  • Temporada 85-86.
Gary Lineker. Goals and skills in Everton. Season 1985-1986.
After winning the Golden Boot at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, Lineker was signed by Barcelona.

GARY LINEKER WAS A GOAL MACHINE.
For me, Gary Lineker was the best striker of the England national team history.

Agree scoring in a World Cup knockout match is world class , scoring back to back in 2 worldcup knockout matches sensational ; scoring back to back in the World Cup knockout stages in 2 World Cup (1986 round of 16 ,2 against Paraguay , quarter final 1 against Argentina ; 1990 quarter final 2 against Cameron , semi final 1 against West Germany )is the greatest ... can’t name any of the great names have achieved this in the last 3,4 World Cup .

When I was little in the late 80s Lineker was our star man, the biggest name. Not as skilful as someone like Barnes, but a goal machine who kept reliably scoring and so our biggest name (at least from a child's perspective). I rented a video from the library of the '86 FA Cup final (his goal in that final features towards the end of this upload) a couple of years later, really enjoyed watching it. I was too young to have remembered actually watching the '86 world cup (I probably didn't watch it, although I knew Maradona was the Argentine genius who cheated us), but I was becoming a bit more interested in football in the late 80s. I also loaned a book purportedly by Lineker himself, a simple book of tactics and advice for budding young footballers. The one key bit of advice I remember was that a change of pace could make all the difference when creating space or taking it past an opponent, and I wondered at the time if he was particularly thinking of Maradona when he wrote that!

I remember 1986 well, the year the best team in Europe won NOTHING. Two great strikers played in Merseyside and they were wanted by some of the richest clubs in the world. Rush was approached and agreed to leave, but not until Liverpool could fully integrate his replacement (he stayed giving a years notice). Lineker agreed to leave and dropped Everton like a brick. Thanks Gary, never mind eh, we won the league the year before he came and again the year after he left. He sums up the modern footballers view on loyalty.

It seems Howard clearly wanted sell him. Lineker stated even in the last few weeks on those MOTD podcasts he was happy at Everton and had no plans to leave until the club accepted a bid from Barcelona. My problem was he was a world class goalscorer who'd just won the World Cup golden boot yet we sold him on the cheap to one of the richest clubs in the world. There's plenty of rumours that surround the transfer that if true don't reflect well on certain people at the club at the time. We also should've put a clause in the deal were we got first refusal if/when Barca wanted to sell. It sums us up in the late 80s that we paid the same fee for Mike Newell that Spurs paid for Lineker the same summer.

He would have won the European Cup and the Ballon dOr if the Heysel disaster didn't happen.

cant blame gary for coming short in 86 thats a myth spread by howard kendall to cover his own ass who figured the barca job was his. garys goals put everton in contention again they only ended four points off previous season and won league with same points tally year later.
probably would have surpassed 85 if southall never got injured
