I made this tonight for dinner. My mother was Japanese (Hiroshima survivor) and my grandmother on my fathers side was full blood Comanche. I still cook many of the meals she taught me. I start out with fry bread, add powdered and brown sugar with a dash of cinnamon for breakfast the next morning and a dash of honey for a mid morning snack. What a way to enjoy your food.
Bless you grandma and your granddaughter. Very special!

Happy Tears. I miss my Nana so much. She taught me how to make perogies and holupchi and borscht. I loved being in the kitchen with her and listening to her stories. She was orphaned in Ukraine at age 16, came to Canada to be with extended family and drove a horse-drawn taxi to make her living in the northern farming community. Nana was the queen of composting, up-cycling and recycling long before it became fashionable. She lived through two world wars, the great depression and losing her infant son due to lack of health care. Nana was an excellent seamstress and dressmaker. My favourite photo is of her and my daughter was taken from across the room while they sat on the couch. They are deep in discussion, Kidlet aged 4, Nana late 80s. They're both gone now.

My mom's dad was Italian his parents came to America from the old country he spoke fluent Italian but didn't teach my mom or siblings. I wish I could have gotten to learn it from him. That said, this video is beautiful because the younger generation is learning from the older generation language and food tradition. Good job Grandma.

Why is your hair tied back? That is so awful to watch that long hair being tossed around, gross!
The Fine language is wonderful to hear with translation. The traditional way for a Navajo woman is to have the hair pulled back, I was just told that the woman's thoughts are kept organized and clear. I've seen many cooking shows on where the hair is hanging down, it's so unappetizing. Gross I wouldn't eat any of that food, would the public want to eat food, with hair strands found in the food? Take notice. People never even mention good hand cleaning, before the presentation begins, wow.

This is absolutely wonderful. I learned to cook from my grandmothers, my mother and my father each great at their own dishes. I love the teaching of the language, the culture, the humor, and a proper measuring kit. Amazingly grandmother does a traditional recipe but teaches the right ingredients to make the dish healthier. So much love in the teaching and the learning. Thank you for this gift of multiple lessons. Outstanding!

Family time in the kitchen has always been taught in our family. We love food. We have also seen some of the traditional meals become slightly evolutionized in the process. The name navajo or Dine means the people. One of my favorite things my mother taught me while cooking was stories about her when she was younger. There was also so many stories about my ancestors that took place in the kitchen. We appreciate your comment and support.

I get nervous baking without measuring. I never measure when I cook, by baking is a different story. So easy to mess up. End up with a cake that falls in or a bread that doesn't rise. One day I'll get the hang of it. For now I follow recipes to the T... but I am getting the hang of what a teaspoon or a cup looks like without measuring, etc. I could never remember a whole recipe off the top of my head and also not measure anything lol.

Kristina Zissa I suspect that it's only relatively recently actual measurements are used in a family setting. My great grandma taught by eye and feel too. Sometimes certain recipies would require specific pots/spoons to get the correct amount. It's only because of my mother that we have some of the family recipies documented and written down. Wish I had more of them, but it makes me happy to be able to make something that so many have enjoyed.

In our native community we often joke about whose family makes the best fry bread. The ingredients are the same but the only real difference I have noticed is with the type of oil and how long they kneed the dough. Kneeding to much can make your bread chewier. Thanks for watching and commenting.

My grandma used to make these for us every time we would come to visit her and my grandpa. My grandpa used to call them survival bisquits. She made hers with lard though. My grandma Mary was Navajo and my papa Nick was Apache. I still remember the smell of survival bisquits and beans cooking any time we would visit. It is so important for the elders to teach their grand kids the traditional ways of native American living. I only wish I paid more attention when I was young and they were still around. Never take anything for granted.

What a wonderful video. Being a grandma is a very important job, and I always try to remember that I am making memories with my grandchildren. My memories of the time with my grandparents are the most precious ones from my childhood, especially time in the kitchen with my grandmas. Bless you!

This was a very good video. I like it when you said you were modern because of the hot water facet. I like cooking videos and I like videos with kids. You are a big kid to me because I am 7. I like it when your mom said do not flop it around and then said you were a good mixer. I will ask my mom or dad to watch this with me later so they can help me make this bread. I like making stuff. That is cool that you were teaching me new words. I already know spanish and english and I like to learn words in other languages. The fry bread looks cool and good. I like your channel. I subscribed and now we can be youtube friends because I make videos too. I make videos about kids stuff but I also make videos about skateboarding. I wish I could try that bread because you gave it 10 out of 10. Great video.

Thank you Toy Island TV. Our daughter in this video speaks fluent Chinese. Our grand mother in this video speaks fluent Navajo and didn't learn english until she turned 11. We will have to watch your skateboarding videos. Our dad who is in our videos skateboarded for years and was sponsored. Thanks again for watching.

Hi. That is cool. I will start learning Chinese in 3rd grade I think. That is cool that your grandma knows Navajo. My grandma was from Mexico and did not learn english until she was 18 I think. My grandma and Grandpa live in Arizona. That is cool. My Dad skateboards too. He has lots of skateboard trophies that are at my Grandma and grandpas house. He says he was a sponsored amateur. He said that is not as good as being sponsored. i will look for your dads skateboard videos.

A _seven year old_ wrote this? That's amazing! I have seen many writings from seven year olds, but I've never seen one who could write this well. Seven year olds can write simple sentences, commonly misspell words, and generally do not write long coherent passages. They are still sounding out words and it takes a lot of effort for them to write long paragraphs. This kid must be a child prodigy!

Aloha 🌈 Hawaiian salt would be healthy also. Ohana, (family) 👪 macadamia nut oil may also taste good as a healthy alternative to Crisco or lard.

Thanks for the comment. We love hawaiian salt. Our channel is named LIFE IS OHANA because my father is Hawaiian Japanese from Maui. Our parents have since divorced but both have taught us the importance of family. We have changed some of the original recipe because of all the diabetes that follows our people. We are hoping to make small changes that don't change the flavor of our awesome recipes.
