield it they have a unique jumping light attack
And a unique running R2 where you thrust with both swords for long reach
My friend and I got the coded sword very early this in the game by using the trap chest to the capital. We abused the fall damage immunity that critical hit animation gives and we explored parts of the capital way earlier than intended 😅
I played the last third of my first playthrough as a Str/Faith spellblade with incantation infusions and one handed a Square Off Longsword. Just something about a single sword knight taking on the world did it for me. Loved it so much I made it a point to finish off the Elden Beast with a Square Off R2.
Yay!!!! Thanks for sticking with it and delivering this long-awaited video! I’ve watch the whole series more times than I can count. They are my favorite series of videos on Elden Ring.
Don't sleep on St. Trina's sword (pun very much intended). I ran it on my black knife build paired with a lightning misrecord, free staggers and crits all over the place.
Broadsword is awesome.
It may be short, but packs a punch and looks cool.
It can be infused with basically anything and most weapon arts, making it very versatile.
Yeah square off + broadsword can carry you through the game on a str build. I just beat malenia for the first time with no summons/cheese, and I used powerstanced SSs. Very satisfying.
Sadly today's gamer only uses the best of the best, meta, optimal, top tier, whatever term you chose. Straight swords may not fill those terms but are some of the most user friendly weapons in the game with varied move sets of slash and pierce, high damage for the swing speed, and low stats. Some players may love that an ultra, GS, or other weapon can break posture and give big status but I often watch them play and they take a ton of damage either from trades or poorly timed attacks. Straight swords are work horses that allow very good damage for the investment and risk that are overlooked for flashness or potential gains. I'll always have a solid one in my inventory.
You give me joy everytime I see these videos they make me want to keep playing elden ring just because of the moments like this
I used the crystal sword for most of my first and current playthrough. Being able to stab and slash was invaluable to me. And the ability was great for knocking down bosses. Pressing it twice resulted in a combo. I don't know how to really play still, but that sword really helped me
i love the lordsworn straight sword it has such a simple design but still looks beautiful and using it on my spellblade build was some of the most fun ive had on this game without a doubt my favorite straight sword
For me the humble longsword magic infused for a Carian knight build, start wretch, keep dex and str at ten use the longsword, carian knight set and shield. Enough cary weight for the armour and the carian staff then all into Int and mp of course. Kinda just a mage overall but still love it.
This is a great video! You laid out the information in a very easy to digest way
I recently started a new game to do a knight build and ive been having a blast i love how some moves literally dodge or somehow block attacks sometimes. i also like how you can go from slashing to a poke it’s great
The noble slender sword is ideal for mages, since you require no stat investment as an astrologer to wield them.
The confessor is one of the best starting classes in elden ring because starting with it allows you to get two broadswords right at the start of the game
LET'S GOOOO I WAS WAITING FOR THIS!!!
Can’t wait for the Dagger in Depth. Love these videos. 🙏🏾❤️
awesome content, man! Love it
will there be a flail video?
From my experience with from software games. A buffed Up quality straight sword (lothric knight I’m looking at you)with reach can be downright scary. Maybe even more so than ultra greats
This is such a good content! Please make spears guide, please please!
Regalia of Eochaid is my favorite, looks sexy can be acquired early and the dancing blade ash of war looks sooo cool and can be very strong with the right talismans. I started a new min/max build just for that weapon.
Literally just got it and I really like it
Lordsworn straight sword, two handed, using the square off heavy attacks to stagger frequently. I also switched to including the Ornamental Straight Sword and tempering them and then going to town with the rapid attacks.
Thank you. Happy holidays
Hell yes!! I've been anticipating this video since you've begun making weapon showcases! Thanks Fextra!
Babe wake up, fextra uploaded a new weapon class review
A simple lordsworn sword and wooden greatshield combo is a low stat tank that can deflect a lot of attacks, guard counter, square off and critical hit a lot of mobs for a good chunk of the game. Pair with the HP Regen talisman to mitigate the chip damage.
Broadsword is by far my favorite. The sweeping heavy attack makes it easier to break poise, especially in boss fights. Sacrificing piercing to have a sweeping heavy outweighs the reach and dmg type limitations.
Why?
Golden Epitaph is a really good fallback option. Well worth the detour in Altus to pick it up.
If you use the two-fingers heirloom you don't even need the faith investment. It's easy to upgrade to a decent level with spare somberstones and then becomes a solid option for dealing with undead when you're in catacombs and whatnot. Furthermore, the buff is actually really useful for buffing damage sources other than the sword itself. A really clean way of dealing with Death Birds, a lot of the time, is stacking a few buffs, this included, and then tossing a holy water pot or two (make sure it's the "weak version", not the one that takes the ritual pot) on their face. The damage is frankly ridiculous
Love these breakdowns so useful for designing build to my playstyle.
Please could you do spears next time :)
Happy to see these again
I can't wait for op fists, take how ever long you need, these vids are amazing
Broadsword is THE best if you use Square Off since the strong attack of Square Off is a pierce attack.
Square Off R2 is always better than a regular R2. You get greater reach and greater stance damage.
Also, if you need a last quick R2 to pass a close stance breakpoint against a boss, a wide swing gets better tracking.
For your crits, for the love of the Greater Will, soft swap to your Misericorde!
Amazing explanation Fextralife
Thanks so much
Sooner I'm going to start playing Elden Ring, hope before DLC launches
THANK YOU so much for all the hard work on these videos. I love this kind of content and it literally takes away anxiety i get playing fromsoftware games. I love the souls games, but I get extremely OCD about which weapons to choose and how I allocate stats. To the point I spend hours just swapping weapons around.
Also I love the coded sword. I just wish it did more damage. The unblockable blade weapon art is amazing.
spear video next? loving this series btw
The way I have made my main favorite character. She wields the Sword of Night and Flame with Miquellan Knight's Sword. With Glintstone sorcery, Golden Order incantations, Fire Monk, and Dragon Cult. Vigor, Mind, and Endurance are around the thirty-forty range. The main focus is STR/DEX/INTEL/FAITH, which is in the sixty range, with Arcane at thirty.
I was wondering when another “weapon is op” guide was coming out. Hopefully we can get them all before the end of the year but I feel like that might be asking for too much
Been waiting for this.
One my favorite things about swords over others, the fact they work amazing with EVERY OTHER weapon with them in off-hand, where op set up is sword and hammer l1 and r1 hit alteration combos
I use the Lordsworn's Straight Sword for a large portion of my playthrough. I play wretch, so my stats are already what I need to equip it. The two stats I prioritize in the early game are vigor and item level, so I wont be able to equip anything with higher stats for a good while. And the default skill on it, Square Off, has cheap mana cost with tons of poise damage, and good damage in general. I also 2 hand it for more damage since I'll be saving any smithing stones that I'm not using on this one sword on whatever I replace it with.
But the Carian Knight Sword is prettier than most other straight swords
Thank you. Was looking forward to this comparison and it did not disappoint. I particularly liked your recommendations on how best to utilize each of the weapons.
Just a good ol' Longsword is just so reliable in every game.
I love straight swords because the have the most reliable and simple moveset/ stats. They are generally fast, light, and good at most things, but dont particularly excel at anything most times. Perfect for general purposes when you dont have a specific build setup or know what you want to specialize in yet on your playthrough. I used them a TON in this game, and had a good time, however I hoped for a bit more variety on damage types and even just aesthetic. There a couple dope ones (like N and F) but mostly theyre all pretty bland. However design wise, i think this was intentional to incentivize using different weapon types, as many new players would likely glue to theyre fav straight sword the entire game. (this happened w the Irythll straight sword for me in DS3. Was sad they didnt have one in Elden Ring, however i believe the incerand hatchet was meant to take this role, which was smart on the devs part to bring more people to axes. This is just one example
I used to have int scaling sword in my second arm as a pure mage. Quite good against weakest of enemies like zombies or finishing mobs early.
Thank you for all the hard work. Have a great holiday.
Not even a heart lol
Sword of Night and Flame is my favorite. It's the magic sword that kicks ass!
I just got the Sword of Night and Flame. Working on getting the stats to use it.
I like to stay more on the faith side because buffs but magic is also nice.
I made the mistake of selling the Broadsword early on, but the Lordsworn Straight Sword is still serving me well in my weapon loadout
Square off is so underrated. I never see anyone talking about it. 2-4 hits with it will stagger almost anything.
Prefer Katanas after about 230 hours, but did a good chunk of NG up thru Placidusax with a pair of Lordsworn’s cold/blood which was fun.
Powerstanced Straightsword are surprisingly OP
Thank you for going so in depth now I want to try out straight swords
When are you gonna get to the rest of these I enjoy the in-depth guides and I am also very new to Elden Ring and like the help
I use Golden Epitath as my critical hit weapon to back up my Giants Whip, since they both want the same stats and whips cant critical hit. Last Rites is useful to have when fighting undead as a bonus.
Babe wake up, another fextralife elden ring video just dropped
Here because of sword of darkness from the dlc which buffs holy damage by lowering enemy holy damage negation. Basically needed a good weapon to dual weird with it. Coded or miquella sword seems to be best options
Faith/int straight swords like sword of night and flame or carian knight sword are also great in the primary hand with an incantation focus in the offhand.
I've got a spellsword int/faith (faith is the main stat with int just high enough to wield the weapons) build that rolls with this combo, and it's pretty flipping fun.
Yay straight swords! Been waiting on this one. I've gotten a surprising bit of effectiveness out of 2x Warhawk Talons with fire grease and Spinning Weapon AOW on main hand.
Trina (left) + Eochaid (right) is a nasty weapon combo.
Buff the left, swap to dual wield, and hit the weapon art when they sleep.
Dirty lil bastard
Edit: *I LIKE IT*
What armor are you wearing @26:35 ?
You can reach level 150 before ng+ considering rune farming spots. I was way past that level when I entered ng+ on my original character
The straight sword is a great standard weapon. Might not have all the cool powers of every other weapon in the game but you can't deny that it gets the job done. From beginning to end, you can't go wrong with a plain and simple sword.
550+ hours in Elden Ring and just today i got a weird barbed spear that causes bleed. never seen it before. one of the reasons i love this game
Sword of St. Trina was absolutely broken in my spellsword playthrough. My mimick tear summon would blast bosses with sleep while I threw rocks.
You're the man. Thanks for all you and your team does!
I feel like it should be mentioned the the Warhawks Talon has the highest Dex scaling of any Straight sword
I've been running dual straight swords with a staff for most of the game and its really fun. Hard at first even with the carian knight sword but extremely rewarding and versatile as you level up. Currently level 190 in ng+. I've also maxed 2 nobles slender swords and 2 lordsworn straight swords and while I use the nobles slender sword more it's kinda just to flex and the lordsworn feels better.
As a burgeoning mage, of eventual fame and also one that is playing my first souls game - I find the straight swords in Elden Ring a most effective ally in the vicious combat that I regularly face as a young gravity user. I believe a smart mage is one that is able to use a sword and shield, as well as spells, like the bone-shattering gravity magic. But truly, I do give enemies a knock over the head with thee ole' staff, from time to time; Mainly as a form of annoyance.
I got two warhawk talons just going through stormviel. Doubt ill use them though. They look cool but i prefer the thrusting l2 attack
I love the sword of night and flame but honestly I went through the entire game just using lighting spear incantation
Hoping to see a Gold Mask type incantation only build
Thanks. Worth the wait.
I haven’t tried a straight sword build yet and need to try one.
On one of my playthroughs i discovered that the straught sword exclusive "square off" ash of war actually does quite a lot of damage and very high poise damage with its heavy attack version.
Was running a strength build with a claymore with piercing fang actually, but a heavy broadsword with square off comes pretty close in damage when uding the ash of war skill primarily.
It's a bit awkward to use but quite viable.
I'm furiously scratching my head trying to refine my spell blade build. I'm dual wielding lordsworn straight swords with spells on the side for range. Trying to figure out how to maximize my damage output or switch to other and better straight swords. I had to change from the cold infusion to magic.
The Sword Of St. Trina is my favorite in the game :)
It honestly depends on personal play style or what mode you’re playing. Because if you ask me, if it’s PvE, I’m beating most bosses and almost any enemy from afar as a Faith Main lol. And there are just some people who have that specific sicko finesse with their personal class that helps them overcome the stronger classes.
PvP is a whole different thing though. You’re no longer fighting Bots, you’re fighting people with OP Strategies. So unless you know how to overcome those Strategies with your personal class that might be low tier. You’re dead 9 out of 10 times.
1) You should main Regalia and have Trina's on swap: sleep a tough enemy then bust out Dancing Blade while they take a nap.
2) SoNF works very well with the Golden Order Seal (which scales better with the lower mixed Int/Faith in NG) allowing you to have all four elemental damage types available simultaneously in a very effective manner before Leyndell proper.
Fantastic breakdown, thank you for keeping up with things!
the wrap-up question: "how do you play your straight sword", makes me concerned about the kinds of answers the Internet will have 😱
that said, I love the lordsworn straight sword. great flexibility, looks good, even better w/ the amazing Swordsmanship mod.
Is there a spears video yet, or not made yet?
Great vid series! Is there any chance you might also make a video or guide for the best weapons/ash of war for each elemental damage?
It sucks that the noble slender sword is so rare cus its range makes it one of the best weapons in the game imo
Not sure why you would mention the stat requirements for the weathered straight sword. Every class in the game can meet the requirements right out of the gate.
Pros: They attack faster than other weapons, so u can spamm enemies to death. Cons: They attack slower than other weapons, making them less ideal for statusbuilds. You w0t m8?!
what are the wings you are wearing at 2:22?
Man, I love these videos.
I want to two-hand a straight sword cause I don’t like great swords and the bigger ones, can I do it or is it just more optimal to play duel wield or with a shield?
Fun fact: you don’t need to meet the stat requirements to use shields
My strongest build with Powers stance swords. With buffs 1250 damage is amazing strong with LV 100
