Son Of Beast At Kings Island

- Son of Beast is a record-breaking wooden roller coaster located at Kings Island in Mason, Ohio, United States, outside of Cincinnati. Son of Beast is billed as the sequel to The Beast. The ride was shut down in 2009 due to a reported injury, and has been standing but not operating since.
At the time of its introduction in 2000, Son of Beast was the only wooden roller coaster in the top 10 categories (worldwide) that are typically dominated by steel-based coasters for track length, height, speed, and drop. It was also the only wooden roller coaster to feature a vertical loop, which was removed in 2006 after an incident in which 27 people were injured. The loop was not directly related to the incident, but was removed to allow for lighter trains, thus reducing the chances of the 2006 incident's re-occurrence.
The sign located at the entrance of the ride featured a large wooden box covered with chains, rope, and metal straps. The front of the box is ripped open, suggesting a large creature of some sort tore its way out. The words "Son of Beast" are located in the center of the hole. As part of a marketing campaign for the ride before its début, the same box was placed next to a footpath in the park. Beastly growling and snarling noises came from inside the box and it shook violently, as if something inside was trying to escape. Interestingly, a similar marketing campaign has been used for many of Cedar Fair's roller coaster announcements since they came into ownership of Kings Island and thus Son of Beast, including Prowler, Diamondback, and Intimidator. After it was announced that Son of Beast would close, the box was removed.
Included in its many world records, Son of Beast was the world's tallest and fastest wooden roller coaster, the only modern wooden roller coaster in the world to incorporate a vertical loop, and the second longest wooden roller coaster (second only to its predecessor, The Beast, also located at Kings Island). This second-place record was deliberate, in order to leave the Beast with its 30+ year world record as the longest wooden coaster. Until the removal of its vertical loop in 2006, Son of Beast was also the longest roller coaster on Earth to contain a vertical loop. After its removal, California Screamin' at Disney California Adventure Park won the title.
Prior to the removal of the loop, the ride originally operated with three Premier Rides-designed trains. The trains consisted of 6 cars, each holding 6 people. During the 2005/2006 offseason, the trains were shortened to 5 cars on each train. In 2007, they were replaced with two Gerstlauer trains from the defunct Hurricane: Category 5 roller coaster at Myrtle Beach Pavilion.
The Son of Beast was an impressive coaster, had Kings Island not fired the manufacturer during construction, used low quality wood and rushed it to completion, it probably would've still been standing.
Yea it’s not the coasters fault it’s there
Nighthawk6595 yep if only kings island didn’t.
The original manufacturer that was fired was the one using the low-quality timber and other defects that's one of the reasons they were fired. The problem was the completion was on top of that bad foundation, and the only real fix was to start over.
The people who gave them the wood ripped them off (purposely gave them the wrong wood) that’s why the wood was bad
@@War1109 How could such a scam have possibly paid off?
Funny how this ride only lasted for twelve years, while "Daddy" over at the other side of the park is still going strong, despite running for nearly three times as long.
PunkDemonNeo lol yeah. just rode the beast on Sunday and it's still good as new! 😂😂
because "daddy" was built well. son of beast was build with poor quality wood, maiking it rough and unstable. thats why it closed
freddyy no it closed because someone that’s not very bright decided to stand up at the top of the hill and they fell off the ride and died so they were no longer aloud to keep the ride open
That's because RCCA is a pile of trash.
ella rack that’s not true lmao that didn’t happen
May I use this footage in a video I'm making about the longest roller coasters ever? I will give your channel full credit.
Aye bruh mad respect to you, love your videos but this may not be the right video, it is 8 years old and I don't even think this guy is active in his comments anymore
Yeah sure!
wooden coaster 1 looks too intense for me
Karl Bunge Wooden coaster 1 looks to painful for me
Karl Bunge it’s closed but was so fun!
RTC gp.
wooden coaster 420 looks too s~&t for me
Karl Bunge so happy I got to ride it when I was 8 it was rough but it was a rare experience because it closed 9 years ago
I got the chance to ride son of Beast the year it opened. I loved it despite the somewhat roughness. The layout was cool and it doing the vertical loop is memorable. A revival of the coaster RMC style should be undertaken. Gigacoasters are great. Keep the Diamondback as the only one now. Bring back the Son👺
I rode them both...the Beast was great...Son of Beast.....I got sick on that one XD But what.can I say? It was an exciting experience...especially with the vertical loop!
I always felt that this coaster missing something, if being compared to The Beast. There were no tunnels, you didn't race through the forest and the track layout was very predictable. All of those elements are what make The Beast a truly pleasing experience. It's kinda like watching a great movie over and over and never growing tired of it. Son of Beast was like the movie you had to watch because of the hype, but cared very little to watch again.
Just the first banked curve after leaving the station showed what great lines this coaster had. I just wish some coaster company would find a way to re-build this beautiful beast.
wow what a beauty i wish i was able to ride this
i don't but i want to ride El Toro
It was a piece of crap. Way too rough for a woodie. We rode the ride in its first year of operation. We sat in the front, and were tossed around. My wife got bruises from it. The train had to be made heavier, so it would have enough speed to make the loop. The heavy train caused too much damage to the structure, which caused the structure to crack, and the track dropped. It caused 32 people to be injured. The ride never opened again. Good riddance to bad rubbish!
@@bassduderic Son of Beast: A classic case of "good idea, horrible execution".
Nope you didn’t miss anything
One of my favorite coasters. So sad it's gone.
When I rode this ride I swear to God I could feel my brain bouncing around in my skull. It was one hell of a rough ride.
Apparently the loop was the smoothest part!
@@lauramolony maybe because the loop was the only part made of metal/vekoma
My right ear loves this
Shark Assassin ??
Shark Assassin your funny
@@ArrowThrills **you're**
@@Keiththeking25 ok ?
I never got to ride that. I was disappointed when they had to tear it down. its dad is one of my favorites.
I was with my aunt we were on the very last ride before it got destroyed I miss it
Chayce Gambrell don't think that's true but RIP
I loved the son of the Beast it was one of my favorite roller coasters at Kings Island
Rode this 14 times in a row one day.
8(
Nit Picker they didnt have it when I went yesterday :( but I rode vortex instead!! 2x!!!
Son of Beast was torn down in 2012
Fruity Cutie stupid...
You're obviously fem!
I rode this back in the early 2000's. This ride had alot of hype to it when it first came out.
I rode Son of Beast opening year. Truly a great wooden coaster. Mean Streak was 100x rougher.
I think I broke my back on mean streak
There was a spot on the Mean Streak where you had to lean forward, otherwise the back of your head would get battered on the head rest.
Your neck and brain remembers the shake rattle and roll from mean streak
Or not
R.I.P. S.O.B. Thanks for putting this video up and bringing back the memories. One of my favorites of all time. Amazing power, speed, and forces on this ride. I rode this 6 times in a row without getting off and couldn't take it anymore. We were going delirious from the intense G's in the helixes. Forget all the haters. They just couldn't handle SOB!
Thank you for posting this! It's always cool seeing things that no longer exist.
I am so glad I got to ride this in its beginning while it still had the loop. My opinion is its one of the best wood coasters ever. sad to see it go
Son of Beast was a great coaster. I rode it multiple seasons and never found it any more rough than any other woodie. It is still the most impressive first drop of any wooden roller coaster I’ve ever been on.
My favorite wooden coaster of all time! It was AWESOME!
One of the greatest coasters ever made! Rode it once with the loop!
And yet people still say it was one of the worst coasters ever made.
Which it was
I rode this back after high school. Smoothest ride ever. I remember just a decade back it was still standing sans loop.
Yeah it sucks they demolished. I didn't go on it even once!
Fancy seeing you here
According to a park worker I spoke with while there in 2015, the reason that ride didn't get the RMC treatment was because it received way too much bad publicity for the park to keep it standing. That's a real tragedy as that coaster would've been the perfect RMC project.
Who else thought the thumbnail looked like Mean Streak’s mid course?
This is still one of my top woodies, even though it's no longer around!
I imagine of Son Of Beast was actually built properly. It would've been an amazing wooden coaster.
Safe to say this ride looks like a beast. It looks like it rattled and shook the heck out of riders. It would scare the daylights out of me - I could barely handle the Beast coaster. Very unique loop. Great video
An amazing revolutionary ride.
BEST WOODEN COASTER EVER BUILT
The last time I rode this, I was only about 15 at the time, I can still clearly remember what part of the ride hurt. Watching this video doesn't display the sheer amount of centrifugal force experienced on the lower portions of the tilted curves. The pain I experience was that force pushing me into the seat and then being roughly bumped around while under high G's. It was extremely uncomfortable and it took my knees a good 10 mins of "walking it off" to feel back to normal. I remember being very upset not because of the pain, but because at that moment I knew one of my favorite rides was in trouble. Sad to see it go.
Rode this ride many times, never experienced the "rough" ride others complained of. I would rate it as my favorite (before they took out the loop) coaster, followed closely by the original Beast. Sad to see it gone.
the beast is amazing too
I love this ride I've got on it 2 times but that first hill and that loop ain't no joke bruh they was so scary definitely the first hill
I miss this ride
I loved this ride!!!
This was a legendary coaster. Wish they brought this back and done the tight way
Rode it one time and it still had the loop, what at crazy ride. It's beyond the scale of man to do that with a wood track- now that's what I call a thrill ride folks!
I remember when I rode this it did not have the loop but it was still fun it was amazing and it was my first hyper coaster
This was a beautiful Woody that, unfortunately, left riders bruised and uncomfortable. For me, I got to ride it twice on one afternoon, I can attest to the pain of riding this awesome beast, but it hurt way too much afterward. The loop was the LEAST of it's worries. Why they took it out, I'll never know. The loop ran as smooth as silk. But we all got battered and bruised by this giant. I miss it. I would ride it again in a heartbeat!
They put lighter cars on the ride in an attempt to stop the splitting of the wood from the force.... but the lighter cars could not make the loop.... I rode this the day it opened and it was smoother then the racer and beast if only it could of stayed new
I will miss The Son Of Beast everytime I went I rode it so many times in one day to many times to count. Then I rode it so many times after that I loved it so much. Even though it's being replaced nothing will ever top it as the best wooden roller coaster that I loved to ride every single time i went. I am so sadden that it is gone :(
This coaster did hurt, but didn’t stop me from riding it
Looking at the construction crane still being up, I'd say this must have been one of the first rides. Looks pretty like a pretty smooth ride, then. It would be nice to see this re-built properly to take the loads. It looks similar to the old Crystal Beach Cyclone coaster, in Ontario. It had the reputation as being the wildest ride for a long time. I got my baptism on coasters on The Giant Coaster at Paragon Park, Nantasket Beach, Massachusetts. It was the tallest coaster until I think the Scream Machine, down in Georgia beat it. But I've yet to have a coaster, and I've ridden a lot, give me the wild, out of control feeling that coaster did in it's 4400 foot length. The Park was sold in the mid 80's, and the coaster was moved to Six Flags in Maryland, and now goes by the name The Wild One.
VERY smooth ^w^ I'm going this weekend, let's see if it's open! Also, I went Halloween 2011 and the station was opened... I saw people getting pictures taken in the queue line but I couldn't see what was going on. BUT sadly the ride was STILL closed.
NICE VIDEO
I worked on that ride for two years, got to meet Nick Lachey! Got to check his lap bar lol.
That ride was the talk of the playground when it opened. It rammed you like a Jack Hammer, but it was so much fun.
Be Cool If RMC Turned That Into A Hybrid Coaster.
Banshee actually looks really good don't be hatin on stuff that you havn't even ridden
I miss this coaster.
I'm happy I had the chance to ride Son of Beast with the loop, I rode this on my 6th grade trip to Kings Island in 2003 cause my teacher forced me to get on lol. Kings Island shouldn't tear this ride down, it's too great and fun. What would be great is if they turned this into like a new Texas Giant (a steel wooden roller coaster) so they could put the loop back, I'm thinking about writing a letter to Kings Island about that.
i miss this ride
I read the description just cause it’s more information on the ride since it got taken down before I ever had the chance to ride it but I seen diamondback was on there....ITS STILL GOIN TODAY the one ride I’ll never get on because of the freaking 215ft drop I found out about!:)
I rode it twice, the year it opened and then again a few years later. The first time was great, second time was ROUGH. My friend, sitting nearer the back, didn't ride anything else the rest of the day because her neck was so sore.
God that looked like a slick ride shame I never had a chance to ride it, of course if it wasn't shoddy craftsmanship itd probably still be running
my right ear really enjoyed this video
Randy West Rode Back of Roller Coaster Train on Son of Beast EST. 2000-2009 on Last Year Son of Beast Open in 2009 at Kings Island in Mason, Ohio USA 🇺🇲.
I get so sad watching this. I remember how fun this ride was, and I loved being able to boast about living only a half-hour away from the only wooden coaster in the world with a loop. Just a few years after they destroyed it, my brother would've finally been able to ride it, which is similar to how they got rid of King Cobra the year I was finally tall enough for it.
Christian Vennemann how tall did you have to be
@@maxifam For King Cobra, I think you had to be 54 inches. For Son of Beast, I think it was either 48 inches or 54 inches.
Christian Vennemann thx
@@maxifam No problem! 👍👍
Damn no king kobra?!
It was a very good ride:) I miss it soo much though
Reminds me of Meanstreak at Cedar Point.
It was a very rough ride, but I'm so glad I had a chance to ride it. KI needs to step their game up with the Gate Keeper opening up at Cedar Point
Well, in my opinion, The Beast is the best wooden roller coaster ever, because it is the longest wooden roller coaster lasting an amazing 5 minutes. I think it's cool that they both broke records, both wooden, and both came from the same park. True, it wasn't called The Son Of Beast for nothing.
Son of Beast was ahead of it’s time
i knew that was coming hahaha. its cool though since you're a fellow CP'er
I have only been to Ohio once, and that was Cedar Point. I have never been to Kings Island, so I can't speak too much for the park. However, it wouldn't take that much money to make hybrid track (steel). They could have brought the loop back, and made it as smooth as diamondback for example... Idk. This coaster looks fantastic, It is a giant! I wish I went here to ride it...
I wish it was still there, despite looking forward to Banshee.
My Dad was lucky enough to ride once with both designs, loop and no loop. Wish I could of too.
Grew up in Northeast Ohio and never been there. Always wanted to but when I was a kid me and my brother use to bother are parents to take use. They would say why would we travel 4 hours when Cedar Point is a half hour away. That sucked. Now I live in Alabama and don't get up there to often.

Wish it's still there. Nothin beats a woodie i tell ya!
This actually was my first roller coaster I ever rode and I was so sad when they closed it down
i missed this ride so much i am glad you uploaded this video because it was a fun ride and it had to have idiot people that dont know their limits ride it and get it tore down. because of death and injury its torn down because there was a ton of people who should not have even gotten in the line :/ but thank you for uploading this
Rode in 2000 or 2001 with loop. Unreal!
I rode it in '02 & it was dope...I loved it!
desperately need a POV of this ride for a video I am working on - this is the best out there! Any chance I can use some footage with credit?
Yes go ahead
The accident happened as the coaster was going up the loop. I rode this 4 days before the accident happened. It was a big news back then. Then The Banshee took over the spot.
r.i.p son of beast you were my first kings island ride.. :'(
Wow, looks like it was filmed just after it was built, considering the crane. Plus it's with the loop and no brakes. Nice find.
how did they switch from one type of track to another
i rode it, glad i did, it was rough enough to give me a little bit of a headache though...but hay what an impressive ride
Thanks thats what i was thinking of. Iron Rattler and New Texas Giant are the two ik of.
Record breaking for how rough a rollercoaster ride could be. Shutting it down was the best decision they could've made, because sadly it wasn't exactly safe.
I hope one day gravity group or rmc will recreate it
We can only hope.
Might be the first wooden rollercoaster with a loop
RIP Son of Beast ;-;
You know its good when the train mounted camera is shaking
I rode it when the loop was still in place. Best. loop. ever.
I rode on this bad boy 10 times in a row back in 2004 during a party.
So 0:55 is the crazy bump that caused the most damage and the shutdown, but it doesn't appear to be that rough in this video. Actually the whole ride seems a lot smoother in this video than what I remember.
Great ride but damn it was rough
When I went to KI for the first time I was too chicken to go on this, and now that its demolished I'm sad I never got to ride it :(
Can we use some parts of this footage in our new video? with full credits! Thanks.
Go ahead!
That lifthill makes Steel Vengeance sound quiet af

The racer is now the hardest to ride in the park in my opinion. I rode the beast and was fine but when I rode the racer I couldn't help but get my back slammed repeatedly into the back of the seat. It. hurt. So. Bad.
I kinda wish this was still around despite the roughness though... Just to see what it was like.
I don't feel pain when I get off of the adventure express. When I get off the racer I feel like my back is broken. Thats the difference that I've experienced.
I think Vortex is the roughest ride at Kings Island. I was so sore the last time I rode it and it was the roughest ride on a roller coaster I have ever been on.
Vortex sucks. I kinda want to ride it a second time, but I don't want a concussion. The racer is rough too; my side was hurting after that ride.
yesterday I rode the vortex and I regret it. something needs to change on that ride because I get a headache for the rest of the day if I go on that thing. the seat hits the side of my head so hard. you'll either have to be shorter than the seat or taller than the seat to experience no to little pain
Needs some treatment from B&M, and the racer needs some treatment from RMC or GCI
May I use this footage in a video on Kings Island's history? I will give you full credit.
sure go ahead
Thank you so much. And kudos to you for possessing such rare footage and uploading it for all to see.
I miss u the son of the beast
2 questions . . .
Have you ever ridden Millennium Force? Do you know what air-time is?!
You spend half the ride floating above your seat, the other half pressed against it flying down the hills and through the curve.
Every row and seat on the train is great, but go front row of the 6th train -- 6 full seconds of air-time on the first 3 hills.
How did they get the loop to work? Is this a steel hybrid?
the rosebowl is the large circular motion you pass through twice before hitting the brake run before the loop it is also known as a helix.
