I have been using the kamilsss firmware for some time now I use it because the spectrum scanner is much faster than egzumer and when you get on a frequency that you want you just push the PTT and it imports it to the VFO very useful
The Quansheng has the black knob, a beautiful blue display and a 2200mAh battery as standard and it accepts all the firmwares only thing is you loose the USB which is only for emergency so not a great deal
Yes you can, and as mentioned the repeaters squelch needs to be open because the dcs/ctcss will be disabled when the burst is sent. If the squelch is open for about a second and you're fast enough, you can press ptt, then rather quickly hit f+mm and it'll go through. Be sure encryption is off so no one can complain.
Isn't DSTAR encryption? But it's used quite a bit. What's the line between encryption and encoding? Why do some European countries say DSTAR is encryption, when some do not? There's gotta be a line some place.
@@jeffdill5260 Anyone can listen to D-Star communication. But if you use ChaCha20 encryption with a secret password, as it is implemeted in this firmware, no one can decode it. Seems that some need to understand what modulation, transmission protocol and encryption is all about.
@@jeffdill5260 anyone with a D-Star Radio can listen to a D-Star communication, therefore it's an 'open communication' and in no way 'encrypted'. You have to differentiate between modulation, transmission protocol (encoding) and encryption. The shown firmware has built-in encryption with ChaCha20 256 bit and uses a private (secret) password. In this case, nobody, except the one who will know the secret password, can read it. This encryption function will certainly be of interest to a specific group of people who want to hide from the authorities. Encryption activated or not - if present in the device, then the device is forbidden for Ham Radio. I have compiled the firmware of kamilsss655 (he is not "Kamill" as in the video) without the encryption, mesh-network and text messages - works fine.

I actually find it quite useful. I communicate with txt messaging using radios in between as nodes. I get you don't like it, but it can be useful for people.
That mesh feature is cool, radios playing the "pass it on" game.
Awesome! This gift just keeps on giving, so glad I got my little radio!
Thanks for watching 👍
Now that's useful. I flashed my Quanshengs with Kamil and find it's my preference.
Thanks for watching, glad you found it useful 👍
Interesting that it can work with mesh. Another great video, thx
I've no idea how it works, but yeah, looks great. Thanks for watching 👍

Cool, thanks for commenting and for watching 👍
I think I like this!
so now the text mode isnt a gimmick anymore wow
Pretty impressive, I’ll have to give that a go Ben. 👍
Yeah it's very 90's mate, right up your street 😉
@@m7frs272 Might be worth trying that over distance against other modes as I’m guessing that could be the next SHTF gaming changer..😁
Also, would be great if you could buy a thin silicone keypad overlay, with the proper lettering on, for less frustration.
Nice one Ben time to buy a few more LOL
Thanks for watching 👍
How many characters messages can you send at a time ?
How do you get those lovely black volume knobs?
Swapped with the UV-5R Plus's 😉

Were you able to message through analog repeaters to extend range? I
That's not something I've tried, but I guess if the repeater was already open when the data burst is sent, then it may work 🤷♂️

Is text messaging a feature already built into the radio or do you have to add it?
No it's not standard. It's currently just available within this. modified firmware which you would need to flash to the radio. Thanks for watching 👍
@@m7frs272 ok. Thank you.
Encryption and encrypted messages as in this firmware is prohibited for amateur radio in almost every country in the world.
Sorry, I forgot to mention that in the video. It is possible to turn off the encryption in the menu. Thanks for watching 👍

Yes!
why? a gimmick No practical use at all ffs 10mins to Send a short message no thank you
Welcome back to the 1990's! Yes it gimmick, but amateur radio is all about experimenting. Thanks for watching anyway 👍
FFS, don't be so upset about it, dry your eyes and go and play Minecraft or something
