This is my favorite iteration of the kraang. I’m not gonna lie, I never really liked previous iterations of the kraang. I thought they weren’t scary enough. But the kraang in this movie, are AMAZING. Especially kraang 1. Whenever he spoke you could feel his spite. Also ( spoilers )
      .
      .
      .
      .
      .
Whenever Mikey says “what did you do to my brother!” And krang 1 says “improved him-!” That was such a badass line.
Off topic, but I’m happy you saw the triceratons and bishop. If the show comes back, it’s been confirmed that that will be in season 3. Its especially cool because bishop took kraang 2 ( the one eyed one ) captive. So it most likely won’t be the last time we see of her. That’s only if the show comes back though.
Also, about Barron draxum. He actually was supposed to have a role in the movie. The future scene in the beggining was originally going to be 10 minutes. If you want, I can reply to one of your tweets with the character designs for future draxum, future April, ( my favorite ) future hypno and warren, Todd, and Baxter Stockman.
Also, I can show you screenshots from the movie that show some of the above characters deaths. Because in the first four minutes, we actually see quite a few of them.
Great review! So happy you reviewed this movie because we need big names to bright light to the movie in order to save rise. You’re awesome man, keep up the cool work

This movie did it right. LBR when Rise came out it was goofy at first that later had it's own serious moments but this movie shows that it can hang with the previous incarnations of TMNT and it can get as serious as the other's. I thought Raph died and it would've been all Leo's fault.

Draxum wasn’t there because Nickelodeon told the creators and crew that the movie HAD to be able to be seen by newcomers and on its own. That’s also why the Hidden City is never brought up or Big Mama or anyone. Apparently they even had to fight to just get the one small scene with Hypno and Warren. Which was only allowed cuz they were finally able to convince Nick that the 2 didn’t really need explaining for newcomers outside of the fact they’re just villains

I love how the movie adressed Rise!Leo's character flaws and had him learn how to become a proper leader, without undermining Raph's ability. By the end of the movie he definitely stands among the great versions of Leonardo.
Also Rise Krang is horrifying. The Rise Turtles with their mystic powers are so absurdly overpowered, and he just flicks their combined attack away like it's nothing. He's so powerful they never actually beat him the normal way.

It was a great way to keep up the subtlety & nuance Leo’s arc has in the show while also not technically giving away that Leo was officially given the title to anyone who hasn’t finished the show. It was always so natural of him to almost accidentally pick up slack for Raph as leader that you can probably go into the movie at any point of watching the show and be like “yeah that seems about right”. Honestly the balance between the episodic and serial nature of Rise is amazing and I think it all boils down to their focus on nuanced characterization. It’s brilliant!!!

I am about to watch it a third time cause god damn if you look closely the animators didn't just go hard in the action scenes. But there are just these moments that they go hard in general. There are so many scenes where they went the extra mile for just facial expressions, hand gestures, you could read everything by their body language and face and didn't need to say a word for you to understand exactly what they are thinking or feeling.
I also actually have my own thoughts about Rise when it comes to the Leadership role. In every past incarnation, the leadership role went to the most skilled and most disciplined of them. Leo was always the more mature one or at least the one who respected closer to Master Splinters traditional teachings while the other three adapted to more their own styles. But here in Rise everyone kind of is on the same wave length. There is no outstanding student each of them have their own skills and talents and also flaws and hang ups. So I think in Rise the role of "Leader" is actually meant to be a next step in their individual training. Raphael was the leader because he is the oldest brother so it just naturally fell to him first. But for those that watch the series we see his main issues is not his temper, but rather his overprotective nature of his brothers and his tendency to give into pressure. Though a lot of times the pressure he feels is self inflicted and we see that in the movie too, where Raph is trying to break through to Leo about taking the role seriously, Raph says that as the oldest HE has to look out for his brothers all the time, in fear that if he doesn't they'll end up dying under his watch. Raphael needed to learn to TRUST his team to be able to handle themselves and to help him and not need to protect them at all times. Something that the leadership role forced him to do and in the finale that was something he conquered. Raphael matured and grew into not only a complete warrior but more sure of himself as a person.
So now the role has been passed to Leonardo, who is not taking it seriously, he doesn't plan, he relies the heaviest on his mystic powers but his biggest thing is thinking that the ends justify the means and that he has the answers. Thus he as the leader is needing to learn to LISTEN to his team. He needs to cooperate and not take charge and he has to learn the consequences of his actions do not JUST effect him but also his family. Something that he would not learn without being the leader and forced to see first hand even in the harshest of ways, that he has to think beyond himself now when the lives of others are dependent under his choices.
I really like this indication that the leadership role isn't a privilege but a learning opportunity. And maybe if the series were to continue we would have seen Donnie and Mikey also take their turns in being the leader to conquer their fears and flaws and grow, where maybe then after all four brothers had a turn they would decide a permanent one. But that's at least my thoughts on the matter.

I will admit I thought it was a bit harsh what Casey said to leo but leo needed that. He had to learn that he can't let his cookyness get in the way of the mission. The scene when they are in the future was very dark. There was death, blood, and leo swears in that scene. This movie also scared me at some times. I am a sucker for horror movies and what surprised me is that the krang in this non-horror, appropriate for kids (in my opinion) movie are genuinely scary compared to most creatures and monsters in actual horror movies meant for adults.
Also I do want to mention how much I absolutely loved how heavy it got. I adore the exploration of emotions in film and how they act, so seeing Leo grow from this mildly egotistical show-off that ignores his team to this really serious but still misguided state after Raph gets taken and then peaking with that absolutely heartbreaking self-sacrifice (I officially cried more watching this movie than during Endgame, and some tears got wrenched out right at the very beginning).
I haven't seen other TMNT shows or movies specifically due to the visuals. I'm super particular about this kind of stuff so there's actually a fuck ton of stuff I'm interested in but can't watch simply because my eyeballs disagree with it, so Rise was the only TMNT show (and now movie) that was genuinely inviting and never let me down. Even with my sensitivity to second-hand embarrassment (like 200%), I'm just really happy to have found something I don't feel the need to skip through a scene even once. I really, *really* hope this movie does well because the fact that the show didn't even finish with the planned episode count (rushed arcs at the end was the result) crushed me and I really want it to continue. i think it is fair to say this might be the best Krang species in the franchise. like i personally like to think after the crossover specials with the 80's and 2012 versions that the multiverse just has these aliens just venture around, jumping from multiverse to multiverse trying to find multiple worlds to conquer and so forth. like how i would believe the Bay Turtles version was a more ruthless commander of sorts and thus went on he's own or like the 80's Krang, who was just inferior to the rest of he's race and was "put in charge" of another multiverse.
same goes for this version of Krang: came to another dimension, thousands of years before the current timeline, and began growing in numbers and power, advancing their tech to what we seen in the movie and being stopped by Feudal Japan warriors. these Krang, both in stature and power, are much more adapt and stronger with their bodies and thus are way stronger than the Krang from other multiverses. not to mention way more bloodthirsty as they clearly had most of their kind killed in the Prison dimension because they were "weak", let alone out to kill anyone and anything in their way as tyrannical as they were before captured. even shows in their suits as it clearly triples their power and then some. like the team could barely hold back 2 separately and the lead Krang had to be put back in the Prison Dimension.
grant it, this is just my headcannon due to the whole TMNT Multiverse thing brought up over and over again but it makes some sense.

Another show they animated that has equally awesome fight scenes by them is LEGO Monkie Kid (yes, Lego. Except to the contrary, it’s 2D, not stop-motion or CGI!). It’s a show based on the legendary Chinese story Journey To The West (though you barely need to know anything about it to watch the show), presenting itself as a hypothetical sequel set in modern times. There’s probably other people who can explain it a bit better, but that’s the basic gist of it! Its animation is stellar and just as good as Rise of the TMNT - maybe you could check it out sometime!

Normally this would exhaust me… but as an oldest child and a childcare worker with a “mama bear” complex’s, I 1000% would have gone to hell and back and fought off anything to protect my loved ones. It’s such a big sibling move. The whole movie had a chance to be awful with the same plot as every other hero movie (the sky opening over New York literally happens all the time) but the way it was animated, voice acted, and even just the way it was written and paced, it genuinely kept you wrapped in the middle of what was happening. Because it was something done before, they could shift all their focus from writing some convoluted twisty mess of a plot and could focus on just making everything else fantastic. It genuinely had me on edge and concerned. That hasn’t happened in ages during hero movies for me. God I love this show and I love this movie; it’s definitely my favorite of all the versions. YES!!! I've been waiting for you to review this, Jax! The morning of August 5, I immediately turned on my TV, turned on Netflix, and loved everything about the movie. Obviously, the animation speaks for itself. They were willing to multiply the amount of animation put into a normal episode by 20, and the results were fantastic. Not to mention, swears. The move to Netflix likely gave them more freedom there, and I am not mad about it at all (Donnie actually said half-cocked, which was hilarious). I understand the movie doesn't do THAT much to bring in old fans of the previous iterations of the TMNT franchise, but the whole point of it, along with the show itself, was that it was pretty much a fresh start that boosted the comedy, wasn't afraid to get morbid at times, and showcased a style we haven't seen in TMNT. Frankly, I'm not really sure what new iteration of TMNT can be done after Rise in terms of artstyle and animation. Not that an eventual new TMNT needs to top it in those regards, it's just hard (for me, at least) to picture what more can be done with the francise to differentiate itself from previous series.

I really enjoyed this movie. I’d even go as far as to say that it IS the BEST thing to come out of the whole Rise incarnation! I am still one of those people who slightly prefers the more cinematic styled Samurai Jack-ish action of TMNT 2012, but even I gotta say the action in this movie kept me WAY more engaged and glued to my phone then some of the best action of the 2012 show combined (Sorry Ciro). Which is why it’s such a shame that this is most likely the last bit of material that’s gonna come out of this era of the franchise (especially if you look at some of the things that got cut like the originally intended SEASON LONG Krang story arc or this incarnation’s version of The Rat King that was being planned), but if this movie HAS to be the absolute last thing to come out of Rise (even though the movie left some things obviously open), I’d say this series left on a TREMENDOUS high note!
Bravo Ant Ward and Andy Suriano! You guys obviously didn’t get to do as much as you wanted, but you poured your hearts and souls into what was left, and for that you two get my tremendous kudos as creative artists in the hellhole that is the animation business.
Now if only we could BUY this movie to watch it over and over without relying on a single streaming service where it’s hosted. That would be really nice.
Speaking as someone who was once a unfortunate Rise detractor, for those that haven’t seen the series OR this movie, PLEASE check them both out. It IS different from what you’re used to out of this franchise, but I think it’s unique/fun enough to be worth your time.

When I saw the movie for the first time it surprised the HELL out of me when the turtles started to fight the kraang in their base form and they just BLOCKED THEIR HITS even Leo's sword. And not only that they won the fight against all of them without even needing their suits. I had NEVER seen that before. Usually when the suit is gone you stop worrying cause after all, it's just a squishy sentient brain that isn't much of a threat or a fight. It gives the impression that they could win and take down the Earth WITHOUT their suits they just put them on because it simply makes the process faster. So knowing that they made the Shredder armor in the first place and how much it took to stop THAT, mixed with the fact they couldn't even stop an average kraang, it made the idea of the technodrome coming through and them getting the suits all the more terrifying. Shredder was a flea compared to the insane beast that is the kraang. I was legit stressed watching this movie (in a good way!) wondering just what the hell the turtles were gonna do! I like that they left the door open for their return in season 3 though, if/when we ever get one.

Both the Shredder and the turtles are some of the most powerful we've seen said characters be, and Krang absolutely runs circles around them in terms of power. So I would have no doubt that a Turtlea forever 2 would feature Rottmnt Krang as the main villain, and perhaps he manipulates other villains like the other krang and Shredders to do his bidding only to betray them in the end and turn them into mutated tentacle soldiers as it takes generations worth of turtles all across the multiverse just to beat this one dude. I’ve never watched any tmnt content before rise, and I honestly really liked it! I feel like it owns it’s differences to what I’ve heard of the past iterations, I loved the comedy (donnie is largely the main reason I watched past episode 1) I love the character design and how well it handles silouhettes between the four compared to the twin-ness of previous iterations, and the show itself is just so visually astounding and funky! I think it tended to drag on a bit in terms of the boys having to relearn a couple lessons every now and then, but that honestly never actually took anything away from my watching experience. It’s just a cool charming show!
I watched rise to prepare myself for the movie (so many edits showed up on my tik tok fyp,,) and man, it did NOT disappoint. These kids suffering like that dealt me so much psychic damage I almost had to step away and take a breather when the Kraang went into Raph’s memory like that. I felt a pit in my stomach even in the opening scenes when I realized that Raph and Donnie were already gone in the apocalypse world, I can’t imagine what kind of weight that put on Leo’s shoulders knowing how the Foot originally got the key. This movie was so tense and sad and funny and hype, I really hope it does well enough for there to be a rise season 3!

I liked Rise. I hate why people didn't give it a chance. it was fun. They actually felt like gen z teens. And they really explored their relationship s with one another. I really hope people watch the movie enough to hope for a rise trilogy of movies. I wanna see slash and metalhead and Baxter in this universe. Also I really loved girl Casey throughout get arc and felt kind of robbed of not seeing her in this

Honestly, now that ya mention it, if Turtles Forever 2 were to happen, i could somehow see our new Krang being the biggest threat there (if involved)
if not, well maybe they could try and make another unseen TMNT villain in Rise that we haven't seen yet (like say the Triceradons or a multiverse-jumping Tempestra) the big bad
But mad props to comin back on the turtles review for my boi Rise Casey

I have come to appreciate Rise more since it’s initial release. And while it’s still not for me and I’ll never fully watch the series, I will forever sing praises about the animation and characters and just how creative they got with this iteration of the turtles. But the movie, just knocked it out of the park. Full on surprised me and kept me intrigued every step of the way. I will definitely come back to this movie more than once, and I just can’t praise it enough. They did so well, and it makes me sad that this is probably the last we’ll see of this version. I’m not sure if it’s still cancelled, but it seems like this might be it. If I’m wrong though, then great! (Honestly, the animation is absolutely my favourite. Got me to watch Lego Monkie Kid too cause I heard the same studio animated it and I was like “Oh sick.” So yeah, can’t give enough hype to the animation.)

I absolutely adore the art direction in Rise. I love the shape language and differentiation with the character designs that immediately show off their personality when you first see them! As a kid who grew up on the 2003 series I had problems telling the brothers apart and the unique character designs in Rise really helped with that! It's also clear that the artists had such a fun time utilizing perspective and timing and it makes the fight scenes in the series and movie absolutely wonderful to watch.

personally the movie got me into watching the rise show. I barely watched any tmnt so Rise was technically the first one I watched and OMG I LOVE IT. I love the small details, the expressions, animation slays at every scene, etc. So seeing the Kraang were this cool in the movie, I expected they were scary in every adaptation? I was very wrong lol. Also I'm glad to see og tmnt fans watching Rise and the movie because I know a lot of people were put off by it for it's drastic difference. Rise being the first show I watched made it my favorite? Idk if it's because it was the first one I watched or because I hadn't watched any before. Or maybe just the art/animation/voice acting (I love Donnie and Leo's voice actors sm in Rise) but Rise is currently my favorite. That could change tho once I finish 2012! Ty for making these videos, I love hearing people talk about things I'm so interested in.

This movie says a lot in the sense that Rise can get dark when it wants to, after watching the series and watching the film I’ve got to say that it was a fun ride for those turtles. My only complaints were that Leo’s transition to leader’s never brought up and no characters or locations prior to the movie are brought up or shown.

Unfortunately that was Nick's fault. They wanted the movie to be watchable by viewers who haven't watched the series before so the creators weren't allowed to have any of their original characters in it, they had to fight to even have the hippo man and worm guy appear for the first few minutes

I saw Rise of the TMNT movie recently and it's pretty solid. The fights in the film were god tier but I kind of prefer the fight between the Turtles and the Shredder more IMO. But it's still awesome. I kind of love RotTMNT's take on the Krang/Utrom. It's a fusion between Carnage and Shuma-Gorath. A literal definition of Cosmic horror. Casey Jones was great but I wanted to know more about him and his future. Like how Donnie and Raph died? Or how did April helped make the Resistance against the Krang? I was legit curious about that. And I love the arc they gave Leonardo. I hope Rise of TMNT show plus movie(and the unmade season 2 episodes) gets a bluray release. Make a bluray release of fred Wolf's tmnt show, the TMNT 2k3 show and 2012's TMNT show while you at it.
And yes I would love to see a Turtles Forever 2.

Great review! I love Rise! Definitely one of faves. Raph is my favorite in this show and this is my favorite incarnation of him. The finale of the show gave me chills. The movie on the other hand was mostly OK.
I wish we didn't have to go through ANOTHER apocalyptic future arc. Not even singling out TMNT but the trope in general. I've seen it enough times to predict how the story would go.
Raph was my highlight throughout the movie as he tries to get through Leo's thick skull the importance of working together and trusting his family. While I love the message, wasn't that literally the lesson they all taught Raph in the finale? It's redundant and led to my boy getting maimed and kidnapped. (Not cool Leo...)
Aside from that, I did enjoy the Krang. Definitely the coolest incarnation of them imo. I couldn't get enough of their mechs. Combined with their ability to remove the turtles' mystic powers made the threat level 100% more menacing.
Not a fan Casey here. Circling back to what I mentioned earlier, this was the guy who came back to the past to fix the apocalyptic future. I don't think he added anything to the story outside of being a plot device. I was bummed Cassandra wasn't introduced outside of a 10 second mention at the end. When she was revealed to be this show's Casey in the finale, I was BLOWN AWAY. *Chef's kiss* I audibly gasped because they built her up so well.
All and all the movie was OK. Animation was top tier, even surpassing the finale tbh. The story was centered around Leo because why not. This lack luster feeling probably has to do with the show/movie being restricted by Nickelodeon to end ASAP so that really can't be helped. Sad that Mikey and Donny didn't really have much to do beyond being the fodder brothers who had random side stories that some how worked out perfectly to advance the story.
Personally, I think if they ended with the series finale this show would be perfect. Instead, it felt more like a whimper.

I've never been much of a TMNT fan. I knew it existed, and I knew the main characters and villains and whatnot, and I gotta say, Rise is, to me, the absolute freshest. Completely new designs, each turtle feels new and unique, the Shredder is an absolute MONSTER, and Krang. Oh. Don't even get me STARTED on Krang. Dude out here whooping the turtle's asses in his SQUID body. Then when he gets his armor, he looks like a damn KING.
So yeah, Rise is pretty awesome.

I fell out for a long time, and just now, last Saturday, I have gone FULL TMNT CRAZY. My fixations get really bad to the point sometimes it’s hard for me to normally function but when I tell you it was worth it re-binging most of the tv shows. It’s ridiculous of how horribly obsessed I’ve become ☠️ it’s been forever since I’ve been this fixated on something, and the last thing was STHH. Ridiculous HDNAK

I agree with you when it come to rise and the comedy, i could appreciate the show for what is was in season 1 and felt a hint of the story but the way episodes played out i could just not get into but i felt that season 2 especially the later episodes had more of a balance with the story and the humour so i actually liked season 2 especially the final few episodes . Overall, rise had amazing animation ,voice acting, character acting and fight scenes for both seasons and i reaaaaally enjoyed the movie, it had a great balance of action, comedy and heart that was just really well done. Also, the new Casey Jones is now my favourite character based on his design (which is sick) and the scene where he cussed out Leo.
