  • It's been 4 years since I repotted my Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea recurvata).
    I'm also trimming the foliage to make the tree more compact.

    I repotted my Ponytail Palms less than a year ago and trimmed the roots back like you did and those roots are already coming out of the bottom of the pot again. Man are the roots fast growers. Love my Ponytail Palms! I think I'm obsessed with them. Have three but want more.

    HUGE thank you on showing the soil you used! I found a Ponytail palm in crisis in a store and took a chance on it then scrambled to fix it. On youtube its sort of crazy the amount of misdirection you can take on videos of soil composition for these. I was able to get this Bonsai soil and treat the roots and now hope for the best. TY!

    After seeing the fern as it grows naturally, really liked the cement pot and agree about the pot the apple tree is in. Maybe another time, maybe another pot. It looks reallly, really good after pruning and in it’s old pot. You looked 🙂 really pleased. Certainly will take up less space 🙂 in the plant room this winter! 🌬🌬

    You could have put the fronds up in a pony-tail holder!!! 😂🤨🤣. On an “actual potentially useful comment” side of things, I would advocate for always keeping this tree in a round pot. The trunk is such a perfect circle, and in my humble opinion, I think that an oval pot would not have the dramatic impact of a perfectly round trunk centered in a round pot. ☺️

    So nice to see you working on this plant. I have one which I repotted into a large patio size pot a few months ago. It is enjoying its days sunbathing on our patio. As you can imagine, they grow very well here in s.e. Florida. I trim up the "tails" so that I can see the trunk. I think they grow best for bonsai in deep pots. Yours sure looks GREAT after your work on it. You could put a "fairie door" on the exterior of where you started that hold. Would look cute?

      @grannyplants1764 10 месяцев назад

      I’d be interested in that, especially storing it. I collect it in gallons for my few carnivorous plants and I always wonder if I should cap it or not …🤔🌱. I have a big markdown Ponytail from Lowe’s, I repotted it in perlite, orchid bark and Miracle Gro soil and it’s doing well, I was a bit worried about the broken roots but not ant longer after seeing this video, very cool idea for bonsai ! 😊🪴

  • @gyorgyszabo1038

    I think that to maintain its original shape, the ends of its leaves should not be snipped, and when repotted it must keep all of its roots.

    Hi Nigel, hoping you can help me. I have three of these in one cluster. One of them has holes in it. How can I be sure its rot or bugs? I see neither. I wait until its fully dry in between watering.

  • @billarmstrong7155
    @billarmstrong7155 Год назад +1

    I noticed you used Bonsai supply bonsai soil instead of your regular turface and perlite. Any reason for that. I have been using their soil for years on some trees but I still use your turface and pearlite on others.But im not a pro like you. I know my Brazilian Rraintree really started growing good with the bonsai supply soil. It just kind of sat there in the turface and pearlite not really happy but not unhappy either.

    What happened to your hair, Nigel? Do you need to trim it some, like your bonsais? Kidding, or course.. I have a ponytail palm about 45 yrs old which I grew from a 2" pot to now, now in a relatively small 20" pot.. Those pics of large ones growing in soil remind me how large mine could've gotten throug these many years!
