I’m always amazed at the Level of control Steve Gadd has. Never overplays, yet contributes to the overall intensity level of the group in his own stylistic ways. Genius! The interplay between all the musicians here is phenomenal. My favorite part is during the guitar solo - amazing interplay between he and Chick, but it is also between all other members between themselves as duos as well as the entire group. It’s like that all have 5 ears! I appreciate all 24 minutes of this!
I caught up with Gadd backstage after a gig with the North Texas State University 1:00 band back in the early 80s. I told him I first heard him on chick’s leprechaun album and loved how he somehow seemed to play the tune’s melodies on the kit note for note. He responded that he learned a lot about playing drums from chick.
Hm, interesting. We the family disagree! @Jazz-life if only you could ask Chick. Steve was more than well-fitted. You do understand that Chick has a certain role in Steve's style, right? Steve learned many things from him.
It's sometimes easy to forget just how formidable a drummer Steve Gadd has been - and on evidence of this performance, still is - on the drum set, particularly when we have such an array of impressively explosive drummers out there now. It's only when you watch a video like this that you realise where it ALL came from. So much of his playing has inspired generations of drummers. A remarkable achievement. Long live SG.
And he's not up there messing around, he's pushing the song along and then getting out of the way. I like that he doesn't play a ton of fills and show off, he is tasteful.
He’s definitely the epitome of groove, taste, sensibility and style. I hope the new generation of musicians especially drummers can appreciate his artistry and contribution to the world of music.
The older I get, the more I appreciate Gadd's drumming! Now I understand what everyone was talking about when I was younger. RIP Chick, thank you for the music!
Something else to be said about Chick is: how he LISTENS. As the music grooves ahead, you can see how Chick attunes himself to his fellow players---eyes roving, ears open. Notice, for example, the intimate way Chick digs into what Lionel is putting out. Chick happily sustains Lionel's energy, but he also invites L into what appears to be a spontaneous duet. You can see it all from 9:00 to 12:00. Their shared contact deepens what the moment offers. On this day---2/14/2021---it looks like Chick is sending Lionel a valentine.
We miss you, Chick! You inspired so many people around the world with your music. I think I realized how much your music meant to me, when you were gone. Fortunately, the music lives on.

In the shower of well-deserved praise for the band, don’t forget Steve Wilson. His subtle use of space and confident phrasing set a high bar for the solos that followed. Without drawing attention to himself, he helped the tight arrangement to breathe shifting the music into a higher gear. That’s the sign of a master.
That is gorgeous! Just really getting into Chick. Saw a great interview that Rick Beato did with Steve Gadd, that took Me down the rabbit hole :) Love how Chick watches the other players, it reminds Me of Dave Brubeck. Very cool!

I love this because Gadd is just doing Gadd things while the bass player and the percussion player just vibe (in the best way) and Chic and the sax and drum player just duke it out.
Hard time comprehending the awesome talent I just experienced, but I expected nothing less from this line up before I even started watching. I knew I was in for a master class of how to perform at the highest level and how to play with, against, for and to the other band members and the audience. Amazing in every respect.
This whole thing is so good, but the guitar solo is completely fearless, unconventional, & the band plus Chick coalesce under and with the guitar soloist. Each chorus, the music goes to a higher level. I can watch this video over and over. Thank you Master Chick Corea RIP - rest in power - and salute to every single great musician who has performed/recorded with Armando over many years.

He uses space so well, that's what makes his grooves so good, he knows when not to play and let the rhythm breathe.
His career was built on song construction and the role drums plays in those songs. Even his solos are designed the way a song is constructed .
Buddy Rich thought of him as the finest drummer, after himself:)
