  • How to dye your doll's hair with Rit dye. Featuring Lady Diva L.O.L. Surprise! O.M.G & Sheryl Meyer of Rainbow High.
    INSTRUCTIONS
    Supplies:
    Your dolly!
    Dye
    Big bowl or your sink
    Stirring stick (chopstick)
    Disposable gloves
    gentle soap
    1. Start with clean hair. Rinse your dolls hair with water to remove any product. A teeny tiny amount of a gentle soap can be used. I like Dr. Bronners.
    2. Prepare the dye bath. No need to boil water, just fill a large bowl with hot water from your sink. pour out a small amount of dye into the water. You can eyeball it or try this ratio: 1 Gallon to 1 teaspoon dye dilution as a rough starting point and then add more water or dye as needed. The color of the water will look darker than the outcome. You can always dye a test strand but I like to live dangerously.
    3. Time to DYE! With wet hair dip your dolls head in the dye bath and swirl around.
    Dip for 10-30 seconds at a time so you don't over dye. Less is more with this project since there isn't an undo button! When you dip make sure you get to the hair line. You can even face her forward in the water briefly to get the hairline area.
    4. Time to RINSE! After dipping immediately rinse the dye out of the hair. Once the water runs clean you have your final color. repeat the dip again if you want a stronger color.
    5. Done! Just dry and style however you like now.
    TIPS:
    This is my method but everyone has their own way. There's no "correct" way to customize your doll so do whatever you prefer! Different types of doll hair may dye differently. I'm not responsible if you mess up your doll!
    Don't use Rit Dyemore as it can stain the face or body. Stick with basic Rit, the liquid is a lot easier and less messy than the powder! Salt and vinegar are not necessary. The hair takes color just fine in hot water, no need to boil. Read instructions on the bottle but adjust them for doll hair like this tutorial or another's instructions.
    Consider the dolls existing hair color when choosing the dye color. Just like human hair you can't dye dark colors to light colors. You will need to go from a lighter color to a darker color. Such as light blue to brown. Most dolls have paint on their scalp that matches their stock hair color. This paint won't change colors and can sometimes be seen contrasting with the new dyed hair.
    LESS IS MORE! It's OK if it doesn't come out exactly as you envisioned. Even with some precision there are always surprises.

    I dyed doll hair with Crayola markers. Just go section by section and color. I did this years ago. Like 40. We dyed the doll’s hair brown, and thought since the markers were washable it would go back blond. It did not. It went a gorgeous auburn red. The markers today are much more washable, so the color may come out if the hair gets wet.

    Will Rit dye work on Barbie Extra dolls? The doll is platinum blonde and I want to dye it black.

    • @Dollulus
      @Dollulus  Месяц назад

      It depends on what kind of hair she has. If the hair is nylon or saran it will dye just fine. But I think a lot of the Extra Series Barbies have polypropylene hair, which doesn't take dye well, regular Rit dye probably wouldn't work.
      I suggest searching that specific Barbie IE "Barbie Extra 12" on reddit r/barbie and seeing what people say her hair type is. Everyone there is super helpful so if you can't find the answer with a search just make a post and ask. If the hair is saran or nylon you can use regular black Rit dye just like my tutorial. You might need to tone it with some red dye bc Rit black can have green undertones.
      IF the hair is polypropylene hair, you could do an experiment. You might try Rit "Dyemore" instead. BUT the danger about Dyemore is that it can stain the doll's head and body too. If you are OK risking her life, try the black Dyemore. But don't fully dunk her head. Dunk just her hair and then let the dye wick up the hair shafts. I haven't used Dyemore, so I don't know if it needs toning with red.
      Take this with a huge caution! I haven't dyed polypropylene hair and I haven't used Dyemore for doll hair either. I'm just making guesses. If you try it let me know, I would like to see how it turns out.

    Does anyone know if this works on an Our Generation doll? Is there any dye transfer once it's rinsed and dried and when it's washed again at a later date?

    • @Dollulus
      @Dollulus  2 месяца назад +1

      As far as I know you can't dye black hair any other color. You could Reroot the doll in any color you like though!

    I got the regular dye in color dark brown and my hair turned out green 😭do you know if there is anyway to get it brown? Like if i get the dyemore would the color be better? Or could i dunk her hair in just dye with no water? Please help lol!

    • @Dollulus
      @Dollulus  Месяц назад +4

      I haven't tried this myself but I've heard that dying the hair with a red or pink color will neutralize the green tones. I would try that and then maybe redo the brown dye if the color isn't quite right. I would not use Dyemore since it can dye the doll's head and body, and regular Rit won't do that. Don't worry, things will work out!

    How do you dye doll hair like ainsley from Shadow High because she got dark hair.

    • @Dollulus
      @Dollulus  10 месяцев назад +4

      Unfortunately you can't. Like human hair, you can't go from a dark color to a light color. And you can't bleach dolls hair! The only way to get different colored hair for a doll like Ainsley is to reroot the doll.

    • @Dollulus
      @Dollulus  9 месяцев назад +2

      If you use regular Rit dye it will not stain the head (at least for Rainbow High and OMG LOL dolls!) Rit DYMORE, which is made for synthetic fabrics, will dye the head.
      I'm sure there are dolls out there that stain with regular Rit dye though so use caution!
