Steve's time, syncopation, and feel are beyond amazing. Don't know any drummer who isn't in awe of his tasteful, incredible chops. Steve, Vinnie, and Dave are beyond belief. Each of them are as accomplished as any human drummer could be. Such a blast to watch guys like this show us what's possible on drums.
Yes, that's all true, but what of the non-humans, The Neil Pearts of the parrot world, The Palm Cockatoo, has incredible time keeping skills. The woodpecker would, if he could, and he should, put many blast beat humans to shame. What people need to understand, and they don't because I'm patronising and a know it all, is Steve Gadd is like a river not a machine. He flows, he be like water, like Bruce Lee told us to be but nobody listened...except for Steve and the parrots.
Steve lives in the pocket. Never loses "1" no matter what he's playing or soloing. He makes things look easier than they are. He proves that the most important role of a drummer is the groove, not speed or flash.
This drum solo........... keeping the flow ....listening and getting ready to set up the Attack ...... like A beautiful elegant Panther .......the suspense is present from the very beginning ......LISTENING again......set up the climax..... .he is in Sync with nature ....... Calm but highly explosive to make the Kill......Kiling it KING of the Jungle
Love their Jazz and must of all of them play it like it is!!!! Music is in my head, Music is in my heart and Music is in my Soul. Thank You Steve , Michael, Jimmy, Walt and Larry you are just amazing Musicians.
Glad I got to see this living legend live with his own band at Yoshis in Oakland. Then I saw him at the airport on his way home to Phoenix. Please make a DVD of this.
Many young drummers don't have the correct stick placement for rim taps. The bead of the stick is supposed to be on the snare head to give the stick maximum sound on the rim. Steve knows.
Yes, I noticed that. Same group of musicians that plays with James Taylor--minus the back-up singers, James, Lou Marini on horns, and Luis Conte on percussion. Love this though. Great music!
Hi, @tomgadd. Thanks for uploading this amazing performance of the Steve Gadd Band. You mentioned that the sound is remastered from the original 24 bit 192 kHz stream; is there any place where such stream can be purchased? Thanks in advance for responding with whatever information you may have.
This band (along with Michel Petrucciani's with Miroslav Vitous) must be Gadd's best work in jazz so far. So different from the stale and uninspired jazz-fusion attempts he was known for in the 70s and 80s. I'm happy he seem to have developed into a little more than a good reader and skilled pop session drummer.
gadd is the bomb...but, i call a bit fakery at 10:58-11:40 i hear snare rolls (11:07) and his hands aren't even moving. they have to have another drummer or imo, they are playing to a tape. notice the lead guitarist quickly turns off the playback recorder at the very end.
when I play jazz drums that loud everyone seems to hate it. Maybe it's just the small rooms that accentuate everything but it seems unfair that the pros get to play as loud as they need and us mortals have to play with chopsticks so as not to offend small room players. I had one rehearsal where even my brushes swooshing were deemed much too loud....some ridiculous 15x25 attic loft thing with an 8 foot foot ceiling and A-frame design. I balked and whined and never got asked back...ha. Oh well, the fates of the talented and less regarded will always seem unfair I suppose.
I am not a drummer, but it seems to me that Jas Bataille is onto something regarding adapting to a small room, and how Gadd checks with his bandmates about the overall effect of their making music together.
I have had that issue with singers. the guitar and bass sometimes keys are at a reasonable volume... amplified, the vocals are LOUD. but tapping the bass drum with the beater only 2 inches from the head and playing the snare side stick klave was just 2 LOUD! and this was contemporary pop music! Divas!!! Even the other guys in the band were rolling there eyes. I got so irritated I said "Look... it's not a violin"
Been in the same circumstances playing jazz. Sound guy always wanted to mike my kick but the guys said it was too much. Sound guy kept saying it sounded way better out front. It was all good. Got my brush technique up better than ever while I was doing the gig, though.
Did these guys all just drop acid and I just tripping balls? Because none of them are playing in tune with each other or in the same rhythm, but they're just playing and playing. LOL! And here's the crazy part about it; I think it sounds fucking awesome! Bahahahahahaha!!!
David, I know you ultimately realize that this is fu(king great, but by your comments I realize that you are listening with rock 'n roll ears. They ARE playing in key with each other and inspiring and being inspired by each other. Mostly no backbeat. But sometimes. And they didn't come up with this in a vacuum. Listen to three Miles' albums. Kind of Blue-1958, In A Silent Way-1968, then Bitches Brew- 1969. Then listen to this again. W lcome to real jazz. Enjoy.
Joseph Hemeroid spot on! save the 'KIND OF BLUE'. Not 1958 it was recorded and released in 1959! Sorry I'm a "when it was recorded" and dates GEEK. LOL🤓 But you 💯% correct. His analysis was way off but nonetheless came to a reasonable conclusion. I guess he doesn't understand polyrhythms or anything not open cords and pentatonic scales! Wich is ok. I'm a drummer and I'm a poor reader of music. I Know almost nothing about music theory. But I love Jazz and classical! I just understand it. I don't have the dudes name in front of me so I mean no disrespect. I think he has good ears because he likes it. To me it proves you don't HAVE to be a master musician to understand polyrhythms and jazz. Hey some Jazz is or more was at times "out" but done so on purpose. I love ornette Coleman but personally I don't like his 'FREE JAZZ' recording.I think it's just way too out,2 many musicians playing over each other and NOT listening. That album sound like they all dropped some acid, stared at a Jackson Pollock painting and while peaking ran in the studio and just played. The drums on that record are so bad it's just different to be different... shock bullshit.... It sounds like a bunch of children who never played before. like when kids first play soccer (football) There's the ball with a crowd of kids all bunched up chasing it. they look like a bunch of 🐝's
David Bruce here's the deal: there's a theme that runs through it, and these guys are all experts at creating rhythmic and harmonic tension, which builds dynamic, and tells a story. Try just singing the basic drum beat through the whole tune, and you'll hear what it's about-- like a movie soundtrack in real time.
I have 2 favorite drummers ..... Steve is both of 'em.
IDIOT
I'm not a complete idiot....... some parts of me are missing.
ok i love you now bro sorry
Thanks mate.
Your humor is great :)
Ive been playing for 40 years ,i believe no drummer today will has the feel Gadd has , he's a one off , great to hear the master at work .
Steve's time, syncopation, and feel are beyond amazing. Don't know any drummer who isn't in awe of his tasteful, incredible chops. Steve, Vinnie, and Dave are beyond belief. You hear right away that is it Landau on the guitar, awesome sound!
This is what Gadd does best...this is where his creativity and expertise really shine.
5:57 woke my cats up 🙂
Thanks for the upload!

KING of the Jungle
I think they should hire you to narrate this in a whispering voice as the music is played.
Top notch! Incredible sound quality. And their playing is as good as it gets
Love their Jazz and must of all of them play it like it is!!!! Music is in my head, Music is in my heart and Music is in my Soul. Thank You Steve , Michael, Jimmy, Walt and Larry you are just amazing Musicians.
Amazing performance from The Masters! They put so much filing and dynamic into it...
5:50 "Oh you thought we were going to Africa buddy? Well buckle up because we're going to SPACE.""
Great chance to see this guys playing together! Thank you for sharing!
Steve Gadd one of the greatest Musician of all time.......*******
These masters are so blessed - hard to believe.
Great concert ❤
Larry Goldings on the Hammond organ.
DAMN, that is some sweet playin'!
The god of the drums!
👍🙂‼️Gadd's so tasty & solid!!
Glad I got to see this living legend live with his own band at Yoshis in Oakland. Then I saw him at the airport on his way home to Phoenix. Please make a DVD of this.
Impeccable and magical
What a delight to listen to a Rhythm Section that never drops the ball.
YEA!!!!!!in his 70s and STILL has “IT”. Language 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
11:49 that tom control was CRAZY.
fun to hear g play a little outside ...music and groove we are what we are no matter what
The flow is just beautiful
It doesnt matter the music style, The Gaddmyster has the perfect pocket groove for it!!!!
Enjoyed their perfomance at April Jazz 2017 Espoo Finland. Peaches and cream.
Very good, inspired music! I love it!
James Taylor said of Mike Landau " in my opinion the best there is". Mine too
Amazing project by the Legend Gadd. Can't believe my eyes from 12:25 to 12:33 sooo cool 😎
Is it just me, or did Steve Gadd's [jazz-] sensibilities became much better after the 70-90s?
This improvisation is great, btw!
Mike Landau plays the guitar like nobody's business. Every note is full and three dimensional!
I can actually relate to this kind of jazz. It makes more sense to me. Great stuff.
My alltime favorite
Amazing!!! 👏👏👏
Would love to hear Steve play the old tune FEVER .his way.!!!
excelente maestro steve
No. Wait: 12:26-12:34. That snare hit right on point? Steve. You are the master.
Incredible! In the pocket!
I just noticed, it looks like his bottom hi-hat has rivets in it? I have never heard of that before!
Fire on the stage...
100th thumb up. 100%! Something magical is happening here I guess.
Soooooo Smooth !!!!
NOBODY KILLS IT LIKE STEVE NOBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow Steve Gadd
FUCKKKKKKKKKKKK AMAZIIIIIIIIINNGGGGGGG STEVE GAD ALWAYS SURPRISE EVERYBODY
LMFAO!!! all those extra letters and you left a D out of GADD!? strange but yet funny... Was that an attempt to be ironical??
Many young drummers don't have the correct stick placement for rim taps. The bead of the stick is supposed to be on the snare head to give the stick maximum sound on the rim. Steve knows.
10:31. Oh yes.
This is James Taylor's band, minus James. Gadd is a god. Love the man.
Yes, I noticed that. Same group of musicians that plays with James Taylor--minus the back-up singers, James, Lou Marini on horns, and Luis Conte on percussion. Love this though. Great music!
Here though, the guys get to actually show you what they are capable of.
Que du bonheur!
Any day I put my ears on Larry Golding's organ work is a GOOD day. This from Ronnie Scott's?
なんでずれたっぽいフレーズ叩いて最後びしっ!ってあうの!ほんとしびれる
Cool i heard lil miles in there😁
Why not come to Liverpool Philharmonic Hall?
There's another version of this on YT filmed at Leverkusener in 2015. It's stronger than this one. It's much more intense.
Super big band...
What a find, this is amazing! Larry Golding too?! Is this really James Taylor's band (minus Steve)?
James 's band including Steve
Dream team.
ааааааааа... шикарно
Steve Gadd talking with God.
zarkadiusz7 talking to himself?

Bd the i did record the stream and remastered audio. Unfortunately this was the only tune recorded without gaps. So, only this Track...
Africa song by Toto ???
Cristo!!!!

Larry doing mad shit aliens 👽 sound

don't get me wrong, i love this shit. this is miles davis quality. i don't call it cheating. i call it putting on a show.
I completely disagree. He’s clearly playing this live. No tape machine...
Have seen them live and nothing is taped. U need a hearing exam
It's almost painful to hear how much groove and music Steve can coax from a drum kit...
when I play jazz drums that loud everyone seems to hate it. If you apply the appropriate nuances, people usually won't bitch about your volume. Granted, many rooms are shit for drums especially.

Ken Ray Wilemon Agreed! Hell Elvin, Blakey, Williams would all get reamed out big time in modern day situations you talk about.
If this is african inspired.. they're based on an ordinary marching rhytm, downpressing any lively growth.
From an african percussionist.
Guitar way, way to loud in the mix. Otherwise, this is beautiful, soulful AND unbelievably cool.
Е-minor shuffle
That guitar player's sound walks all over Gadd's brilliant subtleties.
That's the legendary Michael Landau on guitar. He wrote this beautiful tune.
On the silent way of Miles Davis.
Did these guys all just drop acid and I just tripping balls? Because none of them are playing in tune with each other or in the same rhythm, but they're just playing and playing. LOL! And here's the crazy part about it; I think it sounds fucking awesome! Bahahahahahaha!!!

This is not a todo song.
12:24 this man made a wormhole for 10 seconds
