Man I feel like I have to turn off my brain for movies like this now lol because I expected Keith to be a good guy since the movie was pushing the creep vibes.
Mama is not the barbarian. The barbarian is her father who did the horrendous acts that lead to her existence. However, the underlying theme of the movie is about the treatment of women by men, so Justin Long's character is the typical guy that doesn't see how bad he really is, and in the end proves that he is truly a barbarian.
@@AvEnGeD7X238 i dunno how else to explain this but Mama is a developmentally stunted incest rape baby who has a limited understanding of the world. The father and Justin both are uncaring of the horrors committed in the house despite being "regular" members of society. I think of Mama as a neglected feral child, most likely the reason she can't have children of her own (perhaps the Barbarian didn't try to in his advanced age) was because of the neglectful conditions she was raised in.
@@jayvon96 well they changed the movie last minute. Keith was supposed to be in on it but they actually changed it because it was a bit too obvious (something I heard)
People judge him for failure to be meta-aware (for not seeing from the perspective of the audience). It's part of audiences identifying with one character over another rather than seeing both as flawed participants in a situation where neither knows everything.
The look on all of your faces when Justin Long said "she just took some convincing" 10/10, one of the many reasons i will always stay subscribed. You guys are "reel" ones
I kind of feel bad for the creature. Like yes it hurts and kills people but it was made that way. It's not technically the creature's fault, I feel like it just wanted to be a mother but nobody understood because it was scary and hostile. Love you guys' reaction!
It's not a creature, it's a mentally disabled woman with exaggerated physical features for horror sake. Yes, I do too, she's just the daughter of one of his rape/torture victims going by her motherly instincts because she doesn't know better. She literally live-in a dungeon.
It is 100% the creatures fault, no matter what you’ve been through you still kill people, it’s not the creatures fault they were abused but it is their fault they kill people
i adore the way NO ONE ever trusts keith, they did such a good job with building up that character... also, one thing i've seen most people overlook is that tess very clearly states during her conversation with keith in the beginning that she's unable to move on from people and has the tendency to hang around and try to help regardless of anything which kinda does explain her reckless and idiotic choices later on
@@LoXHumaN I started to trust him more once he didn't open the wine until she was in the room. He realized his mistake in making her tea which was super sweet lol
you guys are right, it’s definitely intentionally humorous! zach cregger, the director, is a comedian most well known for being a founding member of the whitest kids u know. it’s also definitely meant to feel like two different movies. zach said that he originally wrote the first half as a short film that would end with keith being killed, then later decided to write the second half and turn it into a full length movie. he said it’s not meant to feel like a traditionally structured film. super fun reaction! :)
I don’t think Tess is dumb, she’s intelligent, very emotionally intelligent. Her empathy and compassion for others was the reason she got hurt, but also the reason why she lived. She got captured because of her compassion for Keith. She got shot because of her compassion for A.J. She lived because of her empathy for the mutant woman. In the end, she killed the mutant woman instead of her allowing her empathy and compassion to get her into further trouble. She learned her lesson.
She also didn't know AJ's past, she just saw him as a human who was going to clearly get himself killed since he wasn't listening to her advice. She didn't want him to have the same fate as poor Keith. I adore her
Tess is…interesting. When they’re drinking, She does tell Keith that she has issues with being too attached to people. She mentions how it messed up her last relationship, and she got the job to get away from her last boyfriend.
I find it ironic when someone tries really hard to be a good person and make someone feel comfortable it just makes them seem more creepy in everyone else’s eyes lol
When someone’s overly nice in this setting, it sounds like they are trying to get something out of you or distract you. Obviously I wouldn’t mind if it were genuine but it’s hard to know it’s genuine in such a setting….bad neighbourhood, you are alone with a stranger, your phone doesn’t work, and the stranger is acting way too nice to keep you there. Alarm bells will be going off in my head.
now realize KEITH was the one who should have been freaked out here, strange woman, bad neighborhood, sketchy story, no way I would have opened the door as a white male with a gun lol. Call 911@@blueshoes5145
Honestly my alarm bells rang mostly because 1) he seems weirdly insistent about her drinking something, 2) he completely dismissed her concerns about the secret basement room, and 3) was very vehemently trying to get her to not leave after she got freaked out. It wasn’t that he was too nice, it’s those little moments of pushiness that are subtle but still present.
A barbarian is someone who doesn't have any compassion for others, and can do the worst , the Barbarian in this movie isn't the creature, it's Justin Lon Character. this movie is really awesome , I went blind on it, it was a big great surprise.
I think Justin long is slowly becoming one of my favorite scream Queens he's in all the crazy horror movies I love it. Justin Long plays a really good creep
He is so good! He’s such a charming actor and doesn’t get the credit he deserves. I had no idea he was going to be in this so I was very excited when you first see him.
2022 has been a fantastic year for horror and this movie was one of my favorites! I hope you guys get to watch Smile soon, it was also excellent and super unsettling.
Definitely has been a good year for horror films. I think the standouts have been this film, Barbarian, and both X and its prequel Pearl. I didn't particularly like Smile. It was stylish but overall left me thinking meh.
Heard an interview w/writer director who said the title Barbarian just came to him out of nowhere. Doesn’t mean anything. I’m sure subconsciously it has some deeper meaning to him and the street name is something like Barbary Way. If anything, the barbarian is the guy who dug the tunnels and created ‘Mama’. Boop.
Two things. a) It was the director's first movie. b) The director made a cameo as the dude Justin Long was talking to in the bar. Really good movie. Made me think of "It Follows" when it comes to the creativity level and it being set in Detroit.
Also, how could they survive in the basement for 40 years? They were probably homeless too and got food from like a soup kitchen or shelter or whatever. And he was probably at the end of his rope what with getting so old. Hence why he shot himself.
@@jennifergrove2368he likely had some his incest victims like the mother scavenge for food and supplies and from other victims or transients from nearby
I feel so sad for the mama. She grew up in a world of pain and loneliness, and the only good and pure thing she knew of was the bond between mother and baby, and she desperately wanted to have that. I feel like in a perfect world she could have gotten help, but her death was unfortunately necessary for Tess to walk free.
Barbarian depicts the real nature of human beings. Its trying to show that its not always the outward apperance of a person thats frightening, but often its the internal malice (Frank) that is much scarier. Thats why the real Barbarian of the movie is Frank his sick and twisted tastes led to the destruction of so many young women.
Barbarian is such a great study in horror film theory. Each of the stages of the descent, followed by a moment of pure terror, then the comic relief and a contrast.
i just wanna say thank you guys for being like actual decent human beings. i feel like other reactors (especially when its a group of male reactors) have some really insane misogynistic homophobic takes when they’re reacting so yea thank
This was prob my fav movie theatre experience in a while like I was so shocked lmao watching with friends was truly hilarious bc of how surprised we were but it was still unsettling & creepy!
I know Bill produced this as well but casting him as Keith was so great cause not only was his acting spot on but we are suspicious of bill cause we mainly know him as a villain like IT so I was so shocked when he died
Justin longs character is so spatially unaware as he’s just casually measuring the square footage so he can get extra money for the listing of the house because he’s so financially fucked, not bothering to take note that “oh shit, that’s not normal, a heavily stained mattress with a camera pointed directly at it with a bucket next to it”, figuratively shrugs his shoulders, keeps measuring. Then he’s literally almost measuring down into the bowels of Hell, passing cages while figuring math out loud in what’s essentially a crawl space tunnel inhabited by a hills have eyes contender. Justin Long NEVER disappoints. 😂 Good movie. I think some people miss it, that Barbarian also refers to the street name where the house is, Barbary St.
RE Tess making poor choices I think they set it up well for her character because she mentions earlier in the film about how she always go back to the guy in her life even though she knows she shouldn't (something like that). They set it up at a similar time as setting up her perspective vs Justin Longs character, she said about how female and male perspectives regarding dangerous sitations are totally different. This plays out well with JL measuring the room and not being instantly horrified. My theories on the mother not disturbing them the first night is that she comes up and explores but she doesn't hurt people. Otherwise if she comes up and takes people when they stay at the air bnb there would be a trail of missing people leading to the air bnb. And my guess is the evil bastard down there forbid her doing anything to bring attention to the house and she's clearly terrified of him. He and Justin are the barbarians. I just love that the film is super unnerving in the first 3rd and then switches to the comedic off the wall kinda commedy horror. Works so well and doesn't feel dissapointing.
From what I took from the old rapist "Dad" in that room when Justin Long's character found him was that as he aged his "creation" took care of him and kept him alive in there. You notice he didn't want to be in there because the first and only thing he wanted was for Justin's character to move the side table within his reach to get the gun and kill himself. He ultimately becomes a victim of his own creation. There was all kinds of food garbage everywhere and the creature likely force fed him too! At least that's what I gathered from that scene. I saw this in the theater with my mom (we're huge horror fans) and we laughed our asses off! We have a bit of a twisted sense of humor so I wasn't sure we were supposed to be laughing as much as we did. The other 10 or so people in the theater never made a peep so I was glad y'all found some humor in it as well. Makes me feel like we aren't such twisted nutcases laughing at shit we weren't supposed to 🤣🤣🤣🤣
It’s so funny the Keith slander at the beginning then apologising him to after cause same that was me lol loved the reaction fir horror are always great especially yours bryce cause your just like me I get so scared lol
I’m from Detroit. I’m an east sider, and Brightmoor is Westside. Everyone in the city knows Brightmoor isn’t just one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the city, but in the entire country. 1000% real place. Google and a read a bit and look at the pictures.
It's called Barbarian because the house is located on Barbary Street. And also because the question the movie indirectly asks the viewer is who is the real villain and barbarian?
I think the old guy checked out because he couldn’t attack women anymore. He was old and sick; his daughter wasn’t capable of giving him the proper medical attention so he was just wasting away. In his condition, he couldn’t scout out any more victims, nor could he assault them even if he found one. I doubt he could even walk to the television to play any of his snuff films either.
Lol loved your guys reaction. 45:59 My thinking of why this movie is called Barbarian, is because of Frank "Carlos", he's the reason for it all. He was the Barbarian, he is the reason that the horror existed. And I thought that the movie being called Barbarian, and how for the first forty minutes you're assuming that Keith is a monster, was brilliant. I thought this movie was Brilliant in so many ways.
Funny story about this movie. So I’m not big into horror movies or anything but I went to see this movie in theaters because one of my friends was really interested in seeing the movie so him, another friend we were hanging with who was kinda interested in seeing it, and me decided to go see it. Not even 10 minutes into the movie my friend who convinced us to go see it that night was knocked tf out asleep 😴😴😴 like he was starting to snore a bit he was that deep asleep. Literally smacked him with my hat, chopped him in the gut and everything. Mans slept through damn near the entire movie that he convinced us to go see 🤦🏾♂️. Now this is an inside joke that we will never let go of 🤣🤣
This movie was really well done it was unexpected and I couldn't guess anything which is really good. She had so many red flags it's not even funny! The first red flag it was double booked ,second red flag the neighborhood the next day when she looked at it, third red flag her boss telling her that that neighborhood is not good.
It's all exaggerated to make a point. Tess in the beginning makes a statement in regards to her ex along the lines of putting guys/people first as a habit that gets her into trouble over and over; That is her compass until the very end. I'm pretty sure Barbarian is referring to the worst levels of manhood/character that we see so often, and the women who are now emotional/physical victims just by living in it. Yea, the monster is a monster, but only at the hands of a man doing as he pleases. When the homeless man said there's something far worse in the house, my horror movie heart was hoping for a creature far scarier, but you realize the homeless guy was just talking about how monstrous the rapist who owned the house is. His barbaric/inhumane actions literally created a monster to the point were he was a victim in some way too. It showcases the effects of a world where men give into their barbaric desires at the expense of others. Men who fully embrace their desires (Frank) - Men who know it's wrong but excuse it conditionally and selfishly. Commonly disgusted more by a violating action's extent, rather than the action in general (AJ) - Men who are consistently trying to do better in navigating a world that other men have created for themselves by attempting to live their life with a healthy (sometimes awkward) balance of desire and foundational respect for all lives, especially for those knowingly the greatest victims of it. People always say "not all men" (which duh - we know) but something like the beginning of this film honestly wouldn't be as creepy if we didn't already know the real possibilities of some men's "natures". It doesn't need to be "all men" to know that it has already been, and continues to be, too many men (something to think about next time anyone wants to use that excuse to belittle actions). I like this film because even in a detail as small as the monster being raised to want nothing other than to be a mother, it's one big metaphor for living in a "man's world".
I love Justin long his such a great actor this whole cast is incredible It's funny because Bill's brother Alexander Skarsgård does mostly romance and comedy movies and isn't married or have kids but his so good looking then we have bill who is cute and does more horror and drama movies him and his wife have a daughter and when she was 11 months Her Room Is Full Of Pennywise Toys. “Her little baby room is filled with all pennywise teddy bears" he said his daughter loves it and seeing her dad on TV. Anyway thank you so much for another awesome reaction.
To be fair, there are many expressions of "barbarian". But technically, mama was born on Barbary St. She's not going to really be known as a normal woman. Sadly. Her father was actually the actual barbaric person. But Mama, was sad and horrifying at the same time. How do you fix it? Beyond a certain point, you can't.
Police officers in this movie needed to be fired it was the most frustrating thing about this whole movie, is when she runs up to the cops and they treated her the way they did!🤬

I used to crush on Bill after seeing him in Hemlock Grove but then he played IT and now I cannot unsee him as that evil soul sucking clown 😫😭
To me, Tess saved Mama. It couldn't have been easy living like that for Mama. Not knowing who she was, what she was, and why she was.
I first thought this movie was going murderous dude. Then when Tess found the tunnel I thought it was going demons from the underworld 😅 lollll
Barbarian = civilian in 476 Barbery
omg yessss!! i’ve been waiting for this one! this was such an experience in the theater. one of my favorite movies of the year!
“Barbary-inn”
Good catch! I didn’t notice until this time watching that she said the AirBNB is on Barbary Street 🤔
Now this is an inside joke that we will never let go of 🤣🤣
Finally watched it the other day, glad to see ya'll's reaction!
Justin Longs character turned out to be the scumbag that we thought Keith was. 😂😂😂
I would just watch this for Justin Long and his tape measure 🤣
justice for mama 😩 she just wanted someone to take care of 🍼👶
The street they are on is called Barbary St., hence Barbarian
This movie was really well done it was unexpected and I couldn't guess anything which is really good. She had so many red flags it's not even funny! The first red flag it was double booked ,second red flag the neighborhood the next day when she looked at it, third red flag her boss telling her that that neighborhood is not good.
I’ve been putting off watching this for so long and now I too am scared 😂
This movie has a perfet 1st act.
I had zero expectations when I watched this movie - since so many "horror" movies usually disappoint. However, this one was a good surprise.
this movie was so funny to me and my sister once we saw the monster😭😭😭
Saw this on HBO Max. Film came out of nowhere - had everyone watching it within a week lol
That's strange how it's on HBO Max, since it's Disney's film 🤔
Definitely one of the most absurd scene transitions in a film I’ve seen in recent memory.
Y’all should watch the Fourth Kind it’s a great movie ❤
I felt so bad I thought it was Keith but he was just awkward and in a weird situation lol poor Keith
I enjoyed it. Thought it was overhyped like Smile, but I did enjoy both.
Thanks, Rob! Thanks, Bryce! Thanks, Zuff! 😨 #ReelTime #ZachCregger #Barbarian
I’ve never seen a horror movie like this 🙌🏾🙌🏾
The guy on the left is super stoned. 😄
This movie was insane!!
I was also paranoid of Keith the whole time... and his death was the only thing that proved his innocence to me. 😂 Sorry Keith
I love Justin Long
Such a twist when I watched this for the first time...
The Mother & The Creeper loves Justin Long's eyes lol.
Hilarious.
Always love your reactions
i alway always jump scare myself, i had to watch a lot of these scenes between my fingers
The name Barbarian is because of the name of the street, Barbara street. You see it in the flashback.
omg i’m so excited for this reaction
I say with with love, I feel like the guy in the middle’s government assigned fursona would be a turtle. He has friendly stoner turtle energy.
Lmfao me and my siblings watched this move just shaking our heads the entire time lmfaooo the MC was making some questionable decisions Forsure
Police officers in this movie needed to be fired it was the most frustrating thing about this whole movie, is when she runs up to the cops and they treated her the way they did!🤬

Bryce's impression at 8:40 sounds like Christopher Walken 😁
Omg YES can’t wait to watch y’all get scared! This movie is a ride.
I hated how compassionate and kind Tess was but in the end its exactly her compassion that saved her
i watched the trailer first and yes it did make u think the second act with longs character came first
I love you guys' reaction. One of my favorites recently. Especially Woo YoungWoo 😅
And I strongly recommend you guys to react to AMC "Interview with the Vampire". Season 1 is over. Only seven episodes and all of them are masterpieces!
Dope OutKast shirt. 💯
Yeah this movie shocked me and terrified me at the same time. Also Bryce’s reaction with Justin Long’s death is me with anything to do with eyes. It’s just a no. Lol. Anyways keep it up you guys are awesome
