_King of New York_ is your classic "guilty pleasure" movie. Looks great, sounds great, mesmerizing performances, full of drugs/sex/violence, and has one of the best shoot outs ever filmed. Yea, the logic of the whole thing is muddled, but so is most people's way of thinking. The only real low point is the wedding reception scene.
Miller's Crossing was great, but Ebert is right in his questioning of Gene about how some things happened. Watching it again recently, I realized how it really needs to be seen more than once. And really paid attention to.
An industry cannot regulate itself. It requires outside accountability from independent sources, either from government or civil organizations that represent outside interests. There's no exception judging by history. The MPAA is a corrupt industry insider that has financial ties to all the big players and zero accountability to the public. Nothing good can come out of it.
King of NY is a Masterpiece. The whole point of the hospital subplot was to show the criminals weren’t all bad. And there were many scenes with the Cops that should that they were about as destructive as the gangsters. And that’s the point. The merging of the two extremes.
I really like King of New York. I have to respectively disagree with the both of them. There is definitely a big contradiction to Frank White, but at the end of the day he's a criminal, a good one and does what he does best - but maybe this time, after prison, he's doing it with a bigger better purpose.
Exactly. The conflict is something I definitely could buy. A drug dealer with a conscience about his community. Yeah Frank White was violent, but his scene on the subway towards the end of King of New York was pretty awesome with Frank explaining his reasoning.
Say what you want about Miller's Crossing but Ebert busted Siskel 3 times in this review, haha. This is one reason these guys were so interesting together.
VERY bad King of NY takes. I'm happy to hear Siskel give The Two Jakes a shoutout, but it's not up to the level of Miller's Crossing. Ebert often has poorly-aged takes. He gets hung up on the silliest details.
Pacific heights as a kid the commercials made it seem so scary. Strange plot. I hated the last picture show . Maybe bc I was born way after & watched it as a pre teen but I didnt get the hype so no clue who would want a sequel.
Pacific Heights was billed as a Thriller- I was bored to tears- there was nothing remotely Suspenseful in this film and a good cast was wasted - What was the point of this movie
Pacific Heights cheap cynical thriller as they both acknowledge, John Schlesinger in his Michael Winner phase. King of New York style over substance but it's Ferrara's style. Miller's Crossing one of the Coens best, wish they were still working on this level
I don't think Miller's Crossing is one of their best. I'd put it about middle. It isn't as bad as these two portray it. I think by this point the standard imposed on the Coens was simply higher than the average director, so I accuse them of being too strict with the Coens. Of course, not long after this came Barton Fink, which cemented their status even with elevated standards.
@@zxbc1 Top three Coens for me: The Big Lebowski, Miller's Crossing, Blood Simple with original soundtrack intact, The Four Tops Same Old Song like a Greek Chorus. Post Lebowski I haven't liked much
"Miller's Crossing" is perfect. I wouldn't change one frame.
Agreed! 👍👍

Roger's got a horrible take on Miller's Crossing! SMH. Thanks for the channel :)

To hear them talk about the NC-17 rating as if it would change anything is sad

I liked Pacific Heights. I thought it was a very good thriller

First and I love these, please keep it up
Love the content you've posted, thankyou 👍🏻
Very good thrillers here. Schlesinger's, Coen's and Ferrara's. All of them are exciting
love Miller's Crossing
Was working at the academy cinema when all these movies came out
King of NY was a Abel masterpiece
Why was Henry & June rated NC-17?
The King of New York had a big impact on Tarantino! Great movie

Roger's real insect voice chimes through.

You two liked Beavis and Butthead but didn’t like Pacific Heights. You too are difficult.
Beavis and Butthead is funny is why.
Pacific Heights was billed as a Thriller- I was bored to tears- there was nothing remotely Suspenseful in this film and a good cast was wasted - What was the point of this movie
Agree. Melanie Griffith was the only good thing about this film.
kind of a silly premise...bugs(cockroaches ha ha) the neighbors to try and buy the house cheaply...

Totally disagree with Roger’s take on Miller’s Crossing.
Wtf is going on with the sound
Stress does increase the risk of miscarriage. I loved Gene but at times he was an early practitioner of bs virtue signaling.
Miller's Crossing is the best gangster film ever made.
Lol don't get crazy.
Not even close. Rififi, Goodfellas, The Roaring Twenties, The Public Enemy, those the elite.
@@ricardocantoral7672Don’t forget The Godfather 1 & 2! 😃
Ooo, and Casino!
Ebert is a 100% right about Millers Crossing
Ebert was right about Miller's Crossing.
King of New York! superior gangster film...Miller's Crossing was sooooo boring, unwatchable.
I liked both but certainly prefer King of New York more.
All garbage movies.
Cohen brothers are so damn overrated
