    For everyone wondering why Silva had so few guards and no snipers around: Silva WANTED to get captured by Bond and sent back to Britain, because his goal was to take revenge on M for her betrayal and kill her personally. As Bond said later in the film Silva had planned his own escape and waited till M was vulnerable in a public enquiry before he tried to kill her with his henchmen disguised as coppers. In this scene Bond overestimated the number of guards around him and could've saved the girl if he'd acted sooner. Silva wanted to see him hurt emotionally so he murdered the girl, and out of anger Bond flipped when he felt he had nothing to lose.

      It's simpler than that... Before he wouldn't try to make a move because it would put her at great risk, he probably didn't expect Silva to just shoot her. After she was dead he went to the "nothing to lose" mentality which allowed him to make his move.

    Admittedly speculating on the motivations of a fictional character, but I can easily wager that in this scene Bond would be thinking that if he can stall long enough he can probably save her, but only if he can do so without compromising his mission. He puts on a good show of seeming like he’s not a credible threat with the shaky aim (Silva commenting on his test scores lent that credibility) to draw things out and make the goons lower their guard a bit after he’d finally used his one shot.
    I honestly expected on my first viewing that Silva would prolong the game, forcing James to take multiple shots or administer non-fatal shots of his own. Instead it was just ‘my turn- BANG’. Took everyone in the theatre by surprise from the sounds around me.
    In another scenario where this ruse succeeded, it’s possible Bond could have counted on the sound of the helicopters providing a split second distraction for him to make his move.

      Those weapons are almost impossible to shoot the target with that much presicion, before modern gunbarrels with helix surfaces, most shots were not on point so hitting the glass was just a huge game of luck in any case.

    • @joey7437-c4n
      @joey7437-c4n Год назад +11

      Watching it I noticed how many of the goons had their guns in their hands, not just in pockets or behind their backs. I think this is a credible take. He could have taken them but he knew it was extremely risky, he wanted them to lower their guards because they were at least aware of how dangerous he could be, if still underestimating him, and he wanted to save the girl and not kill Silva.
      Once Silva just killed her outright, the goons not worried too much about him with an empty gun in hand, he was released.

    • @joey7437-c4n
      @joey7437-c4n Год назад +5

      AND to further this, by the time he goes to kill everyone 2 goons have their guns in their pants, and the really cocky one has now gotten so close to Bond to so Bond can pull the maneuver (at the first he was a good meter back and the table was between them). Even the order of kills reflects his concern: he shoots the one guy who had been carrying his gun before, but is next to Silva and therefore would have the easiest shot against Bond, throws the gun at the black dude to distract him because he still had his weapon in hand, is able to still shoot Mr. Gun-My-Crotch before he was able to fire, has to use Cocky Goon as a shield from Mr. Automatic who has already recovered and had an open shot by that point, and still manages NOT to get Silva shot in the process. I always felt like the scene was getting across that Bond was in a tight situation and couldn't come out completely on top, but really paying attention to how the scene is shot really confirms it for me at least.

    • @red2977
      @red2977 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@joey7437-c4n I don't get all the comments saying the goons lowered their guard. They did not do so. For the most part they didn't even move from before he took the shot compared to after he took the shot. Its just not a plausible argument. Yes silva having a bullet in his gun may have been why bond did what he did. Maybe he was just stalling for backup to arrive and didn't think Silva would kill the girl like that

If Bond had attempted to disarm and kill the guards Silva would have shot the girl out of spite. If he'd turned the gun on Silva Silva's men would have killed him and probably shot the girl. This ladies and gentlemen is the Kobayashi Maru. A no win scenario.

      I imagine he waited because after missing the shot (maybe intentionally, who knows what the writers had in their heads), and the girl being shot, the guards would be less on guard. The weapons were now fired, and Bond had failed. He wasn't the scary man they thought he was. They let their guards down for a second and he struck. Maybe could've pulled it off before, but safer this way.

      Unfortunately, I agree with the woke comment. It’s awesome that such large issues are tackled in the spotlight, and also fun to see the doors open to a different audience for suspension of disbelief. The downside is once the entertainment is so large and vague it no longer has a certain magic. Like if Laura Croft was replaced with a black male. Still would be a badass film, just has a different pull that seems less genuine and more of a political move.
      I don’t know if there is a “right” answer for all of those terribly complex issues that can be portrayed on screen, but the idea that some large and powerful groups of people are trying is encouraging for the future of our planet, if not necessarily for the film itself.

      @@fendysusanto876 A helicopter designed to minimise its radar cross-section is very different to a helicopter that makes no sound. The "stealth" helicopters used during the Bin Laden raid happened to be modified UH-60 blackhawks with the intention of mitigating their chances of getting detected by Pakistani authorities. Whilst this was successful, it did little to decrease the actual sound of the helicopters which would have still been very loud as the turbine engines used on the black hawk generate a whooping 1,622 shaft horsepower. Needless to say, all of the members of the compound would have heard the helicopters well before they landed. And I am not really sure where you got the "Vietnam soldier" thing from because UH-1 Iroquois, AH-1 Cobra's and CH-46's where loud as hell and there was no intention of disguising that. In fact, their loud sound eventually led to problems as it was able to alert the Viet Cong of an impending attack. So in conclusion, yes those choppers should have been heard well before they actually arrived and unless by some Hollywood miracle they happened to have the worlds most efficient muffler for the engine whilst all the while having the sound of roughly 400rpm on some massive rotor be entirely negated, then there is no real way of disguising their approach.

    So correct me if I’m wrong but that is a smoothbore pistol, and if Bond tried to make that shot, even if he was a world champion marksmen, there’s still only a 5% chance he makes that shot because smoothbore rounds will float all over the place as they travel out of the barrel. If you fire an old musket a person can actually watch the round go left and right and up and down and will never ever hit right on the target the way a modern round would and will land within around a 5 inch radius from the intended spot. Bond knew this, so he missed on purpose to try and save the girl but then the girl was shot and he knew that he had to leave guns blazing. He was purposely set up for failure.

      The first thing Silva would have done was to take a big step back while Bond did so. The second thing he would have done is shot her out of spite.

      @@theo-jamesmoulton2000 but he shot her anyway. So you might as well take the risk. This scene makes no sense, no legitimate operator would act this way

      I had the same reaction. If he could just deal with them whilst the guard pointed a gun at his head why wait so long and let the girl die ffs. He could have shot, missed her and use noise of the moment to attack or something. Wtf Bond.

      @ro co Nobody can hit a shot glass at that range with those pistols. A bench vise couldn't do it in 20 tries. The whole thing was a power play from the start.
