After having our DC (Corn Plant) for about 30 years, a few months ago my Wife decided to start watering it...without telling me! So when I saw the leaf tips and edges turning brown I commented to her. She said she had been watering it...alot! So now I'm in the process of trying to dry them out. These plants have lived for at least 30 years and have traveled with us through many States, Canada, and Alaska. I'm retired Military and we were stationed in Alaska for 4 years. We drove to Alaska back in 1996 from southern New Mexico and had to carry the "Mother" plant in our Van to keep it alive. Our heater was kicked loose in Canada when the night temp dropped to 27 below 0! I don't know when the heater went off inside the Van but it was super cold inside....but our Corn plant lived. And stills today! These plants can take a lot of abuse and still flourish. But not too much water........
Mr51Caveman wow I’ve been searching on how to take care of mine my son gave it to me for Mother’s Day this year and since then the leafs have turned brown at the ends how often shon\ild I water this plant please and thanks any other tips let me know 😊
@@universezero2590 I've found that the Corn plants seem to like indirect light. They will sometimes look not so great in the Wintertime but come back during Spring and Summer. A little organic fertilizer a couple times a year. For the first time after about 30 years I bought a moisture meter. It states the level for these type plants should be between 2 and 3. I think 2 is adequate. But without a meter a good watering about every week and a half, 10 days or so is good. Just make sure you have good drainage. (And dont let the soil get soaked and stay like that!) Hope this helps!
@@universezero2590 We usually just cut the tips. If the stalk is thick and healthy you could cut the entire leaf. Sometimes it's strange. Our plants will go on growing spurts producing really nice green leaf's. Leaves. Not sure which of those are correct! Maybe both? Idk. Anyway I have made several new plants from my "Mother" plant. At one time she was almost 7 ft tall and super bushy. We had to cut her down to fit in the Van for the trip from New Mexico to Alaska. Sometimes when I cut a stalk I just stick it in some soil and it will grow a whole new plant. We have "Mom" and another junior and both are about 4 ft tall now. They do like humidity. I have a Pothos (Sp?) that was my Wife's grandmothers when she was young. So guessing it's probably 50 or 60 years old and we have cut and made more juniors than I can count. It's also been around the world! Lots of people are now (hopefully) continuing that Plants linage. We have "Mom" and a junior of hers.
I purchased mine 23 tears ago, and it's still alive. In all this time, it has bloomed one time. Left for vacation, and when I came back, there was about a 2ft long stem sticking out the top with tiny flowers on it.
I love these long detailed videos. Im a single 34 year old man, and im researching plants for my home. Ive never owned plants before… this is extremely helpful for dudes like me. Thanks bro!
I absolutely love mine! It's 8 feet tall. Took about 3yrs only. It grows this incredibly beautiful white stemmed flower that smells up your entire house. It isn't too strong either, which is crazy. It's just perfect! Unfortunately, my daughter drowned it and I was able to save it, but it hasn't produced a flower yet. But that was less than a year ago, so we'll see. I'm highly suggesting them. I have a good 50-60 plants in my home. A decent amount of tropical trees. It's a bit of an obsession I suppose, but a good one🤷♀️

I just subscribed. Thank you for putting out such great videos. My corn plant thanks you, too. I was just given a Fiddle Leaf Ficus and I’m not sure how to care for it. Can you make a video about that? I can’t wait to see more from you!
Thank you so much! Can you maybe speak about the Draceana White Bird? I have it for almost a month, a small one, in 12cm pot. I've been watering it once a week, yet I see some leaves started to curl outward. Also, the green was a bit darker on it - now it's becoming a lighter green. Would love your thought about this one! Thank you! :)
I absolutely appreciate the info you’ve provided about the Dracaena Massangeana! One of my stems had two areas that had leaves and they each “died” off within a few weeks of each other. The leaves quickly turned yellow and brown and the part that connects to the stem became soft and basically broke right off. I’m afraid that stem has root rot now. Is there any way to salvage it and how? Can I do this without hurting the other two healthy stems? And should I do this immediately? It’s still winter here in Washington DC, but I’m afraid if I wait too long it’ll be too late. Thank you SO much for your help! So glad I came across your channel!
I have several un variegated corn plants in my garden. It is mid winter and they are blooming with unremarkable flowers but with a sweet musky perfume that you can smell late at night.
How do you encourage more buds to come out? Can you slice or cut the sides? But not all the way, similar to a scratch but deeper. I want mine to be fuller and more leaves.
Thank you alot for doing a video about this beautiful draceana, it's the nicest one in my opinion. I have mine now I think over 3 years. Sadly it didn't grow slot, more like so slow you can't see a difference. But I looks stunning always, because I bought as a big crown without a stem. The leaves are like 80 cm long, so I takes alot of space already. So, I would like it to grow faster, maybe I need change the position, and I will change the soil to a mix of non organic volcanic rock system with low self watering potential very airy. I hope that helps. But it's not that easy to change where it stands, because I don't have the space everywhere for it. Its to widely. But I do love it sooo much, it was my dream to get one without a stem but a big one. So I will take your tips and try something for my inviroment here.
This was so thorough and awesome!! I just got one of these and this video helped a lot. I would love to see something on palms - especially ones that are good for low light - parlor, kentia, majesty etc. Also the philodendron family - I see people with monstera Swiss cheese plants in darker places but I thought they needed more light? Anyway great video - thanks so much!
Hi, There! I am so glad you are back with more information! You information is very well detailed. The only problem that I have is that I was so happy to see this big a beautiful draceana, that I didn’t check the roots system. Which it wasn’t much... and it was put in just coco choir. So now I don’t know what type of soil should I put it in 😩 could you please help me?

Thanks for the overview on the Dracaena. I’m quite surprised that this is one of easiest plants to care for yet there are so many problems that can happen. I bought mine later in summer and have right always transplanted into bigger pot. Now I’m thinking this might not have been good choice since pot size much larger than old one. The plant is showing number of leaves turning yellow then brown. These don’t appear to be mechanical as in some cases they start near middle of leaf. I could attach pictures. I always now water plant from filtered pitcher to resolve chlorine and fluoride issue but not sure if filter taking 100% of chemicals away. At some point I have over watered the plant and that could have been the cause. Now I’m watering every two weeks. Do you think issue is water contamination or over watering? Perhaps I need to use bottled water going forward. Thanks for the help.
Thank you so much for sharing this! I have one question, can i cover with plastic or tape the top cuttings? Top open part of the stem is decaying and skin is slowly dying.. eventually plants stem has decayed all the way down the stem and its skin is slowly detaching.. pls help
Hi just purchased my dracerna massangeana today it was beautiful and healthy.but I left in a car for whole day it was 28 degree here in australia. The leave turn gray it looks really sick
I'm a little bit confused. Did you say it likes direct sunlight or not? Also if someone likes to keep the plant more inside the room for the looks. Could the plant keep it's color by moving near large window 1 or 2 days a week or few hours here and there while im gone. As it's easy to move.
Thank you for this video. I also watched your other Dracaena video. I got Dracaena corn plant from a friend who was leaving the country but it wasn't maintained well. I repotted it as it had too much water. It has been with me for about 2 months now. I find that many of the leaves are turning yellow gradually. This is a gradual process but I can see at least 8 leaves turning yellow currently. Can you please suggest, what I should do. Thanks again
I always put banana peels in my water that i use for my plants. It works very well, but I think it causes the plant to produce more foliage than buds. Which is great goes some plants. Am I right? Maybe I shouldn't use only that potassium water. If so, what should I use?
Great videos. I would like to grow a Dracaena Massangeana from little and I got a question to that. What do I have to do, to get a nice wrinkled stem like the plant on the right side in the video and how long does It take to look like that?
This video is awesome, thank you! My plant was given to me not in great condition. What do I do with all the brown leaves, Do I cut them off?any tips on how I can bring it back to life?
I have a plant that looks EXACTLY like a corn plant. I bought it in a6 inch pot last August, it's now in a HUGE container! The only thing is, it does NOT, HAVE A STALK! It looks EXACTLY like these plants, but no stalk, and I can't find out why! 😟
I have the same issue. The plant just gets bigger and bigger but its close to the soil and there is no stem that I can see. Nobody talks about this variety on RUclips.
I'm moving across the country. Can I cut the dracaena stems & just take 2 stems with me (no foliage, no soil)? Will the stems still grow, or just bud new "green" stalks with leaves? ie. how big of stems should I cut? Thank you!
I have a question on my Dracaena, it started growing a baby arm but didn’t make it. Why is that? I also thought I had to repot in and in the process I found out I wasn’t watering enough.. shame on me....! Should I do anything other then water more often?
How do we get the offspring canes to thicken up to “mother” cane levels? We have a plant that’s over 30 years old, his name is Bob. Bob has many progeny but the canes all stay around 1-1.5” thick. They get 9 feet TALL just never thicken. Sadly Bob’s “mother” cane died completely, and I fear we will just lose him all together if I don’t thicken that up.
I just bought one yesterday. I have it inside in a area were it will receive three hours of morning sunlight. Is that enough exposer to light for it to keep the yellowish stripes? In the Philippines its called a Fortune plant.
Can you salvage a stem that has broken roots? Cause in the previous video on general draceana, its best to take it out of the pot. So does that mean the stem is dead and cannot be saved or repotted?
Hello, I have a dracaena with 3 stems, large, medium and small. The medium stem is completely dead. No buds are growing anymore and the outer skin of the stem feels detached from the trunk. I removed a bit of the skin and the inside looks brown and moldy. How can I cut it down? Can it grow again? Thank you.
Hi! I cut a stem of a dracaena massangeona from a friend. The part I cut has some young shoots coming out and I put the stem in water, hoping it would root. Should I put it in soil directly? Will it even root in water, since the stem is so thick and woody? Please hellllllppp! Thank you 🙏
Please I need your help as soon as possible, I have big corn plant with three trunks with many branches, It was very healthy. Two weeks ago I repotted it in a big pot and I don’t know why I did that, Many of its leaves become yellow and brown and every day it looses many leaves . Please is there any way to save it
Some of the leaves on my corn plant are super lite green almost white. Some say this means it needs fertilizer. Is that true? Also some of them have brown tips with yellow halo around the brown and some just have yellow tips. I have a moisture stick that says they are moist. Is my plant telling me to water it a lot less now?
Hi. I bought this plant, 2 in a pot, like mother and baby. Then I decided to divide them into 2 separate pots since I noticed that their roots are not long or grown and not attached to each other. My question is, can this plant be separated or they have to be together all the time? I see some changes in the leaves, brown on tips and fading green into light yellow. Not sure because of overwatering or because I separated them. Pls help.
Thank you for such a thorough video! This was great! I do have this plant at home. And I am worried about it. I’ve had her for one year and I recently repotted it in January and gave her potting mix from Miracle Grow. She sits by an east window behind a white curtain so her light is filtered. Lately she has been getting brown spots and the leaf tips are browning and I’m not sure if it’s the soil I used. I think I may have over watered. Is there anything I can do to save it? Just the tips are brown. Any help?
Most potting mixes, including those from Miracle Grow, are quite dense so they hold on to moisture for too long. For all houseplants (except maybe moisture-loving ferns), it's best to always add an aerating ingredient (like perlite or pumice) to the potting mix to improve the drainage. If you re-pot it and include at least 25% perlite, you should notice that the pot dries out more quickly than before, which is healthier for the plant than sitting for weeks in soggy soil. During repotting, if you notice any soft black roots, rot may have started so these must be removed. In addition, you can try moving it to a brighter position (west or south) because east light is the lowest light level after north. More light means the plant will use more water, again reducing the time it is sitting in wet soil. Of course, if you choose a south-facing window, it is crucial to filter any direct light from touching the leaves.
@@danid6171 Thank you so much for the reply! This helps very much. I can tell that the soil is a little too moist. I checked the roots and it is okay, but I will try and find perlite to helps with drainage for this plant. I didn't know that the East windows were the second lowest light, that's fascinating. I love this plant, so thank you for helping!
As always, any pot with no drainage holes is a death trap for any plant. Unless it's a cashpot, just for show, with an interior pot for drainage. Cheers
Hi I have a Dracena limelight which I water with rainwater only and the leaves are developing brown spots and tips can you provide a reason and solution? Thank you
hello, I added a very little amount of water 1 week after I bought it. The soil is still wet but the leaves' tips are browning. what am i doing wrong? I've only had it for 2 weeks now.
I need to bring my 2 mass corn plants inside for winter but do not know how to do that. They are about 5ft tall in 20" Pots and I don't want to bring in any bugs any suggestions, tips etc thanks
If you can(weather), spritz the leaves with peroxide(over and under); and then hose it down with water, on shower setting(gentle). Pour cinnamon on the surface, and work it in about 1/4 inch to an inch; and add cinnamon on top of the soil for good measure. Worse case scenario, use diatomaceous earth. Cheers
I have a mass cane and accidentally damaged the roots during repotting, I loosened the soil around the pot and pulled and most of the roots ripped off . anybody know if there’s any saving her ?? 😔it’s only my second plant

What about repotting and soil
I can't figure out what type my dracena is. It has leaves that looks like this one but doesn't have the tree stems.

Dracena dracaena. Ola necessito de ajuda. A minha planta tem pequenas manchas castanhas e não sei qual é o problema.
My dracaena is getting yellow. it's in bright spot, potting mix with 50% perlite, humidifier, filtered water, it's dry for 4 days only. I'm confuse.
My corn plant is turning yellow on bottom leaves what can I do?
*If only hair could be grown as easily as plants*
What do I do if the water is not draining from the pot of my cane plant? Do I repot it with new better draining soil?
I just brought 1 of this plant which type of pot should I keep it in? Pots with hole in the bottom ? Any recommendations?
As always, any pot with no drainage holes is a death trap for any plant. Unless it's a cashpot, just for show, with an interior pot for drainage. Cheers
Can i use perlite with dracaena plants??? because there are reports that perlite contains fluoride.
Hi I have a Dracena limelight which I water with rainwater only and the leaves are developing brown spots and tips can you provide a reason and solution? Thank you

What I should do the root is weak and the stem starts turning into dark colour?
Can I propagate the piece I cut off?
i've killed like 3 of these. i finally figured out the light situation but then the stems on the taller stalk drooped. 🙄
I didn’t understand the cutting that you said cut one at a time
Very informational. But one question I thought brown color was due to sun and yellow means too much watering? I just purchased one!
why drasaenas become lighter if they get a little of light the don't become darker ?
So what do I do for the brown spots do I cut them ? I’m transferring it to a pot that can be drained

Dracena dracaena. Hello I need help. My plant has small brown spots and I don't know what the problem is.
Please share if you have the answer to this one.
Cheers
wait this just came out today
Can anyone plzzz tell me why my Dracena crinkles its leaves plzzzz

When we put its stem in water. Where should we put it? In direct or indirect sunlight ?
