      Questions. How long is one supposed to do these exercises for ? How do you know their working ? And should your throat hurt in the beginning ?

    • @drautin348
      @drautin348 2 дня назад

      @@kianstorr8878 1. The more you do it the better you will get, it’s good to continue practicing every now and then to ensure you don’t start getting worse.
      2. Record yourself and/or get an app for pitch and other voice stats.
      3. Nothing should hurt; try warming up and drinking water. Don’t strain or it will become a habit.

    finally a video where someone talks about what you ACTUALLY do while talking.
    there are lots of videos that do explain the science behind the voice, but when it comes to practice they just give you some mental model about what you should think of so your body does what you want them to do, well how am I going to troubleshoot with that?
    you on the other hand actually explained what muscles I use and how I should use them. I'm guessing after some practice controlling the vocal folds properly will feel as natural as controlling your hand movements
    Thank you, you helped me out alot!

    My voice tends to crack a lot on the voice wave, and occasionally on the decompression/compression power slides... Do you have any tips for avoiding this, or just keep practicing?

    • @gabe7622
      @gabe7622 4 года назад +6

      I think it might be because your running out of breath later in the exercise so try to take deeper breaths or maybe try raising or lowering the pitch of the hum slower
      These are just guesses, they may not work.

  • @SpringChickensOnlyMan

    If anyone remembers the voice where only a subtle amount of sound passes through causing the voice to sound strained and distressed. I always found doing that to be a heck of a challenge because it requires the right compression. Compress them too much it interrupts the vocal cord airflow by squeezing the gate way. Don’t compress them enough and it’ll just sound like an average compressed voice.
    Always hurt my throat trying to do that so I take a break and stop after a few attempts. Certain performances involved with character voices sure strain your throat a lot

    Hi Brendan!! Thanks a lot for doing these Component Focus series, you are giving us great value!! Thanks! I need them for my singing most of all! I have a question I just watch your new video about the larynx (Component Focus #2), in which you said that the larynx isn’t a pitch changer, which I totally agree with you, but in Exercise #3 at 7:30 when you show us how to do the exercises with decompressed, compressed and vocal fry sounds I saw you raised your larynx, of course this video was before your new one about the larynx, so I’m assuming that now we should do exercise #3 without raising the larynx, am I right??

    So I’ve been trying to learn how to manipulate my voice for a while now including vocal cry growls you know all that good stuff but I’ve only been able to inward growl, gutter roll and scream. The second you said I would be able to vocal fry and make that crackling noise I tried and was able to do it for the first time ever I was tripping out like wow dude I did not know the exercises i’m really could give you a wide range to work with like that I honestly thought it was like first simply not straining your voice or damaging it

    I got a question.
    how can I make sure that I am only using the corresponding muscles that are needed to control my vocal cords and not use any excess tension?
    are there muscles in the vocal cord area that beginners commonly tend to use, but don't serve any purpose?

      Great question! Voice Lessons To The World episode 82 on Strain might help you for now. We'll also put this on our list of topics for Brendan! In the meantime, he also has a Live Chat! You can check out our Community Tab for more info! -NYVC

    I was thinking about buying your vocal course and was wondering will it help with vocal impressions

    • @NewYorkVocalCoaching
      @NewYorkVocalCoaching  2 года назад

      Hi @--! The vocal course is actually from Justin Stoney, the owner of New York Vocal Coaching. He focuses more on singing so it would most likely not help with vocal impressions, though he does teach you how to sing different styles of music, which could be useful in learning how to control your voice better. Hope this helps! -NYSC

    I've been doing the VLTTW course for some time now. I'm on advanced 2, and have been struggling with the compression exercises, finding myself tensing unnecessarily during the 'over compressed' parts. Is a vocal fry technically speaking 'over-compression' then?
