BATMAN & ROBIN (1997) Revisited: DC Movie Review

- Matt Reeves’ The Batman has successfully rebooted the franchise again, with Robert Pattinson’s take on the Caped Crusader a hit with audiences and critics. It’s incredible how far the series has come and how versatile it’s been, but let’s take a step back to a time that was less kind to the Batman saga. In 1997, Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin came close to cratering the series, earning terrible reviews and underwhelming box office. So what happened?
In this episode of DC Revisited, we examine how Batman & Robin initially seemed like a sure-fire smash. 1995’s Batman Forever was a huge hit, and a follow-up was quickly put into production. However, the cracks started to show right away, with star Val Kilmer opting out of a follow-up due to poor relations with Schumacher and his wish to focus on his passion project, The Saint. George Clooney was signed as a replacement, while Chris O’Donnell returned as Robin. To play Mr. Freeze, they chose the great Arnold Schwarzenegger, while Uma Thurman would play the movie’s other big bad, Poison Ivy. Alicia Silverstone, then red-hot after starring in Clueless, was signed on to play Batgirl.
Initially, things seemed to be going well, so much so that for a while, it looked like Schumacher and company would jump right into another sequel, Batman Triumphant. But then came the test screenings and early reviews, all of which were toxic. There’s a lot to unpack in this episode of DC Revisited, so strap yourselves in for a deep dive into perhaps the most widely reviled superhero movie ever.

They just didnt understand something can appeal to children without being "childish". The success of Batman the Animated Series demonstrates how to take a property to all ages, for the ages!
Hell, "The Lego Batman Movie" handled this spades better than this film. Amazing how the film literally based on a toy set was less of a toy commercial than the "Live-Action" approach. I don't think it's at all wrong to enjoy this film, but not to pretend that it is some misunderstood masterpiece or underrated gem or something. It's a toy commercial, plain and simple.
The problem is, I think, how ppl crucify Joel for the movie. We're decades away from it, but WB did the SAME mistakes with the DCEU movies.
WB don't understand that, if people say they didn't enjoy movie cause it's too dark (that movie being Bvs or Returns) they won't fix it by adding silly jokes on post (JL or Forever) and drastically changing the course of the movies with artists being choked by stupid rules. Also, people usually use "it's too dark" or "it's to silly" to point narrative inconsistencies inside the movie. Returns was mostly planned around cool looks with production being messed by a strike and BvS had too many cooks in a kitchen run by Snyder.
AND B&R is a unexpected turn, but it isn't bad.
For the record, Val Kilmer made the right call, because The Saint (1997) is an underrated gem
I saw The Saint in the theatre but not B&R. I still remember The Saint, even though I only watched it once.
I thought his German accent was a riot.
I only saw it in the theater but I remember really liking it.
The irony of Joel Schumacher is that he had the ability to direct a great Batman film, having perfected the gothic comic book movie with _The Lost Boys._ Unfortunately, WB hired him to make McDonald's commercials.
Falling down also captures alot of the Frank Miller social commentary
Joel was super versatile he could direct anything
This is exactly it. So many Batman fans blame Joel, like "Oh look they hired him and look what happened" when really, WB made the mandates, and Joel was always very gracious about it. I still wonder what his darker Batman Triumphant would have been.
@@ryanlemay6296 His and Akiva’s pitch sounds interesting, I’d like to see it as a comic book continuation or animated movie
@@ryanlemay6296 You're not the only one; the interesting premise of "Batman Triumphant" has had my attention for the longest time now. Part of me wishes the script will somehow find its way online someday.
Kevin Feige said in an interview how he felt Batman And Robin was the 1 of most important superhero movies ever made, due to it showing there had to be a new approach to the genre
And?!
@@Axolotl_Mischief Unless that was his point.. not that it was new, but that Batman & Robin showed how stale it’d gotten.
@@willrunriot Yeah, a lot of ignorant people say "Batman & Robin KILLED the superhero genre!!" when if you actually look at the '90s, you got at best stuff like The Crow or Blade as solid comic book films, but everything else superhero related was underwhelming or trashy.
X-Men 1 and Spider-Man in the early 2000s is what really started the rise of the superhero genre.
😆
@@DeepEye1994 It and Superman 4 put a dent in it. And Blad (I know it's a comic book movie) But most audences didn't know that. Unlike Batman or Superman. It was more damaging to the Batman movie franchise. Which even after 8 years, and people not knowing it was a reboot, Batman begins did okay at first, but nothing like the previous films. Word of mouth and dvd sales/rentals are what made that film explode
I was 20 when this came out, me and about 10 of my coworkers went to see it in the theater and we had a blast. I like goofy, over the top movies like this. The movie reminded me of the Adam West tv show from the 1960's.
About same age as you, I was 19. But I didn't care for it, though I really liked Batman Forever, even if it was lighthearted and more campy then the Burton movies. I remember seeing A LOT of people walk out of the theater for this movie back in 1997. I think seeing any movie with a group of people can make it more fun, compared to just either by yourself or with one or two other people. I went with my buddy, we hated. But I've gone to see terrible movies more recently with groups of coworkers, and we have fun even if the flick is shitty.
I was 9. It was fun. But by the time I was 10 I was already tired of it.
Wow I never thought of it that way; Over the top / Adam West wholesome Aesthetic, I mean this movie is lighthearted and fun, never felt cringey.
I remember the DVD commentary for the movie was basically just 90 minutes of Schumacher apologizing. It really is unfair that so much of the hate towards this movie got directed at him when he was only really doing what the studio machine was telling him to do.
@albert fish ...and that Danny twerp... oh, and his Karen mother.
He chose to do it though, so he is as to blame as the studio. He could have walked from the project if he disagreed with it.
@@SumDumGyhat’s why he never did a third one. The studio did want him to. Plus I really did think Joel thought families were like it, so I would have also completed Batman & Robin if I was him.
@thischannelisdeleted yeah but he could of just made it like Batman Forever then he would of been fine
@@ChemicalCorpse91 He *did* make it just like Batman Forever.
Poison Ivy's backstory was cool and Schwarzenegger was obviously having such a good time he was a joy to watch.
This movie is a throwback to the Adam West era, and at that, it's an absolute success.
The Adam West era was campy that believed it was serious, this trash was an insult.
Good call having Poison Ivy and Mr Freeze as the two villains. Nothing quite like a duo whose goals are diametrically opposed.
I mean that was acrually included in the story with a double cross. It could have been great and who am I kidding it is great and a guilty pleasure of mine
Plus Poison Ivy offers to let Freeze freeze the world in order to kill off all the people so she can repopulate it with her mutant plants.
I have actually gotten softer on my view of Batman and Robin these days. It still makes me smile whenever I watch it, and that is something that I can appreciate.
I don't care what anyone says or thinks about Batman & Robin, I got a lot of love for it!
Personally, I’m thankful we never had to see Nick Cage as Superman.
I loved this movie as a kid. I still have fun watching it so many years later, regardless of everybody hating on it.
I don't like to call this movie "bad" I just say it's the weakest of the series. I still enjoy myself when I watch it, and isnt that ultimately the point? I also think the Bruce/Alfred scenes in this movie are some of THE BEST in any movie. I wish that had been more of the focus of this movie than spectacle.
This was the first Batman movie I saw and being like 5 years old I loved it I had to have all the toys lol. Looking back it’s a horrible movie but it will always be nostalgic to me
That’s how I felt with Batman Forever and that’s why it’s a huge guilty pleasure for me
Love them both. Not bad. Very campy and misguided. But still too fun not to watch
You can like a horrible movie.
I was 20 when this movie came out and had seen all three of the previous Batman movies in theaters. Didn't end up seeing this one until the mid-2000s right around Batman Begins. The release of a "good" Batman movie somehow made it okay to finally watch this.
Exactly. Not me, for this film, but many john waters and kevin Smith films of the 90s.
Batman Beyond would be an amazing live action movie.
It's been in development for years. The studio was seriously considering it,but Christoper Nolan came in and wanted to do an origin story and do sequels.
I was working for Ringling Bros Circus when this movie came out. I bought the soundtrack a few weeks before the movie came out while in Lexington, KY. I LOVED the soundtrack! To this day listening to the soundtrack takes me back to that time in my life and all the happy memories I had working for The Greatest Show on Earth. The movie itself on the other hand…
Soundtrack for "batman forever" and this one were 🔥
@@elreyyakko no doubt. Say what you will about the movies but the soundtracks were fantastic!
I'm surprised you didn't mention that John Glover's character actually was an established character from the comics, the supervillian The Floranic Man.
I love all four of the 80s/90s Batman movies. Batman and Robin is my favorite guilty pleasure film. I's so bad, but at the same time, it keeps me entertained and laughing. I think Poiison Ivy is the best thing about this film. Well, that and Mr. Freeze. However, I really, really hate it when people lump Batman Forever with this one. I feel that Batman Forever, was until The Dark Knight Trilogu and several of the animated films, the only movie to really focus on Batman as a character. Say what you will, bit to me, Batman Forever is a treat each time I watch it. So bright and cheery. And we could use more that these days, what with how dark our world is becoming.
This a fast becoming my favourite series on RUclips dudes you are smashing these videos, excellent work!
I like the fan theory that suggests that the reason for the over the top camp and bright colours that just didn't match the Gotham we'd seen before is that the Batman and Robin movie was actually a Stage Play. It would explain some of the absurdities, like the 'Batman on Ice' bit (he just happened to have ice-skates built in? Really?). It would also explain the colourful Gotham. Maybe it was a PR thing, or perhaps the stage play really was (mostly) aimed at kids.
I remember renting this from my favourite video store. As a theft deterrent, they listed the replacement cost of tapes on the clamshell box, and an employee explained to me that the retail cost and the rental licensing costs were wildly different. I always thought it was weird seeing each tape say something like it costing hundreds of dollars to replace them, only to then see Batman and Robin's price being closer to $30. That was really the first warning sign for me.
I never subscribed to the notion that Chris O’Donnell‘s Robin was supposed to be a teenager, but rather in his early 20’s
Arnold's "goons" weren't watching Jack Frost. They were watching Snow Miser from "The Year Without A Santa Claus".
Either way, "Batman & Robin" still "sucked"!
It’s actually not Jack Frost that Freeze forces his goons to sing along to, it’s The Year Without a Santa Claus, and that’s the Snow Miser
As an 80s kid who grew up watching everything Arnold, I had a blast watching this. It's hilarious. "Yuh nut sending me to da cooluh!"
Just noticed the random Taco Bell in the background at 9:22. Why would there be a random Taco Bell in downtown Gotham of all places? Guess they had to get that product placement in where they could.
It's of my Favorite Movies. It's like a Big Budget version of "Adam West" Batman TV Show. If you don't take it so Serious, it's a Super Fun ... Movie.
One of my Favs
Arnold Schwarzenegger would have been a badass bane
Have 3 lines of dialogue ever killed the hope and excitement for a movie as quickly and thoroughly as the opening lines of Batman & Robin?
Jon Glover also showed up in Shazam! As Zivana’s father
I remember the Patrick Stewart rumors from before this movie came out
Kudos to this video (and channel) for crucially pointing out the departure of Tim Burton - and its creative effect on this entry (too many media outlets have neglected to mention that Burton had been part of _three_ Batman films during late 1980s and 1990s).
JASON Woodrue, not John. In the comics, he's another plant-themed super villain called the Floronic Man
Jeep Swenson at least looked the part of a genetic freak. This version of Bane has more in common with a character from the 80s named Ivor, a plant-human hybrid created by Poison Ivy who was slavishly devoted to her
The silver suits at the climax were meant to be able to deflect beams from the freeze gun, which is why Mr. Freeze never used it in the fight. The part explaining this was cut
08:20 Yeah, he's 6'3" and huge and if he were playing the henchman of an average sized actress he'd look massive. Uma Thurman however is 5'11" and wearing heels so he looks short lol
RIP Joel Schumacher
All the stories of Clooney saying will refund you the admission to Batman and Robin on the spot if you show him your ticket stub. He has said the film helped him by proving he could make a capable leading man, though he has sworn he will never reprise the role.
Best Batman toy commercial ever!
It’s not Jack Frost on Mr Freeze’s scene it’s The Year Without Santa Claus.
John Glover has done way more work for WB/DC than you mentioned, he is also the voice of tons of characters in their animated works. Most notably he voiced The Riddler in Batman TAS and Superman TAS.
Savanna's dad in Shazam...
From the moment I first watched it, I thought Clooney was the wrong choice to portray Batman.
4:15 A BAT CREDIT CARD!!!!
I can't lie, I seen this on opening day and felt ashamed when I left the theater. My "son" at the the time enjoyed it
Is he no longer your son?
@@georgiilkov9915 he was my "step son" at the time and I didn't wanna divert from the subject of the video. I guess I did inadvertently.

Great movie discussion on the history of this film love it ❤👍
18:03 "It is overly long" . Uh, remind us how long is The batman, with pattinson? Uh?
I think it was sexist of them not to put nipples on the Batgirl suit. Equal rights=nips. And at least 3 seconds of beaver.
Crush the patriarchy, y’all.
Alicia Silverstone was a hot batgirl gotta give em that.
They are there look closer....
This wasn't the Batman movie we needed in 1997, but it was the Batman movie we deserved. Still, I find this movie hilarious and gorgeous to look at.
what did we do to deserve it? 😭
Oh, I have been waiting for this episode for a long time. Let the review of this epic train crash begin.
Don't know what's with people being fond of Clooney so much. he smiles all the time in his movies.
I was 6 when this came out too and I got it for Christmas and watched it on Christmas Day too, my sister watched it with me tho and now I can see that she was definitely not enjoying the movie just spending the time with me. I had so many toys from this movie too. Man I wonder if everyone who was 6 when this came out had the same experience.
Only movie I ever walked out of in the middle.
My daughters asked me to shut down the movie in the first 10 minutes.
The car was I think the best part. I’m so happy I got to see it in person
John Glover was also in Shazam! 2019
Wait a minute. Earlier in the video it's said that Joel Schumacher wanted it to be even more campy so it'd be more accurate to the comic. But the poor reception to this "film" made him want to leave because fans deserved a depiction more accurate to the comic. What?!
I remember renting this from Holywood videos and man I was praying that the VHS will just snap
I remember this movie being so stupid that when Batman Begins came out I refused to watch it... I just couldn't bring myself to see another Batman movie...I was just so over Warner ruining the franchise.... eventually I did watch Begins and was incredibly impressed especially excited when they showed that Joker card at the end...
Are you gonna be doing Justice League and Zack Snyder's Justice League as one video after Wonder Woman or do the Snyder Cut as a separate video later on after Wonder Woman 1984?
Snyder Cut as a separate video after 1984.
When you're a kid, watching this in cinema and then rewatching it on VHS multiple times, enjoying every time, this criticism that comes from adult world doesn't mean a damn thing...
I was 15 when this came out and it was already too silly. I had loved 'Forever, but this one was too much. Still, those Freeze and Ivy performances are something to behold... Arnie and Uma both very capable of delivering maximum ham.
Great vid.
John Glover was also in Shazam.
I remember coming out the cinema kinda numb like...'That can't possibly be as bad as it felt..' 2nd viewing just made it worse..
I seen this movie in theaters with my family when it originally released as A 4 YO at the time my mind was totally blown away by this movie it took my attention and I watched every moment of it. This movie definitely was more of a kids product yes I agree.
The Goo Goo Dolls also had a song in the movie, called “Lazy Eye.” You actually hear it in the movie for a couple of seconds.
The movie they are 'singing' is A year without a santa claus
Yep. That was Snow Miser not Jack Frost.
@@joerogers9413 other than that no issues but I mean I do point out the big issues 🤣
@@bagginsfrodos 🙂
I tried to watch this again a few weeks ago...I couldn't finish.
Seeing that logo brings me back.
George Clooney could have been a great Batman if he was a late stage laid back Batman in a more serious tone of film.
And you know what.
Despite the poor material and direction they had to work from, this movie had the perfect cast for their roles as well.
I do not think he could be a good Batman, but he could have done a good job as Bruce Wayne.
That pumpkins song is brilliant
It’s telling, to me, that every time you played a clip of Mr Freeze I immediately start laughing with genuine joy 😂 to me, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Uma Thurman, and the ridiculous action set pieces carry the film on their shoulders. It’s so much fun to watch, but it’s unfortunate that it’s a bit overlong and muddled with half-baked ideas, dull moments, and (sorry George Clooney) a dull lead. I am also disappointed that Batman and Robin’s relationship regresses compared to the previous film and just rehashes it, but worse.
Julie Madison was Bruce Wayne's original girlfriend in the comics. So it was a clever call-out. Like someone actually did research. : )
Multiple channels have been talking about Batman & Robin lately but this one actually had fun trivia like potential casting and Easter eggs, instead of just, "heh, doesn't Arnold sound funny?!"
This is the very first Batman film I’ve ever saw, and I’d be lying if I said this film isn’t a guilty pleasure of mine.
As bad as BATMAN & ROBIN is, I still would’ve like to watch the third movie in the trilogy. The so-called BATMAN TRIUMPHANT.
This movie fits in well with the Adam West series unviverse.
As a fan of the orginal Adam West Batman series I like this movie. Is it a good movie? Pretty much no. Is it a quirky and fun movie? Definitively yes! I'm pretty sure, that they wanted to capture the tone and humor of the original series.
That being said, I also dislike most of the DC movies... not really into the super tragic, dark stuff that is way to present in most of them.
Glover was also in Shazam right? Love the guy
😂, I wasn't fond of this one though. I think George Clooney is overrated as a actor but I think Val was better considering everything else.
I hated FORVER so much that I missed B&R in theatresa altogether and have avoided it ever since. These retrospectives, however, are very entertaining. Thanks!
I have to disagree. I liked Clooney as Bruce Wayne and Batman. The dialogue was just too 1960’s. It wasn’t his fault. Honestly, if I ever meet Clooney I’m gonna tell him I liked his Batman. That’s all.
He was terrible. Lol. Yeah the writing was bad, but he didn't even attempt to be anything but George Clooney in a batsuit. 🙄
After many years I see it differently. It's not a good movie but rather "so bad it's good". It's silly, and campy, with colours taken from Unreal Tournament. Schwarzenegger's one-liners make for a great drinking game (drink every time there's a reference to ice - you won't even remember the film later :D). Clooney didn't seem to be taking the script seriously and his acting looks very tongue-in-cheek (probably after realizing the batsuit had bat-nipples :D). It's just one of the movies which nowadays are a "guilty pleasure". When it was released I was expecting a more serious Burton-like tone but years passed and it's good that such a bad film has been made. It's a bad Batman movie but a good live-action cartoon and at my age, I noticed that sometimes such silliness is necessary when life gets too serious :)
I also loved this movie as kid 😅🥰
I liked this movie as a teenager as well. But, after seeing The Dark Knight in theaters, and rewatching Batman and Robin with a more mature mind, I've disowned this movie ever since.
I saw it in the theaters and remember feeling good when I walked out - like I had seen such an incredible spectacle
Funnily enough, I recently had myself a rewatch of this flick on good ole' VHS not too long ago. I personally have something of a 'love/hate' relationship with this film; I've warmed up to some of its over-the-top, colorful, and toyetic tone. I feel George Clooney's *Bruce Wayne* alone (when he's outside of the Bat-suit) is commendable, Chris O'Donell is good as Robin/Dick Grayson again (even if he does come across as a bit whinier), and Alicia Silverstone and Uma Thurman I genuinely like as Batgirl and Poison Ivy. *No disrespect* whatsoever to Arnold; I can tell he's giving his over-the-top all as Mr. Freeze, but his constant 'Ice Puns' ALWAYS make me ROAR like a LION (🦁) in frustration. And Bane...good _LORD!_ What've they DONE to him (😱)! WHY are the GCPD and especially _Gordon_ reduced to utter BUFFOONERY? Elle Macpherson's Julie Madison is in this WHY? And why DOES Mr. Freeze keep a SNOWFLAKE BABE around his lair?
BUT...the scenes involving Alfred and the Bat-family (especially the ones with him and Bruce), plus the sub-plot of him falling ill, I feel are handled VERY well and come across as genuinely touching (👏). I love Elliot Goldenthal's music again, there are good-&-talented artists on the soundtrack, and I *do* actually have to give props for the design and look of Gotham City; it really can give one the impression of being in a totally _'comic book'_ world, completely distinct from reality.
So overall, I for one don't think "Batman and Robin" is the _"worst,"_ but it's definitely NOT the best Batman flick, either. It falls somewhere in between; 5 stars out of 10 for me.
"I thought at the time. This was going to be a very good career move. Ugh..... It wasn't." George Clooneym
Mr Freeze had a dope ass costume til this day let’s be real 🔥💯
I personally enjoy this movie. Plenty of people liked Forever, but everyone hates this installment. I'll take Batman & Robin any day. Also, all I ever hear is how over the top Schwarzenegger was, but I actually found Uma Thurman much more silly and over the top. Schwarzenegger makes this movie for me lol. Just like the rest of the cast, he knows exactly what kind of campy kids movie he's a part of and he's having a blast 😂
I was 9 when this came out, and I just didnt get it and was one of the first films where I was like "That was kinda bad". Granted I always gravitated towards the Burton films, and to lesser extent Forever).
8:44 That's *Jason* Woodrue, not John!
I was 17 when this came out and went to the movies for it. It definitely completely annoyed me. The theatre had a good crowd in it but everyone was completely silent and a lot of people walked out. I honestly don't know how i made to the end. George Clooney if you are reading this i'll take you up on the offer for a refund.
totally agree with your final opinion always wil be my first batman movie! love it
I would've liked to see Robin Williams as joker. If there are parallel realities i wouldn't mind going there just to see that.
11:36: Barbara? Nah, that is Gabe Newell.
I liked Batman & Robin when I was a kid and I revisited it last March.
I liked it at the time. And Batman Forever.
I thought Tim Burton was essentially asked not to return after Batman Returns, not him leaving to pursue other creative projects
Why did Barbara rock up still in school uniform like did you just leave school and jump straight on a plane
I loved how instead of "wiser" you went with "slightly less stupid"... 😂
You were born in 1991?? Now I feel old.
its so bad its good. i still watch it because its batman and even though the last movies are dark. I keep enjoying this over the top lighthearted batman movie.
Jason Woodrew was in this? Cool, Plant-Master/the Flouranic Man was always a favorite villain of mine in the pre-Crisis comics. And I definitely like the actor Glover usually. I even think Clooney looks the part (facewise that is, not a fan of the suits), but you're right he was being "George Clooney" and not Bruce or the Bat. I've never been able to watch even a full dozen minutes of it. But that's still better than the 3rd movie for me, which I saw (not sure if I saw all of it) but couldn't stand. I think Clooney could do the Green Hornet though. But like you say, it wasn't aimed at my generation; it was suppose to be fun for yours and sell toys to y'all. It did. West and Keaton were my Batman (Batmen?) So I like to think that somewhere out there in the multiverse this and the prior movies exist with Billy Dee Williams as Two-Face and (after this) Patrick Sterwart as a very serious bitter Mr. Freeze.
