My teenage boys take a break from their study to watch you each week. You have become part of our routine. Your sharing, of the beauty of your home has inspired and enriched our lives. Thank you Martijn. God's richest blessings mate.
Sometimes chickens become egg bound and get a bit wobbly legged, this can lead to death. - if this happens give them a teaspoon of olive oil administered directly down their beak. We kept a lot of chickens and this is some of the best advice We received.
But better not to pour anything down a chicken’s beak but try to tempt them to eat themselves. This is due to the particular anatomy of a chickens upper digestive tract.

Martijn is blessed, as are those who find themselves wholly immersed and moved by this Elysian getaway lifestyle and all its teachings. The chapters gift humanity by transcending chaotic worldliness, offering immense solace on the rest day.
The way the chickens gather around you demonstrates clearly that they are happy birds. Most certainly, the one you lost had a good life. As someone who grew up on a farm, the only thing that I can matter of factly say is - that's farming. I say it without any scorn, judgement or aloofness. It's hard. One becomes very attached to animals, but there will always be this continuous cycle of life and death. One is rewarding, the other hurts. On a more positive note, the grass outside of the cabin is growing well and externally, it really is beginning to look like a home. The pointing on the inside is quickly having a similar effect on the inside and it won't be long before the cabin really starts to feel like a home.
Hi Martijn! Do not leave so much food available to the chickens because it inevitably attracts rats. It is best to give the right amount of food daily because if the rats discover the supplies then it will be a tough fight to get them out of the coop. 👋
hi Martijn I was wondering if you add a small amount of apple cider to the water also red pepper flakes these are good for Diseases and overall health and the pepper flake is not hot for the chickens
My wife and I are from Minnesota, where your stove and Red Wing boots are made. We love your episodes! We love the Alps and your place is special! I am 60 years old but can dig and work for hours. I’d love to help you with your landscape walls next summer. Or take care of your chickens next time you go on holiday.
Hi Martijn, it's such a privilege to follow you on your journeys. I also went away for a week and couldn't seem to get back into my projects (albeit much more modest - I'm 77) but I realise since watching your latest video, I was missing my weekly dose of inspiration. One caution, any dust that contains sand, as when you're brushing down the grout, exposes you to the risk of silicosis (a nasty chronic lung disease)if you're breathing it in over time - I'd suggest a mask would be a good idea.
I agree. An old schoolfriend was working in that area for people who suffer from it. Id be buying a mask and also something yo cover your eyes when tipping the cement or whatever into the bucket and grinding the excess off the stone. Its better to be safe now than sorry later. No turning back with that...
@user-uq6gl5nw7b Great advise on the lung protection. It’s so important to protect them from the many things Martijn gets into. Many have mentioned it. I’ve seen him pull his head away from the fine dust when pouring the dry product, but he needs to use a good quality mask. His lungs are quite possibly being damaged. All the others in your comment are so right as well. His eyes need protecting as well. We can hope that Martijn will choose to protect his organs, we all have our one body. 💚 from Texas
I’m sorry that your little hen passed away. The masonry stove design is pure genius. As always, thank you for sharing some of your life with us. You make my life better.
This may have been your best video so far. So much heart. There was rest, and sun tans, and progress, the cabin walls look great, the grass looks great. Family (chicken) was missed, bell peppers achieved. A great balance of the things of life. Beautiful music and videography. Thank you again Martijn for allowing us some of your mountain journey.
Please, Martijn, wear a mask when creating dust from the walls. We all want you around for a long time... and healthy. Lungs are very precious. Your videos are amazingly beautiful.
Beautiful music and picturesque video of your holiday by the sea. You are a true artist Martijn. Your chicken had a good life. I am sorry for your loss.
I love how some green grass around the first cabin transforms it from a building site into a finished natural setting. And it's amazing that summer is more than half gone. Not long ago you were battling deep snow!
Hope you had a nice break Martijn. I would suggest treating the wall with distilled white vinegar to kill the current mold. It will also help with neutralizing the smell you mentioned that has built up in the cabin while keeping it all natural. Tnx and great work!😊
You might try using a dehumidifier, works fast and removes moisture quickly. Just a thought. We have to use them in Ga all summer, you won’t believe how much moisture they absorb in a day, it’s massive.
I’m in Ohio USA. I enjoy your videos immensely. The view you see every day is heaven ! I’m happy that you are taking time off away from the ‘estate’. You work soo hard. I love the chickens, and sorry about your loss.
Add me to the Ohio USA list. My condolences for the passing of the little grey girl. Nice of you to show her respect burying her. Her body rests on a majestic Alpine Mountain. But if you believe in reincarnation she’ll be back. I was happy when you added these sweet chickens to your daily living.
I am thinking about all the spirits evolved in the original building of this place, all these men and women who lived around. I am sure they are watching you with great consideration for the work you are doing.
So sorry about the gray chicken. Of course she had a good life! The shot from inside the coop when you were walking up the hill was precious! As soon as they noticed you walking up, they all ran to that side of the coop, so excited to see you! I was (literally) laughing out loud, imagining what they were thinking ... "Oh look! Here he comes! And he has something new for us! What could it be?" It didn't take them long to figure out it had food in it. :) So yes, she did have a good life, Martjin. As do you! I can hardly wait to see the masonry stove in action. It will keep your whole house warm this winter. (And the dormice, too.)
A big part of these video's (to me) is the chickens. I guess you just learn as time goes by how to care for them. Martijn loves his chicks too. I love it when He talks more...his words are so loving and kind...seems like he never gets discouraged. The new green grass is beautiful. I look forward to the Sunday's when we all can watch a new video.🥰💯👍🐔
I’m so sorry about Gray chicken. Yes, I hope she had a good life and I also hope that the other chickens remain healthy and adjust to Gray chick’s absence. RE: MOLD - You are smart to be vigilant and may want to research remedies. Mold is insidious and challenging. To discourage further growth, in addition to remedies (eg, bleach, cleaning products, essential oils, industrial products), you should consider setting up a space heater in the cabin so everything dries quickly and thoroughly. The pervasive dampness of the cabin due to shade, moisture in the ground, atmospheric humidity and the tendency of some rocks to retain moisture all complicate the situation. Furthermore, the “manure” smell you complain of is likely the many years of excrement and urine of the mice. Mice have no bladder control and communicate their whereabouts with urine trails. Their excrement is in the soil in the cabin and all around. This is quite unhealthy to inhale. Again, the interior will require an extremely thorough cleaning. You may even consider replacing the floor boards. I get this stuff because I’ve had to deal with it as well in a couple of homes. The mice scent will not go away without giving this issue close attention. It will not go away over time either. I know you won’t want to hear this, but if I were you I’d replace the floor boards as after all these years they must be saturated with mice dung and pee, and I’d point the outside of the cabin, which, in fact, is more important than pointing the inside for keeping them out. I’d also set up traps and get a couple of cats. You just can’t underestimate the damage they do.
So grateful for this comment about the mold and hope he heeds it. Martijn, if you're not familiar with medicinal plants, your botanical friend will know what teas you can drink for the mold and mouse waste exposures to keep your lungs and immune system healthy Addressing mold with bleach or H202 or even sprayed grapefruit seed extract won't permanently eliminate it. It will form spores until the environment is friendly for it again, then grow. Consider a routine dispersal of soil probiotics in the air. Harmless to us, mold eaters, and an ecological solution. All of us should do this because any structure with plumbing is susceptible to damp and leaks, even in dry climates, but especially when there is known mold anywhere.
Maybe the use of an air purifier while this situation is not resolved would be also good. If the smell is so pervasive, perhaps a mask will not solve all the problems? But of course there is the problem of spending electric energy with the air purifier. Still, it may be a good investment.
Martijn your videos are a haven of peace in a busy World. Watching them stuck here in a big city is like meditation. A reminder of a peaceful green place, a sane place. Thank you!
Hey! A good option for pointing the exterior would be to tint the mortar really dark brown, getting close to black. Dark filler usually looks good in my opinion. The eye expects to see darkness between cracks and it allows the material to stand out and look more traditional like you mentioned. You could keep its plane deeper in the rock too, so it really looks unpointed from any distance. You could do a test patch anyway. Love the videos. Thank you.
The opening sequence was stupendous. So beautiful and awe-inspiring. So sorry about your chicken. When I saw the chapter heading "sad news" it was a gut punch. We all love your chickens.
Lovely transition from the sea to your forest; boats to cabins… sorry about “la Grigia( the grey one)”. Do the other hens miss her I wonder???. Good to have you back. X
I'm from Ukraine. Разом з вами я знаходжу душевний спокій під завивання сирен повітряної тривоги. Ваші відео це острівці хай тимчасової, але втечі від війни і надія, що щасливе життя існує. Дякую. 💙💛
Sending love and prayers of peace to you all. ❤ Another RUclipsr you might enjoy is Jonna Jinton, she too is an artist and master video maker. Blessings 🙌 from Ireland ❤
I’m sorry for losing the grey chicken…they now know you, they follow you and when you walk toward the coop they run to you…and no doubt, yes, you do take good care of them…oh btw, Portofino was beautiful…thank you for including a glimpse of your mini vacation 🙏
What an idyllic break. Two totally natural blessed places shared by you in one video. Made me realise that you are modern master of creating your own sense of place with a global consciousness.
Yay! I’ve been waiting for the beautiful stone walls to be filled with mortar, it’s going to look amazing. I often think it’s like Game of thrones “Winter is coming “ with all the preparations and battening down the hatches ready for the cold weather. You needed a break and it was well deserved. Sorry to see you lost one of your chickens. I look forward to the next video and what you’ve been doing in your beautiful green valley🦋
I do love Sunday mornings! A gentle wake up with coffee, breakfast and Martijn. So sad about your chicken Martijn, what a wonderful life she had with you though ❤️❤️
Opening scenes: heavenly. The walls are WoW! I love to watch Martjin as he’s a good master to copy in his approach to task: slow steady present and focused. I then go about my day emulating him on my modest piece of sylvan paradise. Lovely to see Portofino again. Thank you so much for your offering Martijin.
Hello again from small town Texas. I am so sorry for the passing of your little Grey chicken. Losing an animal you raise and take care of is difficult. I love the progress you made on the cabin and your grass is really growing fast. Missed you last week but I'm glad you were taking time for yourself. God bless ❤
You look tanned and relaxed Martijn. Good to have you back. Some people will say it's only a chicken but they do nest in your heart, so sad. When/if egg bound a warm bath with Epsoms greatly helps. Sterkte en voorspoed op jou Italiaanse pad!
I’m so sorry about your lovely chicken. 😢 Each chicken has its own personality so you so miss her. Just remember you gave her a very happy life in a beautiful location foraging in the sunshine. Much better than the vast majority of chickens. Thank you 🙏
I've done pointing on similar walls and have found that using rubber gloves (that are continuously dipped in water) does a great job of pushing the mortar into the cracks and giving a smooth finish and you end up with less mess to clean up.
I was thinking exactly the same but when he explained that the middle part of the wall was dirt an small rocks and he not only wants to point the wall but also fill as many holes deeper inside i get why he is doing the way he is doing it now. He probably got advise from local builders. Maybe it is actualy a two mans job, one man using the machine and another directly pointing afterwards with what you mentioned rubber gloves. And about the mold somebody mentioned vinegar which i think is a good solution or because he is spraying, i think, water before starting pointing a water solution with vinigar is the best and probably safest way to deal with the mold.
missed your presence in my log home last week.......so sorry you lost a family member (the chicken)......burying her was the right way to pay homage and make her a permanent part of your (and her) home.
your vision from your computer sketch ups are really coming to life with the grass coming in, also sorry about chicken. Keep up the wonderful work and glad to have you back!
Aww😢 sorry about the chickie, its always sad to lose them.usually its nothing that can be helped, or by the time they show they are ill its too late. She had a beautiful life. I love watching them run around you, and talk to you. sweet little buddies. congrats on the eggs too.
Looks like a lovely holiday for you, well deserved. RIP little grey chicken, had a wonderfu life, Martijn, no doubt. We knew you'd be away but you were missed here. Welcome back!
Hey Marjin . We have just had a devastating fire here in Kelowna,B.C. Please ensure your home is protected by cutting back some growth around your cabins. Much ❤
That's the beauty of stone walls stone roof will survive many fires. As opposed to US and Canada where houses are built with laminated cardboard and pine. Like a tinder box. We are at the end of the season for fires here in Italy. The rains have started signaling autumn is on its way.
I rarely look back but your chickens brought back many sweet memories.. some of my hens died and I never knew why … they used to follow me and when I sat in the yard to just be still and watch them they would jump in my lap and snuggle in ..the biggest treat was hawks .. and a neighbors dog 🙁neighbors finally kept their dog in their yard after I talked to them upon seeing their dog carry off my chicken.. !!! Love your videos .. thank you for sharing
Hello Martin,I truly enjoy watching you every Sunday, such a treat. You are such a patient man with your labor of love. You are blessed to have the opportunity to live life this way. I am from Florida and would love to live in Italy. Thank you for sharing your life with us ❤
Your chicken enjoyed a first class life. Some of us do tend to become attached to them, and sadly, we will inevitably lose them. Knowing that we strived to give them the happiest life they could have does help. If you replace, I’d do two birds.
Sorry about your loss, I may not know how to take care of chickens but I know how it feels to lose a pet, but on a brighter side, the entire place is getting beautiful every week, its slowly turning into a relaxing place like home. Thanks for taking us with you to that amazing vacation place.
Wow...that electric storm in the distance...how I would love to see that here!! We're having 60+ days of 100 degrees and above here in Texas. What a delightful holiday drive...the views from your windows...the grass sprouting up...all those eggs! Sorry about Graybird...I love your chickens....I particularly enjoy the "learning curve" of all those machines you use...that shed looks like mine!!(the 'before'!)....glad you had a helper. God bless you.
Hi, Martjen! I missed you last week but agree you needed a holiday. Your videos are so tranquil and beautiful. They are an hour of peace in my week. In fact, I rewatch them when I feel overwhelmed and they help me find my center again. Thank you for making them. Sorry about Miss Gray Chicken.
The roof is wonderful. A lot of hard work. You are a master carpenter. You are very particular and fussy about your work. You are a wonderful artist and, apparently, a really nice guy. I can’t wait to watch your next video. Thank you for the enjoyment watching these give me.
Estaba esperando tus videos como la tierra reseca espera la lluvia....entonces llega la paz....la armonía. . .viene el silencio lleno de significados. . .qué más decir! Love your content week after week Martijn. The photography and attention to detail is top notch and so happy for you that you are allowing us all to watch your dream come together. Cheers from las Vegas sir!
Hello from Thailand, your video was like taking me to one of those best documentaries, there is a captivating and beautiful journey! Always look forward to watching every time.
Everything is coming along. Just lovely. I am sorry to hear about your chicken. I know how we love our animals. She had a good little life while she was here.
Hi Martijn, we love Italy and stumbled across your channel a year or so ago... I have become an avid viewer in the very southern US state of Louisiana! Love watching your progress on your wonderful property and always amazed at how calm you remain, even with unexpected challenges! Instead of listening to high energy workout music during my at-home workouts, I watch an episode of your channel. Have made it to #80! So sorry about your gray chicken! (A side note: it does drive me crazy to watch you work with all that mortar dust without a protective mask on.) Thank you for sharing your story and best of wishes to you for the upcoming year! Will be watching!!
I've been watching the early videos. I am up to #17. It's wonderful to see things I didn't notice the first time. Seeing today's video a little bit early is a lovely treat.
We were in Paesana, not far from you last week, starting renovations to our mountain house and we enjoyed watching the storms too. I have missed a few of your latest vids due to our own project but will catch up soon. We found your channel by chance and luckily at the beginning of your mountain journey. It gave us the inspiration to look at this area in Italy and we bought our mountain house becauseof it. Hopefully our paths will cross one of these days. Much appreciate your journey and how it has given us the beginning of ours.
thank you martijn great video oh that scenery of Portofino beautiful made me wish i can throw myself in the ocean too really beautiful and so proud of your accomplishment looking good ciao alla prossima !!!
Once again - thanks for the amazing production values and bucolic scenery while sharing your journey. Its my favourite hour of the week, 81 weeks running.
I'm sorry you lost your grey chicken; I know how easy it is to get attached and lose one. On a more positive note, things are really shaping up there, the grass is growing nicely and the pointing looks awesome. You are creating something which will outlast us all, a great legacy. Glad to see you back after your short holiday and thank you for another great video.
Thanks for blessing us with your videos! It is so ironic that, as viewers, we enjoy and relax as you work! I feel I am living vicariously on your mountain homestead, enthralled by the awesome views of your surrounding landscape. Thank you again! I look forward to your next installment!
Love your content. It was great to see the pointing work. It really makes it feel like things are coming together into a real home now. Thanks, as always, for sharing. Much appreciated.
....maybe a piece of plastic Saran wrap on top of the mortar when it's in the hopper will slow the drying for you? The walls look amazing......and I think they look better with the mortar. Great job! You must be a very empathic person........any death is painful......may you find peace.
you might want to try a high tunnel for growing veggies....can be very cheap to build and allow for growing things like peppers also, might want to plant some fruit or nut trees now....will take a while to mature....better to start asap
I was very curious about the trees his father planted for him when his father and brothers were out. I wanted to know what kind and how they were doing. I love my trees. I am on my third food forest and this year there has been too much food to eat. It is a feeling of independence and luxury that is hard to describe in words.
My teenage boys take a break from their study to watch you each week. You have become part of our routine. Your sharing, of the beauty of your home has inspired and enriched our lives. Thank you Martijn. God's richest blessings mate.
Yah its like being there while sittin' on the Couch😮🤔
Walls look good. Cleaning up is the worst part of construction. Nice work!

I've just seen a video where the chicken was gently held in a bath if warm water as she was egg bound 👍🏻
Or even better, don't steal their eggs, as that stresses them to produce more eggs.

Well said friend
Thats fungi in the walls
Lol, I think it's quite possible you need some more hobbies....
What???

He built the feeder so they could eat while he was on holiday, he said: "4 days worth of food".
An ‘outside’ cat is always a good investment if you’re keeping animals or birds in the countryside.

Spoken like a true Minnesotan ❤. I live in the TC but visit Redwing regularly and was similarly excited by the connection. Skol.
I was definitely imagining a dry stack stone retaining wall where the new grass is seeded... then maybe a bench ... :)

PUT ON MASK!!!
Breathing in the mould spores is a serious risk too. Not sure Martijn sees these comments tho.

If you love your chicken you go to the doctor and not brush over it, you are idolizing him
Is anyone else astounded at how much wear that skinny grey brush has endured that Martijn uses on the walls? It is the MVP!

Having read all of this comment, I think wearing a mask while working is a good idea too!!
So grateful for this comment about the mold and hope he heeds it. Martijn, if you're not familiar with medicinal plants, your botanical friend will know what teas you can drink for the mold and mouse waste exposures to keep your lungs and immune system healthy
Addressing mold with bleach or H202 or even sprayed grapefruit seed extract won't permanently eliminate it.
Didn't he mention taking the floor out at 5:25?
Very complete comments. Hope Martijn will listen to all your suggestions specifically replacing the entire floors to help eliminate the bad odors.
Martijn your videos are a haven of peace in a busy World. Watching them stuck here in a big city is like meditation. A reminder of a peaceful green place, a sane place.
Thank you!
Those walls are a real labour of love. They will be beautiful. 😊💚
Thank you.
It's good to have you back Martjin...
The opening sequence was stupendous. So beautiful and awe-inspiring. So sorry about your chicken. When I saw the chapter heading "sad news" it was a gut punch. We all love your chickens.
Hope you're a vegetarian otherwise it's a pretty hypocritical message.
Wow what amazing opening shots - it's like a big budget movie. Thank you
Yes. Agree
Lovely transition from the sea to your forest; boats to cabins… sorry about “la Grigia( the grey one)”. Do the other hens miss her I wonder???. Good to have you back. X
I'm from Ukraine.

Stay strong

Sending love and prayers of peace to you all. ❤ Another RUclipsr you might enjoy is Jonna Jinton, she too is an artist and master video maker. Blessings 🙌 from Ireland ❤
8:33 Brown Hen tells the other ladies "He brings things!" That's their sound for you. It's a good sound. They were all excited ☺
Absolutely fantastic as usual, sorry to hear about the chicken, all my respect from the United Kingdom 🙏
Your videos always start out so beautpaul the sky is lit up
Another good relaxing dose of Martin blog ❤❤❤
I feel the sadness for the loss of a pet, but also all the joy for all the wonderful things you have made happen in... making this HOUSE YOUR HOME
God bless ❤
He didn't raise the chicken and he didn't take care, he just watched it dying.
Martijn For your health you should wear a mask when mixing cement.
You look tanned and relaxed Martijn. Good to have you back. Some people will say it's only a chicken but they do nest in your heart, so sad. When/if egg bound a warm bath with Epsoms greatly helps. Sterkte en voorspoed op jou Italiaanse pad!
Our Europe is beautiful..I am proud to be European 🇮🇹🇩🇪🇧🇪🇫🇷🇪🇸🇳🇱
I’m so sorry about your lovely chicken. 😢 Each chicken has its own personality so you so miss her. Just remember you gave her a very happy life in a beautiful location foraging in the sunshine. Much better than the vast majority of chickens. Thank you 🙏
Don't quit what you are doing there. We want to watch this go on forever. 😊
I've done pointing on similar walls and have found that using rubber gloves (that are continuously dipped in water) does a great job of pushing the mortar into the cracks and giving a smooth finish and you end up with less mess to clean up.
Hey - that's actually a GOOD tip!
....unlike most of the nonsense advice you hear on RUclips.......!!!
Love the chicken cam! Keep up the good work. It makes my Sunday mornings.
Looks like a lovely holiday for you, well deserved. RIP little grey chicken, had a wonderfu life, Martijn, no doubt. We knew you'd be away but you were missed here. Welcome back!
Finally back, we are all in abstinence! Greetings from Hamburg ❤

May God bless the chicken that passed away! And May God bless you and your project, Martijn!
😊 MI
I rarely look back but your chickens brought back many sweet memories.. some of my hens died and I never knew why … they used to follow me and when I sat in the yard to just be still and watch them they would jump in my lap and snuggle in ..the biggest treat was hawks .. and a neighbors dog 🙁neighbors finally kept their dog in their yard after I talked to them upon seeing their dog carry off my chicken.. !!! Love your videos .. thank you for sharing
The pointing looks excellent!
Hello Martin,I truly enjoy watching you every Sunday, such a treat. You are such a patient man with your labor of love. You are blessed to have the opportunity to live life this way. I am from Florida and would love to live in Italy. Thank you for sharing your life with us ❤
This lady is watching you from Florida. And I love what you are doing! Sending you Love and best wishes. ❤
I am sure I would give each chicken its own name, but understand if you do not.
The roof is wonderful. A lot of hard work. You are a master carpenter. You are very particular and fussy about your work. You are a wonderful artist and, apparently, a really nice guy. I can’t wait to watch your next video. Thank you for the enjoyment watching these give me.
Estaba esperando tus videos como la tierra reseca espera la lluvia....entonces llega la paz....la

While many in this world are destroying....so wonderful to see someone who enjoys restoring, creating, loving peace, humbling walking the Earth.
Excellent Martijn. Beautiful Italy, my hearts desire.
Oh....it looks so beautiful now with the grass filling in now and your pointing is absoultly perfect.
I am watching this while we are on vacation in the Netherlands. Greetings!
Such a huge transformation from episode #1. It’s a joy to watch the progress.
Beautiful scenery. Find it relaxing watching these episodes on a sunday morning.
Congratulations. That's wonderful. Someone's journey aided yours. What a testament to the reach of YT.
Better than most TV channels in most countries.
Thanks for filming your incredible journey on our planet earth.
I'm glad we see the workshop again!
Can not watch this with the uninterupted attention it deserves to the hard work you put into this because of all the ADVERTS !
I love that your vision is comming together beautiful! Thank you for bringing us on your endeavors. 😊
thank you martijn great video oh that scenery of Portofino beautiful made me wish i can throw myself in the ocean too really beautiful and so proud of your accomplishment looking good ciao alla prossima !!!
Once again - thanks for the amazing production values and bucolic scenery while sharing your journey. Its my favourite hour of the week, 81 weeks running.
I am so very sorry for the loss of your little grey hen! She did have a good life..
Great job! You must be a very empathic person........any death is painful......may you find peace.
you might want to try a high tunnel for growing veggies....can be very cheap to build and allow for growing things like peppers
also, might want to plant some fruit or nut trees now....will take a while to mature....better to start asap
I was very curious about the trees his father planted for him when his father and brothers were out. I wanted to know what kind and how they were doing. I love my trees. I am on my third food forest and this year there has been too much food to eat. It is a feeling of independence and luxury that is hard to describe in words.
the look towards the camera in reaction to the sounds from inside the wall is golden
