I love Splinter's backstory and how his actions led him to be the person he is now, especially how he wouldn't know how to properly care for his kids as his mom left him and how he left his grandpa. And I saw a caption on tiktok that said "Splinter knows the Hamato way, but sometimes he looks at his boys and wonders how his mother choose duty over him" And I've never recovered from it. He does care about them, he's not a great dad but he's trying to be. He was scared of losing them just like how he lost his mother to her duty to protect the clan from the Shredder (? I think she died to the Shredder idk)
How'd she die from shredder if it was trapped/sealed at the time? She either died of age/on a random situation while doing her duty, or maybe the foot clan attacked her idk
@@agustinberto6138 probably old age she had to be prepared for the next attack meaning she had to leave everything and waste her life away because of the CHANCE shredder would return
I feel so bad for sleeping on this show when it first came out. Rise of the tmnt is such a refreshing reboot of the turtles and I sincerely hope we get to see more of it.
Also I really love that since episode 1 they stablish "April is our best friend in the whole world". In that episode no one thinks of her as a fifth wheel or a damsel in distress, they all agree she is their best friend. They are always on board in including her in their plans and she has a lot more personality.
Not only that, but she is NO one's Love interest. She's allowed to be her own person, have her own interests, be strong from the start, and not need to "be trained" or be held back while the boys get all the glory. She's every bit as part of the team as the rest of them. She's smart, she's funny, she's sassy, and she's not perfect. Socially awkward, tries too hard and can sometimes be too passionate, has a temper, sometimes feels insecure, and NONE of those things hold her back or slow her down "because she's a girl." Rise April isn't just the best April ever, she's one of the BEST women I've seen since Avatar.
The biggest difference for Mikey isn't his personality but how his family treats him. 2012 Mikey also stood up for himself and often was the family therapist but he was treated like the village idiot, despite having his smart moments too. Most of the Mikey-centric episodes from 2012 have him fuck up something important in a dumb way, or him being right about something and no one believing him. And it never gets resolved! There's no arc where his family learns to trust his judgement! 2018 Mikey is the beloved baby of the family, but he's also INCREDIBLY strong and mystically gifted. And even though his brothers treat him like he's a child sometimes, he's still respected and heard.
to add to this as a 2003 fan, 03 Mikey is kind of like the 2012 Mikey, but Michelangelo there DID learn from his past errors, like in the episode Grudge Match he really stepped up and actually listened to Leo, and Leo, even in his depression heard Mikey's own fears and understood them, but still pushed Mikey. Mikey and Leo in the 2003 show had a great understanding of each other. To the point where IT'S MIKEY not Donatello the smart one who states outright how hard it must be for Leo to be the leader, as him being the leader allows everyone ELSE to be who they want to be. Mikey in 03 is observant when he needs to be, comedic when he needs to be, but when things gets real this turtle brings his A game 100%! Mikey has a good relationship with all his brothers in the 03 show, also shown when he gets seriously hurt, they all go mama bear mode especially Raph. But it's not that way with just Mikey either, something I really liked was when Leo got poisoned it was Donatello who stood by his side and protected his big brother when he was out of commission. Switch ups like that were nice to see.
@@TheRibottoStudios honestly, that's the kind of thing I love about Mikey. He's layered. In 2012, we also see that he's not a complete screw up. He does understand when he needs to be serious. As seen in the season 2 finale when he hugs Raphael to get him to calm down so he doesn't possibly get killed. He may be the baby of the group, but he does have more going on his brain than people give him credit for.
Adding on to that, I'll say this about Mikey in 2012, they did give him some notable skills. Before 2012, Mikey was just the "party dude;" Leo was the best ninja, Raph the muscle, and Donnie had smarts. Mikey could hold his own fine, but his brothers usually outshined him in the action stuff. 2012, they did give him some subtle changes. If you watch, Mikey now is the better acrobat. He moves a bit faster and has better agility. We also see that he works more instinctually (aka, "Mikey does not think" scene) and has potential if he were to apply himself. I think both these shows have done good stuff in terms of developing Mikey into a more realized character.
What I really liked about ROTTMNT is that they give the characters more personality instead of just Leo”Serious leader”Raph”Anger issues” Donnie”big nerd who wants a GF” Mikey”the dumb one”April”The girl that needs help every episode” they give them different emotions like it shows that they aren’t just one character trait and I love that.
That’s why rise is my favorite Mikey! It was nice to have a Mikey that wasn’t just dumb and his brother punching down at him for it, sometimes literally!
I also have to say, that cool fight scenes aside, this series has some of the BEST facial animation I've seen. The range of crazy expressions these characters make is absolutely fascinating and hilarious. They were simplified just enough to give so much room for creativity. I'm definitely not going to be able to watch the new one for some time. Not because it's bad, but simply because I too am not ready to give up these boys and how much they pushed the envelope. The few images we've seen of the new iterations feel like it's going to fall right back into old territory, and frankly, kind of don't want to go back to the same old tropes.
Same, Rise is such a standout from those incarnations that stand before and I love it. I feel like it would be too quick to turn back to the originals because it feels like there should be more to the story.
@@tobsonasanya4765 For sure, each show had it's strengths! But that's the thing, it's been done before already. Personally I don't want to see the same thing again with just a different paint job. I want them to keep pushing into new territory and I simply worry that when the new one comes out, it will be less about finding new and interesting ways of telling these stories and more about helping the investors feel safe by doing what's already been done. Just the same old thing for the new generation. I'm not saying that's necessarily what is happening, but it is a fear of mine that comes with any retelling of a beloved franchise.
As an autistic person, Donnie was amazing. His aversion to touching weird textures/physical contact was incredibly relatable, and Raph’s line in the movie of “This isn’t a hug Donnie, it’s a rescue” just hit me in the heart man. His family knows about his quirks and accepts and works around it. Also love how they did low-empathy. Typically they’ll show it as no-empathy and something to be “fixed” and how it makes you a “bad person.” Donnie wasn’t like that and it was great to see. I love him so much just for how incredibly relatable his reactions and quirks are. (There’s defs better ways to explain it, this is just from my experience)
I also love that hes not ALWAYS against touch. He initiates hugs sometimes and I love that so much because its not just black or white. Sometimes, some people have days where they really can stand more than on bad days and its nice to have a character that portrays many levels of the spectrum. :)
@@robyyyne YES EXACTLY! There are some days where I’m very affectionate with my friends and family and others where even the thought of being touched makes me wanna take off my skin with a cheese grater. Rottmnt really went “yeah it IS a spectrum” as compared to treating it like a spice meter. Out of all the shows to be understood by……
Real talk, this show/film actually helped me to understand myself a bit better. I'm on the Spectrum (high-functioning, but I have my quirks) and I've never been able to explain why I hate touching certain fabrics/shirt buttons, or why I'm so easily distracted, or why I love dubstep-esque music, or why I just have a tendency to not understand social queues or make loud noises/actions when I'm excited. I always thought those were things that I did cos I'm "attention-seeking" (I'm called that a wee bit) or just plain weird, but the videos looking at Donnie's ASD/Neurodivergent moments actually made me realise that I'm not doing it for that, it's just a stim/quirk of mine
I think the biggest problem was the time between 2012 ending and rise starting. We would normally have like 2-3 years between incarnations and so when I first saw rise I saw it as to different. But now I’ve watched it I love it and want more.
Yea that was a big problem with it, 2012 was so good, and they could have done more with it, but then going to a drastic change like that was a bit of a mistake.
@@CellSpex That's true, but given how radically different this show was, I still think it would've been not well recieved. I mean, that's the fandom for you.
@@candycover That's what I legit said to rise fans and they couldn't handle my opinion like everyone was bashing me for saying it wasn't liked because of the sudden drastic changes. I'm pretty sure one of the persons who were bashing me liked your reply
I love how the quote about Leo's main characterization throughout the franchise being "The Leader" which is a job not a character trait works just as well for Donnie, his main characterization is "The tech guy" Which is also a job, not a personality. Go figure that it feels like both of them are the most focused on and have the most character and personality in this series.
One thing I didn't see mentioned here is that all the turtles are different ages. Raph being the leader because he's the oldest at 15 while donnie and Leo are the middle children at 14 and mikey at 13 and how that affects their personality. People compained about them being childish when they are literally children, of course they're going to be childish.
Right?! I always think it's weird when people say they're too childish, it's in the name that they are TEENs but I feel like when people think teen they think of the older years of being a teenager since that's what a lot of shows focus on when characters are younger
It's probably because from what I've seen, a lot of old iterations make the "teen" act and sound like full aged adults and they're mature usually and they know what to do. Then they see rise which is how teens actually are, nearly freshly teens, and they're "stupid" or they're "dumb" just because they act like kids. I love that they act like kids!!! Immature, stupid, dumb kids that make mistakes, are learning, don't always win, and don't always get the outlook they want. It's an awesome way of making a show!!!
The action drew my attention, but I stayed for the brother dynamic. I will never not praise how absolutely non-toxic and loving these brothers are and I wish we saw more of this. They’re not perfect, but they’re always realistic without using the cruch of constant bickering that makes me wonder why they wouldn’t disown each other.
This show is the reason why I got into TMNT, everything appealed to me so much. The animation, the art style, the turtle redesigns, everything! I'm on s2 now but I also started the 2012 show! But I never even seen of ROTTMNT, I only was aware after the movie, and I just thought the movie was the reboot! Not even knowing a show was attached to it! I love Donnie a lot as a fellow Autistic, he's also why I started Rise because I only knew the very basics of TMNT. I adore how they all respect each other in Rise, I hate how they keep hitting Mikey in 2012 >:( and in Rise they dont do that. They all respect and love each other how they are, sure with the occasional mocking because they are brothers, but at least they don't hit Mikey for just being himself 😭
Ikr, their dynamic is to die for, I was so tired of 2012 brothers acting like flatmates, it's like rise Donnie said about his bros that they felt like roommates sometimes, but he just didn't see what is happening with 2012 guys. They are ninjas first, team second, and brothers last 😮💨😮💨😮💨
@@tobsonasanya4765 I mean, they did, but it was not enough in comparison to how they yelled, hit and mocked each other. Like, I would fall into depression or ran away from a family like that, sorry not sorry, realisticallly they would be on the verge of becoming disfunctional (or are, depending on how you interpret it), especially after Splinter's death, also, uhm, like every other fanfiction is about that problem in their relationship, because it's just that many people who also see it. The show is great in other aspects, absolutely, especially comedy, but they usually show family bonds only in very critical situations, and it's as if they're telling viewers that THAT's how you should behave, be tough, minimal affection, and keep distance from your fam (and other borderline toxic masculinity traits mixed up there) until they're short of being on the verge of dying. That's just how I remember them. They aren't plain awful brothers, but they sure could use a LOT of counseling, y'know.
Donnie is definitely my favorite part of this show. It’s so nice to see a character on screen that acts like me and doesn’t get put down or mocked for it. His family doesn’t treat him any differently while still accommodating his needs, (shown especially in the movie when each brother gets their own individual scene of them making an effort to understand and help him), and it’s very uplifting to see a character celebrated for while not being reduced to just their autistic traits :)
Don't get me wrong, Donnie from Rise is admittedly the coolest, but 2012 series Donnie is the most relatable. The genius level of Donnie in Rise version is borderline God-like, creating high tech weapon from nothing. While 2012 version of Donnie's invention seems to be made from junk or spare parts, which is more grounded and realistic than Donnie's overly sci-fi tech. It almost as if Rise Donnie is a so much of overcorrection to the way his character has been treated in past iterations that he can come across as being a bit overpowered. I get that Donnie's a genius, but I think his genius should be at least somewhat grounded in reality.
@@realityshifter3399 Well this is a cartoon based on anime proportions so it makes sense his tech skills are over the top. But he's far from overpowered otherwise his brothers would let him do all the work
@@dewolf123 Yeah, because his brothers literally have mystical abilities, so they need to make Donnie tech skills over the top in order to be on par with the other Turtles.
one thing I also love about Rottmnt Donnie is that, I myself am autistic and thereby disabled- He is a softshell, and he built his own disability aid to help with living with this shell. And they made this disability aid badass!! I love this version of him so much-
Me and my brother started watching this together and maaaan it was so weird seeing brothers just be so good to each other more then fight in a show after being so used to bickering or bullying as the entire dynamic in so many shows. We pointed out how many of their interactions reminded us of our relationship and childhood and it made alot of the dialog/jokes so much funnier. Especially as an older brother I'm happy seeing shows where the older sibling or siblings aren't just some absolute monster to the younger ones or even act as an antagonist. It's just old as hell to me so I eat up more relatable brother dynamics which this show nails.
Yeah rise fixes a problem I have with a lot of shows, which is how the characters are always arguing. It gets annoying really quickly. Rottmnt on the other hand, reminds me of how I actually interact with my own siblings. We love each other and get along, but we also tease each other. It was really refreshing to see that
Fr. I think the wholesome dynamic between the brothers is my favorite aspect of the show. Like yes, they constantly annoy each other and get into squabbles, but they also clearly love each other and have each others' backs no matter what. No other incarnation has had the brothers be this physically affectionate or genuinely say "I love you" to each other this often. The whole family dynamic in general is just really nice, bonus points for when they're spending time with Splinter, April, and Draxum. I can't believe we were robbed of an episode starring the whole family just hanging out together
As a late fun fact, there was a scrapped episode idea of when we were going to see how Mikey and Raph used to be best friends and how they fell out into the dynamic they have on the series. What we LOST
Also April and Cassandra are IMO the definition of actually well written "strong female characters". They have actual personalities, interesting motivations and reactions, and don't have to say they're strong and can handle themselves, THEY JUST PROVE THAT THEY CAN. So of course this series got shot down while examples like PPG 2016, every Disney remake female protagonist, Carol Danvers, and Space Jam 2 Lola are frustratingly popular/successful/BOTH.
I think Cassandra was a bit of a push. I figured the changes to April were just the writers keeping the narrative tight by removing the need for a Casey Jones (she's even armed with athletic equipment). Frankly, I just assumed Cass was gonna be Jennika from the IDW comics. Then the Cass bomb dropped, and I just could not shake the feeling that the writers were prepping to win at diversity bingo by giving us a multi-racial lesbian couple. It then went on hiatus so we got to stew in that for a while.
@@ccggenius the writers for rise were never the type of people to do things like that, they just write what they like and they even said that they want to stay away from romance so everything they do regarding to characters is just them having fun. Cassandra is one of their favorite characters for that reason because they could make her into something similar but different. They already get hate for changing things for turtles so they technically make it even worse with the hate everytime they change another thing. They basically taking a risk in favour of their preferred story telling and it’s awesome.
Yeah, I never really had a problem with Cassandra, especially when the movie came out and revealed that the Casey we know from other renditions isn’t her in this version, but rather her son, and I like that decision since in the 2012 version, I always saw Casey as the weakest fighter (still capable, just not as strong as the others) and Rise virtually built up on that by making Casey younger than all of them.
I think one of my favorite aspects of Rise is indeed the brother dynamic. In the 2012 version or the 03 version even, the dynamic is there, but they didn't really....switch things up a lot. I can't remember an episode that showcase Donatello and Raphael interacting a lot, or Mikey and Raph, or Leo and Don. It's usually just Leo and Raph hang out a lot, and Don and Mikey hang out a lot. I think that's cause of the whole opposites attract thing, but it would've been nice to see more variety, which Rise does. I god damn love the disaster twins it reminds me of my own relationship with my brother.
@@demdem7946 yea I'm pretty sure in rise raph and donnie are the only two who didn't get an episode focusing on their dynamic, which is a shame bc I wanted to see them interact with each other more :/
I'm so sad this show got slept on, it was extremely underrated. The character designs were so good, the animation was sooo good. Genuine one of my favorite animated series ever. PLEASE KEEP SUPPORTING THIS VERSION YALL.
The episode where the boys fight for the chance to hug splinter hits so hard for a number of reasons. Splinter isn't trying to manipulate them with emotional distance. He gets interrupted when trying to set a prize to motivate and they interrupt because they value the love and family affection of a hug more than anything else he can offer. It shows his flaws as a father, but also shows it is in no way malicious or purposeful. It also plays into the aspect that his former life as a movie star desensitized him to normal and healthy dynamics. As a human he hid his natural accent to be more American on the silver screen. Explaining why he sounds so different in flashback moments. It also shows why he would put value in the names for the kids but not use them as much because he can easily become overwhelmed. He was good intentioned but lived most of his life following orders and directives and lacked personal dedication and ambition. (Both from his lineage and from working in film) His callousness is balanced out by his hands off approach and general support of the boys. Though it's not limitless and he does discipline them occasionally. Even so, with a good foundation of martial arts training on the body, mind, and soul, with the addition of modern influence the turtles became very supportive of healthy boundaries and affection. Which is why they put a lot of stock into respecting Splinter and learning from him. It's a very layered set of circumstances that makes the hug episode so interesting and telling of their dynamic. Since if he was more distant, emotionally unavailable, or mean they wouldn't care enough to fight for something as simple as a hug from their father.
you should say martial arts training on the body, mind, and spirit because soul and spirit are not totally the same thing Because there is a difference that difference is that our soul is our thought not ourselves but our spirit is ourselves and our conscience is our senses not ourselves
Now that you mentioned it, at first I was a bit sad and shock when they change splinter from being the wise master to a lazy couch potato yet good hearted dad. When I saw the episode focuses on him being Loi jitsu in the past, it hit me that we don't know anything about splinter or why he's the lazy couch potato like Ice king from adventure. At first you thought Ice king is just this crazy old wizard that you don't give much of a care for who he actually is until we get to the Holly Jolly episode where they show Ice king has a tragic backstory. So seeing splinter's past lore and how much he actually cared for his sons touch my heart.
they really punched us in the gut with splinter's backstory!! it very genuinely made me sob. And the female characters arent reduced to crushes/love interests!!! it's SO refreshing to see a show where boys and girls can just be FRIENDS without the writers forcing an awkward relationship arc on every. single. girl.
Originally, April wasn't a love interest, she was a mature woman, who was kind of the turtles big sister (original Mirage comics, 2003 TMNT series). :)
WHO IS SAYING IT DOESNT LOOK GREAT?! I would say one of this shows BIGGEST upsides is the visuals and animation, it is TOP TEIR quality. The dynamism, the choreography, the jokes enhanced by visual subversions, colors, expressions, perspective, I could go ON about all that the animation in this show has to offer!
To be honest, ROTTMNT is full of references to the past iterrations but it's not as in-your-face as in the 2012 series which makes it even more rewarding when you figure it out. Like connecting the voice of 2012 Tiger Claw and 2018 Splinter with a few comments about Splinter's species as you pointed out, or background characters in the zoo resembling Bebop and Rocksteady near their animal counterparts during the oozesquitos outbreak implying their mutation (which took me a couple of rewatches to notice), the ice cream kitty, Shelldon using 2012 Mikey's catchfraze while being voiced by the same person, the mention of metalhead and many more that i can't think of right now. I just respect that a lot and love how satisfying it is to connect the dots!
I love the Lou Jitsu take on Splinter. I would argue that this is my favorite iteration because he’s more than just a wise mentor. He’s layered and it’s always hype to hear the boys shout “Hot Soup!”
I particularly love splinter's mom using it because it shows that she was still proud and approved of the person he became even if he neglected his duties
I like this version of him best because it's sorta realistic. In the Rottmnt series, the love of his life kidnaps him after he proposes to her and forces him to fight in her Battle Nexus. He's depressed and desperate for an escape. He learns that he's being used to harm innocent creatures, tries to save them, only to end up having to take care of four mutant turtles. He'd already been through a lot, adding onto the fact he got turned into a rat. Things kept adding on and on, so him being a laxy (a lil bit depressed) couch potato makes sense.
After watching Rise, Splinter reminds me a LOT of the 03's Ancient One. Who was also played comedically but in reality, is a tragic father, who lost all his children, then his son's pet comes to him mutated, with four little ones... It's easy to see when you rewatch both, and get through it that The Ancient One and Leo's arc was definitely an inspiration for Rise Splinter and Leo's connection.
It was a hiatus at first, but 6 weeks before the finale was released, they were told that oh by the way you’re cancelled- There’s so many storyboards with voice acting! They had plans! And they had to scrap it and work hard for those 6 weeks! The scriptwriter wrote the script overnight! And they usually spend like a month on animating one episode like the finales! Rise I love you so much
one thing to note: the turtles are of different ages here! (in the series) april- 16 raph- 15 leo- 14 donnie- 14 mikey- 13 in the movie theyre all 2 years older :D this is why raph takes the leader responsibility because hes the oldest and feels obliged to take care of his brothers :"D
Excellent breakdown of the series! I think the only thing I can disagree on is the 'Leo becoming a leader out of nowhere' thing. It's definitely a subtle current throughout the series, but Leo does display moments of leadership, especially when he managed to outsmart Big Mama (a notoriously sly villain), something that I think contributed to Splinter's eventual decision. But, something that people tend to miss is how *unhappy* Raph is as the leader. He's not acting as a brilliant leader, he's acting as a scared, overprotective big brother. This is something the movie pushes pretty blatantly, and he snaps at Leo for not understanding this. Raph is a good leader, even if he lacks the strategist brain that Leo has, but it's also obvious that he can't keep handling it. We see him getting overwhelmed from time to time, especially during the Hamato Ninpo unlock scene when he finally breaks down. Leo, for all his unwillingness to be the responsible one since he's used to no one expecting it from him, is capable of taking on this responsibility. Whenever things get hard and Raph is out of commission, he does step up to the plate. The only time we see him lose his cool is during the movie, which is more than reasonable considering his brother has been taken hostage by homicidal aliens. Speaking about the movie, I think the big thing about Leo's character, in the beginning, can actually be explained by a seemingly throwaway line about how he copes with difficult situations, AKA his gravitation towards overconfidence and comedy. He is seemingly acting out even more than normal because even in the series, Leo wasn't this consistently arrogant. (He had his moments, but we also saw that he had a more subdued, reasonable nature when his insecurities weren't biting him in the ass.) It's obvious that the idea of having to be responsible for his brothers isn't something he's prepared for, especially because of the lack of encouragement from his family on his skills. Also, I do believe them not mentioning the leader stuff in the movie was purely to make the film viewer friendly, but in a deleted scene at the end of the movie, it does acknowledge Leo being the leader! He's still doubtful of his skills, but Raph does encourage him. (I don't have the deleted scene on hand as it was posted on Twitter some time ago, but it might have been uploaded here on YT by someone already) Anyway, there's still a chance for the series to come back! The creators have stated that the series hasn't been officially canceled but put on hold, and they mentioned that if the movie did well enough, there is a chance for Nickelodeon to revive the series! So, here's to hoping for that! Edit: Found the deleted scene for those who were curious! Here it is: ruclips.net/video/fTytTYK2K-8/видео.html
this is such a great breakdown of Raph's character! I never considered that he would be so overwhelmed by being leader but now it's staring me in my face lol!
I think after the 2003 iteration and 2012 iteration, where there were comedic moments, yet the overall tone was serious, people including myself, were looking at this with their skepticals on. The 2003 series was dark and looked into each Turtles psyche in interesting ways via solo episodes or pitting a Turtle with someone else, like Raph with a child, Donnie with an artist, Leo with another mentor, Mikey with Splinter. The 2012 series was more comedic, but had darker moments, such as Splinter's death. It was hard not to look at this iteration, and go "wait what?" BUT after giving it a chance I realized this is actually the second best iteration after the 2003 version. For me, for me. Each brother feels distinct, I honestly love the change up in the group dynamic, with the order now being Raphael, Donatello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo. And I love the turtles being based on actual real life turtles. Leo is a red eared slider, from his red markings, Mikey is a box turtle, and like Leo and Don can hide in his shell, Donnie is a soft shell turtle, and Raph is a snapping turtle. The reason why Don wears the battle shell, is because of his softer shell making him vulnerable, which they address in the movie. And honestly, the species each fit each brother REALLY well too. I would LOVE to see another crossover event with the 03 Turtles and these boys, cause BET Raph and Leo would be STUPEFIED to see themselves in such a new light. And honestly one of my all time favorite moments is Donnie going "I'd probably say something like look over there-PUSH!" because he actually says push it's hysterical. And I like that they seem to kind of take on fanon ideas in this iteration too. Not to mention the animation is downright incredible at times.
I love how Donnie actually says the words of an action, like instead of sneezing he just says the word, or just goes "Scoff!". Or how he would say "Nothing bad will happen... he said sarcastically." just out loud.
there's been a fan campaign going to get season 3, but idk how often that kinda shit actually works :( i mean i hope it does but idk how probable it is
Yeah, I really hate when I listen too much to critiques. The first time I watched the Owl House, I only got like 7 episodes in because I was being over-critical and people's opinions were affecting my viewing. Re-watching it and catching up I wonder what the heck I was on about??? The pilot and a few first episodes were a little iffy at times, but the 1st season was already pretty good and the 2nd season blew it out of the park.
@@joyc.e.7511 Yeah. I like Disney's Planes, maybe because of nostalgia, and it’s sequel. It is hated just because it's a spinoff. Sequels are hated just because they are sequels.
Ye, usually I'd get some critics like a character is toxic or they're mary sues/gary stu or how easily the villain was forgiven; things like that. But ppl was just generally saying "I don't like the change" like leo isn't the leader and their weapon is different and they're different species and they see some goofiness and its thought another ttg! Show. Tho ye the show probably should've waited a bit after the 2012 ended to give some time, its disappointing how many was quick to turn away from it.
Rise of the TMNT was a REAL breath of a fresh air, it tried to do things differently and be bold with the new direction that it was going. Sometimes just, "doing things differently", is good. Also, the ANIMATION is just amazing to look at, maybe one of the best looking animation that I've seen in western cartoon shows.
My issue was that I really didn't like Splinter's depiction, so I didn't bother trying the series again after 2 episodes. Thanks to this review, I will definitely try to look past my initial impressions and wait for the story to unfold.
@@Rikrobat Definitely give it a shot! They definitely depict Splinter in a different way than usual, but when you get to his backstory (haha holy SHIT his backstory), everything falls into place, and it's incredible. Also, once you get past the initial "hey where's the wise old master from the OG series" thing, it's really refreshing seeing a Splinter who's the Turtles' dad first and master second imo. They're a lot more casual with him which opens up some very interesting character interactions.
@@getheidea - I’m absolutely going to go in with this new information and give the story a chance to tell itself. I think it was a combination of design and behaviour that was jarring. I was okay with him not being a wise master, but my initial impression being “Homer Simpson” made it so hard to keep watching. As Cellspex described, sometimes “too much new” is jarring and difficult to process. And this is a big reason why I don’t mind spoilers of something-this additional context actually makes me interested in seeing the execution. If the only recommendation was “just try again,” I wouldn’t feel as motivated. Knowing that the characterization has a progression makes me feel invested rather than ambivalent. Thank you for the encouragement~
@@Rikrobat oh I'm the exact same way with spoilers, so I totally get you. Sometimes knowing something cool is going to happen can really help you push through slow eps in a show. With that in mind, I do want to let you know that the first few eps of Rise ARE on the lighter/sillier side. I personally enjoy them as character interaction pieces, but the plots are pretty goofy--I get the sense that the creators were told to cater to a younger audience at first. But after those initial eps, you can tell the writers got more leeway to get more serious and the lore (and fight scenes) really starts picking up, making the show go from good to great. Just wanted to warn you in advance though, you might have to power through a few eps before you get to the REALLY good stuff.
@@getheidea - See, my gold standard is still the 80s cartoon, which is absolutely ridiculous but I love it because that’s what I grew up with. I enjoy the 2012 reboot, but the 80s version has my nostalgic heart. So I’m definitely open to silly and lighthearted stuff, especially if it’s heading in a narratively interesting direction. Thank you so much for the info!
This show deserves to come back man. Wish people's voices would get through to Nickelodeon. #SaveROTTMNT #SaveRiseoftheTMNT #UnpauseROTTMNT #UnpauseRiseoftheTMNT #SaveRiseofTMNT #RiseSeason3 #TMNT
I know it’s been years and the likelihood of Rise being brought back is very low, especially since Nickelodeon cares more about money than making good shows these days, but I still hope it’ll be brought back. I just can’t quit you Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 🥺
The 2012 series even had a reference to the movies. There’s an episode where the turtles and April are in an elevator and like on the film Mickey is trying to tap his nunchucks to the rythem of the elevator but in here Ralph punches him out of annoyance
Yes. Rise is amazing. Great animation, actually funny, the emotional moments hit just right. And yes,I sadly also hesitated to give Rise a chance,as a kid who adored 2012,and I do think Rise got announced a tiny bit too quickly for its own good. Rise deserves love, adoration, respect, and I'm happy the movie brought light to it cause it is truly unique and needs more appreciation. #UnpauseRiseOfTheTMNT
This is a message to 2012 TMNT Fans. This show was incredible. This show is valid. This show has the baddest, sickest, gnarliest action scenes to ever grace the company of Paramount. We still have the best Shredder tho(And, the best Leo and I say that as a Sonic and Randy Cunningham fan).
@@candycover I agree and I'm not even a Leo fan I love Donnie. But Leo's depression arc in the 2003 show is just not gonna be beat in terms of turtle writing. They haven't done anything like it since, because I think they know they can't even try lol. They KINDA have something close in the 2012 show where Leo was in a coma, but it just reminds me of the 2003 show that did it better with Tales of Leo. Seeing Raph break down was rough.
@@TheRibottoStudios The fact that they were saying Leo was only classified as the Leader shows they don't understand the character, Hell are they that bad that they couldn't make him intresting as still the leader?
@@candycover RIGHT?! Again it's why I think 03 Leo is the best Leo. He has GREAT moments of being kinda funny and at ease with his brothers, but also moments of being emotionally vulnerable, and I love that he has a good moment with I think each brother? I could be wrong though. But he does have a good mentor moment with Mikey during Grudge Match, moments with Raph of course, and during Tales of Leo seeing Don's perspective of Leo is nice. But I really can't remember an episode that focuses on him AND Don. Hmm.
I was one of those 2012 fans who disliked Rise mainly because it came out right when the 2012 series ended and I just wasn't ready to move on from my Turtles yet. But after watching Rise's first couple episodes I was hooked. It truly is a perfect blend of Western animations expressive characters, comedy, quirkiness, action, pacing and dialogue with Eastern animations anime visual gags, climactic payoffs, high and intense fight scenes, and of course Studio Trigger level animation in the finale and movie. It's a great mash up without over using on either Western or Eastern tropes. Also Rise Donatello is best Donatello. I never had or understood the need of a comfort character until Rise Donnie came to be.
I was a fan of 2012 and I agree, Rise probably came out too early. I never watched it because the drastic art shift and more comedic focus was off-putting at the time, but even back then I still respected it for its incredible animation. Now after all these years, I feel like I missed out lol. In some ways it looks better than 2012, so I'm planning to give it a watch someday. Even the art style has grown on me now
Rise truly did get the shaft in so many ways, and I wish it got even half the love that Nick gave the 2012 series. What's even more disappointing is all the love the 80s turtles get lately; they get to be the reps in video games now, when Rise could have used that exposure. Nostalgia is one thing, but let the kids watching this get to see it represented. Glad people can at least sing Rise's praises now rather than it being completely forgotten.
I kind of agree with the choices made for Leo in this iteration of the Turtles, especially after watching all 4 of the cartoons, and all the movies. Leo has always been the turtle with the most spotlight, usually the main one to get his own full fleshed out arc than his brothers, who are mostly relegated to smaller roles in the team (usually Don and Mikey), and throughout all versions of leo up to this point, he always had the same arc. While each interpretation is handled differently, everything about leo's character struggles and development was based off the fact: He's the leader, and the oldest, so he carries a lot more responsibility on his shoulder more than his brothers. And after seeing that so many times, it was refreshing to see this version try something new. He may come off as the most overbearing turtle to some in this iteration, but he doesn't feel like he's the sole character of focus for the writers, where other don't get that same love and passion that Leo usually gets. Here you can see the foundation of him being a leader, but you also get to enjoy a lot more of his character than just his struggles, and it allows you to equally enjoy every other turtle a lot more, especially given that they're all good lovable characters. Which is ka reason that I love the RotTMNT: Movie; leo's coming of age story. It's not only about him taking that mantle of responsibility for his family, like every other Leo, but also to rely on his family a lot more. This Leonardo isn't the Leo who gains the spotlight more than his brothers, and who has to be used to move the plot. But he is the Leo who understands the strength of his family, and knows how to support them and inspire them. He's talented, and can take on that responsibility, but it doesn't get in the way of all the lovable aspects of his character, and him expressing his personality. While I'll admit 2003 Leonardo is my favorite, Rise Leo is really great, and a wonderful take on this character who was always relegated to one main role. Which is what I feel what rise does best, takes these old establish concepts, and refine it for a new and refreshing take, and doing it well. It's one of the most ambitious of the 4 cartoons for the amount of change it has alone, and I can really respect that.
after seeing the movie, i really like how the youtube person said “this leo is a leo unburdanded by leadership. after the kraang thing, you can clearly see Leo be more leader-y. i will admit Leo is not my favorite. (every version of donnie and 2022 Raph take that place) but omg i love this version (he’s literally just Lance from voltron lol) but i love this series is so cool omg. i love 2012 (although i really don’t like donnies crush of april and april’s charcater) but i especially love how in rise they give all the character screen time and arcs and characters. yes the movie does focus much more on Leo and Raph but there was still a lot of moments with Mikey and Donnie. i can go on and on but i really don’t know if people will take me seriously as i’ve only just barely gotten close to finishing 2012 and was first introduced into tmnt with 2018, but i really love this series, i hope people won’t give this series a chance because of how different it is :/
To be honest, I think in every Leo I've seen, they always been that one turtle that was the most passionate about the martial arts and everything, I can't see the other leo's being kind of like Rise leo if they weren't leader not going to lie, but it's still an fun take away from rise leo, since he is the most laxed and care-free of the four at most times. But 2012 Mikey and Donnie, I want to love them soo much, but they never really took advantage of their characters. Like Mikey being the most talented when he focuses, and having the potential to lead the team, or Donnie relying on his body more and not his mind, overcoming his insecurities as a fighter, instead of just keeping him to the dragged out love tri-angle with April and Casey (who both of them I don't really like too much). Which is even odd, cause even 1987, or 2003 Mikey and Donnie were more fun and interesting as characters imo. Glad that Rise gave them both love tho, Donnie more than Mikey, but I still adore Rise Mikey.
I’m speaking for someone who never had a connection to TMNT. This is the series that got me, I was drawn in by the animation and stayed for the characters, they quickly became my new comfort and I will never forgive nick for cutting it short
Donnie is my favorite by far. He holds so much representation for Autism, and has made me cry due to how much i feel represented. And not some fake "I have autism" that most people talk about. The creators came out and said he's suppost to be that neurodivergence representation
As someone who grew up watching the '87 version of the Turtles, I can honestly say I loved Rise. I also loved the 2003 and 2012 versions. I just simply love the Turtles. Raph is also the oldest at 15, Leo and Donnie being twins at 14, and Mikey is the baby of the bunch at 13. All this is probably why Raph declared himself the leader because as the oldest, it's his job to protect his brothers.
I eat found family and bonding combined with humour up, so ROTTMNT was really up my alley. I didn't really have any pre-conceived notions to cloud my judgment since I only watched the 2003 TMNT when I was, like, 9 or 10, maybe even younger. And it wasn't even my favourite cartoon at the time. It actually had the effect, that when I tried to watch 2012 TMNT after ROTTMNT I couldn't get past season 2, because I'd fallen so in love with the characters, writing and family and humour themes of ROTTMNT. I especially love that their team doesn't feel like "follow the leader" type of team, but instead more of a democracy where everyone's ideas are valid. And Mikey was done really dirty in 2k12 and he is my favourite. He is often the heart of the group and even in rise he is often the most in touch with his feelings and helps his brothers express theirs. To have him be constantly belittled and mocked and have him just be the punchline is plain insulting. I did still enjoy the 2003 cartoon when I re-watched it, it has good dialogue and Leo isn't just a piece of white bread like in 2012 and Raph isn't a mean asshole just for the sake of being a mean asshole. I really hope we get a season 3 or even a season 4 at some point. ROTTMNT really deserves it, there's so much potential still left in it. I mean, greater miracles have happened, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed
Addendums And Episode List -I don’t mean to crap on the 80s series, it’s not my childhood and it is dated as heck but it can be genuinely funny -80s gets the credit for creating the core theme, but Rise has my FAVORITE opening theme of every series -If 2012 really did plan for the Krangbots to be Bishop the whole time, I apologize.... but I doubt it -I keep hearing that Rise might be able to come back if it gets enough support, I don't know the likelihood, but by all means add some views to the show and movie on Netflix and Paramont+ if you want to increase those chances -Let me know if you want me to cover TMNT 2012 'Story' Episodes: Origami Tsunami Bug Busters Evil League of Mutants Hot Soup the Game Shadow of Evil Turtledega Nights Insane Mama Train End Game Unhappy Returns Reparin the Baron Hidden City’s Most Wanted Battle Nexus New York Finale 1 Turtle Sunshine Spotless Mind Finale 2 Shreddy or Not Finale 3 Anata wa HiroriJanai Finale 4 Rise Other Favorite Episodes Longest Fight How to Make Enemies Smart Lair Hot Soup the Game Mind Meld Operation Normal Purple Jacket Mystic Library Purple Game Sparring Partner Lair Games Man vs Sewer One Man’s Junk Pizza Puffs Breaking Purple Donnie vs Witch Town The RUclips Mini Episodes
I think that’s the thing with RoTMNT, we needed to move past our love for previous incarnations and let this one stand on it own merits. This incarnation wanted to try something different with the turtles and it shows.
Cassandra would absolutely shine so much more if we get the sweet sweet remaining episodes. I love her character so much. I have always enjoyed the TMNT franchise but Rise threw me into a whole new hyperfocus on it and is making me revisit all the stuff I grew up with. I wish I caught onto it when it originally aired, as I only learned about it when I saw the movie drop this year, but I have been in a turtle spiral since. (Donnie is best boy and I will die on this hill) EDIT: Donnie got jipped in the movie. The leaked storyboard for the kraang fight has me feeling robbed.
I always have to point out whenever I hear it mentioned that in the beginning, Splinter calling the turtles by their color made him look detached, but we find out in "Goyles, Goyles, Goyles" (or maybe not "find out" but it's heavily implied) that he refers to them by color because he named them colors instead of the names we know them as. He meets un-mutated Leo and names him "Green". Then Raph and names him "Green #2" then wonders how he can tell them apart. (Despite them looking nothing like each other). It's doubtful he went from those names to "Leonardo and Raphael", so I can only think the turtles named themselves, or maybe April named them. he's their parent. Parents rarely if ever refer to their children as anything other than the names they gave them, no matter how much the child may prefer a nickname. (Or in this case, an actual name). He's just not very creative with names, which does fit with his characterization here. But again it isn't stated just implied, and probably just my headcanon, so I can't say anyone who thinks otherwise is wrong, but given how big the payoff was for the rest of his actions and personality, I'm willing to give Splints the benefit of the doubt *Edit* now that I'm thinking about it, to add a little more credit to that theory, in "fast and the furriest" (I think) splinter is talking to meatsweats about the turtles and MS says "red, blue, orange, purple" and Splinter says "oh you know their names" we take it as a joke, but maybe he was speaking literally since those are their names 🤔
This version of April really is the best.(yeah I said it) I know some people have been hating on her because of race swapping. Which I do admit has strangely been happening to redheaded characters suddenly becoming black. However this could actually be an homage to Aprils origin. Kevin Eastman, one of the creators of the TMNT comics, originally wanted to make April black. Her name even comes from is then wife. In fact if you look at the early versions of the mirage comics you can’t quite tell if April is white, black,or even mix. His partner, Peter Laird, wanted April to be Asian. Maybe someday the next incarnation of the turtles will have an Asian American version of April.
I used to dislike it but now I can get past it. Her race has nothing to do with the character and as long as it wasn't a decision based on race baiting I can get behing black April. As long as I can still say I like redhead April better😆
@@toyaleejb7714 how about casey becoming a woman in this version and April's ethnicity being swapped.. think it was intending to be under the table woke?? That and Shredder and Splinter and the Tmnt's design and personalities were what got it cancelled.
@@k-dogg9086 Cassandra isn't intended to be a reboot of previous Casey's, she's his mother. We meet the "real"/reboot Casey during the movie when he ends up time traveling due to plot stff (idk if youve seen it so no spoilers lol). She's basically her own character, they just share a name, which is why ROTTMNT Casey is a Jr.
As someone who was a major fan of the 03 series, I actually didn't mind that April was a teenager, in the 2012 version but uh the whole "will they won't they" thing with her and Don...mmm. Yeah. It felt like they were trying to maybe...pander to the April/Don shippers cause of Donnie's relationship with April there. But I think that was people reading too much into it. He cared about her, but I always saw it as more of a big brother lil sister type. He was never going at it with Casey over April like in the 2012 version. I think out of all the iterations, Don is at his best in the 2003 version. He's a jack of all trades character, and it makes him INVALUABLE to the group. Whereas with the 2012 version and Rise, he's mostly just the tech guy, cause even Leo in the 2012 version is able to help Mike when he's injured. But the 03 Don was rather well rounded.
@@TheRibottoStudios oh yeah 03 Don is one of those "fck around find out" types absolutely. I love fics that dive into that side of him. The side that can and will kick your ass lol
as someone who thought (and still thinks) the 2012 series has too many major writing issues to enjoy, i was sooo ready for the reboot and absolutely ecstatic when i realized it was trying something that hadnt been tried for 25 years at that point. and while i think it did come out way too soon after the 2012 series ended, ill always be sad that the 2012 fans hated on it so hard that it got canceled too soon.
@@EstebanW-zu8xb The entire series hyped up Karai being a love interest for Leo. Problem is, due to how mutagen works in that series (you merge DNA with the last creature you touched, and the Turtles merged with Splinter's human DNA), and Karai being Splinter's daughter, that means Leo and Karai are actually blood related.
I had no idea this show existed until the movie was recommended to me on Netflix. I thought it was standalone, so I watched it first. Thank god they made it without spoilers- I instantly fell in love. When the movie was over, I was recommended the series which was ALSO on netflix. I binged the whole thing in a week. Twice. I'm on my third watch now. I can't get enough, I pray they get a third season, this was the best turtles reboot I have ever watched.
24:52 I read a character analysis on tumblr about this. Leo makes jokes when he’s stressed, and in the first half of the movie, he’s constantly goofing around, all of it targeted at Raph. The person thought that Leo was joking to try and get Raph to take the leader role back because he was so stressed. And if Leo’s doing that, of course Raph is going to be pissed as the responsible one. You can see more of their usual dynamic in the last scene where Raph tells Leo he’s proud of him then proceeds to attempt to break his record
I’m so so SO happy that Rise is getting more love! You can just tell how much love was put into this show, from the bombastic action sequences to the character dynamics and the cameos from previous iterations. Personally, it took me a while to get into it, but once I hit Bug Busters, I was sold. It’s all just one big comfort show for me, from the genuine family love to the gorgeous animation, and I’m so grateful for its existence. I REALLY hope it continues, but if not, I think the movie was the perfect finale.
Rise and 2012 Are my favorite turtle interpretations. Not only do I feel like they behave more like teenagers and go on great character developments, they push the action to even greater heights.
As someone who had a serious emotional attachment to 2012, rise was such a breath of fresh air. I remember watching it with my mother, who turned her nose up at it at first, upon seeing splinter. However, by the time we got halfway through season one, her only real complaint was the lack of beepbop and rocksteady which is valid. But her words about Rise will never cease to be true, "The people who hate on Rise but praise the original cartoon forget what made the original so great."
Hand down Rise Donnie is the GOAT and I honestly wish that they carry on with the series. It ended to soon when there is so much more story to be told. These boys deserves more seasons and movie sequels.
Rise made me want to watch the 2012 version and rewatch 2003 and 2007 movie. I was not a fan of the character designs but now I love that you can tell them apart from more than weapons and bandannas. It’s sad we will most likely never see future seasons of this show but I’m still really happy of what we got. Rise easily has the best character development between each other and themselves too
The saddest part about this whole situation is I read somewhere back in comment section a couple years ago that this series originally post to have seven seasons with two lost sisters stories arcs added to it. We miss out seven fricking season guys. We fail this show so badly that it quickly got cancels and shove to back. We should had been supporting it and allowing the chance to shine. Let this be reminder and warning lessons to everyone towards new and returning shows. Don’t judge a book by it covers or else the network would cancel it without hesitation.
One thing about the weapons. The reason donnie doesn't upgrade his staff in the 2012 series is because each weapon in any tmnt series is given to each turtle to balance them out. For example Ralph is very agressive so he was given the sai so he has to be more defenseful and calm and donnie was given a stick to keep him from being dependent on technology.
The amount of references in rise is amazing- a voice line in an episode making a joke about “mutating a rhino and warthog”, which is a reference to beep bop and rocksteady- and gosh I can’t remember any at the moment but I remember sending a bunch of videos to my uninterested friend on all the references
i am one of those people that went into this show with no knowledge of previous iterations of tmnt, and i LOVED it. raph is definitely my favourite character. his eldest sibling syndrome hits hard. he's such a big sweetheart
Now that mitant mayhem is taking off, my past hopes for rise has slowly just turned into me accepting that it has been screwed over and left in ghe dust. This show had massive potential and it breaks my heart that we got so little of it. Im literally going yhrough the stages rn. This show brings me so much joy and I don't want to accept that its over. Man i think i rwally am going through the stages of grief. As always, #saverottmnt❤️💙🧡💜
As an ecology nerd I love the different species aspect of Rise, it’s makes them distinctive and ease to recognize but what I really like is how they utilize them being different species (for the most part) such as all are North American species of turtles. Also most of the time it’s only Mikey who can go into his shell which his species of turtle (the box turtle) can, the rest of the turtles species can’t and in most episodes they obey this rule, except in Lair Games which is witty enough that I can excuse if
I love this show with every fibre of my being, mostly for the reasons you mentioned; Donnie, Donnie, Donnie, Donnie, Donnie, Donnie, Leo, Raph, Mikey, Donnie, Donnie, the animation, the story, the new characters, Donnie, Donnie, and Donnie.
Yes at first I was hesitant on the change but when I actually started fully watch the show it felt so refreshing then the previous iterations. The animation is breathtaking and they feel like a found family in a way.
10:35 I liked that he uses a wooden one, a fan had a theory that I really liked that master splinter gave them conflicting weapons on purpose, Donnie a simple staff to further his creativity soncee he often realizes on tech, Mikey nunchucks since he's absent minded he gave him a very technical weapon that could hit him if he's not paying attention, Ralph the most aggro gets a weapon that was design more for defensive blocks and fighting, and Leo being the leader has the burden of making the hard choices has the only lethal weapons.
I feel like there would have been more Mikey development if the season hadn’t been cut. I know that there were supposed to be more episodes with him, esp his dynamic with Raph. Outside him and Raph breaking into Ghostbears wedding to steal back a black hole toaster, there was also supposed to be an episode that explores Mikey’s desire to be taken seriously and even one where his brothers are turned into tots and he has to be the eldest for the episode.
Lead Kraang was *INCREDIBLE* geez his suit was so good, that scorpion type tail was so good, and that sort of head with the glowing red eye Donnie is so good in this movie as well
I wish the suit wasn't so humanoid tho, it was so cool seeing him decimate the turtles without his suit at the start of the film. It was a waste not to take complete advantage of his unique biology
You are the first person I’ve seen actually talk about not wanting to move onto the new MM and it makes me happy. I love to know other people also don’t want to move onto this other show and are upset we didn’t get anymore then we did.
Shame that Rise didn't get renewed but with Covid it was going to be very tough. Also having ended early meant there was no desire to continue the series after it reached its natural end like: 80s show, trilogy movies, 03-Back to the Sewers, & 2012. It was also nice to have a more comedic TV version of the Turtles as 03-07 and Nickelodeon were more serious in nature plus those 2 versions together lasted 12 seasons which could be a bit much for fans over a 15 year period
As someone who watched 2012 Ninja Turtles as a little kid but was never a fanatic about it, I honestly love the Rise of TMNT series. I love how in this version how they put emphasis on the Turtles' personalities and not just their roles, the fact that they even show affection and say "I love you" makes them more relatable, and the animation is so fun to watch. I loved the movie and I also like how they didn't say the cliché lines "I know you're still in there" or "fight it" because those annoy me sometimes. I just wish in the movie that they played the full theme song maybe at the end credits because it's too catchy but it was probably cut for time, and Mikey should've gotten more character development within the series. I don't feel like the TMNT franchise should do that reboot Mutant Mayhem so quickly because I feel like there's still a lot to unpack about Rise, like Casey's arc since that guy still kind of sees the Turtles as some ideal heroic beings. Also, the reason why Donnie has trouble expressing how he feels is because he's canonically autistic.
The reason Leo and Donnie are referred to as the disaster twins is because they are twins. In rottmnt the brothers have confirmed ages: Raph: 15 Leo: 14 Donnie: 14 Mikey: 13
Yes, I loved the remake when it came out, and the hate made no sense to me. I remember when the original 80s show came out and I criticized it for how much it changed from the original comics. I have no patience for for people complaining about canon between shows when they are all SO SO different from the source. But now I love each turtles adaptation, precisely because they are all so unique from each other. It’s like Scooby Doo, it’s fun to see the many many different ways people can reimagine these characters. And yes, Donnie in this show is freaking awesome.
Actually there’s this deleted scene that was supposed The end of the movie- which would work to close the franchise and be closer ( and in that scene I’m pretty sure they addressed something about Leo being leader and feeling kind of hesitant to go on, but is then encouraged by Raph) and you see, they took out this scene because there might be a potential season three or at least more from the series- so they made the decision to not at the scene that would give closer. That means they themselves knew or at least have hope that the series might go on.
I love Donnie sm, I especially relate to him a lot as I'm also on the autism spectrum! I love to see more accurate representation in media! And the way they wrote his low empathy didn't write him as a heartless being like it tends to happen. Overall I love the writing for this show!
I like the point about Leo working his way up to be ready for leader. It makes sense that Raph would be leader for a while since he's the oldest and the biggest. This leaves room for character development for Leo. He matures throughout the series until Splinter sees him as ready to be leader, which happens at the end of the finale of s2.
I do want to add that, even as a person with only one sibling, splinter calling the turtles by their colours rather than names is relatable because my mom is super forgettful, and when I was younger I had paler hair she sometimes called me blondie, but whenever I mention "my mom forgets my name sometimes, haha" people seem to think its like, tragic? Like, dude, shes multilingual with memory issues, it's more of a quirk that is also a bit of a family joke. So I honestly think that the name thing at least is just normal.
I'm at work rn so I'm gonna come back and gush properly about how much I love this show when I'm done with my shift, but just know until then that this show is so overhated it's infuriating and easily my favorite version of TMNT (especially as a black TMNT fan). Ok I'm back, and I'm so happy it was included how silly the 80s series was and how 2012 was also hated a lot when it first aired and while great, definitely isn't perfect. "Cowaboomers" seem to always forget those little details when bashing Rise's existence every other week. It's so funny yet sad how incapable older TMNT fans are of anything remotely new or lighthearted showing up in a franchise literally called "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", but after seeing the hate Rise got/still gets literally any time it's mentioned I'm not as surprised anymore. I'll try to keep this as brief as possible but as someone who was exposed to TMNT through the 2012 as a kid and became a huge fan of the franchise as a whole, from day 1 Rise has just been such a breath of fresh air in a 35+ year old franchise that's been imo more or less the same. Every new change Rise decided to make just made me love the show even more, to the point where it's honestly jarring seeing older versions again cause of how much I love this one. I love how beautiful this show is, I love seeing the turtles as different species, I love getting to see the turtles have fun and act like children for once like the teenagers they've supposedly always been without being traumatized every five seconds, I could keep going. Cassandra so badly deserved to get her proper arc and become besties with April and Sunita, god we were so robbed. Also as a black female TMNT fan, Rise April existing make me so so happy and is the first time I've ever felt represented in this franchise (currently thinking of being her for Halloween this year and it's gonna be so cool getting to be a character who looks like me from one of my favorite shows). The turtles as well having 2/4 be played by black VAs was also really cool to see, and like 98% of fandom just agreeing without having to say anything that any human versions of the turtles are black or blasian was something I didn't know I needed so badly after growing up and seeing them always portrayed as white guys. I just... love Rise so much it hurts man. I'll never forgive Nick for not even giving such a lightning in a bottle show a better chance and not immediately treating it like garbage (we were supposed to get a Turtles Tots episode with Mikey having to take care of his now younger brothers for christs sake, I hate it here). Regardless, even though it took 4 years, I'm glad this lovely iteration is finally starting to get the recognition it deserves on a wider scale and people are starting to come around to it.
I'm usually a hardcore Leo fan, at first just because he had the blue bandanna and swords, which a kid who loved swords and the color blue this was extremely appealing to me. But over time as I delved more and more into the series, checking out every incarnation, I started to realize that it really wasn't just the blue or swords that I loved about him, but how he was the one who always had to overcome the most challenges for his brothers all the while still having the be the most calm and rational one. Him overcoming these struggles have always been the highlights of the series for me, and has been a hero I look up to the most since childhood... AND THEN RISE DONNIE JUST HAS TO COME ALONG AND BE THE GREATEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD!
Oh my gosh I didn't even think about that with Raph and Donnie being with Mikey while opening the portal as apposed to when they were not at the beginning of the movie!! That is such a good parallel!! They shared the pain and power of opening it making it open faster and for Mikey to survive!! Plus it really hits you in the heart, so good! Also, I kinda wish we had gotten at least a hint at how Donnie and Raph died in the bad future. Seeing their bandanas wrapped around Leo's sword really hit hard. I'm so curious!! Loved the movie and show, Donnie is easily my favorite, hope this show comes back. #saverottmnt
Rottmnt is 100% definitely my favorite show. Not bc of just the animation alone (CUZ MY GOSH ITS CLEAN), but also the characters. My fav has gotta be Donnie (bootyyyshaker9000). He’s just the relatable yet unpredictable character who ACTUALLY shows what low-empathy is like in a person. He rlly caught my eye when I first saw his new look and I instantly loved him 💜 (and his dance moves I must say)
I will never forgive the cartoon community for overlooking this awesome show. We should have learned by now different isn't always bad after Tranformers animated.
This series was INCREDIBLE! Completely underrated! DIVERSITY. GOOD COMPETENT FEMALE CHARACTERS. HEALTHY FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS! REALISTIC PERSONALITIES! NO TOXIC MASCULINITY! Like WHY WASNT THIS MORE POPULAR???
no way people actually compare it to teen titans go!?!?!?!? BRUHHHHH if I ever hear someone say that I will obliterate them. rise is one of the best things to ever happen
no literally!!! as someone who barely remembers the og teen titans/ninja turtles series but watched both teen titans go and rise i can safely say THEYRE SO DIFFERENT. like the only things they have in common are that they are 2D animated reboots that are funny
I just wanted to comment that when you showed that screenshot of the live action TMNT it was like a jumpscare for me! Holy Shit! My brain just completely forgot that was a thing that happened!
Actually in reference to the movie in them never actually saying leo is the leader: a storyboard artist posted a scene on twitter that was supposed to be part of the ending of the movie. And in the scene raph tells leo that he never wanted to be leader ( implying that he took the role because he felt it was his responsibility due to him being the oldest/biggest) and so was glad and probably thankful that leo took over
Also I ADORE how this show portrayed all the characters. i LOVE ALL OF THEM this series. Like-..SO MUCH. Although Donnie is my favorite, I find Leo SO SO FUN too. And Raph is such a sweet big brother. And Mickey is VERY entertaining to me in this versions, where normally Im just..not into him. And I was never that into Leo, as well Donnie's chaos is THE. BEST.
IT'S ON HIATUS NOT CANCELLED!! A Q&A with Ron Corcillo revealed that it is definitely not cancelled and that it could be brought back, though it's not likely it will be right now due to Mutant Mayhem and Tales of the TMNT.
@@agustinberto6138 Yeah I feel like if Nickelodeon wasn't so terrible and didn't cut most of season 2 we could've had a more fleshed out story.

They are always on board in including her in their plans and she has a lot more personality.
i really love Rise April she's Awesome

Yeah, As much as I loved the 2012 show, I was never a fan of how Mikey was treated like a doormat for the other Turtles.
@MelonTartVA 99. ,the garden
I feel like it would be too quick to turn back to the originals because it feels like there should be more to the story.
why not?? the old shows did some things better lol
@@salmascreativitypen4489 eeh
@@tobsonasanya4765 For sure, each show had it's strengths! But that's the thing, it's been done before already. Personally I don't want to see the same thing again with just a different paint job. I want them to keep pushing into new territory and I simply worry that when the new one comes out, it will be less about finding new and interesting ways of telling these stories and more about helping the investors feel safe by doing what's already been done. Just the same old thing for the new generation. I'm not saying that's necessarily what is happening, but it is a fear of mine that comes with any retelling of a beloved franchise.
@@angelwingkat I didn’t watch every show but I know they were probably all impressive in their own way.
Someone did an essay about it on RUclips too
Real talk, this show/film actually helped me to understand myself a bit better.
@@SpicyT257 this comment makes me see myself in a whole new appearance and I'm glad to find out more.
I think the biggest problem was the time between 2012 ending and rise starting. We would normally have like 2-3 years between incarnations and so when I first saw rise I saw it as to different. But now I’ve watched it I love it and want more.
RIGHT?!
Nick is too blame. Nick is always to blame. I watched an hour long video from Just Stop to know.
Yea that was a big problem with it, 2012 was so good, and they could have done more with it, but then going to a drastic change like that was a bit of a mistake.
@@CellSpex That's true, but given how radically different this show was, I still think it would've been not well recieved. I mean, that's the fandom for you.

@@prim9431 As an older teen, I can say with absolute confidence that me and my peers are barely any more mature than the Rise turtles.
Are you sure about this information? At what I know is that Raph is 17, Leo and Donnie are 16, Miguel is 15
@@redron2350that’s in the rise tmnt movie
They are ninjas first, team second, and brothers last 😮💨😮💨😮💨
@@ShipperTrash 2012 still acted like brothers though
@@ShipperTrash i guess so then again not everything will be realistic lol
Donnie is definitely my favorite part of this show. It’s so nice to see a character on screen that acts like me and doesn’t get put down or mocked for it. His family doesn’t treat him any differently while still accommodating his needs, (shown especially in the movie when each brother gets their own individual scene of them making an effort to understand and help him), and it’s very uplifting to see a character celebrated for while not being reduced to just their autistic traits :)
he's the reason im watching haha
Donnie's my favorite Character in this Version
But he's far from overpowered otherwise his brothers would let him do all the work
@@dewolf123 Yeah, because his brothers literally have mystical abilities, so they need to make Donnie tech skills over the top in order to be on par with the other Turtles.
one thing I also love about Rottmnt Donnie is that, I myself am autistic and thereby disabled-
He is a softshell, and he built his own disability aid to help with living with this shell. And they made this disability aid badass!! I love this version of him so much-
I think it’s canon that Donnie is also autistic and shows these traits in a healthy way and he’s also supported by his brothers in a good way
HONESTLY!! I LOVE DONNIE SM
The best Donnie Version
Me and my brother started watching this together and maaaan it was so weird seeing brothers just be so good to each other more then fight in a show after being so used to bickering or bullying as the entire dynamic in so many shows. We pointed out how many of their interactions reminded us of our relationship and childhood and it made alot of the dialog/jokes so much funnier. Especially as an older brother I'm happy seeing shows where the older sibling or siblings aren't just some absolute monster to the younger ones or even act as an antagonist. It's just old as hell to me so I eat up more relatable brother dynamics which this show nails.
I'm so happy to hear that!
Yeah rise fixes a problem I have with a lot of shows, which is how the characters are always arguing. It gets annoying really quickly. Rottmnt on the other hand, reminds me of how I actually interact with my own siblings. We love each other and get along, but we also tease each other. It was really refreshing to see that
Yeah Rise did the Brothers Dynamic Wholesome and well
Yeah, I never really had a problem with Cassandra, especially when the movie came out and revealed that the Casey we know from other renditions isn’t her in this version, but rather her son, and I like that decision since in the 2012 version, I always saw Casey as the weakest fighter (still capable, just not as strong as the others) and Rise virtually built up on that by making Casey younger than all of them.
april doesnt have to put the turtles down to prop herself
popular does not mean they are loved
The 2012 did actually have a few episodes changing up turtle dynamics.

The character designs were so good, the animation was sooo good.

(Both from his lineage and from working in film)
His callousness is balanced out by his hands off approach and general support of the boys.
Those are all excellent points, thanks!
This can also be why it can hit you so hard when Splinter calls one of the turtles by their real name. You know it’s getting serious.
you should say martial arts training on the body, mind, and spirit because soul and spirit are not totally the same thing Because there is a difference that difference is that our soul is our thought not ourselves but our spirit is ourselves and our conscience is our senses not ourselves
The name thing also ties back into Turtle-dega Nights, how Mikey was shocked when Splinter used Donnie's real name instead of just calling him Purple.
And the female characters arent reduced to crushes/love interests!!! it's SO refreshing to see a show where boys and girls can just be FRIENDS without the writers forcing an awkward relationship arc on every. single. girl.
it's also nice to see Mikey treated nicely for once, and Raph's anger issues arent glorified.
Same, I love the platonic and family relationships in this series and there’s no weird love triangles going on.
THIS IS SO TRUE OHMIGOSH
Originally, April wasn't a love interest, she was a mature woman, who was kind of the turtles big sister (original Mirage comics, 2003 TMNT series). :)

@Lee Brown Animation is great Artstlye was different
I just respect that a lot and love how satisfying it is to connect the dots!

the vanilla ice dance in time square had me hollering, great callback.
and the lord dregg honey jar! and ofc the amazing cork board donnie made in the pizza pit episode which showed various references to past series
It was a hiatus at first, but 6 weeks before the finale was released, they were told that oh by the way you’re cancelled-
There’s so many storyboards with voice acting! They had plans! And they had to scrap it and work hard for those 6 weeks! The scriptwriter wrote the script overnight! And they usually spend like a month on animating one episode like the finales!

in the movie theyre all 2 years older :D
this is why raph takes the leader responsibility because hes the oldest and feels obliged to take care of his brothers :"D
(I don't have the deleted scene on hand as it was posted on Twitter some time ago, but it might have been uploaded here on YT by someone already)
Anyway, there's still a chance for the series to come back!
It was hard not to look at this iteration, and go "wait what?"
BUT after giving it a chance I realized this is actually the second best iteration after the 2003 version.
@@The.Viewer I love it it's so funny. I think 03 Don would be SO shook at how SASSY this Donnie is cause. Bro doesn't hold BACK 😆

I refuse to believe this is the end for rise, it deserves so much more
I love how ROTTMNT changed so many things yet kept the core of what made the characters lovable in the first place.
Rise of the TMNT is a great series. It’s animation is fantastic, it’s story is deep and the characters are fun. People are just mean.
This is why i never trust the critics! They ruin everything good about almost perfect show.
@@joyc.e.7511 Same.
Yay more Rise love. I binged it and I did not get the hate for it it was fun and very dynamic in the animation
Thank you so much for the info!

it's one of the best shows I've ever had the pleasure of watching, and I hope it's brought back someday.
If Michael Bay’s movies could exist without cancelling the 2012 Turtles, I think Seth Rogan’s movie can exist without fully killing Rise.
The 2012 series even had a reference to the movies. There’s an episode where the turtles and April are in an elevator and like on the film Mickey is trying to tap his nunchucks to the rythem of the elevator but in here Ralph punches him out of annoyance

2003 is the best Leo.
Oh don’t worry, I don’t hate it 😅 I was just put off by Splinter’s look😂 the art style is cool 😊
Nick made this movie as a realization of their mistakes. They knew the creators would take anything they get to still make a show worth watching.
Having only just started binging the show, I concur.
If I could marry a comment, it would be yours.
@@hanakosan4404 You love to see it. Thank you!
after seeing the movie, i really like how the youtube person said “this leo is a leo unburdanded by leadership. after the kraang thing, you can clearly see Leo be more leader-y. i will admit Leo is not my favorite.
Feels like a bit of an oversimplification of his character Geocoolio.
Wait? You think 2012 Leo, who pretty much has all of his 03 traits and few of his own, is bland, but you don't think that of 03 leo?

I think that’s the thing with RoTMNT, we needed to move past our love for previous incarnations and let this one stand on it own merits. This incarnation wanted to try something different with the turtles and it shows.
@Tin Watchman exactly
(Donnie is best boy and I will die on this hill)
EDIT: Donnie got jipped in the movie.
But again it isn't stated just implied, and probably just my headcanon, so I can't say anyone who thinks otherwise is wrong, but given how big the payoff was for the rest of his actions and personality, I'm willing to give Splints the benefit of the doubt
*Edit* now that I'm thinking about it, to add a little more credit to that theory, in "fast and the furriest" (I think) splinter is talking to meatsweats about the turtles and MS says "red, blue, orange, purple" and Splinter says "oh you know their names" we take it as a joke, but maybe he was speaking literally since those are their names 🤔

The entire series hyped up Karai being a love interest for Leo.
That's interesting and it makes sense
I’m so so SO happy that Rise is getting more love! You can just tell how much love was put into this show, from the bombastic action sequences to the character dynamics and the cameos from previous iterations. Personally, it took me a while to get into it, but once I hit Bug Busters, I was sold. It’s all just one big comfort show for me, from the genuine family love to the gorgeous animation, and I’m so grateful for its existence. I REALLY hope it continues, but if not, I think the movie was the perfect finale.
RISE is underrated and it deserves a lot of love because a lot of heart of put into it.
Rise and 2012 Are my favorite turtle interpretations. Not only do I feel like they behave more like teenagers and go on great character developments, they push the action to even greater heights.
Agreed
The Netflix movie that came out has to be one of my favorites of all time as an animated TMNT movie
Yeah the episode about him making a turtle robot solidified it
The amount of references in rise is amazing- a voice line in an episode making a joke about “mutating a rhino and warthog”, which is a reference to beep bop and rocksteady- and gosh I can’t remember any at the moment but I remember sending a bunch of videos to my uninterested friend on all the references
i am one of those people that went into this show with no knowledge of previous iterations of tmnt, and i LOVED it. raph is definitely my favourite character. his eldest sibling syndrome hits hard. he's such a big sweetheart
Also most of the time it’s only Mikey who can go into his shell which his species of turtle (the box turtle) can, the rest of the turtles species can’t and in most episodes they obey this rule, except in Lair Games which is witty enough that I can excuse if
Splinter is such a well made character in this version.
I love him sooo much.
Lead Kraang was *INCREDIBLE*
geez his suit was so good, that scorpion type tail was so good, and that sort of head with the glowing red eye
Donnie is so good in this movie as well
I don’t know who’s scarier. Him or 2003 Shredder.
@@justice8718 2003 Shredded Cheese is cool, but geez am I a sucker for menacing demon armor with one glowing red eye anime designs
I wish the suit wasn't so humanoid tho, it was so cool seeing him decimate the turtles without his suit at the start of the film. It was a waste not to take complete advantage of his unique biology
Leo’s personality change in this series feels like such a whiplash but honestly I’m here for it. It’s so amusing to me
I’m so happy people are starting to notice this show!
Wait but in the movie, didn't leo say "I know you're still in there" or something similar to that to Raph when he was taken over by the Kraang?
@@oliverzwatermelongum No I think he said “Come back to me buddy, come on.”
The reason Leo and Donnie are referred to as the disaster twins is because they are twins. In rottmnt the brothers have confirmed ages:
Raph: 15
Leo: 14
Donnie: 14
Mikey: 13
Thanks for letting me know!
Wait _W H A T ? !_
I’ve been on the Rise train since day one. I’m so happy to see so many finally giving this show the respect it deserved. It’s such a fun show.
Exactly
The series where I totally sided woth Megatron because he's the only one with a brain cell
September 2023, we are all still waiting for rise season 3, come on Nickelodeon, you gave us two tmnt movies and we still need Rise Season 3 😭
This series was INCREDIBLE! Completely underrated!
DIVERSITY. GOOD COMPETENT FEMALE CHARACTERS. HEALTHY FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS! REALISTIC PERSONALITIES! NO TOXIC MASCULINITY!
Like WHY WASNT THIS MORE POPULAR???
hopefully this gets a season 3 though, the fandom had it trending on twitter for a full month or two lmao, they're very dedicated :D
no way people actually compare it to teen titans go!?!?!?!? BRUHHHHH if I ever hear someone say that I will obliterate them. rise is one of the best things to ever happen
no literally!!! as someone who barely remembers the og teen titans/ninja turtles series but watched both teen titans go and rise i can safely say THEYRE SO DIFFERENT. like the only things they have in common are that they are 2D animated reboots that are funny
@@taco_boi1167 AND TEEN TITANS ISNT EVEN FUNNY TO ME I HATE IT 😭
I just wanted to comment that when you showed that screenshot of the live action TMNT it was like a jumpscare for me! Holy Shit! My brain just completely forgot that was a thing that happened!
Honestly I probably shouldnt have just so people continue to forget they exist...
Actually in reference to the movie in them never actually saying leo is the leader: a storyboard artist posted a scene on twitter that was supposed to be part of the ending of the movie. And in the scene raph tells leo that he never wanted to be leader ( implying that he took the role because he felt it was his responsibility due to him being the oldest/biggest) and so was glad and probably thankful that leo took over
Thanks for letting me know, and send me that link if you can:)
When one of your favorite shows gets called great by one of your favorite reviewers: 😍
1:50 “When shredder was revealed to be a Kraang”
"Raph is-..the LEADER? Leo is-..the FUNNY one? Donnie is- AMAZING?!"
Me, at the last bit: *cackling and hitting my fist against the desk* YUP
Also I ADORE how this show portrayed all the characters. i LOVE ALL OF THEM this series. Like-..SO MUCH. Although Donnie is my favorite, I find Leo SO SO FUN too. And Raph is such a sweet big brother. And Mickey is VERY entertaining to me in this versions, where normally Im just..not into him. And I was never that into Leo, as well Donnie's chaos is THE. BEST.
ALSO YEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS to everything you say about Donnie.
IT'S ON HIATUS NOT CANCELLED!! A Q&A with Ron Corcillo revealed that it is definitely not cancelled and that it could be brought back, though it's not likely it will be right now due to Mutant Mayhem and Tales of the TMNT.
