10 Licensed Games That Were Actually Quite Good

- Опубликовано: 23 авг 2023
- The idea of video games as tie-in products goes back all the way to the seventies but, more often than not, there was one big downside to the practice of licensed video games: they were almost always awful. However, we know that just because MOST licensed games are bad certainly doesn't mean they ALL are. Some of them are pretty decent actually, and a few are all-time classics. Here are 10 Licensed Games That Were Actually Quite Good!

Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue!
Scarface: The World is Yours
X-Men Origins: Wolverine - Uncaged Edition
Missed oportunity from the writter to not make Peter say "Woo-oo" everytime he said Ducktales
Woo-ooo 😂
7 times he said it
Plus point for the writer not to use such an old joke

Chronicles of Riddick ain't too shabby either
I'm extremely surprised "Mad Max" wasn't on here
For real! It was so fun, and true to form for the movie franchise (as well as A Boy and His Dog) to just play as this completely amoral human gray area who feels nothing for the most part. He just sort of... does what he does, when he does it, and doesn't think too deeply on it. Except when he DOES and he regrets giving a damn immediately. That particular apocalypse would certainly have that effect.
we need a sequel to this where The Warriors gets some attention. it's a bit older, from 2005, but still pretty damn good for the most part
All excellent entries. The Godfather: The Game and Scarface were also great games based on movies.
another significant bit of trivia regarding DuckTales Remastered: the game would turn out to be the very last time Scrooge's original voice actor would play the character. He sadly passed away around the time it released.
AVP2, The Punisher 2005, and The Chronicles of Riddick Escape From Butcher's Bay were great too.
JUDGE DREDD ACCLAIM SUPER NINTENDO
Scarface
The punisher (2005) was amazing and still hold up today crazy how good that game has aged. One of my very favorite PS2 games
Mad Max not even getting an honourable mention is disappointing.
There are probably more than a hundred games worthy of this list. Cutting down to ten must have been tough.
@@DanoLefourbeYeah, I get it.
Mad Max is one of my favourite games ever so I always set my expectations too high. 😂
0:18 I did not expect a cameo from Brian Zane's hands.
Talking soap and talking pool cue, back together, they're the best of friends!
PS1 Spider-Man was the videogame turning point for the series.
I rented King Kong to win a contest for Old Spice to get a free copy of Contra if you got a thousand gamer score in a month. Very glad I stumbled upon that hidden gem.
A standout to me is Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei back on the NES based on a novel by the same name. It eventually exploded into a massive franchise of games completely eclipsing its origins.
That and "sweet home" a top down japanese game based on a movie of the same name that lead to inspire the resident evil series.
My favorite licensed game is the first Battle for Middle-Earth. I don't even like real-time strategies, but I do when they take place in Middle-Earth and simplify the mechanics.
Hands down the first thing that came to mind. I play through that game 1-2 times a year its good!
I've never heard of the King Kong game definitively going to check it out. I couldn't believe Street Fighter the movie the game wasn't number one haha
When I got me a ps2 again on a fleamarket a few years ago, this king kong game was one of the first few games I got me for the console again, cause it really is surprisingly great.
when I got me a ps2 again on a fleamarket a few years ago, king kong was one of the first games I got me again for it. It's kinda surprising how good a king kong game is where you barely play as kong. A risky move yet one that paid off quiet well. Freakin love the atmosphere.
Way better than the movie it was based on.
I remember playing the king Kong game and reaching the TRex level (you know which on I am talking about) from there I fell in love with the game. It was just very good. It has a dark aesthetic but contrary to many games that tried it, here it works just fine. I only saw the movie after finishing the game and it wasn't as good as that gem.
We live in a world where we can get a Dark Forces remaster, but can't get a Simpson's hit and run re-release...
Transformers War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron should be a duel entry in a part 1 list.
Oh hell yeah the Transformers Cybertron games are the best of the best
The ps3 was home to several overlooked gems. The captain America game, Wanted, and warhammer 40k spacemarine just to name a few.
Star Wars isn’t lacking for great games. My favorite was always TIE Fighter.
Open Season and Back at the Barnyard for GBA. Those are quite good, original gameplay, and fun despite being licensed.
animaniacs the great edgar hunt and Wallace & gromit's great adventures from Telltale Games underrated gems
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
No Buffy the Vampire Slayer on XBox, no DS9 The Fallen on PC/Mac, no Star Wars Revenge of the Sith on PS3/XBox. I take personal offense with this list.
Also the buffy sequel game was great!
The Warriors (based on the late 70s movie) is very good. It is a 3D beat em up that also includes a very good 2D beat em up..
One of my fav ps2 games
The Tiny Toons Game on Genesis and Chronicles of Riddick were two great, great Licensed Games.
King kong was an amazing game.
Never played it, but they should make a game about Skull Island
@@yuvraj01 well tbf, that kinda what this game was actually about, surviving on Skull Island, with occasionally being King Kong.
I wish I could still enjoy playing video games like I used to before
The punisher (2005) video game was my favorite licensed video game. It's not as known as most titles listed but it's truly a hidden gem. It still holds up today and aged amazingly.
Oh hey, a cameo from the hands of Brian Zane of Wrestling With Wregret! “Wash up, and that’s the bottom line because Stone Cold said so!”
Everybody gives so much flak to Oddjob in Goldeneye cuz he was so short, but nobody ever mentions the female moonraker character. She was just as small as Oddjob and evened the playing field if playing with 1 friend who just always had to be Oddjob. I know this has nothing to do with the video itself, but just wanted to mention it cuz im tired of Oddjob taking all the heat. Lol
No mention of The Warriors game? That was pretty awesome, and actually got a remaster as well.
King Kong was pretty cool tho, especially the 360 version, the last gen (PS2/Xbox) versions lacked that extra spark but overall it had some very nice ideas. It was rather short though.
I still pop Hit and Run in the Wii, grab the GB controller and still spend a hr or so driving around listening to Homers one liners. Such a great game even after all these years
Smackdown here comes the pain has still held up well too.
My only disagreement is that the best James Bond, is the one you grew up with.
For me single player- everything or nothing. Multiplayer- goldeneye
@@DL-df3lg I meant the actor.
Pierce Brosnan 😌
I am amazed that you guys got through this whole list that naming at least one done by raven software. Yes, these days they only do call of duty crap, but back in the day they were the kings of licensed games
They did:
X-Men legends 1 and 2
Marvel ultimate alliance 1 & 2
X-Men origins: wolverine
Star Trek Voyager: elite force
Star Wars: Jedi Knight two: Jedi outcast
Jedi academy
Seriously, all of these games were pretty damn good. Yes, even the voyager game. Who would’ve thought?
My copy of legends was bugged and I could never get past the part on the aircraft carrier because of it. I'm still annoyed fifteen plus years later 😅. I had so much fun with it, then the ultimate alliance games later on
King Kong game needs a remake, it would be terrifying and amazing.
i tried a demo of the king kong game, and when i played the humans, the damn t-rex scared the fuck outta me
I would have put The Lord of the Rings: Two Towers & Return of the King are great and worthy mentions.
Licensed games have gotten to the point that there are probably enough for you guys to do one of your Mega lists on the subject and still miss a few.
I will defend to Death that "KiSS Psycho Circus: The Nightmare Child" is a fantastic adaptation of the source Comic Book. And Heavy Metal FAKK2 ain't too bad either
from all of this I think the one who deserves the most praise is Alien Isolation, specifically for the phone port, they managed to put the whole entire game on phones, no cut downs appart from a graphical downgrade, but apart from that, it's the entire full experience, and even with the downgrades it still has nothing to envy to the other versions, it's still to this date possibly one of the best looking phone games, and most mid range current phones should be able to run it, and best part, it's like $6 in the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, the full experience on the go for less than 10 bucks
For a next list like this, I can recommend Adventure Time and the Secret of the Nameless Kingdom EASILY
That 1989 Batman game was hard as nails as a kid. I remember getting to about stage 6 and had to leave, so I tried keeping the NES on all day and it didn't work.
They often get forgotten about but there was plenty of amazing power rangers games.
Even if you just want to include battle for the grid.
But the snes and mega drive/genesis games where amazing.
I feel Batman Returns (snes) and Aliens 3 (also snes) deserve honorable mentions.
The Punisher, King Kong, both LOTR The Two Towers and Return of the King, Scarface and The Thing all were great games. Maybe you guys can get to them in a part 2 maybe?
Batman was all time top 4 favorite NES game , it goes 1. River city ransom 2 blaster master 3 astrynax 4 Batman 5 festers quest 6 World Cup 7 back to future
Instead of Alien: Isloation, I would've listed the 1999 Aliens Versus Predator game for PC by Rebellion and its Millennium expansion pack. That was a top-notch game (way better than the one for the Atari Jaguar) that also had awesome online multiplayer.
P.S. The updated re-release Aliens Versus Predator Classic 2000 still plays great and is a ton of fun.
SS: Battle for Bikini Bottom being on this list makes me happy. One of my favourite licensed games ever. It's a mix of fan-service with fun gameplay.
Even if you aren't a fan of Spongebob you can enjoy the platforming and exploration the game offers.
I liked revenge of the flying Dutchman better tbh
@@nightmare8162 I never played that one. I did play the first movie game, and the dream one. Also Nicktoons Unite. :D
@@AlmightyPolarBear def worth a play
@@nightmare8162 Is it accessible in any way that isn't emulating? As I don't own a copy of the game.
That King Kong game was so good. I watched the movie after I beat it and I was dissapointed.
I know right?! The game was so much better than the movie
@@andson02 i was so disapointed with how early the black dude died in the movie.
Peter Jackson's King Kong game on PC was surprisingly quality. It was a little clunky at times, but that's what happens when you want to take away a UI.
Is Tiny Peter actually Peter Jackson? I'm not convinced his last name is really Austin. I think that's a pseudonym, to keep low-profile on teh interwebs.
The Wolverine Origins game should be here, or at least an honorable mention
King Kong at #1 was a shocker, I've never heard or read anywhere that it's the best movie tie-in game ever. I thought it was kind of boring when I had it on the 360. The movie was pretty boring too when Kong wasn't in it 🦍
woah LOTR: return of the king guys!?!? the best ps2 game at the time!
A wild Brian Zane (hand and arm) appearance! Love it!
I’d have used the Raimi Spider-Man 1 game instead of the second simply because the first game has way more content, such as alternate costumes, the ability to replay levels, the ability to play as the Green Goblin, and so on. Literally the only thing Spider-Man 2 has is the open world and web swinging. Everything else, Spider-Man 1 did objectively better.
On that last part, it was the very fun game play of Spider Man 2, the most important thing for any game in the first place, that holds it in greater regards to many people over Spider Man 1. SM1 was such a nightmare with the fundamental game play in some its mostly linear levels, especially the one bomb diffusal level (I think, or it may have been another since I haven't played it on PS2 since right before SM2 released) or that one bizarre Shocker boss battle in the train tunnels! That fight was annoying since avoiding his Shock Wave attacks became tedious because ol' Web-Head would lock-on and wall crawl frustratingly to the tunnel walls! In my humble opinion, SM1 was only better for just the extra costumes, the decent Green Goblin campaign, and the one minute of total enjoyment of Selecting Mary Jane as a Costume and her Lesbo kissing herself in the end, ONLY in the early version of the game where as the second printing disabled that. Next thing they'll feel the need to remaster SM1 for the current gen consoles based on the then Mary Jane oversight to be in with the modern days.....
Mad Max. I'm actually playing it now and it is fantastic. I did really like King Kong though.
Chronicles of riddick escape from butcher bay, a lot of Star Wars games, origins wolverine Scott pilgrim
No Ghostbusters The Video Game (2009)?
For shame
You guys forgot about Mummy: Demastered.
Did everyone just forget South Park? The Stick of Truth is the funniest game ever made
U.N. Squadron. One of the best arcade shooters with a SNES port, based on the Area 88 manga (which almost certainly inspired the Ace Combat games).
«Batman» looks sooo good for a NES game..!
Buffy and the lord of the rings movie game series were pretty good too
really snubbed Chronicles of Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay. if King Kong is here than Riddick should be too. Starbreeze, later Machine Games, worked very closely with Vin Diesel and made what is basically a really solid immersive sim
Well at least he didn't double flub it with mentioning that crappy recent "Fast and Furious" game that Mr. Vinny Petrol and his Female Co-Star were so proud to announce at the Game Awards. Oh wait, were any Fast and Furious games any good? I wasn't even too hot on the FnF racing arcade machine, which I will say is also the only game based on the franchise, that Mr Vin probably had no publicity touch in, that I actually like! Figure That!
@@marukuanfuni its a pretty known fact that vincent gasoline is a massive nerd, i think FandF is a paycheck to him. he actually _loves_ riddick the character
Ok, random Wrestling with Wregret clip :D
Judge Dredd on Super Nintendo, best plot twist is it goes from the movie and then bam out of nowhere into the comics.
13:17 what's funny is the title is completely misleading, this game was not a remaster, it was a full on remake from top to bottom but still made to be very similar to the original NES game
Does anyone else get a little annoyed when the Arkham series is referred to as a trilogy despite there being 4 major titles released. I know Origins was a prequel but still.
Very much so! I didn't even really liked Arkham Knight that much, but absolutely loved Arkham Origins
What about The Amazing Spider-Man tie-in game?
Nothing like a good licensed game honestly! When they're good they're so fun and charming! The Spongebob and Simpsons games of my youth are still great to pop in today!
I thoght KotoR would be number 1. Mildly surprised it isn't and not even on the list.
6:42 yep. That’s the one I was waiting for.
You’ve now made a list on lord of the rings and also a list of great tie ins and somehow managed to avoid talking about shadow of war/Mordor in both. Kudos.
they aren't lotr games, so yhey weren't onthat list, I guess they are licensed though
What about Scooby doo night of 100 frights? 😭😭
The Dungeons and Dragons Arcade Games By Capcom after watching reruns of the 80's animated series on Fox Kids and the recent Dungeons and Dragons Honor Among Thieves I consider myself a fan sort of
Well, to be fair, you then have to mention Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, The Punisher, and Alien Vs Predator :p. Capcom was on a roll with heir arcade adaptations at the time.
Played the hell out of King Kong back in the day.
See I've always been questioned about WWF No Mercy, as I do agree it was a really good game for the time and probably one of the best selling games on the Nintendo 64 however I have a question for everyone that is in the comments section if a game needs mods to keep a game alive, wouldn't that mean that it's not that great to begin with?? , surely if a game is that great you would just leave it as it is? 🤔
I like your new graphics! fun
Goldeneye was good for the time, but now it's dated horribly. I get the nostalgia for it, but I consider the N64 controller to be a war crime.
King kong 💪🏻🍻🤟🏻🦍
The Warriors - PS2
Oh Peter... I really wish you'd have left WWF No Mercy off the list(don't get me wrong that's the best wrestling game of all time, it's just really isn't in the spirit of the list) and instead put The Chronicles Of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay
The Lord of the Rings Return of the King is really good one also
What a nice list
Wait. Talking soap? Where do i get one?
9:43 WTF
The warriors?
LOTR on PS2?
Should've expected Good Ol' DK to take the top spot.
Toy Story 2
The Warriors
Small Soldiers
Triple Jump Time
It depended on which platform you played Batman. Some of the versions were terrible
Soooo cool my friend 🤪👑😘
The incredibles game was good also
I’m confused by this list lol
🎉
Literally this video: "Have you heard of this game called Mario? Apparently people think it's pretty good." Some more obscure entries please. This was one of your laziest lists yet and that's saying something. Anyway, you guys should try out Atlantis on the GBC, it's great.
