Designed and built by Arrow Dynamics at a cost of $4 million, the ride officially opened to the public on April 11, 1987.
For the design and construction of Vortex, Kings Island turned to Arrow Dynamics, an industry-leading manufacturer at the time. Construction began in the winter of 1986 on the former location of The Bat, the world's first suspended roller coaster, which was removed after the 1984 season. Kings Island invested over $4 million on the ride, which required 750 tons of steel to construct. The line queue and train station from The Bat were reused for the Vortex. The ride opened to the public on April 11, 1987, and helped the park exceed 3 million visitors for the first time in its history. At its inauguration, Vortex briefly set a few records for full-circuit roller coasters. It was the tallest, featured the highest drop, and had the most inversions with six. All were surpassed the following year with the debut of Shockwave at Six Flags Great America.
Vortex has been repainted at least twice: during the 2001 season and again in April 2009 before opening day. The ride celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2012, and during its lifespan, Vortex accommodated over 46 million riders - ranking it seventh in Kings Island's history as of 2019.
As the train leaves the station, it dips slightly taking a hard right into the beginning of the lift hill. The train ascends slowly giving riders a view of the park including The Beast to the left, Diamondback straight ahead, and the Eiffel Tower to the right. Once reaching the top, the train dips slightly, immediately making a right hand turn into a 138 ft, 55-degree nosedive down the first drop. The train then ascends into a left-banking turn as the track flattens out. After turning roughly 180 degrees, the track straightens briefly before descending into a sharp left turn that takes riders through two vertical loops. Off the vertical loops, the train ascends, goes around a 180 degree turn to the right, and enters the midcourse brake run, which slows the train almost to a complete stop. Next, the train drops off the midcourse brakes into a pair of corkscrews. The second corkscrew passes directly between the two vertical loops. The train then goes through a right hand turn and goes through a batwing inversion, a heart-shaped element containing both a dive loop and an immelmann loop, that inverts riders two additional times. There is an on-ride camera in the dip between the two parts of the batwing. The train then enters its final maneuver - a 450-degree ascending clockwise helix - that generates positive g forces before the train hits the final brake run. A final right-hand turn is made to re-enter the station.

The ride closed on October 27, 2019 while the trains were taken to Carowinds so that Carolina Cyclone could use them as replacement parts.

I libe 2 and a half hours from KI when my family went last summer we stayed in a nice hotel and we could see the drop tower from our room it was great.
I legit went on the vortex when I was 6.

BryceFourn 2001 That's why I love this coaster. It's a classic Arrow Dynamics design. Rough, yet awesome with it's double loop, double corkscrew, and a batwing inversion (or butterfly inversion, I have no idea which is the correct term).

Watched this at home, and I and anyone who knows the Couch Coaster Shuffle definitely felt this one.

California’s Great America’s Vortex was a B&M stand-up coaster until 2017 when it became a floorless coaster called “Patriot”. It was also a coaster that gave riders headaches like this one.

I want to have fun, not getting hurt, and feeling terrible!! I always am sooo grateful for the break at the end before I get off, so I can recover!! Not fun! Feels more like a hospital visit!!

Arrow Dynamics' coasters are truly my favorites. While B&M coasters cetainly have an incredibly smooth ride, I seem to enjoy the roughness of the corkscrew coasters. In fact, my favorite coaster of all time was The Great American Scream Machine at Six Flags Great Adventure. RIP.

this was my first ride with a loop and it was a hell of a ride but i loved it so much. i went on the banshee six times after this lol. the only thing i would say is that it rattles your head a lot on the seat so if you go on it more then once your head could hurt

I wonder why Arrow never figured out that if you switched the track bracing to the inside and put the wheels of the trains on the outside, youd have a hell of a lot smoother of a ride?
Il remember I was 9 and it was my first time on that ride. I yelled "I REGRET NOTHING" through the whole ride.

I have been on vortex and it's my favorite ride in the park with diamond back as a close second. It's a classic arrow looper built in 1987 and I just love it. If you've never been to kings island, diamond back is the parks biggest and tallest coaster, it was built by B & M in 2009. It's really fun and smooth as ice but it can't beat vortex. Every time I go there the line for vortex is the longest line in the park. Diamondback's line is almost as long. If you've not ride it yet, try it out and experience something great despite it being a little shaky.

Michael Morgan Although I am not TheCoasterViews, I can assure you that Vortex is most likely not leaving King's Island anytime soon. The rumor that Vortex is "sinking" is false.

+Autumn Wasemann well I've heard many rumors that the vortex is on a underground lake and can possibly sink. I been to kings island so many times this year to know that's not true but I agree with you.

By hospital visit, I mean when you are leaving the hospital, you are sooo happy to go home, but still feeling terrible a bit, and wishing you had never had to go through that!!! I do not want my rides to be or feel like that!!!

Vortex is one of my favs by Arrow. The ride is only rough because new coasters are so smooth. Back in the 70's and 80's when these were built the didn't use CAD like they do now, so the transitions are rough by current standards.

This is the most abusive coaster(minus son of beast) that I've been on. It beats you up pretty bad.
I just rode it and It was fun, but as a 90 something pound twig, my head was hitting the sides so hard and when we first dropped i lifted up a bit too high for me to feel safe. Guess that added a bit of thrill though.

+fuzzyferretdude vortex is way worse, I got about twice a week and I can assure you that vortex is worse. Beast can be rough depending on the seat but its still fun anyways, vortex on the other hand is just rough and painful and not even fun. I didn't even ride it today because of that
+roberta messham i'm a bit of a masochist when it comes to coasters, i perfer the rougher, more "out of control minecart" feeling rather than smooth flying, and sidenote, my friends and i call the vortex "micky mouse's mafia rampage" because when we were going through a particularly rough part, i looked over at my friend and said "where's my money bitch!?" in a micky voice.

Vortex at California's Great America? The stand-up coaster? Many would beg to differ. Vortex at Kings Island is quite a bit taller and faster with more inversions. I've heard that Vortex at CGA will be converted to a floorless coaster...
