Microwave oven doesn't heat all the 5 liquids evenly if if they are put together.
The way a microwave oven works is it heats up things which have more water content in them. That's why blood and Maple syrup heated up too much and the oils didn't.

Engine oil staying cooler in the microwave oven has nothing to do with "dealing better with heat." The 2.45GHz frequency of microwave magnetrons was picked for its relatively strong interaction with water molecules commonly present in food. The low-moisture fluids stay cooler simply because they don't absorb anywhere near as much energy.

You guys should have used an electric heating plate to test the thermals. That would have allowed for more control over the heat and prevent uneven heat distribution. Microwaves operate by having electromagnetic waves interact with certain molecules by vibrating them, the most common being water. This means that the different molecular makeup of the fluids determined the amount of energy being absorbed by radiation heat transfer rather than the ability to absorb heat via conduction (the type of heat transfer seen in an engine.) That is why there is a such a huge difference in the temperature between the fluids.

Useful hint! Years ago I had a leak in my MK3 golf steering rack, I was in Greece, where I didn't manage to find power steering fluid in any of the local gas stations, but we had plenty of olive oil. I filled it in, got home, few months later, my steering started hardening again, so i refilled with olive oil :) Somehow the leak cured itself, probably because of high viscosity olive oil and I never went back to real power steering fluid, I scrapped the car years and 50 000 km later with the olive oil still working fine.
So maybe, olive oil which has probably the highest viscosity of all cooking oils would be better than the canola oil, at least for the test purpose

That heat test is somewhat inaccurate, since microwaves essentially generate friction on water molecules that heat up the food it comprises. In this case, those all have different water contents, so they'll all react differently from each other

Other than ATF, Canola would work okay, as expected. It has a flash point of about 700 degrees, and in terms of cooking it's quite common to add a bit of Canola Oil when using butter to cook as the Canola Oil prevents the butter from burning and turning brown if the heat gets to high. And it's why we use it in our deep fryers.
Also, Fun Fact (Fun Fact? Maybe...): The original name for Canola, which is a GMO and created in a lab at the University of Manitoba, was Rapeseed. It was obviously changed to something a bit less...rapey. Though it still uses the name Rapeseed in England.

I'd like to make mention about the way a microwave "cooks" food. Let's put it this way; the micro radio waves being broadcast inside the box collide with and agitate molecules which causes them to give off more heat. Some substances are more subjected to this molecular agitation than others. Sugars and water in foods are some of the more efficiently agitated substances than foreign objects a block of Styrofoam (just a hunch). Maple syrup did exactly as would be expected with heating up faster than the motor oil, the substance least affected by the agitation of the micro radio waves. Heating up test liquids through conduction like a 'sous vide' steak could also provide as a reliable method of having equal temperatures across liquid test materials.
FUN FACT: The holes in the screen door of your microwave are just slightly smaller than the micro radio waves themselves, therefore not allowing them to pass through the screen as we are wondering what kinds of cancer microwave appliances cause as we stand too close. They're just photons, give it the photon-beans.

to be fair, the microwave won't heat up oils, especially engine oil as the fluid won't have enough water in it to raise the overall temp of said fluid. Microwave bandwidth is tuned to target water molecules in food. That's how it heats up the food by exciting water molecules in whatever food item is present in the oven.

To clarify for a 5W-20 oil the W stands for Winter. Both the 5 and 20 are measurements of viscosity. The 5 is when cold (40°F) and the 20 is when at operating temperature (210°F). Lower means less viscous/ more runny. Higher means more viscous/less runny. So even though the W doesn't mean Weight the the number or viscosity index is widely called the oil weight.

Why would it be less viscous when cold? I see you were perhaps not implying that. From amsoil they are tested at 40 C (104 f) and 100 C (212 f ). they make multi grade oils that can still be pumped efficiently through the engine when it is cold below 40 C. the higher number after the w does not mean that the oil is thicker at 100 C than 40C
