Lineker is an absolute legend. never booked. a fantastic striker, no star allures like ronaldo's and stuff, just a natural hard worker with fantastic skills. Now a great commentator with great humour and competence. just a great person and player.
@@methsnmilk I wish there is a store where to buy that luck, but no, this not luck, he was blessed with good instincts and he knows where to put that ball where keeper can't reach it. Some of these things come naturally to you. Those days England have good players to support him and he always receives good ball supplies from the midfielders. Not this days the English Nationa team is done due to influx of foreign players in the Premier League. The under 23 is doing very well but not the senior team
I worked at evertons ground selling programs the season he played for them,so I was at every game and what a privilege it was to see him play,he was lethal the best striker I have ever seen it was just a pity everton never won the league to go with his golden boot at club level, and then to get another golden boot award at the word cup,he's the best goal scorer I have ever seen by a mile, that's what the game lacks now players like him he was amazing
It's so odd for me (due to my age) to see Lineker doing anything other than being on the BBC presenting or selling crisps. But I can see now that he deserves to be known as a footballer first and foremost. 10 goals for England in world cup finals, more than any other from England players, apparantly.
You got a fact wrong there mate. He scored 10 goals in world cup finals. 6 in 1986 and 4 in 1990 Lineker was my favourite striker. Nothing ever flashy but he would appear out of nowhere to tap in a goal. Brilliant!
Being a relative of Gary's and living in NZ we don't see much about football here. It is a great video and nice to see all of Gary's goals in one hit. Thanks
Great video.I remember his goal v poland in 1991 vividly as it sent england to the euros at the expense of ireland. As an irishman i wasn't too happy but i have to admit lineker was lethal when presented with a decent chance and anyone who thinks he wasn't a great striker knows nothing about football
He’s turned into a bit of a Pratt but I loved him growing up. Also how good were those passes by hoddle and Beardsley. And the Barnes cross against Argentina 👌🏻
Lineker was a fantastic striker. He must be one of the best box-position players ever - he could predict where the ball was going to be in an almost uncanny fashion. Not only that but he was quick, strong on the ball, could spin away from defenders in a flash, had a great first touch, could finish with either foot and was great in the air. Many times England played a mediocre game and Lineker would put away a half chance to nick a draw or a win. Watch his club goals as well to appreciate his all round game.
But he wasn't skillful. Box position basically = goal hanger. But he was very good at what he did. If you like that type of player (Lineker, Inzaghi, Muller) more than your Romarios, Ronaldos, Shearers, Owens then it says alot about your mindstate. Are you English ?
FukcKKKBNP Not skillfull in a sense of 'dribbling' but he would beat players with his positional sense and his pace. Lineker was also very quick (and strong) and could find space in-between defenders; which on it's own is a 'skill'. For the record I was big fan of Romario, Owen and Ronaldo (plus many more that you don't mention) and Glenn Hoddle is my favourite player of all time. But I just feel that Lineker was unfairly labelled as a 'goal hanger'. If he was just that he wouldn't have played for Barcelona and he wouldn't have scored 48 International goals in 80 caps. He would put away a half chance regularly and was more reliable than other more 'flashy' strikers.
+FukcKKKBNP Why are you insulting someone based on the style of football they enjoy, especially as you have referenced some legends of the game. Football is and always will be about goals. If a players style proves and ineffective, how can you slate it? You can put a fast paced skillfull striker in for Muller,Inzaghi or Lineker and they are not going to score as many goals. So you tell me, is goalscoring not an art in itself? Positional awareness and timing are two of the greatest assets a striker can have. This is very, very simple. Your comment says a lot about your mindset. Your ego must be such a weight to carry.
FukcKKKBNP I see. Awch well, cool that red face, it was not too bad a pasting you took. It was obvious what you were attempting. Just you keep shaking your head little boy.
My favourite striker of all time. I watched every game possible when he was in any team. Best England striker ever IMO. Oh how we could do with someone like him now... Thanks for sharing this great video.
England would never get another Lineker or Michael Owen until the EPL reduced the number of foreign players in the league or put a quota limit the number of foreign players a team can fill in per game to allow local talent to have a chance to play and grow at the top-level. When did England have a Lineker, a Michael own or Paul Gascoigne? When there were fewer foreign owners, players and coaches in the English league. Look at the EPL now, I rest my case.
@ Michael Everest - Never Again, Your league is full of foreign players, the league does not give local talent to grow. It's a league that gives foreign talents to excel and go back home and represent their countries and kick England up the Ass.
The thing about Gary Lineker is, you never actually see him dribbles past someone but he always scores, like he always knows where the ball is going to be and where to put that ball where the keeper can't rich it. He knows how to beat that off-side trap any day.
Gary Lineker is himself, very self-deprecating of his own abilities. The hardest thing to do in football is scoring goals; Gary Lineker scored for fun. Forty yards out or two yards out, they all count the same. A true legend.
I recall these highlights on the BBC at half-time between Holland v Denmark in the Euro Semi final in 1992. That England could have played in if Taylor hadn’t subbed Links against Sweden (who am I kidding- we were crap in 92)
Lineker reminds me so much of Inzaghi. Both clinical finishers and possess great awareness and anticipation of what's going on around them. The comparison of Rooney and Lineker in ridiculous because Rooney is not and never will be a striker. He does not have the instincts of a striker and often drops deep in frustration. Lineker was always looking to break the opposition back line and he was a real goal poacher and a truly great striker. Rooney is a let down and had one lucky season at United.
I think Lineker was better than Wayne Rooney, at international level (especially at major tournaments). Rooney has so far appeared in three world cup tournaments and only scored one goal. Lineker, on the other hand, appeared in two world cup tournaments (1986 and 1990) and scored a combined total of ten goals. As a matter of fact, Lineker played while he was sick at the 1990 world cup and still managed to score 4 goals. There are just some players that are excellent at club level, but average at international level (Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, and Steven Gerrard). Others are consistent at both club and international level (Gary Lineker, Kevin Keegan).
I've almost never seen footages of Lineker, but I've just seen he won a Fair-play award, not because he never took red cards during world cups, but ... Because he didn't take ANY red or YELLOW in 15 YEARS of career ! That's why he started to interest me ^^
48 International goals in an era before the likes of Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union collapsed in to many smaller nations most of whom, with the notable exception of Croatia are cannon fodder.
That’s exactly Right , those teams were very strong aswell as you could see with the clubs they produced like Red Star Belgrade, Dynamo Kiev , Hajduk Split , Dinamo Tibilsi , the international game was of a much Higher standard back then, far more difficult to qualify for tournaments......
Lineker could always rustle a goal from the disorganized melee. You always knew you could rely on him to save the day. We could do with another of his caliber today.
my all time team: Schmeichel, Cafu,Beckenbauer,Moore,Maldini,Keane, B Charlton,Best, G Muller,Cruyff,Giggs with Brian Clough as manager that would be a great team.

Yeah Gary Lineker would get his head in there sod the flying boots - what a finish vs Germany - the Man scored against All the Top Country's - if he got at the Michael Mouse lot he would have Doubled his tally .
I had to watch this video of him to see what the fuss was about after seeing him in a nostalgic game for Spurs in 1991 where he was absolutely woeful, technically. Lineker has never denied that technical football was the weak part to his game. In fact technically, i am a better player than Lineker was. What Gary had though was a keen eye for space and the goal and for a striker, that is arguably more important than technique.
I'm from mexico, lineker failed in world cup 86 when played with argentina, because of mexico is more than 2 km up of shores, and maradona helped himself with drugs
@deckham Soon it will be Rooney and Connor Wickham, Wickham also has one of the longest throws iv'e ever seen, and he's only 17. Lineker was absolutly lethal, My idol growing up also a great role model.
@Lollertron In my opinion he's the best english center striker of modern football because he did exactly what a 9 has to do to score (unless your name is Ronaldo Luis Nazario and then you can do anything you want).
Rooney had just come back from a lengthy metarsal injury in 2006, and in 2010 was rushed back from an ankle injury for United so wasn't 100% in 2010, lay off Rooney, when he's had a prepration free from trouble before a major tournament like in 2004 he did the business
What's your excuse now? Rooney has been shit in every single tournament he went with England to play in, bar the very first one: The only one he had any genuine enthusiasm for.
@clay70 Just the other day my brother and this friend of mine were talking about how Bossy was rather like the Lineker for the Islanders dynasty. I take it that you must be an (ice) hockey fan as well as a football fan, mate?
This is all reversible too, A lot of other countries don't stand for it and if we had a manager with balls he'd drop the divas and pick players who want it. It may set us back 10 years technically but the team ethic would be back and maybe some of the divas would reign themselves in so the can play on the big stages. Will never happen though.
He certainly knew where the goals were. No second thoughts, never taking an extra touch, he just pulled the trigger and netted the ball.

Has to be said - Gary was given some lovely crosses during his time with England.

It's been a long time since you asked but yes, it's true. He was never booked.
the guy is literally scoring goals as if it was his club
I've always compared these two, of the current players I'd say Cardozo of Benfica is in a similar mold
The reason why he got these in is because of the England positioning actually trying to score goals but now days they don't care or bother
He always seems to come out of fucking nowhere xD
Imagina um ataque com Lineker e van Basten! seria o melhor!!
the perfect Centre Forward... That is all.
