Have you ever felt like you were dead and theres nothing you can do about it but wait for it to take you? Thats what we felt. Fear wasnt even an option. We had just accepted what was going to happen. Luckily, it went over us and didnt take us. It literally went DIRECTLY over us.

I was an only child raised by a single father and when I was like 14 we lived in Massachusetts. The lights went out and we lived in the middle of nowhere so I remember going into my room and falling asleep and my dad fell asleep on the couch. We both woke up to the doorbell ringing and banging on the doors and all the windows. I woke up my dad woke up and when we went to the door and there was a perfect path cut through all the trees
Right up to our house and continued into the backwoods. It was neighbors and the police trying to see if we were okay. We slept through 2 back to back tornadoes. It apparently hopped up over our house because we had no damage just trees and limbs all over the place but no property damage as for as structural. My dad parked his car in the garage so his car was untouched by any flying debris.

I grew up around Dayton, Ohio, about 15 miles from Xenia...the 1974 tornado is one of my first memories, I was barely four, but I clearly remember Mom and Dad talking about it, attending the funeral of a friend of the family, and the whole thing left me terrified of tornadoes as a kid, in the way some are afraid of clowns...I think it shocked everyone so much that the normal reaction was overreaction, with new sirens and weekly drills, it left a mark. Over time, my fears dissipated a bit and were replaced by curiosity...and eventually, just indifference...fast forward until I'm 23 or 24, bowling in this huge tournament in Kansas. Bowling alleys are a lot like casinos...no windows so that you'll stay focused, lose track of time, spend money, etc. So after an eight game block, me and the guys I traveled with went out to get the van and go for lunch, but when we walked outside, it was like a atomic bomb had detonated...the van, gone, as was every car in the parking lot, every building around us...a tornado had literally bounced around the downtown area and took everything, accept the bowling alley. This was way before cell phones and with the tournament and the noise of balls and pins, not one of the thousand or so inside had seen or heard anything...it was like the tornado knew I had lost my fear and it came to give me a little reminder...oh yeah, we eventually located our van about five hundred yards away, in a ditch, by the side of the main road...

I live about 30 miles away from Washington, IL. I remember when that tornado hit, it was a regional heartbreak. The storm that caused it was a cold front, so we went from 40 degree temps to below freezing. It rained that same night the tornado hit, so everyone's house that was destroyed was totally wrecked beyond redemption with the freezing rain accompaniment. I helped a few homes reclaim some things. I've done my fair share of gawking but never have I tried to physically fight against the winds of a tornado. During the LR tornado I saw so so many videos of people getting on the roof of like 10 story buildings to get photos and videos, it's insane, it gets worse every year.

Not only was she alone in being sent to school which I thought was awful but our teacher was this proper evil idiot woman who was clearly enjoying this. (I know know it as narcissistic supply) she made poor Claire stand up in front of the class and tell us about it. None of the kids were comfortable with her being made to do that but this nutter teacher was clearly loving hearing her describe how grandad fell asleep with a cigarette and burned to death then burned the house down. I hated that teacher for the way she carried on before that... After that I figured she was some kind of evil person. I was right...

I m from the town of Washington, IL. I can tell you seeing the destruction of the tornado in a video is nothing compared to standing in the middle of it. Walking down a street where you knew each house and then seeing nothing resembling a house, just wood, insulation, etc is scary. I am amazed how our community came together immediately to help each other. Literally, digging through debris to find people, driving or walking to a family or friend’s house to make sure they’re ok.

I live (as a always have) about an hour away from the Washington il tornado. I was young at the time I didn’t know much about tornadoes but I was at long John silvers about 30 minutes south of Washington and that was my first experience. With that I learned more about them and always wanted to chase them. Back in April 2023 I actually lost my house in a tornado I have it all on video and I never thought the first tornado I saw would rip my house apart

I woke up that morning(living just a few blocks from all the damage) coming off an acid trip and heavy edible(weed edibles) trip to my sister, screaming and yelling with her boyfriend trying to get all 6 dogs and 2 cats contained in the basement, with no clue what was going on.
That was a fucking insane day to live so close too. My house was fine, but about 4-5 blocks over was the worst wreckage I think I've ever seen(outside of 9/11 clips)
Years later while working for a lawm care company, I was working in that same area the tornado tore through.
I had Google maps satellite view pulled up while I drove from house to house, and got this weird feeling as I realized I would look at my phone, see all brown patches in front of the homes, then look up to green grassy yards.
I zoomed the app out some more, and realized that the Satellite view was using older photo's, amd could actually see the full path the tornado took through our town.

I always wondered why you guys build paper mache houses when this weather is not only possible but even in some places common, then again looking at some of these I very much doubt solid concrete structures would matter. I sit and used to love watching Tornado videos, it is something I will never see in real life and only videos but I think maybe after this, I will most certainly view them in a different way. Those poor people in that house on the second clip, that was raw. Seeing videos of people telling you how "cool" the tornado is as it is miles away and passing, thinking wow id love to see one of those etc is one thing but that.
Now I will watch videos and think about them, it will certainly make me have a different view. Every house and every place the thing passes, are people like them :o(

Man vs nature, nature wins. An EF5 tornado is taking out anything it hits. They're basically unsurvivable unless you are underground. And an EF4 isn't too much different. It's utter destruction. That's why it doesn't make sense to create a category for EF6.

We sheltered about 2 or 3 miles away in downtown, but when the warnings hit just 20 mins prior, we were having lunch in the area that it wound up touching down in.
