If you are serious about learning all you can about your plants, this is the guy you need to go to. And I like that when he shows a close up, such as how and where to cut a stem, I can actually see exactly where he cut. Thank you Swedish plantguy.
I'm in my 60s, and this was the most thorough and comprehensive plant video I've ever seen. Instant subscriber! 👍🏻
I don't have a ponytail palm but heck if I am not here watching the entire video anyway.
Honestly, me too! I dont even like plants i cant water at least once a week.
@@jesselabaniqued8283 hahahahaha
Me too😁
I bought my ponytail as a 4 in."decor" plant. I actually bought two. They glued stones to the dirt. One died. I couldn't tell if it needed watering because of the stones. I bust the one out of the pot and repotted the plant. Sixteen years later... My ponytail is 3'11" tall and 1'6" at it's base. It also has 5 stems. I only cut the 'hair' when the ends start to brown. I love my ponytail plant! Thanks for sharing 🙂

I was given a ponytail palm that has 3 bulbs. Can I separate these?
@@amysandifer9421 I got a similar pot with 3 small ones. I did separate them. Now, six months later they are doing well.
Just be careful not to damage the roots too much! You also need to make sure there won’t be any air pockets in the rootsystem when you repot these babies. I had some trouble to fill in all the gaps in the rootsystem with soil, but looks like everything went ok since they are doing good now 😊

I also purchased a ponytail with stones,
It died couldn't tell when it needed

I worked at Spring Hill Nurseries in the 1970s. Huge Mailorder Nursery in Ohio. When I moved out of my parents home, I got a Pomytail in a six inch pot. I kept it with me for a couple years but gave it to my sister when I moved to California in 1976. She kept that plant in Ohio for 40+ years. It got quite large. Sadly she lost it a couple years ago and now lives in assisted living. We have two big Pots with multi trunked ones on our back deck now that are maybe 15 years old. We can grow them outdoors here year round. Cheers.
Came here to learn about my ponytail palm and you guys didn’t disappoint. Highly informative as always.

I empathize, I have gotten my share of ‘paper cuts’ from my ponytail palm.
I have two 5ft pony tail plants in front of my house in the ground. They just look after themselves but have sprouted lots of pups this year! Thanks for the video, Im going to try separate them with my very un-green fingers!
Jessica La Roche
You must live some place nice. I can't put ponies in the ground where I live. We can get quite a bit of snow. You mentioned "un-green thumb/fingers ... but plants are pretty easy to care for. Most of them, you do get an occasional fussy one, might lose it. A plants sometimes "shows" you what it needs. For the most part, direct sun, for a lot of tropicals, will burn, and sometimes kill the plant. As far as watering them, they Definitely tell you if they're thirsty!
And 😁.... how didn't the separation go? I hope it worked well, it's thriving and happy! 😊🙂
I don't water mine until I can see the foot contracting or dimpling. It's old though, and has somewhat large feet, two of em. They can survive almost anything. Just be sure to use a cacti/succulent soil, if you pot any. Overwatering is just about the only way to kill them. I've let mine go for up to five months without watering, and it lives through many freezing days, from within our garage, for the past five years. Your thumbs are sure to be rather green, in regards to this plant. It's so easy and robust. It's just very very slow growing. Mine is 25 years old and only about four feet tall. The trunk wasn't cut to force many stems and a massive amount of foliage. I suppose your sprouts probably won't be either. Anyway, good luck, dude.
Again, the best video I’ve ever viewed on this magnificent plant. Thank you so much for sharing this with us all.
This is the most thorough video I've seen about plant care..love it! I have a whole list of plants I'm hoping you cover! ;) thanks for the knowledge
This was possibly the most educational video I have seen so far. I have learn a lot. Thank you so much!!!!

I absolutely adore your videos. They are the most informational of any videos on YT. The amount of time and effort put into each one is simply phenomenal. Thank you! Peace, AM
Cats Love this plant. I have to keep it up where it is impossible for our cats to reach. It is tropical catnip. Tough plant though. The cats stripped it before I realized how tasty they thought it was. It bounced right back and flourished. Amazingly the cats did not suffer any ill effects from the banquet.
My cats have been chewing on the tips 🤦🏼♀️
So true
Ja....
My cats turn into regular lawnmowers as soon as i turn my back on them....😐😶😤😒😬
I have a 'thing' for plants such as Ponytail Palm, Pregnant Onion, Frizzle Sizzle, thus, I truly appreciated this video as well as all the rest.

Thanks for your update on my new Ponytail Palm.
I love my ponytail palms and I love your video. Thank you!
Very informative! Thanks!
Best plant ever. Highly recommend. Mine has a trunk circumference of 10-12”. It is very old. Maybe 10 years or older. Over 3’ high. I have neglected it and almost froze it outside before bringing inside in fall. Had to cut back dead stalks. That triggered it to grow amazing. I’m a better mother to this beautiful plant. I will definitely subscribe to your channel. 👍💚🇨🇦
Best video I’ve seen. Thank you very much.
Thank You for helping me and many many more!!

I like Sweden and I like plants, wow
I'm so grateful that I'm able to find your channel about taking care of ponytail plant..
My daughter gifted me this plant for my birthday last year 2021 by ordering online since she lives in UK..the ponytail plant arrived beautifully and I named her curly cause the leaves are curling..I love plants but sometimes I'm too busy working..
Anyway my ponytail turned yellow brownish cause i guess I over water it now I realized since I watch your video and I placed my ponytail in a dark corner...I was afraid I thought it will die in the sun now I know it should be in a direct sun or partial light. Just yesterday I took it and placed it in front of my apartment door where the sun is shining..I hope and pray that my curly will survive 🙏..I really mess up on taking care of her ..
You have immensely help me how to take care of this kind of plants and especially on watering etc...thank you so very much for sharing and will watch more of your videos ..so knowledgeable!
Overwatering is the easiest and most common reason why people can't keep plants alive. It's so so easy to do. Just be sure yours is in a well draining soil. I just use a generic cactus and succulent blend from any home and garden center. Just don't water it until the soil dries out. You can even go months without watering. I ususlly don't water mine during the entire winter. The massive structure at the bottom of the trunk holds enough moisture to sustain the plant for God knows how long, at least half a year, I would say. I don't water mine until I see the base begin to dimple and contract, but you can water it much more frequently. Just be sure to not water it until the soil dries out.
First time watching you. I just purchased my first ponytail palm that I have always adored(I'm 61yrs old) and this video taught me all I need to know. Thank you
Very detail explanation ❤
Thank you for such great information
Great information, thank you😊
I just bought a ponytail palm today so this was much needed information! Actually there are 4 palms in the pot.
Thank you for the information.
Thanks for all the info. I just ordered one of these.
Thank you so much for this detailed video. It will definitely help me in the future. About one year ago , I bought the tiniest cluster of 3 in a 2 inch pot to add some texture to an arrangement . I transplanted that tiny thing with the others in a nice 8 inch pot , and it is now 8 inches tall with beautiful green leaves half way down the pot. It’s on a northeast facing porch with good sun and constant air circulation . All my succulents love that spot, but I’m most pleased about the Ponytail Palm doing so well.
FANTASTIC VIDEO
I found your video very helpful. I didn't know how to cure my plant but thanks to your advices I will make it grow again.🙏😊
Also love this video !!!!
Thank you for being so clear! It is so frustrating to look up things like-“brown tips” and the “answer” is often something like-“brown tips means you watered too little or too much or your humidity is too low or too high.” What the heck can I do with that? It’s completely useless information! I appreciate how you said the exact difference between brown that is under watering and brown that is over watering and brown that is normal!! Thank you!!
watching your vids is like attending a seminar. i feel like an expert after 😁😍
🪴🌿Excellent information 🎉. I just got a plant from my elderly aunt ❤😊😊🌿🪴Thanks you!
Very interesting to listen , I m learning clearly and get a lots of knowledge., about plant I have and don't have yet. I'm a plant lovers and collectors but my place is not big enough to get more I wanted. I like to thank you a lot for your reading the minds of people which do and don't about the different of taking care of plant
Wow such great information. I have a ponytail plant and I have definitely done some things wrong. Thank you so much for this video loved it 😊
My ponytail palm is approximately 40 years old and 6 feet tall. I’m thinking about pruning it as you discussed. However I’m not sure I have the heart to do it! 😂
I like your explanation about the plant I just bought one small
Thank you so much
Thank you so much. I was so frightened that I was losing my pony tail plant because her tips were turning brown and crispy. I appreciate your help.
Brilliant video! Grade A content, guys. This is everything a plant lover would ever need to know to successfully grow this plant, and then some. I'm a bit worried about my 25yo specimin now, though, that I purchased from a Lowes or Home Despot, when I was a naive and ignorant nineteen year old. We didn't have amazing hobbyist and how to videos like this back then. t's kinda loose at the base, as you've shown one to be in the video. I doubt it's from rot though, as I don't even water it until I see the base begin to contract, and it's been in a generic store bought cactus mix that drains practically immediately. It lives in the garage though, and it has been knocked over many times by children, and it's a rather large plant, though not as large as the old ones you have in the video. It's a tallish double, with feet the sizes of a softball and a baseball, pretty much. It isn't chopped off at the tops, so that it produces multiple masses of foliage. Single trunks with rosettes of leaf blades that are 5-6 feet long, sprouting up high and bending back down, onto the ground. It also weathers the north Alabama winters, from inside the garage. Temperatures always drop below freezing during winter months, for many days, intermittently, but in five years, it has never shown any ill effects that I have noticed. I sure do love it. It appears to be very healthy, even though it has lived through many years of neglect, due to my mental health and negligence. There have been stretches of several months when it has gone without any water whatsoever. Maybe it can persist in its current state, though I don't know if it could make a completely full recovery. I planted it into a 22 inch pot when it was still very small, and it's remained untouched in that pot for over 20 years. I plan on repotting it next year, once winter passes. I suspect it will be able to go back into a 22" pot. It sure is a beauty. I wonder what kinda price it might fetch. Probably not enough for me to be willing to part with it. Anyway, there's the life story of my Elephant's Foot Palm. It makes such a wonderful, incredible, gorgeous houseplant. So resilient and stately.
Good plant
thank you for the video
Thanks
This plant is one of my wishlist..
Hi.... From indonesia
Very nice thank you so much
I have this plant. And I like it
I enjoy and learn a lot from all the videos but especially the "All you need to know about" videos. They are excellent. Since I have 4 Beaucarnia recurvatas that video was super useful. I have various plants in my appartment and would like to learn more on how I can better take care of them. I would love it if you could make videos about the following houseplants: Strelitzia nicolai, Dypsis lutescens, Howea fosteriana, adeniums, and the Pachira aquatica. I hope you get lots of requests for these plantvideos :-) . Thank you for all the clear advices you give.
Recurvatae would be the plural of the species, I believe. I love the scientific Latin names.
Thanks much for all the info. Quite long and redundant but you missed NOTHING! Thanks
I have had a small pony tail palm for 2 years now and has grown much. I have it on back patio with some Sun and shade on a bistro table.
Thank You!!!
GREAT job on this summary! First thumbs up I have EVER given to a video in over five years. It answered my question on 'whether' I can cut the main stem of the plant, but hopefully I can ask you to go one step further. What happens if I do? When is it best to do this (summer/winter)? How long will I have to wait for new "pups" to appear? (I know it will be a year or more before they form a crown or canopy of any sort, but will it be 1/3/6 months before I can be assured that the plant has even survived this surgery?) My plant now is near the ceiling, and I have to either "chop the top" (half way up), or hope I can find a corporation with a tall lobby, who would be willing to accept this as a gift. I have no hope of overwintering it indoors for another year (Ontario, Canada).
Again, congratulations on a very thorough and accurate review of the care requirements for this plant. I've had mine for thirty-odd years, and can't disagree with a single comment in your presentation. Kudos!
You help me so much
This is the best video on RUclips about Ponytail Palms, very informative! I inherited a large ponytail in September, but it only has one stem with no cut for offshoots. I’m waiting until the spring to prune the top off, and hoping that I don’t kill it. It will be so pretty and full with multiple shoots.
I have two that are almost connected at the base. Had em 25 years. They haven't been chopped off at the top either. I prefer it that way. Make sure not to behead yours unless you're satisfied with the size of the trunk, as it will grow no larger once you sever the top. I prefer mine the way they are. I'm hoping the feet will grow substantially larger, maybe even sprout more stems from the trunk. A couple of years ago tiny leaves began to grow out from the base of my smaller plant, the base about the size of a baseball. I didn't tend to it much though, and the offshoot died back, unfortunately. Best of luck with yours :)
I have a pony tail that I bought when it was only about 4" tall fro Lowe's for under $1.00 because it was dying. It is 9 years old now.❤
Thanks for the great video. Too late. I bought my pony tail and replanted it within a few weeks. I also planted it in a pot 2 steps up. Thank god its doing great. I added lots of pumice to the cactus soil that I used.
Don't worry. I went into a 22 inch pot right away with mine, when I was young and ignorant. Of course we didn't have amazing sources of knowledge like this back then. It isn't chopped off at the top like these though. I'm glad. It was just a small plant from Home Despot, or some such place. It's still in the same pot and hasn't been repotted in 20-25yrs. Strong as an ox. Lives in the garage lol
Thank you so much for all the great information, I hope I don’t kill my pony tail palm🤞🤞
I have 2 of these, one of which came in small, flat Bonsai pot with rocks glued over top of the soil. I guess that is how some growers send it out, as I saw a woman talking about it online and then knew that was what the problem with mine was. They are *really* glued on, it takes quite a bit to take it apart.
❤️
