They are not great because of five Grammy Awards. They are great because they sing the struggle of the people of South Africa. Ladysmith was singing to help break apartheid not get Grammy Awards. White people perspectives are crazy.

Joseph Shabalala is Christian and this music is a fusion of traditional Zulu and Christian gospel musical styles. To young black South Africans, this was their parents' music, as old-fashioned and outmoded as the blues is to young black American fans of rap/hip-hop etc. LBM's enthusiastic reception surprised and dismayed young black South Africans. But the music's basic simplicity, sincerity and goodness have sustained it despite its detractors and allowed it to outlast more transient fads.

I heard this a few years ago at the Peekskill Paramount. That night they found out they won a Grammy during the intermission and came out and sang the South African national anthem. I had brought my dad to the concert because Ladysmith is something we bond over, and because when I was growing up the end of Apartheid was the world issue I was taught about first. Both of us were teary blubbery messes. I have so much affection and gratitude for this music.

What a beautiful memory you have to cherish. Wish I had been there.
About 20 or 30 years ago I think, I hread them for the first at a free public concert.
I worked for American Express at the time in what was known as the World Financial Center (WFC) (where the 911 tragedy occurred in NY). WFC used to give free concerts for employees and the general public on a frequent basis. I believe at the time they were largely unheard of in America and possibly the world. I feel blessed to know that I saw them at what I believe was one of their very first American concerts. The audience, like I, had no idea who they were or, for us, this new and wonderous sound. I, and I believe, thousands that were at that free concert, became instant and lifelong fans!

Joseph Shabalala had a series of dreams of Zulu
Isicathamiya harmonies, which lead him to forming LBM.
They’re on tour right now, perhaps you can approach them? I’ll be seeing them when they come to my city next month. I’m so excited!

Thank You to the organisers of World Expo88, who brought the group to perform on the Riverside, despite the apartheid in South Africa. Their voices and melodies keep me captivated, even now in November 2022. So long Joseph the group leader.

      African Anthem????

    • @KatJalbert
      @KatJalbert 7 лет назад +1

Unless I was mislead... I was told this is the Nation Anthem of South Africa:
      South Africa Anthem Text
      Nkosi sikelel' Afrika
      Maluphakanyisw' uphondo lwayo,
      Yizwa imithandazo yethu,
      Nkosi sikelela, thina lusapho lwayo.
      Morena boloka setjhaba sa heso,
      O fedise dintwa le matshwenyeho,
O se boloke, O se boloke setjhaba sa heso,
Setjhaba sa South Afrika - South Afrika.
Uit die blou van onse hemel,
Uit die diepte van ons see,
      Oor ons ewige gebergtes,
      Waar die kranse antwoord gee,
Sounds the call to come together,
      And united we shall stand,
Let us live and strive for freedom,
      In South Africa our land.
      Is this correct?
