Welcome back, Creatures! Today, in the spirit of Halloween, I have for you a Creature Feature with one of my favorite animals to work with, the Indian Fruit Bat, or 'Flying Fox'.
*Disclaimer*
This bat is a captive bred bat. He wasn't poached ,smughled, or taken from the wild. That said, I don't endorse bats as pets (he's not a pet) and it's extremely important NOT to handle any wild bats you may encounter, as they can carry rabies in many countries.
If you find an injured bat, the best thing to do is call your local animal rehab center, where they can instruct you on how best to proceed with rescue, in line with your state and national laws.

I have a love-hate relationship with bats. I have a longan tree in my backyard and the wild bats will eat them if we didn't wrap the bunch of fruits in a mesh or some kind of plastic. Bats are really cute though.
People seriously think bats sit right side up to the point they harassed you for him being upsidedown? You learn in elementary school that bats hang upside down. How ignorant do you have to be...?

I live in India and there's a tree in my backyard that fruits every year and in that time 50-60 fruit bats come there and feast all night. The screams and sounds that they make all night really makes it a challenge to go to sleep lol

Do...do people seriously think bats aren't supposed to be upside down? Like I understand some people have never seen a bat in person before but I feel like it's just common knowledge that they spend most of their time upside down. The fact you had to pull your photo down is kinda sad.
Actually, hanging upside down is the bat's way of resting and they don't use up a lot of energy that way. ^^
There are adults that think chicken nuggets are made in a chemistry lab, eggs too! If you take them to a farm, they loose their marbles! Sad, but unfortunately true!
I was really surprised when I learned people didn't know that too, like wtf its like the first thing I learned about bat even before I knew what it was.
Fr I was surprised about that too... but then I had a friend who thought that there are no male/female mammals (she assumed they're all the same gender) plus she assume they lay eggs.

I thought they were going to be upset about fruit bats carrying ebola, as they do. The upside down issue is a non-issue for the bats! They probably wonder why we are always upside down!

Right?! Like all the dogs that are forced to wear very comfortable clothes like boots or hats. People think they look cute in them but the truth is they are awfully uncomfortable for them to wear.
I know there some coats that cover their torso well designed that don't bother them, but the boots and the hats are a no-go.
Yes, sad that people don't do homework on animals! Our local large cat "sanctuary" is full of lions, tigers, jaguars, and more for that very reason!
Fruit bats carry serious zoonotic diseases, amongst them H1N1 (Spanish flu aka Swine flu... the one that killed millions of people in the early 1900s), rabies and ebola... the last one, the Zaire strain, is 91% fatal to anyone who catches it.
Absolutely do some homework on these guys if you think about having one as a pet... in most countries, having one without a permit is illegal, and for very good reasons.

Fruit bats are beautiful, but carry, amongst other things, Spanish flu, rabies and ebola... all can & do kill humans. They carry other nasties too.
Not good pets!!! Very hard to obtain, illegal without a permit in most places, and chances are, even if you got a bat, both of you would be quite unhappy because you can’t properly care for any wild animal without LOTS of money and resources. Perhaps a regular puppy instead? :-)
A sugar glider is a much better alternative, as long as you do all your research.

I like bats, their cool and I like to watch them fly around my house at night.
I love bats. They are so cute. We have a lot of little bats where I live and you can watch them right at dusk flying through the air. I’m not sure if they’re hunting insects or not haha. Sometimes they will get in our garage and hang on our concrete wall. They will mostly leave by themselves if we leave the door open, but sometime my dad will carefully get them and move them outside. We also have bat houses up for them to sleep in!

I've always loved bats, especially the little ones that come out on summer nights to feed on nasty mosquitoes. But you're absolutely right about the rabies. A lot of people don't know that bats can have rabies without showing symptoms. So even if they don't look sick, they can still infect someone.
There is no upper limit to the amount of videos with bats eating fruit one can watch before growing tired of it.

Actually, there _is_ a time when bats will hang right-side up. When a bat needs to go to the bathroom, they turn themselves around, hang by their thumb claws, and go poo so that it drops to the ground, rather than splatter all over their coats~ That's basically the only time, though. Any other time, they're climbing to a more comfortable perch or to some food, and then they hang by their feet again.

I learned that our eyelids are very similar to a bat wing’s membranes. Since learning that, every time I rub my eyes, I think of bat wings! So soft and supple.
