Triumph always looks and feels like premium in everything from top end components to almost artistic finish. Ktm on the other hand still looks like budget bike. I owned triple 765 R so yeh I’m biased but whatever. I could recommend that bike all day over and over and over again without hesitation..
The Triumph has the unfortunate 'issue' of having a bit too long of gearing. You two were talking about how lethargic it feels, and I have to agree, on my 2019 ST-RS it felt the same on stock gearing, it always took a bit to get up in revs. However, all of that changed when I put a 15 tooth front sprocket on it. Feels like the bike was originally designed with that sprocket in mind. Always ready to go now, no lag.
Last year I had a test ride with Duke790R and it didn't feel like a well put bike. The engine was too aggressive, whenever you touch the throttle it was pulling right away but also when you leave the throttle engine compression making it feel like you are hard breaking all the time. The throttle was like an ON/OFF button which you definitely don't want it when you are cornering. Even though I raced motocross and supermoto which I enjoyed that torque of a 1 cylinder, I didn't like the Duke as a street naked. I think KTM still has this DNA of a motocross bike which is more like boxing where it focuses on explosive power delivery. I think road racing and street performance is more like ballet. It's more about smooth movement and precision. That's why I bought Street Triple S last year and I love that machine a lot. The powerband is smooth in every rev, it sounds amazing, corners amazing, material quality amazing and most importantly it's not a machine constantly wants to kill you, its a machine cooperates with you to go further faster.
Great vid & review, best I've seen of these two so far. I prefer the KTM at face value but I wonder if it's all or nothing full on personality would get a bit wearing after a while where as the Triumph is a bit more Jekyll & Hyde & can be both civilised or a hooligan if you want too.
Cracking bikes! Would love to see the Duke 890 Vs Hypermotard 950. Want to take one of those bikes to the picos. Will sacrifice touring ability for fun once there. Thoughts?...
2021 Gets a bump of ~5 hp and ~4 torque, from 847cc to 890cc. Loses 6 pounds, gains a PILE of upgrades across the board. It's practically a new machine from the ground up.
Its hard to choose. Pretty sure both bikes are great. However i feel like the striple *R* is the bike to get.... Unless you are a very hardcore rider or doing a lot of trackriding the fully adjustable Showas will be more than enough... I have ridden multiple bikes and i could not care less for a lack of tft dash...you also get the buttery smooth QS up/down which in my way works better than the one on KTMs. And all this for 8900. A simple exhaust mod will get you back the few ponnies missing from factory... Only my thoughts .. nice review!
I bought my Street Triple new in 2009. Still love it. Might have to part company soon as health ain't what is was now i'm 61. Might be heading to a Tiger.
Having owned both, I'd take the 890R every time. One thing they didn't touch on is fuel economy. I don't buy a bike for it & don't really care, but the difference between these is massive. I got no lower than 59/60mpg out of my 890R, no matter how I rode it (saw 80+ on more than one occasion on steady 70mph motorway runs). The Triumph averages mid-high 40s & the best I've ever seen is 55mpg on a steady motorway run. An odd, unexpected benefit of the KTM...
I'm in a predicament right now... I want a middleweight off-road adv, and a sporty naked... and the 890 is the best in both categories.. what do I do buy 2 890s?? Lol. I almost want to get the 765rs just to not have 2 of the same
Saw you two heading out through Keynsham the other morning whikst walking back from the school run. Knew this vid was coming and it proper got me excited!!! Solid work. Reckon I'd have the KTM for a weekend fun bike! Keep up the awesome content lads! 😎👍
@@MrMinimanmatt The KTM just too shouty for my taste, in fact I think the new headlights on the triple are a bit, dare I say, vulgar as well. I do like the looks of the 1290 black/orange scheme. But wallet says no...
Now things are opening up it's about time you two took these bikes on to the track and then have a sit down afterwards and have another great discussion and hopefully no sheep taking the limelight from your discussion 👍
I got lent a street triple when my Panigale was in for warranty work (shock and horror). Great little bikes. Actually enjoyed riding on the road for once
You mentioned "too refined" on the Triumph. That's literally my only big complaint about my 2016 Speed Triple R. Has lots of good power, but it's never scary. Even when working the throttle hard, you know exactly what it's going to do. I wish it had that scary, unhinged feeling when you really get at it.
I really want to buy an 890R, but I just can't do it until KTM fixes their electronics issues. All the modes and settings should be saved when turning the bike off and on, and I don't want to see all the damn dash faults, check engine lights, etc. Until they get that sorted, I can't justify owning one. It's such a bummer because it looks like an amazing street bike.
Are they the same price though? Don’t you still have to pay KTM to unlock everything electronically and let you have a quick shifter? Once you’ve gone through all that, the Triumph looks better value to me 👍
Duke 790 is the better option instead of a 890, bolt on some better forks, power commander and different brakes and you'll have a 790r with all the options a 890 doesn't have stock
Ian Chambers so the KTM base price is cheaper than the Triumph. As you said, it doesn’t include a quick shifter or the 5 riding modes. When you add the Tech Pack, you get all those features but it costs around $800. For this comparison, I’m pretty sure they opted for the extras to make it fair.
@44teeth Very interesting and informative review of the two! I'd love to give the KTM a try now due to your video, just to see what exactly is it that I'm missing out on! I always hear people comparing these two bikes but definitely looks like they have their own personalities.
So a comfy seat and a fly screen would have the KTM sorted. It beggars belief that these can’t be provided within a price tag over ten grand. Great honest review as ever chaps.
Pretty much and I don't ride motorcycles because I think it's a smart choice. I do it because I love it. Which is why the KTM is much more appealing. Though I bought a MT-09 back in 2017 and put fully adjustable Öhlins front and back.
Think Choice would also come to aesthetics. KTM's looks can be divisive (I like them, though I think the Street Triple is as good looking in its own way). Engine characteristics matter too. If you're used to dirt bikes, supermotos, and twins cyls in general, the KTM is an engine you'll be familiar with, having lots of torque all the way from the bottom, while the 3 cyl engine of the Triumph is a bit more like a supersport 600cc bike. I mostly owned ZX-6R and one R6 most my life, and a 2014 Street Tripe R, which was similar in a way to thZX-6R/R6. KTMs are different creatures, though. If It was my money (and it is right now, since ssaid Street Triple got ran over by a truck in a parking lot =( ) the 890 Duke R is what I may get (While I would not and did not get the 790 DUke in the past)
Sorry but the triumph has it on looks over the KTM. But I'd probably buy the KTM for a smile on my face riding it? Tough one to pick between the two of them. Good head 2 head by 44 teeth, thanks guys. Stay safe everybody 😃👍
GOD the sound of that triple! Like a Moto2 bike (drool) About the Triple not steering as quickly, can't you just drop the triple clamps down the forks to the maximum rake angle? Should be a simple fix and make a big difference.
@@anthonylynn1969 No way! Rode a MT09SP back to back with my 790 Duke and the 790 is a better bike so the 890 would crush it! Ride a 790 or 890 Duke if you get the chance and you'll be grinning like a Cheshire cat for the whole ride, trust me. The MT10 is a fantastic bike but not in the middleweight category like the Striple or Duke (It would be the rich fat uncle with a drinking problem)
Ah so the KTM has fully adjustable suspension does it? ... Show us the preload adjusters on the forks then ... bet ya can't .... because it doesn't have any 😉
I have an 890 for track only, and the lack of fork preload adjustment is a puzzling design decision, especially considering the sporting focus compared to the 790.
Can you adjust it internally for spring preload? Considering sag is the fundamental starting point of setting your bike up it seems crazy not to include that adjusment
@@kmc7355 You would have to add spacers to increase preload. Or change springs to make a gross change in either direction. For reference, I weigh 165lb without gear, and sag was pretty close to where I need it for track use.
The ST still has the same problem it had 10 years ago: that light/instrument cluster that sticks wayyyyy too far out in front and looks stupid from the side.
I think it'd be interesting to compare the specifications of the ktm890 and an original 916 Ducati. I know things move on over the years, but it would give you an idea of just how lively that ktm is. If they made an RC390-style sportsbike, it'd be a heck of a track day weapon. Im sure it'd be handy enough as-is.
I need to figure out how to introduce "ballbaggery" into my lexicon. I love triples and part of me wants to see the MT-09 up against the Street Triple, but then I realize that the MT is getting pretty old at this point and the suspension is designed to keep the MSRP low, not to properly suspend the bike. I mean, we can't even get the MT-09 SP in the States.
Triumph used to offer amazing pain options on their bikes, really wish they would bring that back instead of just putting a flouro sticker or two on them. Shame the KTM was so much more conservative than the prototype, I'd forgive the gremlins if it looked like the "Scalpel" we were promised, but the Triumph perfoms and has the build quality and refinements that KTM seems to forget about!
So the Triumph is more powerful, comfier, more wind protection for touring, faster on track more stable reliable and refined.. Mossy is correct, this will appeal to alot if people.. Having owned a few twins..the RSV1000 was a complete tractor ... I just don't get twins.. chugg.. transmission slap.. vibey on/off clatter.. I even prefer the scream if a 4 cylinder. ( I know the Triumph is a triple) Anyway ... Mossy for president...
I'm getting an MT-09 SP this week. Yeah, it's lower specced and less performance orientated than these 2. Still for those of us less than 5 years into riding bikes, only riding recreationally to take in the coast and countryside b-roads on evenings and weekends , it's plenty of bike to learn and grow with. Plus (in the eyes of this beholder) it's miles better looking than any of the Street Triple or Duke range bikes. If you're accustomed to sport bikes and have such experience of riding hard that nuances in performance are massively noticeable, you're gonna want a Triumph or KTM but otherwise it's really worth testing the Yamaha.
The Triumph may have more peak power but the KTM has much more power and torque between 3500 and 10,000RPM. That's were we spent 95% of our riding time.
Couldn't agree more and that's exactly why I bought the 790 over the RS and just traded up to an 890r for even more smiles everytime I twist the throttle. 😊😊😊
@@RealOrbit-Australia I meant the testers, every video I see they say how amazing the machine is...and then they go and buy something else. Maybe it's a reliability thing. I'd have one in a heartbeat!
Trumpet all day long. KTM isn't even a contender. Like Aprilia, there are bugger all dealers and you need a good dealer network for either... Triumph have set the bar so brilliantly high! Motorbikes will all get better to meet Triumphs level of quality. Proud of em

The quality has gone up another level on this one. Well done lads. I'd take the Triumph ;)
Top video lads - awesome review, locations, editing & banter (and of course Mossy on top form)!!! 👍👊
Great vid & review, best I've seen of these two so far. I prefer the KTM at face value but I wonder if it's all or nothing full on personality would get a bit wearing after a while where as the Triumph is a bit more Jekyll & Hyde & can be both civilised or a hooligan if you want too.
So good to see a father and son having a ride together and having a chat over some bikes being ridden.
I died when he went "CAN YOU SHUT UP MATE?!"
Same 😂

Cracking bikes!
Would love to see the Duke 890 Vs Hypermotard 950.
Want to take one of those bikes to the picos. Will sacrifice touring ability for fun once there.
Thoughts?...
I would also like to see compare of the Hyper and 890
Exactly, killing myself over which one to get.Would love to hear some insights on which is more un-nigel-y🤔😂
@@armankiarmankii there is on Bike World

21:36 - what happened there?
Pretending to crash
Yeah I think they were being silly. I've done that before when bored on a ride.
Haha, he entered the frame completely stable... Yeah that's some Statham level acting.
One his suspender straps came loose and twanged his bollocks?
Adjusting his love eggs lol
Awesome video as always. I'd love to know how the MT-09SP fits in with these two
2021 Gets a bump of ~5 hp and ~4 torque, from 847cc to 890cc. Loses 6 pounds, gains a PILE of upgrades across the board. It's practically a new machine from the ground up.
If you love it's looks( I'm not quite liking it),it is a huge technical improvement over the predecessor.it is on par with the st rs 765 now.
Love this review, you guys have made up my mind. Heard nothing but great reviews about this KTM. Cheers lads
Try the street scrambler unless you're pretty tall.
Wow, what good content. Crispy quality, straight forward information and wonderful hosts. Cheers from the US.
Lol. I almost want to get the 765rs just to not have 2 of the same
Get 790 Duke and 890 adventure
Saw you two heading out through Keynsham the other morning whikst walking back from the school run. Knew this vid was coming and it proper got me excited!!! Solid work. Reckon I'd have the KTM for a weekend fun bike! Keep up the awesome content lads! 😎👍
Triumphs have actually started to make bikes that are too good ?
Cool i will take that.
The styling on the KTM is hookey at best
Up close the KTM does look a bit cheep doesn’t it.
@@corposh yeah definitely.
As always looks are subjective i just think the KTM looks terrible
@@MrMinimanmatt The KTM just too shouty for my taste, in fact I think the new headlights on the triple are a bit, dare I say, vulgar as well. I do like the looks of the 1290 black/orange scheme. But wallet says no...
@@steveman1982 100% agree. The engine in the 1290 is just glorious.
Ktm do know how to make a characterful engine
Smashing triple vs Smashing Twin. Comes down to how you like your power delivered.
the KTM might be 10k at the moment, KTM winter sales will be sub 9k in 2021. So when at 1k less than the Triumph the KTM is the better buy.
They are “little” if you are a full size person.
Fagan looks like a baby of Statham and Keith Flint now. Epic.
Does the KTM come stock with the exclamination mark on the dash? :D
That's background @5:40 is ridiculously beautiful. Lucky fellas. Good review. Love both bikes.
I do love a sweet Sherry 😂
You mentioned "too refined" on the Triumph. That's literally my only big complaint about my 2016 Speed Triple R. Has lots of good power, but it's never scary. Even when working the throttle hard, you know exactly what it's going to do. I wish it had that scary, unhinged feeling when you really get at it.
I loved my 2014 Daytona 675r but I felt the same way. The mt09 ruined a lot of bike for me for this very reason.
@@TheUberdude14 or just buy an 890 did you actually watch this?
Fynn825 The Triumph works out much cheaper here in the UK when you look into it.....
Why spend on 790 if that was your plan in the 1st place lol just get 890. You cannot easily upgrade the engine .
@44teeth Very interesting and informative review of the two! I'd love to give the KTM a try now due to your video, just to see what exactly is it that I'm missing out on! I always hear people comparing these two bikes but definitely looks like they have their own personalities.
Interesting review, no KTM dealer of note near me, they’re kind of a stand in a corner shared with Aprillia and my last KTM needed a lot of parts!
That KTM sounds so uninspiring and shite when it's turned on. Triumph sounds allot better for me.
Yup the stock exhaust is crap, first thing i replaced on my 790
KTM is for lumberjacks...
So a comfy seat and a fly screen would have the KTM sorted. It beggars belief that these can’t be provided within a price tag over ten grand. Great honest review as ever chaps.
These guys are great. Definitely subscribing. Can’t wait to watch more videos from this channel.
Usual great vid, Mr Mossy definitely has a way with the words 😊 i have the gt and the ktm's sure have character.
that trumpet sounds epic man. imagine it with a straight through pipe music !
Heart = KTM Head = Truimph.
Wallet = Bicycle
9/10 would agree to this haha
Pretty much and I don't ride motorcycles because I think it's a smart choice. I do it because I love it. Which is why the KTM is much more appealing. Though I bought a MT-09 back in 2017 and put fully adjustable Öhlins front and back.
@Kattrap Yes and Yes
I sold my Street Triple R 765 after a year, although incredible, it was almost too refined for a naked. Went back to a Hypermotard 1100s.
I would have loved a refined motorcycle.
Have fun tho
Hey, KTM? 890 SM R and 1290 SM R. Do it. We're waiting.
there were some pics of a LC8c Supermoto prototype. The 1290 in a tall bike with long suspension travel would be rather absurd.
Reviews getting better. Great work guys !
Like a Moto2 bike (drool)
About the Triple not steering as quickly, can't you just drop the triple clamps down the forks to the maximum rake angle? Should be a simple fix and make a big difference.
No MT09SP? I really can't figure out why you guys haven't tested one yet.
That and the mt10 are better bikes than these 2
@@anthonylynn1969 mt10 sure, but i would have a striple over a mt09
@@anthonylynn1969 No way! Rode a MT09SP back to back with my 790 Duke and the 790 is a better bike so the 890 would crush it! Ride a 790 or 890 Duke if you get the chance and you'll be grinning like a Cheshire cat for the whole ride, trust me. The MT10 is a fantastic bike but not in the middleweight category like the Striple or Duke (It would be the rich fat uncle with a drinking problem)
@@anthonylynn1969 way different class of bike and price
@@Solrak8O rich fat uncle with drink problem sounds like me 😂😂👍🏽
Sold me on the KTM , love the banter
The only Ktm I’d ever buy again would be the 1290 super duke. Triumph has come a long ways to improve reliability and performance.
Awesome guys. Could not stop laughing! Footage is top notch, including the helmet cam and the audio is spot on.
@@mitchnak1 Okay so internal spacers, that is a pain but at least you only need to do it once unless you get fat. Thank you
@@mitchnak1 I'll be making a trip to the suspension guru then ... again!
I was born in Somerset and it's nice, But Devon, Devon is Heaven. Loving seeing you back out and about, watching from my home in Malaysia.
The ST still has the same problem it had 10 years ago: that light/instrument cluster that sticks wayyyyy too far out in front and looks stupid from the side.
You will only ever see it from the rear
I love the old man, keep him coming back
I think it'd be interesting to compare the specifications of the ktm890 and an original 916 Ducati.
I went from a MT-09, MT-09 with Ohlins to a Street Triple RS. The RS is in a different category.
I'll say Street RS ftw..
If that's what you took from this then you and I must be very different people.
Without understanding all the pommy slang, I have no fucking clue what I just watched! 😂
Street any day. ONE THING that's British and is actually awesome.
The triple is an amazing engine everyone should have a go!
( I know the Triumph is a triple)
Anyway ...
Except for the headlight 🤔
@@neilmckenzie4692 The new one is fugly but I like the headlights on my 2020 one
For how much you bought it and which country? @@neilmckenzie4692
it actually just comes down to looks and unfortunately the ktm looks like the ktm 125 and that's why id never buy one..
Well KTMs all look like insecty aliens to me. Not my kind of thing.
Seems like everyone adores the KTMs when they test them, but nobody actually buys one.
The 790 Duke, 890R Duke and 790 Adventure R in my garage say otherwise.
According to sales numbers KTM is the biggest European motorcycle maker....just behind the Japanese Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha,
@@RealOrbit-Australia I meant the testers, every video I see they say how amazing the machine is...and then they go and buy something else. Maybe it's a reliability thing. I'd have one in a heartbeat!
It’s not an attractive bike
Trumpet all day long. KTM isn't even a contender. Like Aprilia, there are bugger all dealers and you need a good dealer network for either... Triumph have set the bar so brilliantly high! Motorbikes will all get better to meet Triumphs level of quality. Proud of em
