    I was fortunate enough to be at their first gig in Birmingham earlier this week and I loved every single second. I cheered, sang and cried. It was genuinely everything I hoped for and more. The ovation they received when they first walked on, after a 14 year absence, will live long in my memory. 15,000 of us stood and roared. Truly emotional. Nic was a revelation on the drums, the music was as powerful as ever, and Phil, whilst clearly with diminished vocal abilities, had added poignancy and vulnerability. For all their technical prowess, alongside the extraordinary lights and visuals, it was a show with an equally huge amount of heart. The somewhat disparate publications of Rolling Stone, The Telegraph and The Guardian all agree; the band go out all guns blazing. If you get the opportunity to see them then go. The chance won't come again.

      There is a video here on RUclips called "Gensis the final bow" - watch it, it is the saddest thing I have seen in Rock history and this from my favorite band. You can see the pain in Mike and Tony's face, especially Tony who then turns and walks away, the image given is three old sad men leaving the stage with their heads low. It killed me watching that. I never thought the end of Genesis would be like that.

      There is a sense in which ageing is sad, for we all know that we are going to die.
      To my mind, people are in a state of denial in believing the band are ever to record again. My sense is that Banks and Rutherford do not wish to revisit performing or recording with Gabriel again. Perhaps Gabriel might have an interest if Hackett were on board for a new Genesis project, and Banks and Rutherford were truly enthusiastic about recording and performing some gigs with him. Yet I doubt this shall ever come to pass. As regards Ray Wilson of _Calling All Stations_ (1997), Rutherford and Banks were not even willing to record a second album with Wilson, apparently because of diminished public interest. This truly is the end for the band. Banks and Rutherford seem to have wanted to all but forget every era of the band save the trio of '78 and onwards. The ship has sailed for Genesis reunions.
      Collins was so ambitious and vibrant in the '70s and '80s; essentially a workaholic. After _Testify_ (2002) and his _Brother Bear_ (2003) soundtrack with DIsney, his drive and creativity seem to have largely vanished. He retreated from the public eye, recording, and performing, and descended deep into addiction/substance abuse. This is almost certainly why he appears nearly a decade older than he actually is. I was rather shocked to have witnessed his deterioration in 2016 for his _Not Dead Yet_ press appearances. Collins appears much worse now (2022). I do not believe he is long for this world.

One thing i would've asked the guys, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway movie when? At least they made a new version of the title track, not very good but i bet that Peter Gabriel will be involved on it if its ever recorded on a studio, after all, is his composition and Tony's.

    One thing that happens is that “we” as fans of bands or athletes or people we hold in regard in our own youth live our lives and don’t see these people much over a 10, 20, 30, 40 year period then our focus comes back to them and they seemed to have aged so much in what seems overnight. Of course it isn’t overnight it was a long time ago that just has seemed to have passed by so quickly. It is hard and makes us reflect on our own aging and mortality. Genesis and the solo albums from all the members of Genesis including Gabriel played a fundamental part of our lives for those of us of a certain age. I am very happy when younger people discover older artists and then that triggers an exploration in them. It is tough to see Phil Collins in decline, but it happens to all of us over time, we all age and he is still doing it in the capacity he can. They don’t owe it to anyone and they all have plenty of money, so it is about love of music, each other, their fans, perhaps legacy. I actually appreciate how a singing voice can change over time and still be beautiful even if it is not as strong as in youth they become even better storytellers.

    We saw Phil in September 2019 when he came through Dallas. Great music as always and the band performed magically. I have always loved Phil Collins and have seen him many times. It was hard to watch. It just felt like a funeral in a way. Fortunately, his sense of humor is still intact. He claimed his neck operation for nerve damage affects his extremities making it difficult to walk and hold sticks. He used to poke fun at comebacks (the final farewell tour/not dead yet). But I really think he wants to do this till he actually stops ticking. Its his heart and soul. The problem is, he will never be able to outdo himself or get even close. He has left us with a lifetime of great music, therapy and things to think about. Genesis on the other hand have also been my favorite (rock?) band. Everyone on the stage has carried on pretty well and must also be out there because its their life as well. I only got to see them in Spring 1992 in Dallas. That introduced me to their back catalog which enhanced my appreciation of their musicianship. I love them but its hard to watch your heroes fade away. I thought Fading Lights was a good wrap up. Anything beyond that could have just been one offs. International touring in your 70's? I'm dizzy just thinking about it. Best of fortune to them all....'Living Forever'.

    I play drums and sing at the same time and the only reason I started doing that was because of seeing Phil Collins doing it with In the air tonight.With a minor exception he's a lefty and has a unique voice like no other.I love you Phil as I know I'm one of many millions who do. Once you climb that mountain and look from the top, then you slowly come down like your doing now. You'll always be in my heart

      I found out they got his son to replace him as a drummer. Probably the best solution in mind to fill his father's boots, probably also able to unmistakably mimic his antics behind the drumkit, thus not being as original and legendary but a great replacement none the less.
      I know it's not the same but that's life innit? People get old, they get injuries and issues with health. They also die, but as long as Phil Collins's still among us and he's even able to sing live we should be grateful.

    What breaks my heart is that Phil can never drum again!!😭😭😭 HOW do you stop doing what you've LOVED for 60 years?!?!? Yeah, he was doing 85% singing anyway, but to NOT be able to pick up sticks and do a drum solo, or jam with his son, or just bang about in frustration when he gets home from a bad day!?! 😖😤😭
    His reputation, legacy and records/videos will live forever!!! (As will the other Genesis musicians!🥰👏)
    Phil's NOT dead yet and I imagine he's got a lot of ideas, offers, and projects to keep him from getting bored!! All I hope is that he is able to get some good medical Marijuana and he'll be smiling that beautiful smile again!!
    Lots of love and best wishes, and many many thanks for brightning our lives!! 🥰👏 "Always"🥰👑Phil. Alllwaaays❣️🥰😘

    If Wind and Wuthering is Tony's favourite Genesis album, it's perhaps surprising they aren't playing a bit more of it in the Last Domino? tour, instead of leaving it to Steve Hackett and his band. With the emphasis more on instrumentals, 'Unquiet Slumbers' would have fitted in well while 'Blood on the Rooftops' would have been great as part of the acoustic set.

      They started planning this tour almost 2 years ago. I think Phil’s health was better then (or at least not this bad). Planning and preparing for a major tour like this, after a decade away, at their age, requires a huge investment of money and time. Money was likely the primary reason for them deciding to tour again in the first place (ie, they either need it or really want it), so as long as Phil is still drawing breath, they’re going to do the tour. Canceling it now would probably be financially catastrophic for them.

    • @zyxwut321
      @zyxwut321 2 года назад +1

      If Phil drops dead during the tour (a real possibility given his current state) at least he goes out doing what he loves and playing with his old mates and his son. Is it necessarily better for him to simply sit at home and wait for death? Johnny Cash went out recording, mentoring and giving what he had left and enjoying the warmth of the fans and music world for his contributions, now Phil is in that stage of his career and life. They may need the dough, too, especially to leave to their families after they're gone. If they can be up on stage and are willing, let them have at it.

      @@zyxwut321 I see what you're saying. But it just seems like Tony and Mike want this so much more then Phil (i might be wrong). Further more, wasn't the 2007 string of shows the perfect end to a long career? Vital, tight and fun shows. Granted, Tony and Mike are still playing really well. But Collins can't even play a tambourine in time and needs backup singers to mask his sub-par performance. And let's be honest: He requires truckloads of good-will from the fans who are defending him being a shadow of his good old self. This is my opinion, but i just can't seem to grasp why anyone thought this would be a good idea.

    • @humanbeing2420
      @humanbeing2420 2 года назад

      @@scumboi78 How accurate are those figures though? They can estimate how much an artist grosses in a tour year, but there are many other factors that determine a person’s net worth. What are their expenses? Did they lose money via risky investments or costly divorce settlements (Phil’s been through several marriages, hasn’t he)? Also, people with high net worth typically live a lifestyle that requires them to continue making the kind of money that allowed them to begin living that type of lifestyle in the first place. They often own homes, cars and planes that require maintenance and upkeep and are very expensive to insure. They likely employ help - cooks, assistants, drivers, maids. Thats expensive. So a high net worth doesn’t eliminate the need or the desire for more money - it tends to increase that need and desire.

Hearing negative people comment on how "they shouldn't have done it" like they are speaking for the fan base at large is just ridiculous. Of course they should have done it. Of course Phil isn't the phenomenon that he was in 1987 at Wembley, and yes they have had to detune the performance for that, but bottom line it is still Genesis performing a great show. Phil's drumming on the live version of The lamb from "Genesis Archives 67-75" is absolutely brilliant. That version probably has some studio overdubs on it, but I've heard a few bootleg tapes of The Lamb with just the raw mix, and they are equally great regarding the drumming part. I absolutely agree that it is very sad to see him in this state, as he's obviously struggling with some very serious health issues. As a side note, for me The Lamb took some years to fully "digest", but now I regard it as one of the best Genesis albums of all times. It really has some great songs on it, although I'm still not quite convinced about the concept bit ...

Choices have consequences sadly. I love Phil and hope he can find some peace now. He gave us so much of his life. He was always the energizer bunny and now seems distracted and uninvolved. So different from how he used to be. It’s like he’s just there in body only. Sad that his voice is shot also. Getting old is not for suckers that’s for sure.

    The best sounding (sonically, best recording) albums in my opinion are Lamb, Selling England, Trick of the Tail, And Then There Were 3, and Duke. Also, We Can't Dance had some nice sound with pop/prog hybrid songs by the Genesis Trio. And yes, I count Phil as an original member for bringing the drums, and the rhythm section, alive on their breakout 3rd LP, Foxtrot. By the way, the remastered CD of Duke sounds inferior compared to the original album recording in my opinion.
